Polk PSW10

So I have an interesting question to ask to anyone that may have an answer.  I had purchased a pair of Polk Tsi100 speakers that I love.  The speakers are currently hooked up to a 2-Channel 100W JVC Receiver from 1988.  I am looking into adding a subwoofer if that is even possible.  I have done some research and learned a little about the Polk Subwoofers, specifically the PSW10, and that they have speaker line input.  Learning that I am posing the question, would I be able to use the speaker output on the receiver, pass the signal through the subwoofer and back to my pair of speakers?
Thanks in advance!
The Kearnel

That shouldn't be a problem at all. The only concern in that setup is the amount of extra speaker wire and running the wires cleanly depending on the room and setup. But, most subwoofers have those inputs SPECIFICALLY for that reason, so you're doing it correctly.
The JVC receiver might actually have a line-level subwoofer output on it, which would be much easier to implement if it existed. But if it doesn't, the way you've described is the way to go!

    Been using Arch for years but this is my first problem surprisingly so posting it in this Newbies section.
    I have MATE, KDE, and FLUXBOX working fine as desktop environments for years. Thought I would give GNOME a try and no matter what I've tried I cannot get it working. All I get is a sad face with an 'OOPS' message on screen. Although I am prompted to enter my WiFi password presumably from NetworkManager. None of the errors listed below turn up much on Google so I thought I'd turn to the community. Any help getting GNOME working correctly would be very much appreciated.

    it seems you're missing dependencies, or they're not started for some reason. Try running GNOME via GDM, installing latter should pull in the full kitchen sink. If you want more hints, google for "gjs polkit not found".

  • [Solved] Problem with upgrading polkit or filesystem

    Ok so first off they do "upgrade" but the problem has me worried that something is wrong.
    A week or so ago after converting to systemd I tried getting rid of ConsoleKit and installing polkit 0.107 from the [testing] repo but it caused pacman to get stuck at "(1/1) upgrading polkit"  So I tried that a couple of times but I could never get pacman to finish and get past that.  I had to control + c to get out of that then type exit in the console (no text was visible that I typed however but typing exit + enter worked for closing it).  So I then opened a new terminal and downgraded polkit back to 0.105 and waited for polkit to get pushed from testing to see if it would fix my issue.  Fast forward to today and I go to upgrade my system.  Among the 83 updates or so was polkit and filesystem.  What do you know it gets stuck at "(15/83) upgrading polkit".  Fuck so I control + c, open new terminal and then do the upgrade again and it continues to update but this time it gets stuck doing the same thing for filesystem.  I control + c, open new terminal and continue the upgrade until it finishes, which it does this time, and I reboot.
    I tried re-installing polkit again and filesystem again but they continue to get stuck.  I cannot "complete" the upgrade even though they show the appropriate version when I check.

  • Insufficient privileges with nm-applet but polkit policy set

    Hi folks, I'm not running gnome but do run gnome-settings-daemon along with the sawfish window manager. My problem is that nm-applet tells me "insufficient privileges" whenever I select a wireless network. So I've been reading up on it and found that the culprit is probably polkit-1. After setting
    <allow_any>yes</allow_any>
    <allow_active>yes</allow_active>
    <allow_inactive>yes</allow_inactive>
    for all entries in /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.policy I was hoping this would solve the problem but it hasn't. I still get the same error. So maybe it's not policykit related? How do I find out?

  • Thunar, xfce4 and polkit-gnome

    I've spent 3 hours this morning trying to understand mount permissions in Thunar and, thus, how polkit controls user access.  I'm pleased to say it hasn't been a total waste of time because I have a much better understanding of what polkit does and why.
    However, in my investigations I have seen countless forum threads by people trying to fix their Thunar mount problems.  The simple answer to almost all of these threads is "install polkit-gnome and restart".
    Arch uses auth_admin_keep for internal mounting permissions - for that to work you MUST have a PolicyKit Authentication Agent installed (right?) - polkit-gnome is exactly that.  Without polkit-gnome there is no application to pop-up and ask you for your password, which is exactly what the auth_admin option wants to do.
    So, how is it an optional depend for thunar?

    .:edit:.
    Whether automounting is or isn't an "optional" feature is largely irrelevant.
    My main point is that policykit requires a User Authenication Agent to function correctly - gnome-session and kdelibs pull in polkit-gnome and polkit-kde respectively by default.  Why is XFCE different just because they don't ship their own User Authentication Agent?
    anonymous_user wrote:It is optional because Thunar will still work without it. Mounting may not work, but file manager duties like moving and deleting files do work. At least that is my understanding of optional dependencies.
    Yes, that was my understanding too... 5 years ago.
    Udev and PolicyKit exist to make mounting disks, amongst other things, "as standard" across multiple environments, this functionality has been incorporated in Thunar.  Mounting in Thunar is as much a feature as moving and deleting files.
    It's also worth mentioning that I didn't set out to make automounting work in Thunar - I just had these Drives appearing in my sidebar but when I clicked on them I got an error.
    That's the definition of broken from a users perspective.

  • Polkit dead?

    Why?
    $ systemctl status polkit.service
    ● polkit.service - Authorization Manager
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/polkit.service; static; vendor preset: disabled)
    Active: inactive (dead)

    Failed to execute operation: Connection timed out

    What do you need it for?
    Even though I too got
    $ systemctl status polkit.service
    ● polkit.service - Authorization Manager
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/polkit.service; static; vendor preset: disabled)
    Active: inactive (dead)
    Docs: man:polkit(8)
    After running
    $ sudo systemctl enable polkit.service
    The unit files have no [Install] section. They are not meant to be enabled
    using systemctl.
    Possible reasons for having this kind of units are:
    1) A unit may be statically enabled by being symlinked from another unit's
    .wants/ or .requires/ directory.
    2) A unit's purpose may be to act as a helper for some other unit which has
    a requirement dependency on it.
    3) A unit may be started when needed via activation (socket, path, timer,
    D-Bus, udev, scripted systemctl call, ...).

  • [polkit-kde] strange 10 seconds of pause on boot

    since the 0.99.0-4 version of polkit-kde package I notice a strange pause of 10 seconds during the boot of KDE 4.14.1
    KDE displays the desktop ( icons, plasmoids ) but suddenly he stops his job for 10 seconds, I can't click on the "K" menu during these 10 seconds,
    then after 10 seconds KDE resumes his job, I can hear the sound of a new KDE session ( Kmix icon is displayed ),
    If I downgrade to 0.99.0-3 version of polkit-kde package then the bug is gone, no problems, there is no 10 seconds pause at the boot of KDE,
    so there is something wrong in 0.99.0-4 version of the polkit-kde package, why this strange pause of 10 seconds with this version of polkit-kde package ?
    Last edited by Potomac (2014-10-09 08:46:37)

    I solved the bug by rebuilding the polkit-kde package with makepkg and the same PKGBUILD,
    so the current package seems to have been built with maybe wrong version of dependencies or a bad source code ?
    I think that Andrea Scarpino should rebuild the polkit-kde package, something went wrong when he built his package ( bad version of some dependencies ? Bad source code, out of sync ? )
    a 0.99.0-5 version of this package is highly recommended for all users, in order to be sure that the most recent source code of polkit-kde is really used by the PKGBUILD

  • [SOLVED] Best Practice for systemd, udisks, udev, polkit,and openbox

    I have to admit I am stymied here.  I have been in the wiki and forums most of the day and am just not finding the solution here.
    I have both udisks and udisks2 installed
    I am running a pure systemd
    I do not use a login manager
    I use startx that has a switch clause based on an environmental variable to pick the environment I want.
    For now, let's limit this to xfce4 and openbox.
    I used to be able to log in and mount usb and SD volumes using Thunar, Dolphin, and palimpsest.  I can no longer do that; I receive an error indicating I've not the proper privileges.
    Even more fun, I log into a console and use udiskie, and can mount volumes without issue.
    I start X with startx, launch a terminal program, and udiskie will no longer allow me to mount.  I can read volumes mounted by udiskie before I started X.
    I have tried various combinations of ck-launch-session, dbus-launch in concert with openbox-session and startxfce4.  Nothing allows me to automount as a normal user.  This used to work, but something has gone south, but I am not clear when.
    Anyone have suggestions for a stable solution here?

    Are you starting X onto the same vt you logged into i.e. startx -- vt1 for tty1 or startx -- vt$(fgconsole) (or falconindy's xserverrc) for a more general case?   If you don't, systemd-logind cannot keep track of the session and the -kit permissions will thus break.
    You can see sessions using loginctl:
    └$ loginctl
    SESSION UID USER SEAT
    1 1000 zekesulastin seat0
    4 1000 zekesulastin seat0
    2 sessions listed.
    You can see information about your sessions using loginctl show-session $num - the session must be Active:
    └$ loginctl show-session 4
    Id=4
    Timestamp=Sun, 14 Oct 2012 23:18:56 -0400
    TimestampMonotonic=49646619798
    DefaultControlGroup=name=systemd:/user/zekesulastin/4
    VTNr=1
    TTY=tty1
    Remote=no
    Service=login
    Leader=12771
    Audit=4
    Type=tty
    Class=user
    Active=yes <-- This must be "yes"
    State=active

    IdleSinceHint=1350271136064237
    IdleSinceHintMonotonic=49646611251

    (I personally have a conditional in bash_profile to exec startx -- vt1 if I log in on tty1.)

  • [SOLVED]What is the meaning of any/active/inactive session in polkit?

    Wiki said  「inactive sessions are generally remote sessions (SSH, VNC, etc.) 」.
    So I changed the *.policy file like below to execute the action without password  only when I am logging in remotely.
    (Just for clarifying the difference between any/active/inactive session.)
    <allow_any>no</allow_any>
    <allow_inactive>yes</allow_inactive>
    <allow_active>no</allow_active>
    Contrary to expectations, I couldn't execute the action remotely without password.
    So I changed again like below.
    <allow_any>yes</allow_any>
    <allow_inactive>no</allow_inactive>
    <allow_active>no</allow_active>
    This time, I was able to execute the action remotely without password.
    From the above, I think the remote session is neither active nor inactive.
    Is it true? If so, what is the inactive session?
    What is the definition of active/inactive?
    Last edited by remingtontonpon (2014-08-04 06:16:52)

    'man polkit' explains that 'allow_inactive' and 'allow_active' are for sessions on local consoles.
    Only 'allow_any' applies to any client local or remote.
    This seems confirmed by what you observe on your machine.

  • How do I create these mesh/polka dot patterns in Illustrator? (pictures inside)

    I am creating templates and need to know how to do this mesh/polka dot type pattern.  It seems extremely simple, but I can't seem to figure out how to pull it off in Illustrator...
    Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!
    -Steffane Timm

    That looks like they simply used the halftone effect from the Effects menu. Effect>Sketch>Halftone Pattern
    it comes out black and white so they may have use it as an opacity mask/ You need a filled path to get it to work properly and it shoulshave some form of gradient as the fill to be percise.
    If you want dots to be completely round and vector which is a false halfone effect you make two blends large dots and small dots
    You expand the blends
    Then make a blend of the expanded art Read about making blends and blend options
    Here I left it filled with blue and made an opacity mask read about opacity masks
    Here i filled the blends with black and made an opacity mask

  • [Solved] consolekit and polkit under systemd

    I was wondering if I still had vestiges of the sysv init left on my system since I have supposedly gone completely over to systemd.
    The consolekit wiki page strongly suggests that systemd is incompatible with it. If I do "systemctl list-unit-files --no-pager|grep -i console" I see
    console-kit-daemon.service disabled
    console-kit-log-system-restart.service static
    console-kit-log-system-start.service static
    console-kit-log-system-stop.service static
    console-shell.service disabled
    Yet when I do "systemctl --all --no-pager|grep -i console" for some reason I see
    console-kit-daemon.service loaded active running Console Manager
    console-...m-start.service loaded active exited Console System Startup Logg
    It strikes me as strange for a loaded, active, running service to be disabled. Anyway should consolekit be "uninstalled" and completely eliminated?
    Polkit causes somewhat similar questions although it is less obvious from the wiki that it is incompatible with systemd.
    Journalctl does show systemd starting up polkit and consolekit, but it also shows several messages, "console-kit-daemon[553]: missing action", and for polkitd it shows both a "Registered Authentication Agent" and later a "Unregistered Authentication Agent" - for several different buses, apparently. Not sure if that is normal.
    Just wondering how all this fits together, and if some of it should be gone now that systemd is here.

    I wonder if there are any more things like that? I was a little surprised there were no warnings on the systemd conversion to get rid of consolekit, or that the compatibility package didn't take care of it. Maybe there were warnings and I just missed them.
    I also wonder about the "ck-launch-session" at the end of my .xinitrc file. The consolekit wiki article says,
    An easy method to be able to remove ConsoleKit is to automatically log in to a virtual console and start X from there. It is important that, as mentioned in the latter article, the X server is started on the same virtual console that you log in to, otherwise logind can not keep track of the user session. You can then simply remove ck-launch-session from your ~/.xinitrc.
    I don't quite understand that. Just delete the line? Or does something else (having to do with systemd) go in there? And why the virtual console bit? Why not just go to single user and handle it there?
    Here is my .xinitrc:
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    # exec gnome-session
    # exec startkde
    # exec startxfce4
    # ...or the Window Manager of your choice
    exec ck-launch-session startlxde

  • Polkit permissions not allowing logout or shutdown

    I'm new to Arch Linux from Gentoo.  Since the switch I haven't been able to log out or shutdown.  My groups are:
    [z@arch ~]$ groups
    lp wheel video audio optical floppy storage power users zachary
    My .xinitrc runs
    LANG="ja_JP.UTF-8" LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8" exec ck-launch-session startxfce4
    In Gentoo I used some program called polkit-gnome or something to edit permissions.  Is there another way to do this?  I can't find it in Arch.  Would appreciate any help I can get :3  Otherwise the transition has gone extremely well.

    Meeeeh.  I checked my error output when running startx and it was this ->

  • [solved]policykit vss polkit

    Hi.
    I have recently noticed that 'policykit' package has disapeared from repos,  propably in favor of 'polkit'.
    'polkit' package does not conflict with 'policykit'.
    Is this a bug or what ?

    Awe...., maybe that is what the problem is i.e. systemd doing stuff that ConsoleKit use to do.
    Like when I upgrade to polkit-0.107-4 then set paxctl -cPEmRXS /usr/lib/polkit-1/polkitd
    I don't have any more problems with polkit I guess. It seems that the problem is systemd not being able to connect to dbus. However, there are no errors that help me find what bin's need security holes poked into them.
    D-Bus seems to start...
    Oct 31 18:49:44 walnut systemd[1]: Starting D-Bus System Message Bus Socket.
    Oct 31 18:49:44 walnut systemd[1]: Listening on D-Bus System Message Bus Socket.
    Oct 31 18:49:44 walnut systemd[1]: Starting D-Bus System Message Bus...
    Oct 31 18:49:44 walnut systemd[1]: Started D-Bus System Message Bus.
    But then I get errors like this....
    Oct 31 18:50:24 walnut dbus-daemon[399]: dbus[399]: [system] Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit': timed out
    Oct 31 18:50:24 walnut dbus[399]: [system] Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit': timed out

  • Transition to systemd: polkit doesn't start

    Since it's more and more obvious, that systemd is the way to go, I tried to do the transition. I've read the wiki page, prepared my system, added the init parameter to my kernel boot line. First try was surprisingly smooth, my XFCE desktop appears, nearly everything was fine.
    Nearly. What wasn't fine was polkit. It didn't start, and because of this, some other things like  udisks and upower doesn't start either. I tried to debug the problem:
    # systemctl start polkit
    Job for polkit.service failed. See 'systemctl status polkit.service' and 'journalctl -n' for details.
    systemctl status polkit.service
    polkit.service - Authorization Manager
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/polkit.service; static)
    Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Thu, 2012-11-01 10:25:55 CET; 35s ago
    Docs: man:polkit(8)
    Process: 10963 ExecStart=/usr/lib/polkit-1/polkitd --no-debug (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
    CGroup: name=systemd:/system/polkit.service
    Nov 01 10:25:55 itchy systemd[1]: Starting Authorization Manager...
    Nov 01 10:25:55 itchy systemd[1]: polkit.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
    Nov 01 10:25:55 itchy systemd[1]: Failed to start Authorization Manager.
    Nov 01 10:25:55 itchy systemd[1]: Unit polkit.service entered failed state
    journalctl -n
    Nov 01 10:25:55 itchy systemd[1]: Starting Authorization Manager...
    Nov 01 10:25:55 itchy systemd[1]: polkit.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
    Nov 01 10:25:55 itchy systemd[1]: Failed to start Authorization Manager.
    Nov 01 10:25:55 itchy systemd[1]: Unit polkit.service entered failed state
    That's all. I don't know where to get more information about the failure, and with this level of detailed information, I can't do anything. I tried to find solutions in the wiki and here in the forum, but I didn't find any similar problem description.
    Since I'm not familiar with systemd, can someone give me some hints to track down the problem? I'm a little bit lost here … Nice first impression from systemd, I have to say …

    Hi, it looks like I'm having the same problem. Polkit fails to start, and attempting to reinstall polkit gives:
    groupadd: GID '102' already exists
    useradd: group 'polkitd' does not exist
    error: command failed to execute correctly
    I had a look in /etc/group and this includes the line:
    tex:x:102:
    May I ask how exactly you solved the conflict? Is it safe to just remove this group? I didn't create this group, it must have been created by some package at some point in the past, I guess. I have 3 other computers which I just updated as well, and the problem did not occur there (because no such group exists on those computers).
    Thanks for the information at any rate. There seem to be a lot of different symptoms that can also be caused by other problems, so I had a hard time identifying the issue. They include XFce taking a very long time to start, removable drives not showing up on the desktop / in Thunar until I log out and back in again, and then still failing to mount the drives with the error message "Not authorized to perform operation (polkit authority not available and caller is not uid 0)". That last one was the clue that lead me here
    EDIT: I just found this and tried it: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=121824
    Looks like the tex group owns a couple of files on my system though (unsurprisingly they are all TeX-related): everything in /usr/local/share/texmf. They were all last modified on october 3rd, 2008 and november 2nd 2008. So I guess a package installation back then created the group or something.
    I don't think these files are still in use (there is also a /usr/share/texmf with more recent files), and pacman -Qo says they aren't owned by any package. So I guess I'll just remove them and get rid of the group as well. Interestingly, the wiki does make mention of the files and the 'tex' group: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/TeX_Live
    A skeleton of a local texmf tree is at /usr/local/share/texmf: this directory is writable for members of the group tex.
    Perhaps this information is very dated?
