Poll: Development in ABAP Objects / Webdynpro vs. classical Dynpro

Hey there ABAP developers,
I just want to ask if you can give me one or two minutes of your attention for two poll questions.
At the moment I´m writing my master thesis about the development of a monitoring tool in ABAP. One of my bigger chapters is about the decision, which programming paradigm should be used for new development projects in SAP. And another important one is about WebDynpro vs. classical Dynpros.
Because of the fact, that I can´t create any polls in here, I just started this discussion and hope for many replies .
It would be very nice if some of you could give me an answer to the following questions (only 2 ), so that I can maybe use the result of this poll in my master thesis, if there are enough responses.
1. What percentage of new development projects are you developing in ABAP Objects? (Not to be considered small reports that just runs for only one time)
     A. 0 %
     B. less than 25%
     C. 25% - 49%
     D. 50% - 75%
     E. more than 75%
2. Which GUI technology do you prefer?
     A. Classical Dynpro
     B. WebDynpro
     C. Business Server Pages (BSP)
     D. others (please mention)
I want to thank you in advance for answering the questions,
Best regards,
Christoph

Hi,
Present SAP Implementation projects are very rare, maximum projects are support and up gradations only .
If they want Implement the  SAP  newly  , defiantly they should creating ABAP Objects.
Why Because  ABAP Objects are Object Oriented Concepts,  so,  for  future reference and re usability..etc .
Now Come to the First Quetion.
if it is implementation project   ABAP Objects are   25% - 49%.
if it is Support project ABAP Objects are   25%
Now Come to the Second Quetion.
Depend upon Reqmnt, but Most of the Applications are Webdynpro .  i.e 70%.
Remaining 30% All ( BSP and GUI ....Etc..)
This is my opinion.

  • Webdynpro Development Component Callable Object Escalation

    Hi,
In gp sequential block workflow  using webdynpro development component callable objects  When the initiator intiates a workflow ,it is assigned to the first approver. Now if the approver does not take any action within 2 days i want to escalate the task to the second approver. How can i do this escalation?
There is a standard parameter call <b>due date</b>...in action. How can I set this value dynamically from my application..
During escalation , the next approver has to be taken by executing an rfc in the background
    Please help....
    Thanks,
    Shamila

    Hi,
You can define a CAF Core application service (implemented in the CAF Core layer) or a background CO (implemented by a J2EE class interface) which can call a RFC to get the next approver and return the next approver's user id as an output parameter. You can use dynamic user assignment in the next action (approval), by selecting the processor as "Filled From Context Parameter" (at the Roles tab in block level) and select the user id output parameter of the background CO/CAF app service CO.
You can get more details on different types of CO at the CAF Tutorial Center @SDN

  • Webdynpro ABAP or Webdynpro Java?

    Hello experts.
I want to learn to develop WebDynpro's
Do you which of the two tools do you recommend? webdynpro java or webdynpro abap.
    Greetings

    Hi Lupe ,
Although both technologies have same functionalities but even then they are not identical.
Following are some of the differences:
Language :-  First difference is the programming language used as the names Webdynpro ABAP and Webdynpro JAVA reflect. In ABAP Webdynpro, along with ABAP coding, RFCu2019s are also supported via Service call. Unlike Webdynpro ABAP, we cannot do ABAP coding in Webdynpro JAVA. Instead RFCu2019s and Web services are created and used in it to serve this purpose. In addition to Web services and adaptive RFC, Java Beans is another model supported by Webdynpro JAVA.
Design Time Environment :-  Webdynpro ABAP requires ABAP Workbench (SE80) while SAP Netweaver Developer Studio is necessary for designing Webdynpro JAVA applications. So, additional installation is required. This studio reduces the development effort and utilizes some visual tools for creating components which can be reused.
Storage :-  Applications developed using Webdynpro ABAP are stored centrally in ABAP server whereas in case of Webdynpro JAVA, the code remains on the client machine that is developed using a tool called Netweaver Developer studio. So, due to the powerful version control system of Webdynpro ABAP, the load removes from the development machine which is not possible in case of Webdynpro JAVA.
Skills Required :- For Webdynpro ABAP, a developer should have knowledge of ABAP programming, Development tools, Database concepts, ABAP Objects. However, Webdynpro JAVA requires skill set comprising java programming, java development tools and object-oriented concept.
Performance:-  Large scale applications that involve large number of web users canu2019t work well on ABAP server. So, for robust and scalable applications, Webdynpro JAVA is preferred because of powerful J2EE server as proved by Sun Microsystems. However, small-scale or applications involving small or medium users can go well with Webdynpro ABAP. Thus, performance varies depending on the number of web users and one can choose ABAP or JAVA accordingly.
So the decession is that its totaly based on your available skillsets and your scenario to be implemented.
    Thanks & Regards,

  • Translation of non-ABAP objects

    Hello colleagues,
I know that SAP provides special Translation Environment for translation of ABAP-objects (TX SE63 etc.). But what about translation of non-ABAP objects? Could be SE63 suitable for this task or it can be performed only via translation xlf files (SAP NW Developer Studion and so on)?
    Regards,
    Arkadiy

    Hi Prakash,
firstly thank you for you reply.
Secondly I know about three main categories of non-ABAP objects but I haven't an information about what is it certainly? So there are at least two questions in my opinion:
    1) Could it be suitable to translate Java objects or WebDyn Pro Java objects?
    2) If yes, how it can be suitable for it? Because I know how I can translate Java or WebDynpro via NW Developer Studio, but I don't know how it can be possible via SE63.
Really I can't find any helpful information about translation non-ABAP objects via SE63.
Could anyone help me in my questions?

  • How to Implement Abap Object and Access Key for se24 developers.

    Hi every One,
This is Abdul Rahman, Started Learning Abap Objects i want a simple program to be executed i.e. in Local class (Abap program)and as well in global class(class builder).
Also i would like to know  When ,Were and Why Abap Object should be used.
prob to Me :- When i wanted execute F8 a Class in se24 Class Builder it is asking me AcessKey , plz if this is required plz any one send Me.
I have this key 36687663221261278694 it is already used in Abap editor , it is not accepting in se24 .
plz help Me , waiting for response ..
    thankyou so much
    Abdul Rahman.

    Hello Abdul
Here are my answers to your questions:
    (1) <b>Local classes</b>: <i>Do not use them.</i>
    - As long as your class is rather small (few attributes and methods), local classes  are ok yet as soon as they become larger you will loose the overview
    (2) <b>Global classes</b>: <i>Do use them.</i>
    - Make use of global classes even if they are only used for your training. The big advantage over local classes is that you will get used to the classe builder (SE24) which has a plethora of functions.
    (3) <b>Executing global classes</b>: <i>Can be done if you have defined an OO-transaction.</i>
    - An OO-transaction has a class and one of its public methods as parameters (similar like report transactions). When you all the OO-transaction an instance of you class is created and the public method is called.
    (4) <b>Where and Why use ABAP Objects?</b> <i>Everywhere. Anytime.</i>
    - ABAP objects is about stability, maintainability and re-usability of coding. These developer aims can be much more fulfilled using ABAP OO means than in classical programming.
    Regards
       Uwe
PS: There are situations where local classes are quite appropriate and, using ABAP Unit testing, are obligatory.

  • Advanced ALV using ABAP objects

    Hi All ABAPers,
I have a question in Advanced ALV using ABAP objects. Can we display the output ie., ALV Grid without defining the custom cointainer?ie., just as we do in the classical ALV without defining any screens. Can we do that as a normal executable program ie., without using module pool programming. Please give me a solution.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Chaitanya.

If you want editable grids then the cl_salv_table method won't unfortunately be of use since (currently) there's no editable facility / method.
So if you are using cl_gui_alv_grid here's how to "get round" the problem.
I'm essentially using my own alv class which is a reference to cl_gui_alv_grid  but the methodology shown here is quite simple.
What you can do is to create a method which calls a function module for example ZZ_CALL_SCREEN so you only have to code a Screen and a GUI in ONE function module and not in every  ALV report.
for example you could create something like this
My version has the option of 2 screens - so when I double click on a cell in one grid I can  perform some actions and then display a 2nd grid before returning back to the ist grid. You can easily modify this to suit your applications.
The parameters are fairly self evident from the code. You can just use this as a model for your own applications.
I agree that having to code a separate screen and GUI for OO ALV GRID reports was for some people a "show stopper" in switching  from the old SLIS  to OO ALV reports.
I Hope if any SAP development guys are reading this PLEASE PROVIDE EDITABLE FUNCTIONALITY IN THE NEW CL_SALV_TABLE class.  Thanks in advance.

  • ABAP Object X Design Patterns X Extreme Program

    Hi Evebody,
I’m postgraduate in Object Oriented Analysis and Programming.
I’ve been working with ABAP procedural development for two years and I’ve started to work with ABAP Objects has few months.
I’d like to get deeply knowledge in my development’s skills, could someone tell me if <b>ABAP Object X Designer Patterns X Extreme Program</b> is a good path to follow?
I’d like to share material and guides about this topic.
I’ve already bought these books to help me.
    <b>ABAP Objects</b> - H. Keller; Hardcover <i>(Pre-Order)</i>
    <b>Design Patterns Explained</b> - Alan Shalloway
I’ll be very grateful with any help.

    > And do you think these themes are a great combination
    > for ABAP development?
Design pattern are very abstract and can be used with any OO programming language. The implementations will differ but the core concepts are always the same.
XP is an agile development process and can also be used with any programming language.
Learning what design pattern are and how to use them is very important in my opinion. Most companies expect that you are familiar and have experience with them.
Extreme Programming (XP) on the other side is different. When I began to explore XP it got me started on how software should be developed in general. Since the concepts behind XP are quite different, it should at least stimulate you to start thinking about how you develop software at the moment and if there might be better ways of doing it.
If you have only time to study one subject go for the design pattern. You might also consider reading the following books if you want to improve your OO coding skills:
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Refactoring-Improving-Design-Existing-Code/dp/0201485672/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-4989641-7820932?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1173448197&sr=8-1">Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code (a true classic)</a>

  • Exception 'error_message' in ABAP Objects

I've got a heterogeneous scenario with new program parts in ABAP objects and older parts in classical ABAP.
In the older parts some R/3 standard functions are called which dump dialog messages which are not allowed at that state of the program flow ('on commit').
The simple solution in classical ABAP was to use standard exception 'error_message' in the top level 'call function' statement thus catch all dialog messages in lower levels.
I am looking for an analog solution in object oriented ABAP. But exception 'error_message' is not allowed with 'call method'. It cannot be defined statically in the methods declaration. And the system exception caused by the dialog error message is not included in the set of catchable system errors.
I would be grateful for any hints concerning this problem.

    Hi
Excuse me! But I didn't want to sent you my answer.
    Anyway:
    CLASS lcl_my_class DEFINITION.
      PUBLIC SECTION.
        METHODS my_method
                  EXPORTING
                    EXCEPTION TYPE CHAR1
                  EXCEPTIONS error_messages.
    ENDCLASS.                    "LCL_MY_CLASS DEFINITION
    CLASS lcl_my_class IMPLEMENTATION.
      METHOD my_method.
        IF EXCEPTION = 'X'.
          MESSAGE e208(00) WITH 'Message error'
                      RAISING error_messages.
        ELSE.
          MESSAGE I208(00) WITH 'OK!'.
        ENDIF.
      ENDMETHOD.                    "MY_METHOD
    ENDCLASS.                    "LCL_MY_CLASS IMPLEMENTATION
So you did want to do a call like this:
    CALL METHOD lcl_my_class=>my_method
       EXCEPTIONS
         error_messages = 1
         error_message  = 2
         OTHERS         = 3.
No! you can't do it, but you try to insert your call in fm where you use ERROR_MESSAGE addition. I think you can do it if your methods are std.

  • Java package concept in ABAP Objects

Hi, just a question on grouping of classes in ABAP Objects.
In Java, you can group classes by "package" to avoid
namespace collision, my question, in ABAP Objects, how
do you group classes to avoid namespace collision?
I know that there is package concept in SAP/ABAP but it
    is different concept in Java.
Thanks in advanced for your reply.

    Hello One and Lonley,
the package concept in ABAP and Java is quite different. In java the package name is part of the development object in ABAP not. So any class pool name is global unique. In combination with the restriction on 30 chars this leads often to somehow cryptic names.
The only way to escape this somehow is the excessive use of local classes. That mean classes defined within main programs. If you are on 7.00 you may check FuGr SAPLSAUNIT_TREE_CTRL_LISTENER for this technique.

        CALL METHOD OV->SHOW_SPEED.
      ENDLOOP.
      SKIP.
WRITE: / 'Higher speed', VEHICLE=>MAX_SPEED, 'for vehicle nr.',
                VEHICLE=>MAX_VEHICLE.
      SKIP.
READ TABLE OV_TAB INTO OV INDEX P_READ.
      IF SY-SUBRC <> 0.
        WRITE: 'No vehicle', P_READ.
      ELSE.
        CALL METHOD OV->GET_SPEED IMPORTING E_SPEED = V_SPEED.
WRITE: 'Speed of vehicle', P_READ, V_SPEED.
      ENDIF.
Try to repeat this using a function group and I think you'll undestand because it'll be very hard to do it.
By only one function group how can u read the data of a certain vehicle?
Yes you can create in the function group an internal table where u store the data of every car: in this way u use the internal table like it was an instance, but you should consider here the example is very simple. Here we have only the speed as characteristic, but really we can have many complex characteristics.

How to use ABAP objects. I have created a program in se38 and how to call this function. ehat is the function call name. What are the uses.

    Hi
Please check the standard SAP Programs
Goto SE38 and give BCALV and press F4 you will get standard SAP programs for most requirements.
They use ABAP OO to develop the ALV.

  • Meaning of factory method in abap objects

    Hi,
Can anybody help me in understanding the meaning of factory method in abap object? what is the importance of this?
    Regards
    Sudhansu

    Hi Krish and Sudhansu,
Design patterns are solutions which are already verified and known by many developers. That is why it is worth to use them. There is no need to reinvent the wheel in many cases.
I would recommend book which is placed in the ABAP world:
    http://www.sap-press.com/products/Design-Patterns-in-Object%252dOriented-ABAP-(2nd-Edition).html
Although Java language has intuitive syntax, there are some special things in ABAP development so it is better to check solutions adjusted for ABAP editor.
The most common usage of factory pattern is to simplify object creation.
    - By one method call you provide required parameters and do all initializations, including dependent objects.
    - Class can have many factory methods, if you want to provide more ways of initialization.
    - Factory method is usually static in the class and they return initialized instance of object for this class.
    - There is naming convention to start factory method name with "create" - easy to recognize pattern.
    - If you set property of class to "private instantiation" then you force to use factory method for object creation. In this way it is really simple to find all places where object are created with given set of input parameters - find references of factory method.
Factory pattern becomes even more powerful if we add inheritance. Factory method returns basic object (like ZCL_VEHICLE) but its implementation can return different subclass instance, depending on input parameter (ZCL_CAR, ZCL_TRAIN etc). Each instance can implement differently behavior (methods implementation), but these are object oriented techniques.

  • Major global classes used in abap objects

    Hi,
I am new to the abap objects and till now i am to understand that the role of the global classes are important in the abap object program. I had tried to search on the net but i was not able to get the desired result.
I want to know which are the major global classes which are used in the ABAP objects.
Plzz provide me guidelines for it.

    Ricx,
       It depends on your requirement.
For alv's we use these global classes. For Webdynpro related alv we use different global classes.
    CL_GUI_ALV_GRID (List Viewer)
CL_GUI_ALV_GRID_BASE (Basis Class for ALV grid)
    CL_GUI_ALV_TREE (ALV Tree Control)
    CL_GUI_ALV_TREE_SIMPLE (Simple ALV Tree)
CL_ALV_TABLE_CREATE (Dynamic Creation of ALV Data Table)
CL_ALV_TREE_BASE (Basis Class ALV Tree Control)
    CL_CK_ALVTREE_NKEY_2_OBJECT (Converter Node Key Object)
CL_ALV_EVENT_DATA (Changing Data Container for Events)
    CL_ALV_EVENT_TOOLBAR_SET (ALV Context menu)
