POLL: Your background and your interest in Oracle XE

Hi,
I am really curious about the "audience" or potential "customers" of Oracle XE.
Please help me to understand the requirements for an entry-level book about XE I am going to write :-).
What is :
- your programming background
- the databases used previously
- the platform(s) you want to use XE and
- the projects you want to use XE for.
Basically I want to understand,
where you come from (technically)
and
how you want to use XE (platform and programming languages)
in order to write a book people like you can really get started.
What would you like to see in this book?
Thanks a lot for your feedback, I really appreciate it,
~Dietmar.

Dietmar, Where to start ...
A) One of my interests in XE is to implement any number of applications that would have traditionally been written in MS Access. As an independant Oracle consultant, the two questions that come at me most often are:
1) What is the least expensive and fastest way of providing a database application to do ... (which I usually turn down, because they have Access 'expertise' who can 'do the job for less' - why compete, as)
followed, four months later, by
2) Something went wrong with the Access database when we put it on a 'share' and had 15 people use it at the same time. How can we fix this, now that we've become dependent on the application ...
Oracle Database 10g Express Edition will eliminate question 2) entirely by allowing me to implement the application using ApEx when they ask question 1)
B) In addition, as a trainer/instructor, (registered with Oracle University to teach all Oracle9i and 10g DB, AS and language technical courses), one thing that has bothered me tremendously is that secondary schools, colleges, and universities have been teaching programming, yet very few have taught Oracle, or even plain SQL - never mind taught it 'properly'. (In part, this has been due to perceived high license costs for Oracle - I even know of one that still teaches using old Oracle7 licenses.)
I now see the possibility of creating XE-based Oracle courses. It may even be possible to include the XE environment on CD in the book cover, together with all the labs and perhaps solutions.
(In fact, I'm kinda working on one right now ... hopfully to be timed with release of SQL Developer and possibly using JDeveloper as well. Just need to focu .... er, focus - as I have a few diversions in my life. When it kicks in, my hobby takes a lot of time.)
I also see books like Tom Kyte's and Jonathan Lewis' coming with XE and the samples and tests so that people can verify the examples in a controlled environment.
As for my background - started programming in 1969; became an Electrical Engineer in 1979; joined Nortel in 1979 and worked on telephone exchanges - designing, programming, troubleshooting; got involved with Oracle v4 when asked to lead a team to implement a trouble ticketing database in 'some SQL system'; lead technologist for an Oracle-based apps company (competitor to PeopleSoft) from 91-96; Oracle Principal [pre-sales] Consultant for the North American communications vertical 96-03; independent Java, Linux & Oracle pusher since then.
What I'd like to see in the book? Well .... Oracle By Example comes to mind ... let's talk!
/Hans

If you lost your ipad and your years worth of insurance is not over yet can they send you a new ipad for free?

No. Sorry. That year's worth of 'insurance' (which I'm presuming you mean the warranty) only covers manufacturer's defects. Theft is not an manufacturer's defect.

  • How you can sync your contact and your mail with iTunes 11 as it's not there anymore ?

How you can sync your contact and your mail with iTunes 11 as it's not there anymore ?

~ means your Home directory. Using the command above takes you to the Home directory on the boot drive.  Your backup files are now on another drive in a directory that used to be your Home but is now a subfolder of Users so you have to specify that drive after the /Volumes, then the user name, then the rest to go there
I use OSX 10.4.11 and on it the libraries are still visible.  There's two at least.  One general one at the top level of the boot drive and another for each user (the one with the ~).  I think they made at least one of them invisible with newer OS versions.

  • TS3510 how do you use your apple ID email with facetime on your laptop and your iphone?

I am trying to set up my Facetime on my laptop and it's telling me that my email is already being used (from my iphone facetime). Can you use your Apple ID email AND iphone accounts in for both FaceTimes?

That's normal. Just enter your password. You won't be able to change the Apple ID that appears there. After you sign out, and sign in with the new Apple ID, it will take the place of the old one.
If you changed your Apple ID password, enter the new password.
There are many iCloud services, and you might be confronted with the old Apple ID as you use them. You might have to sign out of each one individually, and sign in under your revised Apple ID.
I agree it's confusing. It's even more confusing if you created more than one Apple ID. That's a different circumstance from changing an Apple ID. I hope you didn't do that.

  • Lightroom Mobile allows you to share collections between your computer and your iOS devices. How about computer to computer?

If I edit on my computer, the edit shows up on my iPad and edits I make on my iPad show up on my computer. Do they allow you to share the same between two computers? I have used the work around of exporting as a catalog, but that is a pain and must be done each time I move from one computer to the other. I usually don't know when I am going to be using one or the other. My collections are rather large and it takes a long time to export them as a catalog and more time to transfer them and more time still to import them. I wish they would allow a shared catalog or collection, so multiple computers, such as a desktop and notebook could work seamlessly together on the same images. I would like to be able to edit on one and have the changes reflected on the other. My desktop is far more powerful than my notebook and has 4 times the screen to work on. I prefer to use it for editing, but as a landscape photographer, I travel all over for weeks at a time and so I have plenty of time to work on the road. If they have a way for me to do it back and forth with a computer and an iOS device, I don't see why they can't make it happen for computer to computer. The export collection as a catalog really is not a solution. If they don't allow computer to computer, has anyone tried going from one computer to an iOS device and then to a different computer? In other words, using the iPad as a middle man between desktop and notebook?

This would be great but it isn't possible at the moment. You can't use the iOS device as the middle man as you propose. As soon as you uncouple one desktop you lose the cloud images and it will only sync with one Mac or Windows machine at a time. Undoubtedly this has to do with the use of the lossy dng for the files. On the desktop machine you are going to expect full resolution images which would take exponentially more storage on the cloud servers than the heavily downsized lossy compression dng files that are used now. 30MB raw originals are scaled down to a 1MB smart preview dng which is what is uploaded to the "cloud." On the iPad it doesn't matter much that you get very low resolution and lossy compression as you can still do some minor editing, but on your desktop you don't want to only have files like that. Syncing full res files over the cloud is going to be quite slow and is going to be quite expensive for Adobe, which is likely why we don't have it yet.

  • What can you do if you forgot your password and your locked out of your iPhone 4?

Hi, I recently put a password on my iPhone 4 and I must have hit the wrong button when making the password twice, so it's not the password I meant to set it too, and I want to be able to unlock it with out restoring it, does anyone know of a different way?

The screen lock code would be pretty worthless if it were easily worked around. Performing a restore is trivial enough.
You won't lose anything if you synced and backed up your iPhone recently. Just do a normal sync with your computer after the restore operation is complete.

  • TS2446 if you forget your passcode and your phone is disable how do you unlock it?

I gave my old phone to my granddaughter and she lock her self because she forgot the pahsscode, how do I unlock the phone?

If she's forgotten the passcode then you will need to connect the phone to the computer that it's normally synced to and you should then be able to reset the phone and restore/re-sync the content to it (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212) - you may need to put the phone into recovery mode in order to be able to reset it : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
If you do it via a different computer then :
If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present.

  • HT5527 So do you need separate iCloud accounts for your iphone AND your laptop?

iCloud complimentary storage plans expire tomorrow.  Do we need separate iCloud accounts for iphone and laptop?

I'm thinking you had a Mac/Me.com account like I did that got transferred to iCloud. We were kinda grandfathered in to 25gig storage while the basic iCloud account storage is 5. As far as I know that storage plan is the only thing that expires tomorrow. You'll just be reverted back to the basic 5gig storage.
As far as anything else you don't need to have a different iCloud account, remember only one iCloud account can be used for the full suite of services on your phone but you could use a different one for iTunes and App store purchases if you wanted to. My wife and I share one account for those purchses on all our devices and computers but I do also use a separate iCloud account as my main one on my phone to keep our emails, messages, etc. separate.

  • Has anyone had issues with texting between your iPhone and your iPad 2?

If I send a text message from my iPad 2 and my iPhone 4 to someone it sometimes creates two different text feeds in my friend's phone.  So it shows two different text "groups" in their iPhone.  If they reply on one of them I don't get the messages.  Any ideas?

Check to make sure you have the Recieve At going to the same email address on both devices.  Settings > Messages > Receive At

  • Can you dual sync your bluetooth apple keyboard to both your ipad2 and your mac?

I want to link a keyboard to my ipad2...can i sync my bletooth apple keyboard and bluetooth mouse to my ipad2 and keep it synced with my mac mini?

I haven't done it intentionally, but while it seems to be technically possible to have the bluetooth keyboard "connect" to one and then the other, it gets messy if both devices are on at the same time and near each other. I don't recommend it.
A mouse doesn't have any utility with a finger and gesture based iOS device so that will be Mac Mini only.

  • Accessing email from BOTH your iPhone and your MacBook

So, two devices accessing the same POP email. I have all machines set to NOT delete messages on the server - but it seems as though some mail comes to my MacBOOk and some to my iPhone. At least it seems that the ones that do not come fully to my iPhone say that "this messages was not downloaded from the server."
I'm certain that I haven't set something up right.
Do I have to switch to IMAP???
I'm using a Pro Gmail account
    Thanks for any suggestions.

iCloud calendar are all connected.  If you deleted a calendar from one device, it would erase it across all devices. Do you use time machine??

  • Steal your money and your money even if you dont download it

i got charged over $20 from a app that i never even see before and i looked them up and things like this is happening to other people too.
im wondering how could a app that i never downloaded charge me money?

Why is this app still in the App Store?  Come on, Apple--clearly something is seriously wrong here.  There are thousands of reports of problems all over the Internet.  Kick Sega out of the App Store!

  • It's official: 9/24 MacL webcast, iTU/Woolamaloo (and YOUR tool too!)

    Hi guys,
It's official ... the next MacLearning.org webcast (September 24th at 10:00 AM PDT) is going to be all about iTunes U and Woolamaloo. I'll be presenting, along with Apple's own Miguel Young. I'll send more detail later ... but the date, time, and theme are set. I mean, I've already got, oh, like 25 slides made ... so this is serious.
And while I'll be spending some time talking about Woolamaloo, I also want to highlight some of the awesome things you guys are doing (and there are some really cool things out there). I think I know where most of the stuff is, but I hate to miss anyone/anything. If you could pop me off an e-mail ([email protected]) ... tell me a little about yourself and your tool, I'll be sure not only to check it out (if I haven't played with it already) and mention you, your tool, and your website.
Ultimately, though, the über-goal is to have MacLearning.org serve as a kind of portal ... a collection point ... for external tools and iTunes U expertise (ditto for Podcast Producer, etc. etc.). That way, you don't have to scour the forums for links to this kind of stuff ... for "how to's" and "here is the story of how we implemented yadda, yadda". The idea is not to replace the iTunes U forums here ... but to give you a simpler way to find the info you need. A first step is collecting info tools/techniques ... getting your story if you have a tool or solution.

I just got the final details from the mothership. Here they are:
    For Participants:
If you are announcing this webcast, be sure to include all of the following information:

  • Ip5: Press it to your shoulder and others are unable to hear anything

A simple gesture that people use daily. I have experienced this the moment i used my iphone 5 and i was wondering if anyone also experienced the same issue. Since after the iphone 5 was made longer than the iphone 4 or 4s, whenever ones hands are full, we tend to secure our phone using our ears and our shoulders to talk while doing some stuff. But amazingly, just because of the increased length, once this was done, the other party was unable to listen at all. I would need to reposition the phone where one hand was holding the phone before voice was clearly being heard. Other brands of phone, which are of the same length or even loinger, do not have this issue. Am i alone in having this? Thanks!

I have this issue too. I've also noticed that when I pull the phone away from my face the person on the other end can hear fine. It's only when I hold the phone between my ear and my shoulder the person on the other end can't hear. So I don't think distance from mouth-to-mic is the issue.
I think it might have something to do with putting pressure on the screen's surface?
Or it's because, when you put the phone between your sholder and your face, some part of your anatomy occludes the microphone. I wouldn't call that a design flaw as such. I don't really believe that the phones are designed with that particular use in mnd.
    Best of luck.

What is the difference between UIButton's [Custom] Background and Image property ?
They seems to both do the same thing...and they both works...why would I prefer one over the other ?

Ok, your company pays for support, and has a CSI number. Presumably, other people at the company already have MOS accounts? If so, one of them is probably the administrator for your company's CSI. When you go to http://support.oracle.com/ and open a new account, you'll provide your email, and your company's CSI. At that point, whoever has been designated administrator for your CSI will get an email from Oracle, letting them know you've created an account w/ their CSI, and asking them to accept or reject your account request. If they accept it, your account will then be functional, and you'll be able to login to MOS.
So, find out who the admin is for your CSI, talk to them, go from there.
    Hope that helps,
    -Mark
