Poor 5Ghz Performance on New 2013 Airport Extreme

I just replaced two of the 5th generations AP Extremes with the new 802.11ac 6th Gen Ap Extremes.  My setup (that worked fine in 5th gen) is 2 Extremes one as main router and one in bridged mode.  Both of them are hanging of gig ethernet backhaul and both advertise the same SSID on the same 2.4 and 5ghz channel on both.  (there is one ssid for 2.4 and one for 5ghz).  When I connect to the 5GHz SSID it works fine for about 3-5 mins then it gets almost unbearable slow.  Switching back to 2.4ghz SSID makes it fast again (though not as fast as 5ghz normal of course).  I have now seen this happen on a 11" and 13" air (not the new ones the last gen).  I thought it was because I migrated from old configs so I redid the setup from scratch and have the same issue.  Anyone else seen that?

Your original setup sounds a bit complicated.. obviously it worked but if you had asked me I would say it has some issues.
In the old setup were the computers connecting to 5ghz signal.. or 2.4ghz.
In your new setup.. if you just use 2.4ghz is it working ok?
Remember the AC Extreme has much better range.. but the computers do not.. they have exactly the same range as before. Even higher gain antenna at 5ghz might not actually give you better range. If you test the air in the same room as the AC.. does it still fade out?
With the way you have it running now do you have the two computers in very different areas of the house?
Beam forming.. hmmm.. two different computers in two different areas could get confused.
Also there is too much auto happening. Can you lock the wireless channel.. on 5ghz at least and stick with the lower ones.. around 36-40 if possible. Apple made it auto rotate channels on the router end and auto rotate bands on the client end.. that can cause issues.

  • Want to extend my WLAN (ZyXEL) using 2013 airport extreme; doesn't work... Any ideas?

    Hi
I want to extend my WLAN (using a ZyXEL VDSL-modem) with 2013 airport extreme. Doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?
Does APE only work with Twisted Pair cable? That's the only way so far I can access the Internet using APE. But that was not my plan when I ordered it. So - am I wrong or is there a solution (without buying airport express on top of it …)?
    I am using AP utility v 6.3.1., OS X 10.8.4.
    Thanks
    swissgerman

In your case, you will need to connect the AirPort to the ZyXEL product with an Ethernet cable.
As far as your question of Does APE only work with Twisted pair cable?
I cannot answer for all products. I said "probably" because as far as I know and have tested....the Apple products will not "extend" a signal from another manufacturer wirelessly.
There might be a product that works with Apple. But, someone else will have to tell you what that product might be.
If you want to extend using wireless with Apple.....as far as I know.....it takes two Apple products to do this.

  • Connecting an USB drive is causing the status light to turn yellow on 2013 Airport Extreme

I recently purchased a new Airport Extreme ac to improve wifi performance in my house. It has been working fine. Today I decided that I would try to connect one of my USB backup drives to the Airport Extreme. As soon as it is connected, the status light goes yellow. It appears to be trying to read the drive, which has only a timemachine backup folder on it. But the status light never comes back to green.

Well, I unplugged the drive from my laptop and plugged it in to the airport extreme again and this time it stayed green and I now see the drive in the airport utility under partitions. Very odd. Going to try restarting the airport to see if it will go green.

  • New Macbook airport extreme will be disconnected sometimes

I bought my new macbook several days ago, but I found the airport extreme always disconnected several minutes, why? I call my friends via skype, but sometimes the call will be disconnected! who can tell me why?

I have the same problem and I am not alone. My old PowerBook Ti has no problems but my MacBook drops connections even when 5 ft from the router.

  • Connectivity via ethernet ports with new Apple Airport Extreme pre-n router

I am still somewhat of a newbie with Macs and particularly, when it comes to network issues. I have a new Intel iMac (replacing an older G5 iMac) that attached to the wired portion of my home network via a Netgear workgroup switch and a Netgear (wireless) router. The new box is running 10.4.10. I only use the wireless aspect for two workstations on the upper level of my house (with the use of a Netgear access point) as well as for my MacBook. I was able to install the complete HP OS X drivers and software that gave full functionality to my HP7310xi including scanning.
I have always had problems with using the iChat video function (usually just a vague "communications error" message) and the only consistent solution was to connect it directly to my cable modem when I wanted to use it. A good friend suggested I should check out the new Extreme pre-n router as it may eliminate that issue.
So, without doing enough homework, I installed it and voila! The network was MUCH faster and the signal was so strong upstairs that I was able to remove the access point! And, the iChat video feature worked first time, every time including wireless-ly from my MB Pro on the patio. It's a miracle!
However, I quickly realized two major problems:
The HP 7310xi printer no longer available to the iMac, even via Bonjour nor was my son's Xbox 360. I was able to attach the printer to the USB port on the Airport, which worked but is impractical because of the geographic layout of my home office. I have poured through these forums and found lots of postings regarding these two issues but they all seem to be addressing wireless pre-n issues. I am using the Airport Extreme, in the case of both the HP printer and the Xbox, as a wired router and am wondering where I can look to find that issue addressed specifically. I have set it up as b/g compatible as well. Oddly, I was able to get more functionality via my only Windows (XP Pro) box via Bonjour than I was from the iMac.
Do I really need to build two separate networks to address these two issues?

  • New for Airport Extreme (model A1408)

Apple's tweaked AirPort Extreme serves stronger Wi-Fi with 2.8X power boost
    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/06/23/apples_tweaked_airport_extreme_has _better_wi_fi_signal_with_2_8x_power_boost.html
Might help reaching those that need alittle more reach within their structures.

another change with the new airport extreme (2011 version) it is now wifi certified for "stbc" whatever that is.
    wikipedia says:
Space–time block coding is a technique used in wireless communications to transmit multiple copies of a data stream across a number of antennas and to exploit the various received versions of the data to improve the reliability of data-transfer. The fact that the transmitted signal must traverse a potentially difficult environment with scattering, reflection, refraction and so on and may then be further corrupted by thermal noise in the receiver means that some of the received copies of the data will be 'better' than others. This redundancy results in a higher chance of being able to use one or more of the received copies to correctly decode the received signal. In fact, space–time coding combines all the copies of the received signal in an optimal way to extract as much information from each of them as possible.

  • New Base Airport Extreme 802.11n .....bugs

    Well,
I have just read tens of posts in many forums, included this one.
It seems that the Base Airport Extreme 802.11n has severe problems of connections to internet.
    That's is also my case.
    This is my config.
    1. Modem NetGear DM111P <--> WAN Base Airport Extreme 802.11n
    2. LAN Base Airport Extreme 802.1n <--> Ethernet iMac 24"
    3. LAN iMac as DHCP auto IP
    4. Base Airport set for PPPoE
There is no way to get into Internet.
If I connect the Modem DM111P directly to the iMac 24" LAN the Internet is on, fast, fluid.
With the Airport in betwwen....no way...
    Any help ?
I am seriously thinking Apple has distributed a product full of bugs.
Read other forums with same problem.

    James,
Confirmed: the NetGear <--> AEBS <--> iMac does not work.
I have set the Bridge Mode as you suggest, but nothing, no internet !
Othe 3 hours of tests in setting tens of conigurations. No one works.
All the leds of the NetGear Modem as the one in the AEBS are solid green.
I will return back the NetGear modem to the retailer.
I am now running with my old Pirelli Modem from Alice Service (Telecom Italia Net) that - even if slower - at least it works.
I am concluding that the Airport Extreme has seriuos problems of compatibility with the open market modems.
Apple should check the SW+HW before selling such difficult items as the the Airport Extreme base.
Just a question: which model/type of modem(s) is(are) effectively compatible with the AEBS ?
If the retailer will permit me this, I will replace the NetGear (a very good modem...what a pity) with a compatible one with this strange base.
    Thaks for your help.

  • Poor 5GHz Performance from Extreme ?

    Hi
I have set up my new Extreme as a WiFi extender on my modem. I have turned off WiFi on the modem so there is only the Extreme. I have postioned the AE about 20 feet away at the bottom of my stairs from my study which is on the forst floor. So there is almnost a line of sight but not quite. I am getting a transmit rate of 176 (I assume Mbs)
Is this good ? I look at other makes such as Linksys or Asus and see better test results than the AE.

  • Poor WiFi performance on new Mac Mini ?

My new mac mini purchased a few days ago (late 2009) was exhibiting abysmal WiFi performance on 802.11n 5Ghz. I was barely getting 1Mbyte/sec through it, despite good signal strength (-50db), and my iMac which is feet away on -58db is giving almost 18Mbyte/sec...
Anyway - after much gnashing of teeth, and even placing the mini next to my extreme basestation I gave up, then tried, out of desperation, resetting the PRAM... Fixed!
Why on earth a brand new machine should need this doing, I'm not sure, but the old Alt-Cmd-P-R at boot up, waiting for the second BONG, and then letting it continue, fixed everything, and it now zooms along as fast as my other Macs.
Just for info - hope it helps someone!

These are pings from my iMac to .02 (mbpro) and .11 macmini
the mbpro is sat right next to the mac mini... rebooting the mini sorts this out... Come on, somebody must have this problem as well?

  • Wrt600N poor 5Ghz performance

I have the WRT600N router and am using the dual band wireless feature.  I have the 2.4G band setup for Wireless G to give internet access to my Tivos...
My laptops and pc's are on the 5Ghz band set for Wireless N only.
The 2.4G Band has excellent signal throughout the house, heck even outside in the street it has good reception...  The 5Ghz band however has excellent signal next to the router, but leave that room and it drops to poor...  My N devices are constantly dropping connection.  I replaced a wrt300N with this router so that I could specifically have my tivos on their own band and not have to have mixed settings.  However the wrt300n had excellent coverage for the N devices and the new router is located in the same place as the old router....
    Here are my specific settings:
    2.4Ghz Band
    Network Mode: G Only
    Radio Band:  default - 20Mhz
    Wide channel: default - auto
    Standard channel:  9
    SSID Broadcast:  enabled
    5Ghz Band
    Network Mode:  N Only
Radio Band:  Wide - 40Mhz    (I have tried AUTO as well with no improvements)
Wide Channel: 46 (I have tried other setting as well)
Standard Channel: 48 - 5.240Ghz (I have tride other setting as well)
Wireless security is WPA2 + AES on both bands
I was using mac filtering as well...  I turned it off until I get this issue resolved, not that it was the problem, just didn't want to have to enter in mac each time I swapped out new/different nics to see if that was the issue
My 2G band devices all have G rated usb nics (tivo brand)
My 5G band devices have Dual band 5G Linksys usb or express card nics
Wired network, as usual is functioning perfectly
    Please help...

well I'm not so sure there isn't something causing interference now....  I fiddled with the settings a bit to no avail....
I then changed the position of the router AND also changed the two outer anntenas to point straight up and the middle antenna faces the outer ones.  The signal has improved everywhere except the bedroom.  There I'm getting approx 35Mbit and everywhere else downstairs I get between 130 and 190...  Upstairs its full 270 no matter where....
So it may be something in my master bedroom that's causing some interference I just need to find out what...
I will call this fixed and the fix was antenna position....
oh yeah and I set everything in the advanced settings to auto.  Previously CTS was disabled and N Transimission was set to 270...  So that may be it also.

  • New powerbook - airport extreme does not connect after Tiger update

    Hi guys,
I see a lot of people are having problems with airport right now. I just got a new powerbook that worked fine with Panther, went online without a hitch. I downloaded a couple of software updates but don't know which. Then I installed the Tiger software and since then the computer does not connect. It show a wifi signal but tells me it can't connect etc.
    Any ideas,
    Thanks
    Sabina

    Hi Sabina,
I had the samething happen to me. I talked to tech support and they just had me click on the blue apple at the top- go to software updates- than I ran that...there was an update in there that corrected my problem. and I have been able to get get back my network!!
    so give that a try.

  • New Airport Extreme performing same as previous model..

Reading about the improved wireless range/performance on the newest airport extreme (MC340LL/A, A1354), I just picked one up hoping I could improve on my older one (MB763LLA, A1301).
Sadly, it seemes to be performing either equally or slightly worse!
I used istumbler to test the signal strength in a bunch of locations, and each airport extreme was set to the same 2.4 and 5ghz channels.
The firmware for each unit is current, as is that of the mbp I used to test...
Any thoughts? I guess the new extreme isn't worse keeping?

It may be of small (no) consolation for you to know that I get a better signal from non-Apple 'g' series units that are a good deal further away from my computer than I do the new Extreme. In answer to your question (probably rhetorical) about keeping it - after lots of fruitless Apple tech-support advice and a replaced unit, I can only suggest not.

  • Airport Extreme Base Station as an wireless Extender to new Airport time capsule

After many months of time machine back up problems. (verify back up failing) I am considering biting the bullet and getting a new 2TB Airport extreme time capsule. Can I use the old (late 2013 801.11ac) airport extreme to extend wifi network?
    A few other questions.
    1.Does extending reduce wifi performance?
    2. If using extreme as extender can I still plug in hard drive or hard drive to it?
    3.
currently using imac 21.5 (late 2013) 1TB backing up to 6TB WD mybook live duo (connected to Extreme using ethernet), via airport extreme base station (ac wireless band to mac)
    Any guidance appreciated.

Is it possible to quantify how much faster USB back up is compared to 802.11ac between mac and AirPort time capsule?
600GB should take 10 hours by ethernet. And it will be somewhat faster by USB3.. exactly how fast is difficult to predict as the first TM backup itself is slow due to many small files. In terms of raw speed maybe twice but it will depend on the disk used. USB you can use an SSD and get super huge speed. (not that I think you will be buying a 1TB SSD anytime soon).
In terms of raw speed it is cheese and chalk. The max speed of real world file transfer on AC wireless is around 430Mbps and that is using ideal world.
    http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/bar/113-5-ghz-dn-c?see=MAX
This has nothing to do with link speed.. this is how fast a file actually transfers. And that is assuming the iMac and the TC are in the same room. And everything is perfect with nothing else using connection.
The real world speed of USB3 is around 100MB/s to a spinning hard disk..
    http://www.macworld.com/article/2039427/how-fast-is-usb-3-0-really-.html
which may indicate the limit is the actual disk speed. In bits per second you x 8.. so the USB3 is 800Mbps. The advantage of USB direct connection is that speed is available at all time. Not when your close or the load on wireless is low.
Further to your comments when extending. Is it only the area covered by extending that has reduced performance or all the wifi signal?
The speed will depend on hops..
So if the computer is using resources on a local router.. and only one wireless hop then it is fast.
If it is using resources via a second router so wireless goes.. computer--- router2----router1-- resource.
Your speed drops 50% at best.. at worst it is really bad.
For example.. computer 1 on router 1 accesses computer 2 hard disk on router2 with everything wireless.
    Count the hops. C1-R1, R1-R2, R2-C2
That gives 3 hops. So each packet is transmitted.. along that chain.. each transmission can only begin after it is received in full. Now add some other computers using resources.. say C3 is using internet via R1.. that has to be time sliced. So you get 50% of 50% of 50% of 50%. It is obvious that wireless networks have a huge handicap.. they cannot transmit and receive at the same time.. nor can they talk to more than one client at a time.. so add time slicing to wireless hopping.
Now ethernet is entirely different. It can transmit and receive at the same time.. ie is duplex. And in a switch it can talk to several computers at the same time. That is why we say.. as much as you can ethernet.. and use wireless as the last single hop to a client that needs it.. ie iphone or ipad.. or laptop if you cannot plug in ethernet.
Can the ac wifi format be extended using AirPort Extreme and time capsule.
Over very short range yes. AC wireless is only on 5ghz and is poor penetration of solids.. so this will work but maybe only to the next room.

  • My brand new out the box airport extreme won't let anything connect to it.

My brand new out the box 5th gen (2013) airport extreme won't let anything connect to it. I've tried several setups from sratch by the book. multiple resets and restores still nothing. It just keeps telling mt that the password is in correct even though it is 100% right.
My curren set up is as follows. Phone Line -> ADSL2+ router -> Airport extreme. There is also an old airport express running of the router, this was done because the airport extremem was failing to work.
    Trying to connect:
    2x iPhone 4s
    2x macbook air
    2x Mac Pro.

You will want the Extreme to be in bridge mode if it is currently disabled. (see image below)
This will allow the ADSL2+ router to perform two important functions for your entire network: 1) Provide both the DHCP & NAT services, and 2) Provide PPPoE support to allow access to your ADSL ISPs network.
If the Extreme is left in its default state, a router, it will conflict with the first item and you will have want is known as a "double NAT" condition. Something you will want to avoid.
