Poor/B&W Video During Capture/Import

I am trying to convert those old VHS tapes into digital video for editing, burning, etc. I am capturing through a Canopus ADVC-55 and iMovie HD 6. The problem is that the imported video is in black and white whereas on tape it is clearly in color. I have used more than one tape in case the first one was somehow faulty. I have been searching through the Apple site and elsewhere on the net for what might be the cause but I have come up empty handed. Is there a setting (hardware or software) that I have somehow overlooked? Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.

You certainly could do the analog outs from the deck to the kbox... if so, capture it as DVCPROHD... It's actually my preferred workflow with HDV sources. Not going to deliver HDV anyway, right? If you need an HDV master in the end, just reencode the DVCPROHD to HDV and record that clip back to HDV...
Technically, there will be a touch of loss, but my old eyes don't see it, and titles and graphics would be better in DVPCROHD in any event. Let alone the render times... 8 times faster renders in DVCRPROHD than in HDV... I've written an article about this very thing in the current issue of the Creative COW magazine, free download here after registering: http://magazine.creativecow.net/index.html

  • Green/Purple video during HD import

While importing HD video from both Sony and Canon HD videocameras via Firewire 800, the video plays in green and purple. During review of the imported video, the screen shows normal colors with flickering intermittent green and purple. Any ideas? Both video cameras downloaded normally to my G5 imac via Firewire 400. Can a malfunctioning Firewire 800 cable cause this?

Fine, but iMovie 5 still doesn't work with Snow Leopard!

  • No video Preview During Capture

    Here is the scoop:
    Adobe Premeire CS5
    Windows 7 64bit
    Canon XL2
    Capturing DV NOT HDV
Canon standard device control as there is no preset listed for the XL2
Video and audio actually captures fine. I can hear audio during capture but cannot see any video.
I know there is no video preview when capturing HDV but I am capturing DV.
Again this is CS5 NOT 5.5 so .dll fix is not an option
    Thanks in advance.

    FIXED!
    Heres how it went:
Went to Device Manager and let windows look for an updated driver for my Graphics Card (Radeon HD 4200). Windows said the most current driver was installed. It was NOT the most current driver. I went out to ATI and got the most current driver, installed, reboot and OH JOY! I get video in the capture window during preview AND during capture (of DV)!
I also let windows (device manager) look for updated drivers for sound and it said the driver was the most current. Again, it was not. so the moral of the story is...Don't trust Device Manager on current driver versions.
Hope this will help some folks out there.
    Side Note*
Most of us spend hours on forums looking for answers/fixes to particular problems. Most replies I see are either in the vein of "I have that problem too" or " try this, it worked in this OTHER version or try this OTHER software" etc. If you dont have an answer/fix for the problem, dont post.
ON the flip side of that, when posting a problem you want an answer to, Give all the pertinent information in your initial question. " Premiere crashes when I plug up my camera" does NOT suffice! What version of Premiere, what camera, what OS, What kind of connection, etc.

  • Premiere Pro will not import a video I captured in Premiere.

I am working with Premiere Pro Cs6, on an HP laptop, with Windows 8. This is the first time I was capturing video from a Canon XL H1. When I finished capturing, Premiere did not give me any further prompts, and when I preceded to try to import the video I captured, it is telling me that "there was an error decompressing audio or video." I need to finish this job by the end of the week, so any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

  • Video preview during capture CS3

Video preview during capture is not working even though settings are at preview video and audio during capture.
The work around seems to be to go ahead record anyway (red button) then it works after I paste the captured audio onto the timeline.
When pasting it to the timeline the video appears. The video appears during subsequent captures. It seems like a bug in CS3. This was not a problem with PP 1.5
    Thanks

these details will help us help you.

  • Capturing/Importing Video

I am new to a Mac so please bear with me. I have not been successful in capturing/importing video (from my camera) using iMovie. The camera is a Sony DCR-IP5 using MicroMV tape. It is connected with a firewire to the Mac, yet is not recognized.
Is this a software issue and if so, what is recommended.
    Thanks,
    Ron

Instead of typing it all out again-go to Dan Slagle's site and read I have a Sony DCR-IP camera and it does not work

  • Video Stuttering during capture

I know this has been discussed in the past, but I cannot seem to find it; hope someone will help.
I am capturing old VHS tapes using Premiere 10 media capture via a Canopus ADVC55.  The clips I'm transferring suffer from stuttering during capture (approx every 1 sec).  I seem to remember that this indicated a timing issue from stretched tape or something.  I hate to think that's the case.  Could it be anythng else, and is there a workaround?
    Thanks,
    Julian

    Steve,
I had an informative (but ulimately depressing) talk today with an engineer at Grass Valley.  He said that the ADVC55 adherence to the NSTC spec is quite tight, and suggested I try another source as an input to the device.  I plugged in a Sony camcorder and it converted seamlessly.  He suggested the VHS player (or tape) doesn't meet the NSTC spec, and that I try another VHS player that may be tighter to the spec.  If is also possible that my old VHS camcorder originally used to create the tapes didn't meet the spec.  The ADVC-300 contains time-base correction that could alleviate this, but is substantially more costly.  The cheap Diamond A/V converter probably isn't as sensitive to the spec, and is therefor more forgiving.
All interesting, but in the end, I have a fairly expensive device that won't help me.  I guess I can look for another VHS player to try, but it sounds like a lot of effort for a long shot.  Any ideas on a work-around?  I'm stuck.
By the way, MediaInfo shows the following for the  Diamond device:
    Format:  YUU
    Codec:  UYUY          http://www.iis.fraunhofer.de/en/bf/amm/http://
    Frame Rate:  59.940 fps
    Resolution:  480x720
The link must be to the developer.

  • Scene Detection during capture

I will try to keep this simple. Here's some background on what I am trying to accomplish. I shoot sporting events for recruitment videos. During the games I start and stop recording on each play. So at the end of the day I end up with 100+ clips for each game/match. During capture I need my software to be able to detect each scene which saves me valuable time in post. I can quickly scrub each clip and decide what to dump. I shoot in HD(HDV) because the resolution allows me to do much more during post.
Premiere Pro does not detect HD(HDV) scenes as every other NLE I have seen does. So my first question is why not? I hate having to use multiple NLEs/programs when the Adobe Suite of programs should do the job.
Without getting into why, I currently capture on a Macbook because iMovie and/or Finalcut will detect scenes. Then I use my Mac OS copy of Premiere Pro (CS3) to edit since it does allow me to import .mov files BUT I have CS4 Production Premium on a much more powerful PC which I would love to use BUT I cannot import the .mov files I have captured on my Macbook to PP CS4 on the PC ... I get a codec missing or unavailable message. Which I don't understand when Adobe publishes .mov files as being supported under the windows version. I contacted Adobe Support and was told the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) is not supported. How can that be? Isn't that Apples standard Codec? Sorry for the long winded post but there has to be a workaround or something simple I am missing. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Ok I have confirmed that setting the capture codec to ProRes422 when capturing via Finalcut Pro 6 on my Macbook Pro will allow me to import the same clips to Premiere Pro CS4 on my windows vista PC. Thanks again Colin!
Why? Because I use my Macbook Pro on location. I film sporting events which I have found works best in post if I start/stop recording after each play. I end up with 100 or so clips. I am making highlight videos so it is easier to scrub through small clips to determine what I am going to use than it is to scrub through the same 2 hour footage to tag in/out points. To get the clips I need a capture program that can detect scenes. Finalcut does this automatically during capture. I prefer to do all of my post in Premiere Pro but it will not detect scenes with HD/HDV footage. Finally when I get the footage home I have a much more powerful PC to edit and render out and being able to just transfer my .mov clips from the MacBook to the PC for import to PP is awesome.

  • CS4 no video when capture

I'm using Premiere CS4 to capture footage, and everything shows up fine during capture, but once it is captured, and I play the video in Premiere, there is only audio and no video. I am capturing from a Canon Vixia HV40, however the footage was shot on a Sony Carl Zeiss MiniDV (it didn't have a firewire port).  I have it set to NTSC 29.93fps, standard, which is what it was filmed on.  Please tell me how to fix this problem.

Try the capture: settings>device control>options>DV \ HDV device settings> device brand and device type. Are they set properly?
I don't see the Canon Vixia in the list of camera models there. In that case you can try different alternatives from the list. Try using a similar model from the list.
In case of emergency, you can also capture with movie maker and then import your footage.

  • Unable to monitor audio during capture

I'm using FCP6 to capture footage shot with a JVC GY-HD100U at HDV 720p24. I'm using a JVC BR-HD50 deck to capture from, connected to my MacPro 3 GHz quad via firewire.
In the Audio/Video Setting dialog box, the Sequence Preset is "HDV 720P24". My Capture Preset is "HDV", Device Control Preset "HDV FireWire". Video Playback shows "[Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480)" and offers only the options of None and Digital Cinema Desktop Preview–Main as alternate choices. Both HDV options are greyed out. The Audio Playback option is set to Default.
With this setup, controlling the deck remotely from the capture window, I get video but no audio. The only audio I get is when the deck is connected to my video monitor and I use it to monitor the output of the deck. The audio is there when I play back the clips after capture but I cannot monitor the sound with the computer's speakers. If I go to the A/V Devices tab, under Video, it shows the same "[Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480) with the same choices described above, and the Options button next to it doesn't do anything.
Can anyone think of anything I've missed in the initial setup?

    Keith,
For whatever reason (perhaps the intense processor needs) HDV does not allow you to monitor your audio during capture. The computer just will not do it. What I have done, if I really want to hear what's happening durning capture, is plug my speakers into the headphone jack of my XL H1. Due to the processing that's going on, the audio "lags" behind the video by a couple of seconds.
I'm pretty sure this is not a setup problem, but just a limitation due to the nature of your format.
    Hope that helps!

  • Dropped Frames During Capture

FCE HD is dropping frames during capture when I'm taking video from my Canon Video camera and the three DVD players I've been using. Any suggestions or ideas?
    Here's my info:
    - Didn't work for either of these setups:
    - Canon to my iBook G4 via firewire
    - DVD player to DVD converter via RCA cables to ibook via firewire
    - My external Harddrive (LaCie 230 GB) is hooked up to my laptop via USB Drive.
    - Easy setup configured to DV-NTSC or DV-NTSC-DV Converter dpending on capture device
Thanks in advance for the help

    Hi Lisa,
Well, for starters you probably have less free space on your internal HD than you did a year ago - rule of thumb is keep at least 15%-20% free space on your drives, especially your system drive; more free space is better. Couple that with the fact that USB really can't keep up with the demands of video and it's easy to get dropped frames.
There's also the question of what else you've put on your machine since last year, whether or not you updated OSX or QT since then, if you have anything else running when you capture ... there could be lots of factors.
Have you ever run a maintenance utility on your Mac - eg. MacOSXCocktail, MacJanitor, Onyx, etc ?

  • No sound captured during Capture Now

First time in many moons using FCP. I'm capturing from a mini DV (Canon Eulura 70) using the Capture Now function. The problem is that it appears that no sound is being captured. I've read other posts about not hearing sound during capture... at the moment I'm using headphones connected to the camera and the sound is fine. I'd prefer to use the computer to monitor the sound but I cannot locate a checkbox anywhere to turn this feature on.
When I drop the captured clips onto the canvas no corresponding audio file appears in the timeline, and no audio plays during playback. I've checked the clip setting in log/capture and it's set to capture both video and audio. I've checked System Settings, and under Scratch disks it's set to capture video and audio separately. Audio playback in FCP is set to built-in audio. Sound is working fine in all other applications.
I've tried trashing the preference files but no effect. Also I tried to just capture audio, and as soon as I hit esc, FCP crashes... this is totally repeatable. I also noticed that on the clip setting tab there is a section with a bunch of sliders (7 in all)... don't know what they do, but they are all greyed out.
    Camera works fine in iMovie...

There are no check boxes on that tab, only a pull down list entitled "Capture". The choices are Video and Audio, Video only, Audio only. I have it set to Video and Audio. Perhaps there are checkboxes in another version?

  • Lost photos due to Image Capture Import Error

Hi.. I lost my hundreds of precious photos taken during my vacation during the import process using Image Capture.
I took hundreds of photos in my iphone 5s during my vacation. I came back and haven't started the iphone backup yet which was my first mistake.  I then used Image Capture in my MacBook Pro to transfer the photos from 5s camera roll to a folder in my macbook.  I checked the option "Delete After Import" which was my second mistake!
During the transfer, it successfully transferred some of the photos but over half of them were not.  There was errors after the import process so those error out pictures were not found neither in my Macbook nor in my iphone.
I tried different recovery tool to scan my iphone or my macbook but still no luck.  Can you one of you give me some help on this?  What else can be done to recover the lost picture.  A million million thanks to you all in advance!

Same thing happened to me. I tried using iPhoto to back up over 8,000 photos. Unfortunately, I kept getting an error at around 3,000 and had to start over several times. After restarting my macbook, I was able to get further but after around 1,000 to go, the error popped up again! Hours! So I chose Image capture to get everything. I too selected 'delete after copying' to avoid having to delete 8k pics manually. After it was done, I was alerted that some photos could not be copied. When I checked the folder, only 4k pics were there! Where's the other 4k? On top of that, my phone which is over capacity still shows over capacity and has about 600 files with missing icons on them. Not sure what to do. Curious if a restoration of the phone will bring it all back.

  • Video Batch Capture

During the 1990s I edited my DV firewired footage on Canopus Storm editing which, from the start, had a very simple but marvelous Batch Capture facility enabling frame accurate clips to be captured to the timeline.   Could anyone tell me which of the Premiere Elements software packages has this Batch Capture function.   Thanks Mike

I do not know of any. And the DV and HDV data capture firewire has been removed from the latest version Premiere Elements 13/13.1. The last version to have this feature is 12/12.1.
I see details for Video Batch Capture for Premiere Pro but not Premiere Elements.
