Poor BB Speed - possible faulty cabling?

Hi Everyone,
I moved house 2 months ago and have had BB speed issues since moving - best speed between 200 and 500 kbps.
I live about 150 to 200 metres from the exchange, on the same road and can see it from by bedroom window - BT's website states an approximation on the speed of 21Mbps, some difference!!
My ISP won't pass the issue to Openreach as they state my BB connection is stable - they don't seem concerned about the speed, and I know if I report a line fault myself I am going to be charged £££ as the phone line is working ok.
I have already replaced the bottom half of my (very old and very yellow) NTE with an adsl filter one - BT fitted one of these in our previous house, that has made no difference, nor did removing the internal extensions and connecting the modem/router via a dangly filter to the test socket - I left it like this for a week.
I have been doing some investigations and the cable to our house from the pole (there is no green box on the road between my house and the exchange) seems to be shared with our neighbour - it's hooked up to the wall of the house near the gutter where there is a small black box underneath - 2 cables come out of this, one of them ours. Our cable is visually much older than the other neighbours - the neighbours cable is black and seems to be the same type of cable coming across from the pole, our cable is brittle and light grey and has 2 halfs, like very cheap bell or speaker wire (certinally not twisted pair by any imagination!) and runs right alongside the mains power coming into the house - both cables are running alongside each other for about 5 metres. This cable then comes down to the front door, and in behind the door fram - behind the door inside there is a very old looking bt connection box - brown in colour and oval in shape - in here is a rats nest of cables and what look like screw connectors and fuses!?! - the cable then leaves this (on much newer looking cable) along a short run of the skirting before going into the NTE in the kitchen, the modem/router is connected direct into the NTE (on the adsl port obviously!)
I am convinced that it's this poor cable and the old joint box that is causing the issues? - How would I go about getting BT/Openreach to replace this if my ISP will not report it to them, and my phone line (for voice) is working?

'the cable to our house from the pole (there is no green box on the road between my house and the exchange) seems to be shared with our neighbour'
The cable from the pole to the property will either by a drop wire 10b, which has two pairs in it, i.e. enough wires for two line or a CAD55 cable, which is a four pair (4 lines).
'our cable is brittle and light grey and has 2 halfs, like very cheap bell or speaker wire'
That sounds like a drop wire 6, 6 as in its from the 1960's. Actually its not called drop wire 6 because of that but it would have been there since the late 60's or early 70's.
Anyhow, the only people who can replace that are Openreach and they have a policy of; 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'.

  • Poor Internet speed, TC 535kbps but through WAG300N 6654kbps

Ok so I took the plunge and purchased a new TC 1TB yesterday and after going through the Airport Utility setup process everything seems to be working apart from the very poor internet speed when connecting via the TC > WAG300N.

    Connect Using: Ethernet
Ethernet WAN Port: Automatic (Default) +*I have tried all the options with this setting*+
Connection Sharing: Share a public IP address +*I have also tried the "Off (Bridge Mode) setting*+
    TCP/IP
IP Address: I have set manual
Router address: Points to my WAG300N
DNS Server(s): This is set to my WAG300N +*I have tried the DNS addresses from my ISP which still result in the 535kbps Download speed*+
I have tried different Cat cables and different ethernet slots from the TC WAN to the WAG300N, I have also connected my MacBook with an ethernet cable directly to the TC. The hardwired connection still gave me the same speed test results.
I hope I have listed all the information that someone might need to help me out. If you need any further details just shout and I will post them.
One last thing, could this be a faulty Time Capsule?

    Good News
I borrowed my father-in-law's old 3COM modem/router to test out my feeling that the ethernet ports on my WAG300N were not playing ball.
I'm now a very happy bunny! setting the 3COM in Bridge Mode and using PPPoE on the Time Capsule I have my MacBook and iPhone the wife's XP laptop and BlackBerry all running through the Time Capsule
My speeds are now as they should be:

  • I recently upgraded from my iPhone 3 to iPhone 4S. My old iPhone had been unable to sync for some time and I blamed it on the faulty cable. With my new cable I tried to sync the 3 before advancing to the 4S to be sure I had all my data. Will not sync.

I recently upgraded from my iPhone 3 to iPhone 4s. My old iPhone had not completed a sync in some time because of a faulty cable. But the old phone still will not sync properly even with the new cable.
Now that I have my new iPhone, I would like to first sync the old phone so all the data will be available for the new phone. I would also like to have an extra copy of my audio ebooks on the old iPhone so my husband and I can both listen at the same time using earphones while driving long distances in the car and then discuss the book. We have been unable to do this with the old iPhone alone due to constant road noise.

I'm not sure what made the difference, but I tried again and it worked this time. ???????????

Genius bar says possible faulty HD, but I suspect logic board. All checks out OK on the Apple Diagnostic bench. Can a Logic board go intermittant?? Any Ideas any body??

Ive repaired 1000s of laptops over the years (translate: diagnose and replace parts).
Its not that old, Ive owned 100s of laptops (most were free) ....some I still have are nearly 13 years old and still perfect, ....some extremely expensive ones died in under a year.
other than becoming obsolete at some point, there isnt really any "will spoil on" data like Milk for solid state computer parts, ....alas.
You can have a $5000 laptop die in 4 months, and a junker one keep kicking after 10 years.... Ive seen that firsthand countless times.
Common logic dictates that "very expensive = long life" in computers,..... but all the repair people will tell you just the opposite.
I know you have a gripe, I get that all too well honestly .

You can try using Screen Sharing in the Sharing preferences. Or try a third-party utility such as ScreenRecycler.

  • Return it or don't return it - faulty cable

I've had a cable swapped out (for the 2nd time) as it burned out. The Apple site says I must return the faulty cable or I'll get charged. They've also given a returns label.
However, inside the package I received is a piece of paper that says 'Don't return this hardware', or something like that.
Why? And what should I do? I guess I can't do anything with the faulty cable, but it seems to me that if there's some fundamental problem with the electronics on my iPod causing burn-outs, I'd like to hold on to some of the evidence since I'm going to be annoyed when warranty lapses and they charge me every time it burns out.
    iPod 20Gb   Windows XP

They don't always want back the faulty parts.
The note probably does say to not return ANY parts.
I had my headphones replaced and it said NOT to return any faulty parts that were replaced.
They started asking for them back to keep people from simply getting "spares" when there was really nothing wrong in the first place.

  • Poor evening speed

Hi, i posted a problem a few weeks ago regarding poor evening speed, In The morningi get 40 70 mb but in the evening I only get about3/4 mb now at the time of posting my original thread i was told to leave the router plugged in to establish the connection Which I have done to no avail....So let me make the problem clear in the morning 30/70mb dropping to 3mb in the evening this is worse than my btbroadband In The evening
    Anyone help?
Tech help day the problem is in my house I can't see how when it's only the evening when the speed is bad.

Your IP Profile is not very clear but it looks to be 77.xx Mbps which is very good and would indicate that your line is very good and that DLM is not lowering your speeds. As you did the speed test on a wired connection that would rule out any wireless interference.
Due to this happening only in the evening, and to try and rule things out, have you noticed if it always happens at the same time?
Is the homehub sharing a double electrical socket with anything, such as a TV?
Is the homehub situated near anything that could cause electrical interference?

  • Poor internet speed getting slower

The area i live in has a very poor internet speed however in the last couple of months it has got significantly slower, where web pages arent evening loading and streaming is getting near impossible
BT call centre suggested leaving it an hour, then a day then a few days and they would 'fix' something. No change ever happens after these calls and leaving the internet unused for days at a time is getting unacceptable

  • Sg-200-08 poor udp speed

    Hi all,
I'm experiencing poor udp speed on my sg-200-08.
I'm running a nfs share on ubuntu server 12.04  to a ubuntu 11.10 client connected through udp protocol .
If I use an unmanaged sitecom (plastic crap) I get about 50MB/s transfers, with sg-200-08 I can't get over 12/13 MBs transfers.
I've tried to set on both server and client MTU = 1492 and I've changed firmware from 1.0.3.3 to 1.0.5.1 (I've not tested 1.0.6
because of some posts here regarding udp problems).
Can someone help me to resolve it?
    Regards Carmine

If that didn't fix it, there is an external factor. It can be a negotiation issue. Try setting the port speeds to manual such as 1000 full on each side or 100 full depending what the switch connects to.
You may also try to disable spanning tree globally.

  • Transfering- copying documents from IMac to MacBook Pro  - Migration Assistant or High Speed File share cable- which would be faster?

I started Migration Assistant to copy documents from my IMac to my new MacBook Pro - it started off saying "About 53 hours and 40 minutes remaining" to "About 64 hours and 47 minutes remaining" - I have a High Speed File Share Cable - should I have used that?

If you mean a FireWire cable, yes.
Your best bet is to start over.  See the green box in Problems after using Migration Assistant

  • Hi, I've just downloaded Aperture 3.2 and transfered all my iPhoto Library but now when I use the Aperture program it runs at the slowest speed possible and is almost impossible to work with. It is constantly processing why is this?

Hi, I've just downloaded Aperture 3.2 and transfered all my iPhoto Library but now when I use the Aperture program it runs at the slowest speed possible and is almost impossible to work with. It is constantly processing why is this?

You can click on the text that says 'processing' in the main windows and it will open (toggle) the Activity Window, (can also be accessed via the Window menu -> Show Activity.
It will tell you what Aperture is doing with more precision and perhaps even how many photos it still needs to process. It is generally best to wait until all that processing is done before you start working with the photos (well it is best to first turn of options what you dont want to use, perhaps Faces or Previews and then let it process the new photos).

  • 2nd Day of very poor unusable speed!!

Hi please help, connection so slow i cant even use my vision box, tried everything. my hub download sync was 18021kbps now it is 15784kbps which is ok but my actual speeds are 0.5 - 2mb. 2 days ago my bras profile was 15000kbps now its 13800kbps so dont know why my speedtests are slow. tried reseting hub, changing filter their must be a fault with exchange or bt end. thanks deb

    Hi Welcome to the forums
Here are some help pages done by CL Keith http://www.btinternet.com/~cbeddoe/others/noisemargin.html
If you post the full stats from your router
For homehub – type 192.168.1.254 into your browser
Navigate to ADSL Settings or use the A-Z at the top right of the home page and scroll down to ADSL Settings and click on it
Click on More Details and then post the full results.
also post the full results fromBT Speedtest speedtester.bt.com
Have you tried connecting to the test socket at the rear of the master socket
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
also you could try the hints given by poster RogerB in this link they may help http://community.bt.com/t5/BB-in-Home/Poor-Broadband-speed/m-p/14217#M8397
Then someone here may be able to help and offer more advice.

  • Poor Link Speed

I have been using the airport extreme for almost a year now, but recently I have been getting very poor link speed's of 13mbps instead of the desired 130mbps. Does anyone have any idea of why this could be? My router is up to date with firmware 7.3.2. I am transmitting at a multicast of 2 mbps, robustness is off, and it is set for n but allows b and g to connect as well.

No that merely raises the level used for detection of a usable signal. A usable signal does not guarantee high bandwidth.

  • Poor broadband speed and hub lockups

I've been with BT for donkeys years and need a reliable system for lots of business reasons.
When I first got a wireless hub, the old white version, I was plagued with poor reliability. Usually after a particularly sticky period the hub just locked up and needed its power lead unplugging and replugging to get it going again.
As most people discover, Indian call centres are just a waste of time.
One day it got really bad and I found I couldn't even use my telephone.
Nothing but fizzing and crackling. I found a special number (17070) that you can ring and this gives you a line test facility.
    Clearly my line was bad.
After a phone call to BT I was warned that if indeed my line did not turn out to be bad I would be charged a HUGE amount and I really shouldn't persue the matter.
Having been in Defence Communications since 1965 I decided to back my own diagnosis and to carry on and request an engineer to pay me a visit and hopefully diagnose a bad line.
A chap turned up the next day with a trainee in tow.
Within 30 seconds he'd spotted the problem.
Many years ago during a period of copper shortages, BT had used different types of wire. Unfortunately when you connect two different metals together and add moisture you have a battery. Metal is transferred from one wire to the other and you get oxidisation. The copper wire was just twisted with an aluminium wire and had been oxidising ever since it had rained after it was was fitted...
Down came a length of cable between the anchor point on my garage roof and the house and up went a new length of copper wire. Next a new junction box with an integral filter was fitted... all this done by the trainee (his first day with BT) and since then my broadband has been faultless. The speed which was usually around 1.5M is now 5.2M.
I suspect the main problem that resulted from the noise due to the oxidised junction was in the hub firmware.
Eventually a particular random set of crackles put the hum firmware into an odd state from which it could not recover.
Resetting by interrupting the power returned the firmware into a working state, until the next lockup crackle code.
    Hope this helps someone

    Hi Repairman
Well you were nearly right .....
Adaptive adsl uses a line algorithm to determine line speed and profile, which is run constantly at the dslam in the exchange.
Any crackles and pops or other line noise will cause the line speed to reduce in both throughput and IP profile, because it sees instability in the connection, due to the noise.
Once the noise is corrected, the dslam picks up the throughput and profile automatically, after a period of time has elapsed and noise levels are back to normal.
The only role the router plays is in "trying to negotiate" the best possible line speed for the line condition.
But thanks for the post, and sharing your experiences!
