Poor color

Hello:
I have an XL-2 and recently used it to video a sheep dog trial. I shot the video on Auto and brought it into Final Cut Pro 5.12. Then I exported it to the web using Sorenson Squeeze as a QT file. I am finding that as in the past, the contrast is rather weak, both in FCP and on the web. Why is this? Is this a setting I need to make in the XL-2 or is it something I should be doing in FCP. The video is 30MB. It can be seen here:
http://www.quechee-village.com/scottishfestival/sheepherdingqtmovie.html

Double click on your clip in the timeline. Effects>color correction>3 way color corrector
Open the tab in the viewer. ALSO open the scopes from the tools menu. Where are the blacks? I'll hazard a guess and say they're up around 10 or 15.
In the graphic window of the corrector, pull down the far left slider until you're kissing zero on the scopes. Does that make the picture any better? You might also try pulling down the far right slider a bit, depending on whether your whites (sky) are blown out and by how far. Look any better?
Try playing with the middle slider too to add back what you've taken away from the highs. Finally, mess with the saturation slider in case your other twiddles have dimmed the picture.
The 3-way is a complex tool but this should get you started with the basics. At least your white balance is good. CAUTION: you really need to be looking at your corrections on an external monitor that is properly calibrated.
I don't know the xl2 at all, so maybe someone else will chime in.

  • Have Apple 5... Suddenly photos are coming out too dark and poor color....any ideas as to problem

Camera taking poor pictures....too dark, flash goes off but picture quality poor.  Just started this recently

Did you alrready try the general troubleshooting?
Camera isn't functioning or has undesired image quality
If the screen shows a closed lens or black image, force quit the Camera app.
If you do not see the Camera app on the Home screen, try searching for it in Spotlight. If the camera does not show up in the search, check to make sure that Restrictions are not turned on by tappingSettings > General > Restrictions.
Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the lens.
Cases can interfere with the camera and the flash. Try gently cleaning the lens with a clean dry cloth or removing the case if you see image or color-quality issues with photos.
Try turning iPhone off and then back on.
Tap to focus the camera on the subject. The image may pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as it adjusts.
Try to remain steady while focusing:
Still images: Remain steady while taking the picture. If you move too far in any direction, the camera automatically refocuses to the center.
Note: If you take a picture with iPhone turned sideways, it is automatically saved in landscape orientation.
Video: Adjust focus before you begin recording. You can also tap to readjust focus while recording. Exiting the Camera application while recording will stop recording and will save the video to the Camera Roll.
Note: Video-recording features are not available on original iPhone or iPhone 3G.
If your iPhone has a front and rear camera, try switching between them to verify if the issue persists on both.

  • MFP M476dw poor color print quality with streaking

I bought this printer in January and only printed half a dozen or so color prints, but always has color streaks.  I have printed may 200 B&W pages and they seem OK. I ran the calibration I found in the operator interface, but doesn't make any difference. See attached original image and scan of the color print.  Yes the scan looks just like the color print.  Color cartridges all show 80% full.  B&W cartridge is 70%. scan of color print  Original ImageWhat can I do to improve this?  I really was expecting better color print quality.

  • Poor Color on TV after Transcoding with Encore

The color is bad when I view the DVD on my (Panasonic) DVD/VCR-TV that I created with PP/Encore; whereas, when the same DVD is run on my computer the colors are fine. They look just like the originals I worked on in Photoshop. So the problem appears to be with the way the TV is processing the data.
I created the slideshow of 260 photos in PP CS3; then exported to Encore and authored/burned from there without changing anything.
On TV, the images are more contrasty, and the colors seem hotter. Brown looks orange, etc.
I've adjusted the picture settings on the TV, but with little effect.
There's a similar issue when I run the DVD on my Phillips DVD player, but not as pronounced.
Is there some way to correct the colors after the file's been rendered in Premiere Pro and transcoded/authored in Encore?

When the Project was still in PrPro, did you monitor it on a feed to a calibrated NTSC (or PAL) CRT monitor? If you only judged it on the Program Monitor in PrPro, you could well be off. Going back to when the images were in PS, how is your monitor calibrated? Did you use a profile for NTSC (or PAL) Video, or perhaps one for CMYK printing, or RGB display?
Have you tried your DVD on another TV? Unfortunately, most TV's are improperly calibrated. To use one to judge, you should invest in a calibration disc, and run through the setup proceedure. This takes some time and some tweaking, but would be well worth it. Unfortunately, even after you have done this, and all looks perfect on your calibrated TV, you have no control over how the client's TV will be set up. If it's out of the box, with factory settings, it's likely to be way off. That is the unfortunate nature of video. It is actually easier to calibrate one's computer for, say CMYK print work, including their scanner, printers, cameras and monitor, than it is to get great video on several different TV's. Multiply that problem by the different types (and ages) of the displays and it gets out of hand in a hurry.
If you have a friendly retailer, especially one with high-end TV that HAVE been calibrated, ask if you can test your DVD on one of their systems.
Other than the necessary Transcoding to MPEG-2 and the changes in image quality there, Encore should not be changing the gamma, or the color. Also, remember that you are first judging your images on a higher-rez progressive computer monitor, and then compressing the files to a DVD with only the NTSC, or PAL resolution. No TV will ever look as good as a well-calibrated computer screen. That is one reason to view critically only on a true TV monitor fed from PrPro via FireWire.
Let's hope that it's just the device that you are checking the DVD on, but my $ would be on that as the likely problem.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Imported images have poor colors

    Friends,
I'm a new user to Motion 5 having what I hope is an easily-solved problem.  I want to create an animated image sequence.  The images were originally created and stored in Aperture.  Because I understand that Motion does not permit import from Aperture, I exported the images to a folder as full-size .jpgs.  I then imported them into Motion.
Unfortunately, they did not import well.  They are of a lower resolution and the colors are off.  What am i doing wrong?
If it matters, I'm using the late-2009 imac with mountain lion.
    Thanks!
    Steve

JPG is a *lossy* compression format. You probably exported the images with compression. Many applications start JPG compression at about 70% and if you weren't paying attention to that detail, the images may suffer loss of quality (actually the DO suffer loss of quality, it's just not always that perceptible... until "later").
    Image formats that are lossless:
    PNG
    TIFF
    PSD
possibly a few others, but my favorite one is PNG with PSDs a close second (so I don't care.)
Also, if by "lower resolution" you mean smaller in size, there's a Preference to regulate how Motion imports large images. On the Project pane of preferences, at the bottom: Large Stills > select Do Nothing. Motion will import the images at full "resolution" (that's an overloaded term— in programming parlance). You'll have to manually scale or fit them into your "scenes".

It's your good right to use any color profile you want ... but don't expect the result to be OK on every platform and browser.

  • C4740 - Poor Color Cartridge Life Span

When print 4x6 photos from my C4740 printer I am only getting about 18 prints from the color cartridge. The original cartridges that came with the print seemed to last forever. Since replacing them I have replaced the color cartridge 3 times and working on my 4 cartridge in the time span of 2 days. The ones that came with the printer lasted two months or longer.
So my question is what could be causing the cartridges to have such a short life span?
Is 18 to 20 4x6 photos normal yield for a ink cartridge?
Also I am noticing that the black cartridge ink level is not changing so it leads me to believe it is not being used. I thought it had previously been used when printing photos but I could be wrong.

Here are some specs re: Photo yield expectations for the C4600 which will reference same as C4700.

    HP 60 Tri-color Ink Cartridge (CC643W)

Actual yield varies considerably based on content of printed pages and other factors.

  • Brother Printing Issues. HL-4040CN Poor color printing quality!

Ok Gang... I'd like to get a problem fixed that I've been living with for over a year now. I posted this back almost a year ago and have been so busy.
I have a Brother HL-4040CN laser printer that printed perfectly when I bought it. About 4-6 months after that the colors started printing faded. I thought it was due to the fact that I had moved and had messed something up when moving. But here's the rub... When I print out the DEMO file that is on the printer, it prints beautiful. But when I print out from my mac which is hooked up via Ethernet, the colors print faded. I also put a simple PDF on a flash drive and printed straight through the printer and it was fine. So I'm at a loss. I am including the link from where I inquired last time and what I had already tried. I am also contacting Brother, but the last time I talked to them, they suggested that it was a software issue since it printed the demo fine.
Here is the link from the other forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2172633&tstart=0
Any other ideas I can try would be appreciated.

When I print out the DEMO file that is on the printer, it prints beautiful.
That's the key to knowing it is not a hardware issue.
This is clearly a software issue. Either the drivers have become outdated, or the setting in the page setup is not right for the source in question, or the source in question is not a high enough resolution.
I also put a simple PDF on a flash drive and printed straight through the printer and it was fine.
Now am I to assume that if you printed the same PDF from the computer, it doesn't print fine?

  • Poor Color printing from Printer

Now that one problem is solved, I have a bigger one. My new computer, designed and made to my liking, prints hues 5-8 shades darker than my LCD monitor.System: Vista 32 -bit, service Pack 1, video card Nvidia 9400GT Pci/SSE2, 2666 MHZ, video mode 1680x1050, physical processor count: 4, memory used by PS 70%.   My Photosmart printer, before Vista, printed gorgeous colors with  the computer that was replaced. I use "Photoshop Manages Colors", but the final rendition is not good.
I've not worked in color for print with this new printer at all, and  I'll have brochures and poster work coming up in the Fall. I can't offer crummy color for the final productions.
. Hope you can help get this 'puter doing better stuff. I'm wondering if the Video card could be the problem? I updated it a few weeka ago, and print colors were far from the LCD.  Ideas for getting better color intensities are needed and most welcome.  Thanks in advance....mm

    Marie,
It should be one of the grouping on the bottom "HPpspro........"  depending on what paper you are using.  Probably either the bottom one or the 4th one - ending in "tricolor+photo"  you might need to try a couple and see.
You seem to be having troubles with drivers for the "puck" ( the device that does the measuring).  On mine, those drivers were installed with the program and should have recognized.  But you seem to have found them elsware.  from the screen pic that you sent, the "win zip" option should allow you to open a zipped file.

  • FX5600, poor color quality problem

I have recently installed an MSI FX5600XT-TD256 into my PC cause my old card wasn't directx enabled so I got this one.  The picture quality is really average when you look at photos, the color of a light on in the background for example is very pixelated.  There's no smooth gradient of color.  I've tried installing the latest Nvidia drivers but still no luck.  If anyone could help it would be great.
    Thanks.

    timjd4,
Try changing your refresh rate and your monitor and see what happens.
    Take Care,
    Richard
P.S. If that does not help, you could always try a fresh install of your OS.

  • Printing in LR - poor color reproduction

Photos I print in LR's printing module with a Canon Pixma MP800R and using Canon PP-101 paper and Canon ink, turn out in a kind of brownish/faded color and are totally different from the photos on the screen. I use 'Managed by printer' and 'perceptual'
I noticed that the advise is that "When selecting 'managed by printer' remember to enable color management in the printer driver dialog box". Where do I find this dialog box?
Perhaps not knowing how to enable color management causes the bad color reproduction?
    Thanks for advise!

You need to choose a specific print profile (probably called something like "canon mp800r pr1" - this is what canon calls it's profile for your printer (canon mp800r) and that paper(pr is code for photo paper pro) at highest quality(1) (see the steves digicam link below for further info). This will have been loaded with the printer driver). Select it by picking "other" from the dropdown list of profiles in the print module in lightroom and you should be presented with a list with your profiles in(canon mp800r mp1, canon mp800r pr1 etc). If they are not there, your printer driver may not have been installed properly)
You must then disable the printer profile in the colour/intensity section of the printer settings dialog (press "print settings..." in lighroom then "properties" next to the drop down list with the name of your printer in it. Then select the "manual" radio button in the colour/intensity bit of this dialog and press the set button in the same section of this dialog).
I have found it helpful with some papers to set the print quality manually in the same dialog (select "custom" radio button and then press the "set" button in the same section of the dialog) to high(1) and the halftoning to diffusion.
If you have not already done it, make sure you choose the correct type of paper from the drop down list - for canon papers this will be obvious. For non-canon papers you will need to either look at the package for information or go to the manufacturers website - eg kodak ultima paper and ilford galarie classic pearl recommend the canon photopaper pro setting in my mp600 - this may vary with yours)
Once you have done all this, make sure to save a print preset with the name of the paper so you can easily go back to this combination of settings if you need to in the future. Do this by pressing the "add" button in lightroom when you are in the print module (bottom left of screen) - It is great, lightroom remembers all the settings that you have changed. If you decide these settings are not right for the paper then you can create a new preset or right click on the name of your preset and choose "update with current settings". To me, after using elements for a long time, these presets seem like a real step in a professional direction to help you ensure consistency of quality in printing.
Also, on some papers such as kodak ultima, you have to set the brightness to light in the colour/intensity section also (again this might be different for your printer so chack the paper manufacturers websites) - i figured this one out after spending half an hour digging around the kodak website to find the recommended printer settings. Some companies (eg ilford and kodak for their professional papers) have specific colour profiles for download to colourmatch your printer and paper.
NB - I can offer no guarantees, but this works for me with an MP600 and vista. I am not any sort of expert, just an enthusiastic amateur who spent a long time trying to resolve these issues using a combination of this forum and lots of web serching. I found this article on steves digicams site very helpful:
    http://www.steves-digicams.com/techcorner/June_2005.html
Also lightroom 1.1 is known to have printing colour reproduction problems with vista if you use the "managed by printer" setting - it is in the readme and recommends that specific printer profiles are selected - as I suggest above.
