Poor design features?

I have had a Blackberry Pearl for almost a year now and I'm to the point of throwing it away over several design features even the "techies" where I bought it can't help me with.  I travel quite a bit and when I get off the plane and turn on the phone, I expect the phone to know what time zone I'm in.  Every other phone I have owned had this feature.  So far the only help I've received from the "techies" is to show me how to set it manually.  Duh.  Does anyone know how to set it, so it automatically sets the time?
The other involves turning on the phone.  Simple enough, hit the red, phone-shaped button and Voila!, it's on.  But when it's in my briefcase, and I'm on an airplane, when it's supposed to be off and it happens automatically (through turbulence), and then rings....well, I have had more than one flight attendant get in my face over it.  When I explain, "It's a Blackberry Pearl" they smile.  They say it happens all the time.  Is there any way to set the turn-on feature for multiple key strokes?  That one has the techies stumped as well.
Other than that, the poor camera quality and the trackball's design of sitting higher than the keypad so it activates when placed faced down on any a hard surface...I guess it's only a matter of time before I eat the early termination fee and move on to a better phone.  Any suggestions out there on what phone I should get?
Thanks in advance for any help
Wyldwud

The BlackBerry does NOT automatically update the time zone. You must change it manually. Dumb phones are different than the BlackBerry smartphone. They dont have a calendar that could be potentially be wrong with the auto changing of the time zone. People complain both ways. It would be nice if it was an option that was off by default.
Instead of turning it off, just turn the radio off. This is basically airplane mode. No way it can ring if it cant receive a call. Otherwise you can take the battery out for the duration of the flight.
I have had a Pearl since day 1 when T-Mobile released the original 8100. I have NEVER had the trackball activate anything  when setting face down. Not unless I put something on top of it. If your don't like it then move on. Seems like your just wanting to vent. Every device has is pros and cons. I am sure you will find something you dislike about every device.

  • How to deal with poorly designed code

    Hello, everyone.
I have a problem with some program that I wrote starting my career as a programmer.
At first I studied a lot and wrote this program in java with poor design solutions in mind.
My code looked like procedural(I studied c before) object oriented freak.
And as a result even I could hardly modify my code. I had to spend hours
remembering what each function in class did.
And some time after that my boss asked me to write one new feature which actually changes
architecture a lot. Even if it was good object oriented code, it would take some time. But now
it takes a great amount of struggle and patience to rewrite my ugly code and implement this
    new feature.
So I'm asking you developers out there: How do you deal with such situations when for example
someone wrote very bad piece of code and you have to change/modify it to support new requirements?

Yarrrr, because what's more fun than pouring effort into something to end up with the exact same functionality that you started with?
Finding new and better ways to do things is fun and you definitely improve your coding skills when you go back and pick apart the hack-n-slash stuff you've written before, but overall I don't think it's fun (unless you're truly doing it only for yourself, i.e. no obligations, no deadlines, etc).

Does anyone have a suggestion for an alternative to iCal that will interface with the Cloud so it works on the iPhone and the Macbook? I find iCal to be poorly designed and not very efficient. I waste a lot of time entering information because you can't go to a specific day and enter information, nor can you navigate between months and add information on a specific date by clicking on the date. You can't easily scroll month-to-month and once you do by scrolling through nine months to get to where you want to be, you cannot enter information by clicking on a specific day in the month and entering information. I just called Apple and they verified that this is the way it works. You cannot go to a date and enter information, you keep getting thrown back to today and then you have to go into the calendar and change it manually on the screen. It is just not efficient.

  • PSE 7 - DEsign Feature or Bug?

I wonder if the following is a PSE design feature or is really a bug.<br /><br />- In the Editor I have, say, 3 pictures open.<br />- I finish editing one and close it.<br />- Now the Organizer opens automagically!!!<br />- I would prefer the Editor to remain open, so I now<br />- Grumble and wish the system designers at Adobe certain "things" <G><br /><br />Does anyone have an answer to this?<br />Alexander (grumbled at least four times so far today...)

When a picture is opened in Editor from the Organizer, on closing this picture in editor the focus shifts to Organizer. The Editor does not close in this case just the focus shifts back to Organizer. In my case this does not happen when there are multiple images opened from Organizer and I close one of them. We may be able to help you if you give us the complete workflow which you are following.

  • K7N2-L Poor Design

Could you have put the IDE controllers in a worse place?  First off the IDE cables I got with the motherboard were way to short.  I tried it in 3 cases and there was now way I could connect them to the four ide devices I needed to connect them to.  I rearanged a few things and got 3 of them connected.  I booted up and it would not find my devices.  I got some old IDE cables and everything was found.  I am guessing the IDE cables I recieved were defective but I am not going to go through the mess of trying to return it over some defective IDE cables.  After I got the IDE cables stretched out to the max I start plugging in some PCI devices.  Of course the PCI devices go right over the IDE controllers so I can not fit all my PCI devices in.  Never in my life have I seen such a poor placement of the IDE controlers.  Somone may want to find a better place for them.  I am not impressed with this board so far.  I am installing windows now.  I am hoping the preformance will make up for the poor design.

Lan still not working.  Tried everything I could in the bios and even tried it with different drivers.  I will just use a seperate ethernet card for now.  I am still getting crashes but not as many due to the new drivers from nvidia's site.  I am thinking this will end up on Ebay at the end of the week if I can not get it working the way I want it to.  I have switched in new hardware and nothing is helping.  I used all the hardware on another computer exept for the ram and there were no problems.  I tested the ram via memtest and there were no errors.  I even tested the ram on a VIA KT400 chipset and it ran fine at all clock speeds 266-400.  I just wish I could get a BSOD on a crash so I could get some idea of what is causing the crashes.  There are no standoffs and nothing seems to be shorting the board out.  It is just crashing every few hours.
Actualy Win 98 lite is just a program that works with windows (95, 98, 98se, or ME)  I am using it with 98se.  It lets you remove just about anything that you can not normaly remove from windows.  You can get rid of things such as Explorer, Help Files, or Direct X.  Its a great little program to run on an older computer that you need every little ounce of preformance and space you can get.  I also get less crashes with it but I still get them.

  • CISCO 2125 very poor design or i'm missing something?

CISCO 2125 bad design by Cisco, product development should revise.
I noticed Cisco product sales support staff is pushing 2125 WLAN controller as great WLAN solution. They got me into considering one as something what will work just fine.
I strongly disagree, this product is extremely poor design and it is missing gigabit port for LAN connection.
This product will support 25 APs with its eight 10/100 Mbps ports. Only 6 APs can be linked per port. So for 25 APs you are already using 5 ports. Per manual POE ports 7 & 8 should not be used for anything other than single AP so that leaves you with only 1 port #6 to connect to your LAN.
Yes, that is true, 100Mbps for all the WLAN users on the 25 access points and product is advertised to support high speed N wi-fi capable of doing 300Mbps per user node. What a nonsense? makes no sense even for lightweight use.
Makes you wonder who approved such product for production and what a bad design on the $6K piece of equipment
CISCO please put a Gigabit port on the 2100 series or stop marketing and pushing such poorly designed product

I don't know who you discussed your design with but you were not educated on the use of the product very well. The 2125 is meant to support more than 12 APs in a very light client deployment of 20 or fewer users. If you need more horsepower then you need the 4402-25. This is a reseller issue and not a Cisco design issue. I have deployed over 300 2100 series controllers and the only problem I have is with customer education. See the attached guidelines.

do we have the chance to have a skin design features of a mobile.

Yes. Assuming you are using Flex and Flash Builder, in Flash Builder, create a new MXML Skin.
Right click a directory in your profject (it is a good idea to create a new skins package. They multiply quickly)
Choose a name for the skin
Choose a Host Component for the skin (button, slider, scroller, videoplayer, etc.)
Make sure you "Create As Copy Of" a specific skin class (whether it be the base skin, such as ScrollerSkin, or a skin subclass, such as VScrollBarSkin)
    Create
Add in your own MXML Spark components. You can either use the ones already present in the skin as a base or overwrite them entirely. It's entirely up to you.

  • Poorly designed Yoga 3 Pro keyboard workaround

Several users have been griping about the keyboard of the Yoga 3 Pro. Also certain reviewers have lambasted it (e.g. Gizmodo).
First, the physical side of it is lacking for the typical quality you expect from premium Lenovo laptops (e.g. Thinkpad). The keys do not travel much and it is easy to make mistakes -- I would say my typing errors have increased on the magnitude of 50% versus a X series Thinkpad (pre-chiclet keys).
Second, and the main point of this post, is that several keys are either missing (e.g. Insert) or relegated to Fn key combinations (F1 through to F12, Home and End). Meanwhile, there is AMPLE room for more keys in this form factor. For example on X series Thinkpads, they had keys right up to the edge of the device, and were able to put in a full 2 rows of Ins/Del Home/End PgUp/PgDn, like on a full-sized keyboard.
As a result, typing on this keyboard is a real pain both physically, and in software terms since certain OS functions ask you to press keys that don't exist (e.g. Insert on the pre-boot Bitlocker screen -- sorry no Insert key!). Certain common keyboard commands become awkward now because of needing to add in the extra Fn+ combination (e.g. ALT+F4 to close a program, or F5 to refresh a web page).
But by far one of the most annoying features is co-locating Home with PgUp and End with PgDn, i.e. you need to press Fn+PgUp to get Home. Home/End is a very efficient mechanism in wordprocessing to quickly get to the beginning and end of sentences, beginning and end of cells in Excel when editing formulas, etc. F2 to quickly edit a cell in Excel without clicking the mouse -- now you must use a combination to get to it. If you do frequent word processing, this keyboard will frustrate you as a result.
Meanwhile, Print Screen gets a full key?!? I could see that key as one becoming a Fn combination, since there is no potential for a user to frequently and repeatedly press Print Screen. I seriously wonder if the person/team that designed this layout tested it at all with users "in the field" who actually TYPE.
Anyway, there is a workaround of sorts depending on which keys you prefer to have direct access to. You can remap keys using the Windows registry and something called a Scancode Map.
For example, I myself have noticed that Home/End are more important for me than PgUp/PgDn in terms of quick access, as I do use them extensively for editing documents. So, for example, you can use the registry to remap those keys and switch them around -- that is, Home to PgUp, PgUp to Home, End to PgDn, PgDn to End. So now, when you press the PgUp key, you are actually pressing Home.
If you don't use Caps Lock or Print Screen for example, you can reassign them to other keys you do (e.g. Insert, or any other key actually).
The process is described in the link below, and the author has a specific example of remapping the Home/PgUp, End/PgDn keys:
    http://www.thatsgeeky.com/2010/11/keyboard-annoyances/

I tried that I got some sort of error saying it's not compatible with my system.  I ended up doing a restore, and one by one tracking down which program is needed in order for the system to disable the keyboard and trackpad appropriately.
It ended up being Lenovo Harmony:
    http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/wwha020e.exe
It seems you need Harmony if you'd like them to be disabled in stand, tent, and tablet mode.
    Thanks for the help, anyway.

  • Keyword tags text box poorly designed, crashes PSE 8

I was very interested to see that PSE 8 allows you to enter keyword tags using a text box, as other programs do, promising much faster tagging with large sets of tags.  But the feature has serious bugs rendering it unusable.
After trying the keyword-tags text box for less than a minute on my large catalog with 426 tags, PSE 8 crashed.    Even with a fresh catalog and the default tag categories, it will crash after using the text box about 40 times.   (See below for a recipe.)
Another bug concerns tags with commas in them, e.g. "Truckee, CA" (I have a couple hundred such Place tags).  If you type "Tru" in the text box, select the tag with the mouse, and hit enter, PSE 8 will create two new tags, Truckee and CA, in the Other category, and apply them to the photo.
A design misfeature: After you select and apply a tag with the text box, it loses the keyboard focus.  So to select another tag for the same photo, you have to move your hand to the mouse and click in the text box again.  Partially defeats the whole purpose.
    Recipe for reproducing the bug:
    1. Create a new catalog.
    2. Import 50 photos.
    3. Select the next photo.
    4. In the keyword tag text box, type "p" and then enter.
    5. Go to step 3.
On the 40th or 41st photo, my PSE 8 reliably crashes (Vista 32, 4 GB of memory).   If after step 1 you use the Keyword Tags > + > From File command to load a tag heirarchy of 210 tags (see the attached file), it will crash after just 9 photos.   And with 426 tags, it crashes after 5 photos.
Interestingly, on my Vista 64 system (unsupported by Adobe, 8 core x 2.7 GHz), PSE 8 doesn't crash, but the text box gets unusably slow very quickly.  WIth 210 keyword tags in the catalog, it soon takes about 12 seconds to find a tag after you type a unique prefix.   That time gradually gets longer the more you use the text box.  With 426 tags, it takes almost 20 seconds to apply a tag using the text box.
On both systems, it's clear what the nature of the bug is: Each time you use the text box, the process's memory grows by many megabytes.  I believe my Vista 64 system doesn't crash (at least not immediately) because it provides 3.5 GB of memory for use by PSE 8, while Vista 32 only provides about 1.5 GB.
    I'm getting a sinking feelilng...

Is the white triangle to the left of "Keyword Tags" pointing down or pointing to the right?  See this screen shot:
Click on the white triangle -- does that make a difference?
If not, try deleting the Organizer's preferences:

    Hi,
I'm looking for an iPhoto card design that is featured on the following page:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto/printproducts.html
It is the red card with pictures inside the ornaments. I have iPhoto version 6.06 and it is not part of the available themes and designs. If anyone can direct me to where I can find this design, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks in advance.

I have it in my iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.1) card library
You are posting in the iPhoto '08 forum - maybe this is reason to upgrade to iLife '08 -- or post the question in the iPhoto 06 forum, you are much more likely to get help on version 6 in the version 6 forum

  • Documentation to master Query Designer Features

Hello colleges. I would like to know if anyone has found a comprehensive documentation in the use of the Query Designer, specially in those features who seems to help you calculate an use cumulative, counters, contributions, totals, ranking use, etc. I'm trying to build a SKU Velocity analysis and it seems it can only be solved with those functions mentioned above.
    kindly regards,

I haven't been able to find a solution to this.  It was easy enough in 3.5x to add a document to a query.
Can anyone from SAP comment on this at all?

  • Has the latest version of Pages lost graphic design features?

Since downloading the latest version of Pages on my Mac, I have become rather frustrated with the lack of design/layout capabilities.
The previous version of Pages gave the option of design and word processing.  Now, if I wish to design on a blank page, my graphics are
limited, the text wrap is a pain, and I don't feel that there's the freedom I once had to manipulate graphics and text together.
Has anyone else experienced this frustration?  Is there a tutorial that I can watch to bring me up to date?

I do most of my work on my Mac, but occasionally would use an iPad to show someone a document. I no longer open any important documents with my iPad because once I do, the document is converted to the new file format for Pages 5.0 and the file is messed up. For example, linked text boxes are no longer linked. Even if I then export the file back to Pages 09, the text boxes are no longer link-able. The little link buttons are gone from the text box. The only way to get the link feature back is by inserting a new text box and then copying and pasting to the new box. Frustrating to say the least!
    Send Apple feedback here.
