Poor display on retina display

I just received my new MacBook pro w/Retina display.  Generally, things are great. Strangely the much more complex FCPX displays amazingly well on the new macbook pro while in Pages and Numbers I get the same pixelated results as a third party app like Filemaker.  I thought all the Apple apps were updated to display beautifully on retina--Mail & Calendar do as well.  I've run software update and updated via the App Store; but the display is poor.  I've also gone into display settings and confirmed they are at optimal settings.
Any fixes?  Has Apple truly not updated these yet?
Thanks for any help,
Greg

I believe you need to get info on the individual iWork apps & select something along the line of "open in low resolution."
We've all been waiting a very long time for updates/upgrades to the iWork apps. The last update was a year ago to take advantage of autosave & versions in Lion. Maybe something will happen around the time Mountain Lion is released sometime this month, but I'm not holding my breath.

    Hi all,
Anyone have the poor display quality webcam from ThinkPad E440?
This is the first timeI bought a Lenovo product: a ThinkPad E440 with i7 cpu few days ago (I am currently using ASUS UX31). Everything is great except that the webcam have extremely poor quality:
    1. When I use the camera application, the photo is grainy with extremely poor resolution
    2. The video chat at night not just very poor in resolution, it actually turn into Black & White at night, in the morning it have color but still extremely poor display quality. Attached photo is taken around evening, no color was detected, all in black and white......is that the normal quality from ThinkPad E440?
I have updated all my drivers again and again.
I am not sure if it is a defect or it is buid to be that poor? How can I troubleshoot before send for repair?
    Product model: 20C5CTO1WW
The webcam is intergrated camera HD720p
The video card is Intel(R) HD Graphic 4600
    Please Help! Thanks.

  • T500 - poor display quality

I have T500 with WXGA TFT LED Backlight and integrated Intel graphics and I'm very disappointed with it. This LCD
presents very poor quality in terms of viewing angles (not only vertical but also horizontal), colors (they are somehow
    washed-out, not saturated) and contrast.
Does anyone know if it is possible to replace this display with WSXGA+ TFT CCFL Backlight or WXGA TFT CCFL Backlight.
    Will they give better results?

If you would like ThinkPads with better displays, might I suggest that you please take the survey?
    Thanks!

  • Macbook air poor display of amazon

why is Amazon.com coming up with lousy display... graphics missing, old font text.  Why this site only?

Try the browser issue basics - clear history, cookies and cache. Close and re-open. If that doesn't do anything, try a different browser - Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Opera are a few options.

  • Poor displayed image resolution?

I've just started using FormsCentral I've inserted an image created in PhotoShop and saved both as a jpg (600dpi) and as a png. But the displayed image resolution (in FormsCentral preview) for either format is terrible. What have I done wrong?

If the space the image is placed in is smaller then the image size then our servers scale it down to fit. The best thing to do is make sure the image is not wider than the page and not taller than the space. Also save it at a lower web dpi so we don't reprocess it on the server.
    Hope that works for you.

  • Poor display refresh rate during playback

When I say "display refresh rate" I'm talking about the various toolbars,  level meter and the clock.  I'm not talking about the time coding like in frames  of a video clip vs. minutes/seconds/decimal but how fast those toolbars visually  refresh their information.  In Cool Edit Pro 2.1 they were real-time.  Level  meter and clock would refresh at the max speed of 61 frames per second (limited  by monitor).  However Audition refreshes at what I am guessing is around 12-15  FPS.  The level meter is like watching stop motion animation and the clock skips  along by fractions of a second instead of a smooth continuous spin.  That rate  makes the whole program appear sluggish and the level meter bars do not peak,  just the resulting tic mark appears.  The sound is fine and uninterrupted.
It is not a hardware issue.  This is primarily a gaming rig  (Nvidia 280 GTX, X-FI Fata1ity, Intel Quad core, 4GBs RAM, Vista 64x, etc.).  I do  audio editing as a side job.  I've used versions of Cool Edit Pro for nearly a  decade on many machines including this one and I want to upgrade to a  multi-core/multi-thread version to make editing faster.  Is there a setting  somewhere to set faster display refresh rates?

I don't think so. That would be the setting that replaces any form of Vista with XP, I suspect, and M$ thoughtlessly didn't add that... but you could try turning off every single service that isn't needed, and try unplugging any form of networking connection - the polling these do can screw the response of your entire system. That's why dedicated DAWs are built - to get around all of the throttling that your average or gaming PC does. Look for an app like EndItAll, and run it before processing audio. No, I don't know why it happens, but there have been problems with video displays almost forever with CEP/Audition - simply because as an app, it doesn't prioritise video.

  • Poor Display Quality

I've got two MSI Wind PC 100. Between the two, I've tried XP, Windows 7, and Ubuntu with several different flat panel displays. And yes, I did download the drivers. I thought XP would be my salvation as it actually has a display driver specifically for it. Hell no.
The main thing is the image 'jiggles' when either the hard drive or CD spin up. Also, if I click on an empty space on the display, it sends out little ripples.
I thought by replacing the whole unit and regressing from W7 to XP (debatable) I would get rid of this issue. No. I've not seen anybody else report this problem, but it continues to dog me.
Pardon me for the rant, but you can understand my frustration. I'm a software consultant, and pretty handy with this stuff, and never seen this before. Did I manage to get the two bad apples out of the bunch?
If any of this sounds familiar, I've posted on this topic before. Help. Please. The computer is just so damned cute and works so well, but the display is really unacceptable.

My apologies on the faux pas.
It is a MSI Wind PC Intel 945GC with

One variable that just occurred to me is to try a different VGA cable. We use all Dells here, so all our cables are Dell. I ordered a Belkin VGA cable.

  • Bridge thumbnail poorly displays PS text layer

In Bridge, even with High Quality thumbnails preview set, Photoshop Text Layers (non rasterized) preview horribly.
I would like to use the Bridge thumbnail (in a large Preview Panel) as a slide for a PS presentation; and would prefer not to open the PS file for every text slide. The PS images without text are fine.
In order to make changes to the text, I would prefer not to rasterize the text layers, but will if necessary just prior to presentation.
Is there a setting that I might have missed with the font? Specific size? Type? I tried purging the cache for the folder. Or, a Bridge Pref? These files are .psd, and look fine when opened in PS.
I just tried rasterizing, the text layers, and they still look bad. Even flattening the layers give no improvement. What am I missing?
    Thanks,
    Sonny
    Mac OS 10.5.4
    Bridge 2.1.1.9

    Hi Omke, thanks for helping.
I just noticed something very interesting. The Preview quality is perfect if I drag the Preview pane to one size. I had it maximum so as to project larger. As a matter, of fact, there is only one size for the pane. If I drag it slightly larger or smaller, the text breaks down!!!
But my large PS images render fine previews at all pane sizes.
    Does this help?
I will reset the Bridge prefs. I am putting off 10.5.5 until I finish this presentation. If I can get Bridge to render text "slides", then I will do the whole presentation in Bridge Preview, and open images in PS when necessary. That avoids switching to Powerpoint or Keynote. I did this last year, and don't remember any problems using Bridge Preview.
I have a Mac Pro. The setting in Bridge is for Software Rendering, unchecked.

  • T400 poor display contrast

    Hello!
Yesterday I buy T400 in online store and I was unpleasantly surprised by quality of picture. Contrast is very low and I can't make it look better. I've try verious technics of calibration, but that's all no use.
Is it normal for that model? Model is not so cheap, but it look likes. Is there any color schemes maybe? Or another solution of that problem?
    P.S. Sorry for my engish.

    Hi,
I do not have the ultimate solution but maybe some hints:
First make sure you have turned your brightness up.
Then the question is what your expectations are. Maybe you should go to a lenovo shop and compare your model against one in the show room.
If the picture is the same you expect too much ;-)
otherwise it seems you unluckily bought a defect notebook and have to send it in for repair. As far as I can tell there is no software/calibration solution: either a monitor works or it does not.

  • Why does PE11 have poor resolution on Retina screens?

On my Macbook Pro Retina photographs that look stunning viewed in Preview, PhotoMechanic or iPhoto are all pixellated and blurred when viewed in Photoshop Elements 11. Anyone know of an answer to this?

That's actually not quite the reason. 1024 x 768 is the minimum resolution for all the features to fit on your screen. You can run PSE at a much higher resolution (my monitor is 1920 x 1200 for example, and PSE looks fine). However, the retina display packs in a lot more pixels than that and programs must get new graphics to look optimized on those screens. Even photoshop didn't till fairly recently.
You can try viewing photos at 50 or 100% for best results, but any current version of PSE, like many other programs, is going to be like watching standard def TV on an HDTV. Since PS CS6 was the first version of PS to have an update that optimized it for retina displays, I would not expect PSE to be until there is a version of PSE based on CS6 or higher. PSE 11 is based on CS5.

  • Powerbook G4 12 " display is low res and faint

    Dear Gurus of such things,
My Powerbook G4 12" display goes into some kind of low res and faint display after restarting. After days of this, it will suddenly become high res and clear again, for no reason that I can tell. It also recovers after my Powerbook has been connected to a projector.
Is there some way to fix this poor display after restarting without connecting it to a projector?
    Thanks Scotianova

Why not ask Applecare to replace the whole laptop ?
by the way,is your MBP a Core or Core 2 Duo?
I am currently using a Core 2 Duo MBP, it's working well(except for a defective battery )but i am happy with it.

  • IMac vs. MBP Display: Better for Photo Editing?

I have been considering getting a new iMac, and I would like to do photo editing (somewhere in the middle between professional and iPhoto). First I thought 20", but then I learned about the relatively poorer display quality. Then I thought 24", but still had concerns about gradients. Then I waited for the new (Penryn) iMacs, but it sounds like there hasn't been an obvious improvement in iMac display quality.
Would a MacBook Pro be a better bet? Would anyone care to give their opinion of the display pros/cons of using a MBP vs. a current iMac.
    Thanks in advance.

Well, they both have their pros and cons IMO. The MBPs usually have more even backlighting but the color representation on the iMac is much better to my eyes.
To be honest, the gradient and yellow tint on the iMac doesn't disturb me much when editing photos (but it does for most other task). The screen is a bit too bright though which can result in you pictures becoming too dark when viewed elsewhere or printed.
If you are serious about photo editing I'd suggest the 15" MBP or perhaps even a Mac Mini (depending on your harware needs) and an external display (there are some fairly cheap ones that are better than both the MBP and iMac displays when it comes to photo editing).

  • New Macbooks: How is the display?

I was wondering, how is the display of the new Macbooks in comparison to the older model? How is the viewing angle? Is there any change? I really do hope that the viewing angle is better than in the previous model. That would be an upgrade reason for me.

I just received one of the new Macbooks and I think the viewing angle is terrible. Everything else about this great little computer is just superb, but the display is truly awful. There is no position I can put the screen in where the whole thing looks good at once. Tilt it a little forward and the screen gets progressively more "washed out" as you look from top to bottom, (but my image position looks good in the iSight camera). Tilt the screen just a little further back and the image contrast and saturation improves at the bottom, but the top of the screen gets dark. Also, in this position, my image is at the bottom of the frame when using the iSight camera. There is simply no happy medium where the screen looks decent from top to bottom. The horizontal viewing angle is not good either, but this is not so troublesome as the lack of an acceptable vertical viewing angle. There is also a good amount of (what I assume is) backlight leakage at the bottom of the screen. With a darkish image filling the screen, perhaps when watching a DVD for example, the bottom quarter or so of the image will be lighter than the rest, getting worse nearer the bottom edge of the screen. (I also have an OLD Dell laptop, and it has the same viewing angle issues, but not the light leakage. But c'mon, it's an OLD dell laptop, not a brand spankin' new Macbook!)
I am still debating whether to return this Macbook for a refund. I don't think my unit is defective; I think they're all like this from what I've read on the web. The only thing standing in my way is that I like the rest of the computer SO MUCH, I am almost willing to put up with the poor display!

  • Can I upgrade my display to get a just brilliant notebook?

I understand near everyone is disappointed about the quality of displays built on most T500 .... no brillance no nothing ...... I see there are some shops selling spare parts and displays that would fit into a T500 for small money ....... Can I use them for upgrading my T500 ..... are they same quality than ones built in (all came from one factory?) ..... how do you deal with that poor display ???? Regards

Then contact AppleCare. Usually there is no exchange for refurbs, but you can ask.

The quick answer depends upon the quality of work you intend to do:
    1) Are you a general amateur photographer? As long as you perform your own color calibration of the display, and NOT use the dull color profiles Apple provide, you're fine.
    2) If you are a PROFESSIONAL performing color management on your images then the answer for BOTH the MacBook and MacBook Pro are NO. You are kidding yourself if you think you will ever get full accurate colors on their LCD displays.
All of Apple's LCD laptop displays have, up to this point, been only 6 bit color capable. A professional requires full 24 bit color, which is what the human eye is capable of seeing, which requires an 8 bit color capable display.
Note: 6 bit color = 262,144 colors. (It was incorrectly listed above). 8 bit color = 16,777,216 colors. This is a drastic difference. Apple use an FRC dithering method to fake the other colors, but this by no means equals real 'millions of colors' depth.
Do not use an iMac as the same 6-bit color depth remains the case. You must use either a VERIFIED 8-bit LCD display (note- one of the Apple Cinema Displays is ONLY 6-bit, so buyer beware), or use a CRT. The CRT still provides more colors than any LCD display, AND you don't have to worry about the viewing angle problem that plagues most LCD displays. (Shift your head up or down, right or left and you will see the contrast and color quality of lower quality LCD displays change. This ruins them for professional use).
