Poor DV capture quality

I just switched over from a Windows/PC to a Mac and love it. However, I am having problems with capturing video off a Sony TRV310 DV camcorder. The digital video (going through the 400 firewire port) doesn't look too bad in the preview window, but going full screen using iMovie, QuickTime (on the Mac AND on the PC) the video quality is absolutely terrible. Pixilated, low res...unacceptable. The video captured from the firewire port on the PC looks fine, but the audio has 1/4-1/2 second clips taken out of it...a problem with my PC/Windows machine. That's one of the reasons I got a Mac so I could do better captures.
Any ideas on what I am doing wrong, what needs to be configured?
Thanks.
Matt

You should use the head cleaner every 100 hrs. or so and ideally you would take it in once every few years to get a professional cleaning, depending on the camera.
There's also cleaning of the lenses and light dusting of the camera body every week or so, depending on how often you shoot. Make sure you use a microfiber cloth that's safe for use on camera lenses, since other subtly-abrasive cloths that may appear to be acceptable may scratch and subsequently damage the lens.
Start out with a head Cleaner. The ones that look like a tape that you play in the camera for a few seconds. That'll probably fix your problem in the future. It it doesn't you might want to think about sending the camera in to be cleaned.
For now "capture now" using the non-controllable device setting to avoid any errors
Hey Jim, was this the kid you were talking about?

I have a Celeron 1.7, 20 and 60 gig hd at 7200 rpm, 512M of ram. My capture is of very poor quality. I have used the MSI software and also Virtual Dub. Still poor video capture quality. Anyone tell me what I can do or how to do this right?

If you use a compressing codec in real time, you need lotsa CPU.
Try using a lossless codec such as Huffyuv (you'll need lotsa disk) for the real time capture and then compress afterwards.

  • Capture quality

can somebody please help i recently bought a macbook pro 17" with 2gb of ram and final cut studio. for whatever reason when i capture into final cut and into i movie the capture quality is terrible. i am in a pal region and have tried every setting there is, a friend who works in special fx could not sort out this problem. if anybody has any idea it would be greatly appreciated i have tried different tapes and different capture devices so i am maybe thinking it could be a hardware proble, i dont know but i am seriously lost with the whole situation.

Well, that is very unusual. As far as I know, when DV comes across a Firewire interface into a computer, it is not touched at all. In other words, whatever is the encoding quality of the original should show up at the same quality level on the computer. There is no "generation" loss to this transfer. Here are some things I would check:
    - Does the video look good played directly off the camera to a TV monitor? That would confirm that it is recording properly. If it looks bad right off the camera, without the Mac even being involved, then you need to figure out why the camera is capturing poorly. But it sounds like you have already done this.
    - What are the file sizes like when importing the video from the camera to the Mac over the FW interface? The files should be quite large. It should take about 200 MBytes of disk for every minute of video, so about a gigabyte for five minutes of video. If the files are a lot smaller than that, then that would mean a format translation and compression of some form is taking place during the import, even though that should not be happening. There should be no codec involved during the import stage. The DV should be coming straight across. It is put in a QuickTime wrapper of some kind, but that shouldn't make it any smaller or degrade the quality at all. So check the file size.
    - Could it be that you don't have Intel-native versions of the applications involved? If FCP or iMovie are running as PowerPC applications under the Rosetta emulator, maybe that is where the problem lies. Not sure but something to consider. Good luck.

    Jon,
What Julianne said at first about re-linking made perfect sense and I followed it easily, had actually already been there.  But in my situation now, it didn't have any effect.  The directory of folders which had already been added were still just as they were, and the outstanding balance are not in the desired position.  And the folders which had been brought in earlier today when I clicked "synchronize folder", were still missing all the metadata.
Maybe this means I need to start over, and I'm fine about doing that that, but I don't know what it takes to accomplish that.  I'm concerned now that any changes I make out of guesswork could only make the problem harder to resolve.  It just feels to me like something I did at the beginning just wasn't right, and now it's a tangle.
    Can you advise?
    Thanks,
    Gary

  • I want to capture quality cost, how can I do it?

What all are the basic settings I should  do to capture quality cost during inspection. I mean through activity confirmation.
Control key- I activated milestone confirmation required in SPRO setting for QM02. Is anything else I need to do?
Work center- could anyone help me what exactly I need to do for confirming activity during result recording.
What is the formula need to be maintained in a step by step manner.

    Hi,
You can use transaction CRQ1. Enter the plant, work center description & work center category (machine, labour) at initial screen. In the basic data tab, enter short text, person responsible, usage, standard value key. In default value key, enter control key, standard value key for set-up, machine & labour parameters. In the capacity, enter capacity category. In the scheduling category (labour, machine), capacity planner group, basic unit of measure, start time, finish time, break lengths, overload capacity, capacity utilization, no. of work centers. In costing, enter the cost center on which the costs of the work center will be adopted (for example QA department) & activity types for each activity of setup, labour & machine, in formula, enter the formula to calculate costs (for example - setup time formula for setup activity). In technical data enter, machine type, sort string, planner group. Then save the work center data. Then enter the costing data for the activity types in transaction KP26 for the cost center selected.
Assign this work center in the inspection plan operation, where you want to capture the cost. Use control key as QM04, which requires confirmation.
When you confirm the activity of inspection operation in transaction QE51N for result recording, then while saving system asks you to confirm the time required for each operation. System will calculate the costs & assign those on cost center.

  • MiniDV Capture Quality

Does footage look the same from:
    *a $2500 3CCD Sony/Cannon
    *a $1500 miniDV capture deck
*an old $200 Panasonic home video camera?
Basically I am asking if capture quality changes depending on what is being used?
    Thanks.

Of course not. If all MiniDV cameras captured exactly the same image, nobody would buy an expensive camera over a cheaper one, and there wouldn't be the hundreds of models there are out there. They are all the same resolution, but resolution is only a small part of the image quality equation.
    a $1500 miniDV capture deck
Decks don't capture footage, they just play it back. So however good or bad the footage from a MiniDV tape is, that's how good or bad you'll get it from the deck.

  • Capturing Video with FX-5900XT - Poor Quality of Image - How to improve the capture quality ?

    Hello all,
I would to know what is the best sofware to use when you want to capture Video ?
I used MS Movie Maker, and WinDvd Creator but I didn't like very much of the result, the video had noise, the color and the image definition was not good, is there any way to improve it ?
I am using the last drivers from Nvidia. I generated videos in AVI format and MPEG 2.
I have old videos from my JVC VHS, my connection between my cam and the video board is a RCA Cable. When I see the video in my VCR is good but the digital result was not good.
Is there any software filter ?
Is there any tutorial or White Paper about capture using Nvidia driver ?
    Thanks all for your help,
    Regards,

    I can't see a relation between a hardcopy and a analogic movie digitalization ?
    Could you explain me ?
In any case the quality of the image is very good in a hardcopy.
Does the Nvidia Capture Drive have some adjust ? Sensibility ? Noise ? Color ? Sharpness ?

  • Video capture quality loss

I am having a major problem with video capture resulting in poor quality playback. I am capturing from a canon HV20 into an firewire 400 500 Gig hard drive. I am getting vertical distortion on the capture. When I look at the camera screen or output to a TV, everything is sharp.
My question is what would be causing this? Do you think that eSATA would solve it? I am waiting on my new eSATA card to arrive in the mail, and that will be hooked up to the external.

    Hi T-Frangoo-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards
This is exactly how I do it. I use a cheap Canon camera as a playback deck so as to save wear and tear on the ol' XL2.

  • Getting poor still image quality in SD project on CS4

hey guys. sorry if you heard this one, but i havent seen anything addressing this.
i am using CS4 to edit a Standard def project and i am running into a problem with still images being choppy and distorted.
I tried all options to produce a better quality, but i get poor quality in the timeline monitor even after i render preview. the ouput
when i export is equally bad.
what i did find out was that if i switched projects in favor of an HD 720 the images are crisp on import and look good.
am i missing something. i assumed the images looked bad because they werent rendered and since i didnt need to render to edit i didnt want to lose the time, so now i'm stuck with those images, or i have to scrap the project and start again in hd and i prefer not to. i would have done it in hd, but the footage i was given was SD. anyways i would appreciate some help. thanks!
btw i've tried to export in both MS DV and WMV
i have tried importing psd png and jpg i have used all these in the past in pro2 with no problem

still images being choppy and distorted.
    Can we see a sample?

  • IMovie capture quality better than anything FCP can offer for consumer DV?

As a newbie to FCP, I have not found Capture, sequence, and export settings that is equal to or better than what iMovie 08 can create. Prior to this, I've been using iMovie 08 which is extremely user friendly. Just plug in the fire wire connections and it auto detects only one setting for DV. I am not sure what format it captures in but it does a good job. When I export out of iMovie 08 I use "using Quicktime" and choose the Uncompressed 8-bit NTSC method. The result is a decent, non-interlaced looking .mov file.
The first time I tried to capture with FCP I chose the easy setup, where I would capture in the NTSC DV, sequence would be NTSC DV and export using the current settings in quicktime. The result was an interlaced and lowered quality vid.
I have also tried the following combinations with no success with quality comparisons w/ iMovie 08:
capt: NTSC dv, seq: NTSC DV, progressive exp: Uncompressed 8-bit
capt: Uncompressed 8-bit, seq: Uncompressed 8-Bit exp: Uncompressed 8-bit
This last one came close, but still iMovie 08 was better.
My assumption is that FCP would contain the settings to duplicate or even out perform iMovie's export quality for consumer video dv. I viewed iMovie as little brother and FCP as big brother. Shouldn't FCP produce equal to or better quality than iMovie 08? And what are the settings for this?
    Thanks

Thank you for clearing up my confusion. How is my export from iMovie 08, using "Uncompressed 8-bit" coming out progressive (I see no interlaced, odd/even scan lines)? Is this export dropping lines/information? If so, uncompressed is not an appropriate name for the export.
I understand what you are saying about "getting quality back" on export. My initial question was comparing the quality of an iMovie 08 export vs. FCP export and having the problem of a lowered output from the FCP export.
If anyone has the time, would they try a short experiment:
    1. From your DV source, camera or deck connect to your computer
Capture a short clip via iMovie 08 a short clip in standard 4:3.
Export using Quicktime, Uncompressed 8-bit setting
    2. From your DV source, camera or deck, connect to your computer.
Capture the same short clip to FCP using Easy set up for NTSC DV. Export with current settings.
    3. Compare the two.

  • Poor still image quality in Premiere Pro

Hi, I am new to Premiere Pro. A couple of weeks ago I made 2 slide shows using still pictures from a school trip to Washington DC. I added .m4a audio files and they look great. Today I made 3 more slide shows, same sources, but the picture quality isn't there. It seems I must have changed something? The quality of the pictures varies, as they come from different cameras, but when I have a high quality picture - for example 5 MB - that looks great in Windows Photo Viewer, it still looks bad in Premiere Pro. I'm using Fit and Full, pictures look bad in the smaller window and when viewed full screen. This is before any exporting.
It occurs to me that I didn't know about rendering until I watched a tutorial, now when I make changes I hit enter to render. Could that have anything to do with it? I see my Arlington video isn't rendered now (shows red sections), and it's one of the ones that looks good.
Typically when I create a project I choose Frames for Display Format and HDV for Capture Format. I don't see any differences between the old and new projects.
I'm supposed to hand out DVDs at school tomorrow, it's the last day so I need help! Thanks

The list is valid if you save the file in square pixels.
However, I believe there is an easier way if one has
    Photoshop.
In Photosohop, you can change the image pixel
aspect ratio directly.  The drop down for that parameter lists common video formats.
Change the PAR first (e.g., 1.33)  and then, using the crop tool set for the frame dimensions, e.g., 1440 x 1080.  Save the file.  Premiere will recognize the image format.  There's no reason to keep track of what the square pixel frame size is.
You can create Photoshop Actions to somewaht automate this process.

  • Poor iChat audio quality

When my friend and I use FaceTime on our Macs the sound quality is pretty good, but when we video chat on iChat the sound quality is pretty poor, muffled. We've tried limiting bandwidth and stuff but that didn't help, any ideas? Also, when just using audio chat, the sound is much better

    Hi,
iChat takes the setting from System Preferences > Sound > Input as the volume you send to your Buddy.
Ideally this needs to move the Blue response bar to at least Half Way (preferably 3/4s) but not bang in to the right hand end.

  • Poor Rendered Video Quality PE7

    Hi All,
I've been running the trial of PE7 for a few weeks comparing against my existing copy of Pinnacle 10 and trial of Power Director. I love the interface and edit abilities, however when I generate DVD files and view them the result from PE7 is of a much lower quality than from Pinnacle or Power Director.
I'm using the default quality settings in each of the programs and viewing all with the same DVD viewing software (AVS Player). The originating AVI that was edited was captured using Pinnacle, but I imported it into PE7 and rendered a PE7 DV AVI for editing to make sure I was working with PE defaults. The picture seems to be more grainy and less vibrant in color with PE7. Of course having the big black "PE7 Trial" directly across the middle of the screen doesn't help with comparison (what possessed them to put the watermark directly across the focal point of the viewfinder?), but I'm pretty certain the PE7 files are not as good.
Is there some setting that I'm missing that would make the video from PE7 that much worse than the other two products? I can't believe that the Adobe product would be that much worse without someting I'm doing wrong or missing.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
    Dale

    Dale,
The test of each program would be to author a DVD (use RW, so you don't spend a bunch of $ on test DVD's) and then watch that through a DVD software player on the computer, or on a set-top player to TV.
As for the display in the programs, there are a couple of things to look at. In PE, if your DV AVI Clip shows a green line, above the Timeline, it does not require Rendering. If it's red, just hit Enter, to Render it. If you Rt-click on the Display Monitor, you can choose Fit, or one of several resolutions - choose 100% and see if your display improves. Fit is basically a "draft preview," sized to fill the Display Monitor, where 100% should show the actual detail.
It's been a long time, and several versions ago, since I last used Pinnacle, but I was less than impressed by its "monitor" back then. However, I am going both from memory and also this was on a previous laptop. Though it also had a 17" monitor, the rez was way down (totally different GPU), than what I am now using.
I have Power Director on my workstation (dual 21" CRT Hitachi 915's), and I see no difference between it's display, and that in P-Pro2, when I switch it to 100%. They both look the same to me. Do not have PE on the workstation, and do not have Power Director on the laptop, so I cannot compare those in an A-B situation.
Going back a couple of versions of P-Pro, Adobe went from DirectShow display to a common display engine for all of their programs. It has been my experience, when setup to 100%, that their displays are equal to, or better than, any program using DirectShow. This is for footage that does not need to be Rendered, or that has been Rendered, and is for 100%, and not Fit. I do not know if Pinnacel and Cyberlink still use DirectShow.
One last item to consider is the display settings on your monitor. Because Adobe does not use DirectShow any more, you could have differences there. I'd spend just a bit of time with the settings on your monitor, both in the Windows' Display, and in your GPU's utilities, to see if you can "calibrate" your monitor for best viewing of the Adobe display engine. In my nVidia Quadro 4500FX control panel, I have one setting for "Print Work," and one for "Video," and my needs fluctuate between the two. I also use Adobe Photoshop's Adobe Gamma utility to set things up for my print work. It is no longer included in the latest CS3-CS4 Photoshop.
