Poor DVD quality; commercial help?

I can't get my 17-minute FCE film to export to DVD without major quality loss. I export to QT, it looks OK on the computer, but burn to DVD via iDVD, and both audio and video quality are bad.  Have scoured these forums, tried umpteen different settings.  I give up.  Are there any commercial entities/persons to whom I can send my FCE file (or .mov file) and they do it for me?

Tell us exactly how you are exporting from FCE.   To QuickTime Movie?  Or QuickTime Conversion?   (If you are exporting for the purpose of burning a DVD, you should only export to QT Movie, never QT Conversion.)
What versions of FCE & iDVD are you using, and are you really running OS X 10.4.11 as indicated in your profile?
What are your FCE sequence settings (frame size, vid rate & compressor)?  Ditto for at least one of the clips in your sequence?

  • Poor DVD Quality Help!!!

I create great looking sequences in Avid Xpress Pro. I export them as Quicktime Reference Movies (which look great playing back from the desktop). When I use these Quicktimes in iDVD and burn a disc, the playback quality of the movies is drastically reduced (squiggly lines whenever there's movement). My encoding preferences are set to "professional". How can I get good looking DVD's with iDVD? Also, is there a stand alone DVD Authoring program that can handle Mpeg-2?
    Thanks

is there a stand alone DVD Authoring program that can handle Mpeg-2?
Yes, DVDSP can do this. And I believe Roxio Toast can as well.

  • Poor DVD quality

When I burn a DVD in Premiere Elements 11, the quality of the DVD is poor. The preview file looks great. The project is a mixture of SD video, HD pics and audio.
    What am I doing wrong?

  • Poor DVD Quality when exporting to DVD

I have an HD timeline with XDCam footage 1080i.  I have been trying to export to DVD and everytime I export I get poor quality video.  The image shows distortion and pixelation.  My client is not very happy with the final product and I'm just running out of asnwers.  I have tried exporting using Dynamic Link, Media Encoder and I get exactly the same result.  I have tried exporting the first 15 min with same results. Jagged edges, etc.
I just upgraded to CS5 from CS4 hoping to resolve the problem and I get the same result.  I only have the problem while exporting to DVD in MPEG format.  Blu-Ray format works great.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Ann
Here are the specs of my PC.
         Dell Workstation T7500
         12Gb RAM
Quad Core Xeon E5520 2.27 CPUs
         Vista 64Bit OS
Terrabytes and Terrabytes of RAID storage.  Too many to mention.
I can edit HD content in real time and works great the only issue I'm having at this point is just Encoding HD to SD.  The encoding is normally done fairly fast, except for HD wich takes almost a whole day to encode when delivered in HD. Right now is taking longer because I'm trying to go from interlaced to progressive I guess.
    Question regarding your settings.
My settings are different than yours on:
         Quality = 5
Field Order = Lower (Could this be the problem?)
    Thanks

  • Poor dvd quality in idvd 09 avchd

My cam is Sony sr12e which is avchd format, when I edit in iMovie 09, it is fine, and I export it using AIC code with as quicktime mov(since many suggested here that it is better than directly share the mov to idvd). Then drag it to idvd but the quality is still poor. The resulting movie looks like water is pouring down walls and people in still shots mouths move as if they were taking. Lots of movement in horizontal lines. Anyway to solve the problem, I can't believe all mac users are experiencing this terrible bug made by Apple.

I can't believe all mac users are experiencing this terrible bug made by Apple.
    It's no bug.
iMovie 09 is a wonderful program assuming that you're using it for what it was designed to do, assemble simple videos to share on the Internet.
I did a compare one day using the same clip burned to DVD from iMovie 06 and from iMovie '09.
The iMovie 06 clip looked like it came from the camera directly and the iMovie 09 clip looked worse. The difference is the single field processing used by iMovie 09 and the fact that it throws out every other horizontal line.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09 is a "lossless" combination and my DVD's look perfect!

  • Why Poor DVD quality Encore CS6 with Sony FS100 MTS files from PPro CS6

I am using PPro CS6 on a MAC Pro Quad zenon with Boot Camp. On PC side I was using PPro CS6 & Encore CS6 with MTS files from  Sony NX 5U with NO Problems.
I just started using a Sony FS100 recording 1080i (60) format MTS files. When I Dynamic Link to Encore, the quality of the image is very soft compare to image from previous
projects with MTS files from Sony NX 5U.When I open a previous NX5U project, it still displays and creates an excellant dvd.Need help in solving problem.

Thanks for the advice. I tryed your method with same results.
I then tried changing project quality settings with somewhat better results
    but not good enough results.
I looked at some of my previous dvds that used mts files from my Sony NX5U
and the quality was much better
that any results I am having using the Sony FS100 mts files. Even still
pictures do not look good now in Encore.
I then tried using Roxio Creator 10 Pro to make a dvd.
The results were excellant! Video files and stills are great.
I noticed that Encore CS6 is using the "Main Concept" codec to transcode.
Has something changed in the basic
settings with my Encore and can I reset my Encore to original defaults???
Any advice would be welcomed...Thanks again.

  • Poor DVD Quality for slide shows from quicktime

I have generated a slide show in QT and the quality is great. When I try to generate a DVD the quality drops significantly (very disappointing). How do I generate highest quality DVDs especially for slideshows.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should take all your JPEGs and turn them into 720 x 480, then import them into a program like Final Cut Pro.
Put them all in the timeline.
Add sound or whatever, fades, etc.
Then export it out as a QT Movie, File>Quicktime Movie
Then add this to Compressor or DVD SP.
If you just add a .mov to DVD SP, your bitrates need to be set in the preferences.
DVD Studio Pro > Preferences > Encoding
Try 7.0 average, 7.4 high, 2 Pass VBR, Best
Sometimes fades on photos get messed up with lower bitrates.
    7.0 is decent.
Set Compressor up with those settings as well if you are using Compressor.
If you just drag photos into DVD SP, you can do it that way as well, just be sure your preferences for your bitrate is higher.
What you had was pretty low.
Let us know how it goes.

  • Schoolboy error - poor DVD quality from movie created under iSight

I have mistakenly created a movie using 'iSight' settings when first opening the project
Having now spend 10's of hours editing this piece of work, and burnt to DVD via iDVD, the resulting quality on DVD is horrible - lots of video separation.....which makes a mockery of having bought a High definition camera in the first pleace.
Can anyone offer any advice on how to switch the 'iSight' settings or how to improve the burn quality? I think my only other option is to start all over..!

  • Poor audio quality - PLEASE HELP!

So i recently purchased the Satellite C55T-A5306 and the sounds quality from the laptop itself is really low quality. So to try and enhance the sound, i bought Logitech Z130 Stereo Speakers and it STILL sounds dry and muddy. I plugged the speakers into my iPod and the sound was drastically improved, but when they're in my laptop it sounds flat. I don't know how to make the audio sound better through my speakers. Please help!
I was thinking that if i bought an HDTV and used that as an external monitor and got speakers for my TV, it would sound better and add texture, but i'm unsure if the audio quality would still be dry from the laptop.

Check and see if it you need to update your audio drivers and check their settings. You can check this out via the device manager in control panel. I'm not familiar with this specific model but with mine if you plug in a headphone jack it will bring up the dolby/reltek audio manager. See what kind of quality it's on and whether or not you can put it on stereo, then check your EQ's, bass, that kind of thing. Try having a CD or something going while you do it so you can hear the differences and set it to your liking. If it doesn't come up with the manager try typing in either audio or sound into your start menu's search bar and see what it gives you.
    Best of luck!

  • Poor DVD Video Quality - Transcoding pain

    Hello,
I am working on a video project with the NTSC DVD as the deliverable.  The project is realtively simple.  It contains one mpeg2 video file, an adio track and a few menues.  It is all ok except for the horrible DVD quality I am getting from Encore SC4.  The original mpeg2 video quality is very good.  This mpeg2 video file was generated using the Proshow Producer program with NTSC DVD setting as output.  Here is what mediainfo has to say about this file:
    General
Complete name                            : C:\Local\Piotrek Local Documents on xps435\My Local Shows\2012\04 Pogrzeb Melanii Grobelnej\Pozegnanie Melanii Grobelnej_DVD.mpg

My first problem is why Encore insists on transcoding the video.  I do not see any reason why not to use the video as is.  The "Do not transcode" option is not available.  Perhaps I have some settings in the project that may be incompatible with the DVD video but I realy do not know what they could be.  Please help if you think you know what it could be.
With automatic transcoding the resulting video quality is plain horrible.  I keep blinking my eyes because everything is so badly out of focus.  I keep trying to specify the transcoding quality to as high as Encore allows me but the resulting video stays at very poor quality.  I am not very expierence with the transcoding function of Encore but what I am getting "out of the box" is garbage so I hope you, more expierenced gentlemen, could help me squeese more from this S/W.
    Thanks you in advance,
    Peter

In Proshow Producer there are two ways (two different menue options) to generated an mpeg2 DVD quality file.  One of them gave me a file described by mediainfo in my original email - encore insisted on transcoding it.
The other way of generaring a DVD  mpeg2 file renders a file as below:

The problem is that Proshow Producer crashes (runs out of memory) while generating this file - this is why it is only  30 seconds long.  Now this file does not require transcoding in Encore CS4 and, if it did not crash, would be of acceptable quality.
I do not know what the M/N settings describe but the M/N settings are different in the second file.  Some other settings are different as well, e.g., Bit/(Pixel*Frame).
From what I know and from what Photodex support person told me they do not have a way to generate an .m2v file.  I can generate an mpeg2 with no audio from Producer but the video encoding would be as it is now I would think so I am not sure what difference (if any) this would make.
    Thanks,
    Peter

  • DVD quality poor.

Created a project in Encore with a MP4 file. DVD quality very poor. Very pixilated.  Tried multiple settings. Bitrate etc...   Did same project in FCP, 100% clearer.

Premier monitor picture quality excellent, even full screen.
    Exported – Media -  H.264, MPEG 2 DVD, MPEG2, MP4
    Results the same.
I even tried importing the original clip from the SD card into Encore and the results was the same.
In the Encore monitor, original layout with monitor small, you can see the pixels and the unclearness of the video.
Not even close to the quality with the Premier monitor
I am using a MAC Pro tower, dual Xeon processors, Apple 27” display.
    Thank you again…
What codec is the camera quicktime please? a MOV file is a container, and the source in it could be nigh on anything from AVCHD (unsuitable for editing), Long GOP MPEG, lossless, and anywhere in between.
Besdt approach (in addition to the excellent advice from SafeHarbour) is to import into Premiere and create a new sequence from the clip - this will make sure the sequence settings match the source - and then output (at least this is how I would do it) to an interim SD file first rather than scaling & data reducing at the same time. Use at least an 8-bit file, and I recommend the Aja 2VUY codec.
As to why the difference in the onscreen monitors - are they set up right? I got bitten by this one once, and it turned out the in the hamburger settings (the funny little icon for settings on top right of panel) was set to automatic draft quality......
The biggest problem really is the source - why 1080i please? Will the camera not shoot 1080p?

  • Really poor image quality when watching DVDs

    Hi,
I was just wondering whether anybody else has experienced really poor image quality whilst watching DVDs on their MacBook? For me, the image is really grainy or blurry. I am pretty sure it cannot be the DVDs as this problem is happening with every film I watch!
Is this a common problem? What can be done (if anything) to resolve this?
    Many thanks,
    John

    Hi John,
open system preference>display, and check if your color depth is in millions color.
try other dvd player like VLC for mac:

    Good Luck.

  • Poor image quality after DVD is burned.

    Hi,
Project is fine in FCP and in iDVD before burn but when the burned dvd is played some of the images have lines or large pixels. The large pixels are very obvious in bright or white shots. Haven't had any other problems with the Mac for 4 years.
    Any suggestions or solutions?
    Thanks

    Hi
    a. Can it be so that Your movie is in PAL (25fps) and iDVD in NTSC (29.97fps)
No good way to do it - I use JES_Deinterlacer to convert
    b. I do from FinalCut Pro 6
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Not selfcontained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - IMPORTANT !
This file I import into iDVD
Else read my list on DVD-Quality
    1. iDVD 08 & 09 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    2.Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not selfcontaining, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09 this can also be set)
This can also be done with (Apple) Disk Util tool.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are plabacked by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choise before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario

Anyone have the poor display quality webcam from ThinkPad E440?
This is the first timeI bought a Lenovo product: a ThinkPad E440 with i7 cpu few days ago (I am currently using ASUS UX31). Everything is great except that the webcam have extremely poor quality:

    2. The video chat at night not just very poor in resolution, it actually turn into Black & White at night, in the morning it have color but still extremely poor display quality. Attached photo is taken around evening, no color was detected, all in black and white......is that the normal quality from ThinkPad E440?
I have updated all my drivers again and again.
I am not sure if it is a defect or it is buid to be that poor? How can I troubleshoot before send for repair?

Problem with both the speaker and earphones?
Have you tried another pair of headphones?
Yu can try the standard fixes to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset. nothing is lost.
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
