Poor Flash performance

I have had an issue plaguing one of my computers for awhile now. It simply will not play flash movies at full speed. All the flash I try to view online or from a local file play in slow motion. I just recently did a complete reformat and system install I have installed no other programs, just the system (10.4.11), and Flash is still running at a snails pace. This same computer used to run Flash perfectly with other apps running and all sorts of other stuff going on so I know it's not a system limitation thing. One day Flash just started running slow. I was hoping that the erase and write to zeroes reformat and the fresh install of 10.4 would fix the issue, but no dice. Any suggestions???

Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)
In earlier versions than QT 7.1.3 in Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2007-009.1.1, which also deals with the Quicktime/Flash issues you may have experienced, such as the '?'. What happened was that both Quicktime as well as Adobe FlashPlayer tried to play the Flash video at the same time. This no longer happens. (N.B. Security Update 2007-009 requires both a restart and a permission repair.)

  • Poor Flash performance on G4 mac mini

    Hi,
I've got a 1.25Ghz PPC G4 mini with 512mb running 10.4.11 that exhibits extremely poor Flash performance; jerky almost unwatchable video. I downgraded from Flash 10 to 9, and it only got slightly better, and most videos now require 10. I've heard the Flash drivers for Macs are awful; is this the problem?
Also, maybe possibly related, when I leave the computer on for awhile, the hard disk eventually, and magically, "fills up". After a restart, I have 1.55G of a 37.5G drive. When I leave it on for awhile, it'll get down to Zero KB, and become so slow that I have to restart it again, if it doesn't just crash outright? Is this a memory leak? Is the only way to cure it by wiping the HD and reinstalling the OS?

I think Boece has nailed it. Can you get more memory in your mini? I know it's a pain and the max quoted by Apple is only 1G, but I think a big part of your problem is just plain lack of memory. When the system does not have enough real memory to work with it will use virtual memory - use the hard drive as if it were memory. This really slows things down, especially when you have a hard drive that is way too full as yours is. You have very little ram to be running OS X and you've effectively blocked the system from the work around it wants to use to deal with this by having a hard drive so full. Add a resource hog like flash and the problem just gets worse. Every time I've added memory to a mac the page-outs have gone down and the system become more responsive. You have a lot of page outs. I've seen macs run all day and have zero - but that's with 4-6g ram. Still, the fewer the better. Here's a nice link to Apple's discussion of memory usage in OS X: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342?viewlocale=en_US
Also, flash will never run great on the graphics sub-system in that unit. I have a MDD G4 1.25 with a similar graphics unit and flash isn't great on that either. But for security reasons I would never run less than the latest version of flash - it is one of the main conduits of malware these days and although I've never heard of problems on the mac it's still not good to leave gaping security holes. Hope this helps.

  • Macbook Pro 15 i7 2011 - Overheating and Poor Flash Performance

Anyone out there having similar dissapointing performance from their 'premium' Macbook Pro 15 i7 2011?
Flash - stuttering on flash sites such as you tube, a little bit better with latest update but centrino windows laptop plays better video
Overheating - too hot to have on your lap, fan kicks in while surfing the web and watching movies, absolutely cr@ps itself when playing games using facebook
This is my first mac, and must say for top dollar machine isn't been an underwhelming experience and a bit worried about starting a fire when doing serious work.
Any advice for both issue would be great before I start requesting a refund for what seems to be a bit of lemon and frustrating experience

ok flash does that i mean when you load a flash based video the fan kicks off and the MBP overheats
you can try PRAM reset (hold down Command-Option-P-R during restart, and wait for the machine to restart again) and also SMC reset http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
and check if you have the latest update for your flash player

  • Flash Performance

In all the test I've done, with Flash 9 and 10, it just seems that Flash videos just can't keep up as they can in Windows. Do you think it's a driver or flash problem? It's extremely discouraging, and making me think to give up Linux for Windows because of many example of poor drivers and support for Linux from big business

    sam wrote:
Flash performance is dependent on the flash player and the video driver your computer uses.  Flash player is generally slower in linux than in windows.  This is probably due to adobe's priorities.  Heck, for a long time linux only had flash 7 while windows had flash 9 and many sites used flash 8.  It was a grim time in linux history...  Having said that, the performance difference between windows and Linux versions should still allow for relatively smooth video animations, if it wasn't for the drivers.
I'm not sure if this is because flash now tries to use your video card to speed up rendering or it is because of bad video card drivers, but the drivers have an IMMENSE impact on video.  I have an ati card, and ati has been undergoing a change of philosophy toward linux and this is impacting their drivers.  This usually bring about good change, like AIGLX; however, it introduces many bugs that affect video performance.  The current ati driver is 8.6, however I'm still using 8.4 because 8.5 and 8.6 make youtube videos UNWATCHABLE on my dual core.  The 8.4 driver is slightly sluggish, but at least I can watch flash videos.
The performance of flash videos is indicative of the general performance of flash on the platform.  If you dual boot and want to see this difference, you can try a simple video like youtube.com.  Most likely this will work equally well in both OSs, where you will 'likely' find a difference is HD videos on dailymotion (unless you have a powerful video card).
The good news about all of this is that the future of flash looks very promising.  Adobe finally treats linux with the same respect as windows, and is apparent by the simultaneous release of flash 10.  Ati is breaking milestones with their video drivers, and the open source ati driver will eventually surpass the stability and performance of propriety drivers.
    keep believing it then

  • Flash performance frustration

    Listen,
I am a qualified technician, I have a GTX 560 Ti if you must know, I have provided support for PC Games in the past and help desk support to over 40,000 staff and experienced in QA of software.
If you read my post you would see, that I am talking about mutliple sites on multiple platforms with Flash causing problems over time, crashing my browsers, slowing down my systems and it's not just specific to the most recent update(s), which I have implemented.
If I try and use most games on Facebook, they really slow things down even more (and before you ask if I am running multiple games at once, no I am not, but my system can more than handle non flash applications in multiples.
My problem now is the way you are all trying to polish this over as if this my own system issue, this is much bigger than this.
What is normal flash content by the way ? Are you saying that applications on smart devices or facebook is not normal flash? because this issue is not limited to being specific, however when I have a flash game or a flash site in the background, my whole system starts to chug and it has always been that way no matter what update or system I am on more than 50% of the time.
If you want to blame developers for coding poor flash, then you should have a Flash certification program so people know which apps or websites are Adobe approved/certified to run smoothly.
Flash is very lucky that systems performance are increasing at increasingly fast rates, but the amount of resources shown by flash related content doesn't actually seem to be the real amount of resources it is using, I am wondering if this is hidden by how much resources it gains from Video or Graphics cards (and borrowed memory).
This most recent update, including being used with IE 9, Firefox 5 or the latest version of Safari is by no means an exception to the rule.
I should not have to troubleshoot so often my flash problems, this should have been done IN YOUR LABS properly, before being sent out to the public. I can of course choose not to use sites, not to have a playbook (which renders flash better than my PC funny enough, even though my PC is 10x as powerful)
You are trying to help and I am grateful for that, but I am putting this out there because I feel its very important to discuss further.

I branched this out to a new thread because it was off topic from the thread it was originally posted on (which was specific to IE9, 10.3 and Intel HD GPU's.)
I am a qualified technician, I have a GTX 560 Ti if you must know, I have provided support for PC Games in the past and help desk support to over 40,000 staff and experienced in QA of software.
As you know, there are an almost unlimited number of devices and drivers out there in the wild.  We ask for the GPU hardware and driver details because the latest releases of Flash Player take advantage of them.  To try and reproduce issues, we do our best to duplicate the environment that issues occurred on.  We've also found that this information is critical to us reproducing the issue.  Many times, older drivers/gpu's have bugs or don't support the hardware features we require for hardware acceleration.  This can manifest itself in many different ways (black video, flashing graphics, crashes, etc.)
If you read my post you would see, that I am talking about mutliple sites on multiple platforms with Flash causing problems over time, crashing my browsers, slowing down my systems and it's not just specific to the most recent update(s), which I have implemented.
While I understand the frustration, it's difficult to approach this without specifics.  If you run into a crash with Flash Player, please see this post for details on retrieving the crash log.  We work constantly to improve the performance and quality of the player and we take customer reported issues with the highest priority.  Maybe you could take some video of what you're experiencing so we could get a better reference to what's happening on your system.
If I try and use most games on Facebook, they really slow things down even more (and before you ask if I am running multiple games at once, no I am not, but my system can more than handle non flash applications in multiples.
Is there a particular game this occurs with?  Does it happen right away?  Is it only when there's heavy action on the screen?  Again, video might help to understand what you're seeing.
My problem now is the way you are all trying to polish this over as if this my own system issue, this is much bigger than this.
I'd love to be able to reproduce this on my system, but I'm not being impacted like you are.  I'm not trying to blame your system, I just need more info about what my system is missing that would allow me to experience what you are experiencing.
Again, I understand the frustration.  I also understand if you don't want to help troubleshoot the problems.  However, if you do, we're here to listen and help if we can.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • I have recently upgraded my ipad mini to iOS 6.0.2 and still have poor wifi performance. My 3rd generation ipad works great on the same network. I have done all the resets I can think of but nothing helps. I would not have purchased the mini had I known.

On the same wifi network, third generation ipad, iphone4s and MacBook Pro work just fine.  The ipad mini often can not connect with the mail server and seems to hang a long time trying to open a web page. Had I known the mini had this kind of difficulty on wifi, I would have reconsidered my purchase. I have tried resetting the network and renewing the lease on the mini in addition. To completing the most current iOS upgrade. Still poor wifi performance. Unacceptable, in my opinion.

Yes I tried this manyfold. But did not work.  Reading on, I took Tesserac's advice. Shut down router and computer.
Start router after 15 minutes and wait another 10 minutes before starting the computer.
Et voila.... everything is back in working order,

  • [SOLVED] Poor 2D performance of Radeon 7200 with newest xf86-video-ati

Today arrived new version (6.12.99) of ATI OSS driver (also new version of ati-dri 7.6, mesa 7.6 and xorg-server 1.7.1) Since that moment I'm experiencing poor 2D performance, especially in GIMP (scrooling of zoomed canvas). Also switching of virt. desktop where is bloated Java app. or fat Firefox instance result in poor render of screen (program renders by parts/semiwindows).

BTW I'm not using Compiz. Has anyone an idea what could happen? In Glxgears I'm achieving 1200fps, but working with GIMP is laggy-horror.

  • What most affects Flash performance?

What components, hardware and software, affect Flash
    performance the most?
I believe that video cards have no bearing, but have
recently come into a debate over the RAM vs processor.
Also, on Windows XP, any tricks to bring up performance
    speed?
    Thanks in advance,
    michael

Do you mean in reference to authoring or the player?

  • Poor Bluetooth performance with all aluminum Mac Pro

The all aluminum case for pre-mavericks Mac Pro is the primary reason for poor antenna performance of Bluetooth. Aluminum, being a good conductor, acts as a reflector of EMF forming what is known as a Faraday Cage, essentially trapping emissions within the box. Normally, holes drilled in the case would allow enough EMF to pass through the case but the hole size for transmission is directly proportional to the lowest frequency that will pass through easily. An example is the typical microwave oven where the window is actually a conducting sheet with small enough hole such that higher freq light waves pass easily through the sheet but lower frequency microwaves do not. Perhaps if the drive bay covers were made of plastic, transmission of the Bluetooth and wifi would be sufficient. One might carefully nibble a slot or two in the side door but this would surely invalidate any warranty and care would have to be taken not to get aluminum particles inside the computer. This would probably nullify any FCC approval of the machine due to clocking noise interference with other devices. The best approach would probably be a tuned waveguide that passes frequencies only around 2.4 GHz ~ 5 GHz through the case (very similar to the way tuned ports on audio speakers pass a band of frequencies needed to extend bass response). I'm sure Apple will have corrected this design flaw in the new Mac Pro introduced this year. If you have lots of time on your hands you can get a college level text on electromagnetics (Maxwell's Equations, etc.) and derive all the details but with a bit of experimenting and reading about tin can antenna mods to wireless routers you should be able to improve Bluetooth performance significantly.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I will have to move my wireless home base station.  It is on the same desk as my mini so much less than 5 feet away.

  • Poor 3G performance from Hutchinson 3 Service Provide at HK

any Hong Kong 3G iphone users experiencing poor 3G performance on Hutchinson 3 network? test my 3G iphone against original EDGE iphone at same spot on office floor, browsing to www.yahoo.com and the performance was marginally quicker than EDGE. after calling our service provide, being told that we were capped on network bandwidth of 7.2mbps but the real speed testing was around 0.3mbps.... this is unacceptable performance.
Apple - please speak to vendor, this is making your product look BAD.

  • IPhone 4S Poor Battery Performance SOLVED!!

iPhone 4S Poor Battery Performance SOLVED!!
I found the issue with the iPhone 4S battery performance.
I bought 2 iPhone 4S models on the first day. One for my wife and one for me. The strange thing was that mine would kill the battery in 4-6 hours and ran VERY WARM to the touch. My wife's phone worked great. It was cold to the touch. She would forget to charge it at night... and the battery performance was great... even better than our prior 3GS models.
What was the difference? I have my phone connected to Exchange for my corporate email. But exchange is not exactly the problem. The issue is in Notification Center. For some reason, I had hundreds of calendar reminders that kept refreshing on notification center. Furthermore, the reminders would flicker between the time remaining and the start time for the event at such a fast rate that it could not be read... (clearly a bug)
What is the solution? Go to Settings>Notifications>Calendar and disable Notification Center. You can still have the "alert style" set to Banners, or Alerts and you will still receive notices about your events, but it will not BUILD a summary in the Notification Center drop down screen. This is where the BUG exists. [Oddly, this does not affect my iPad 2, but is an issue for iOS 5 on the iPhone (different builds, maybe?)]
So, it appears that Notification Center has an endless loop in collecting the calendar events from Exchange and this is burning up our 4S batteries. Once you stop the madness from Notification Center, your iPhone 4S will perform as advertised.
    Enjoy!

  • Flash Performance testing

    Hi All
I am Newly using Flash player into my web application, I want
to check Flash performance in the web application
Can you help me by listing some GUI tools that supports Flash
    Performance testing?
    Thanks In advance
    Rajesh

I agree with having the developer test on the lowest config
PC we have, which they currently perform. But, we have a seperate
group that performs Performance testing on all web applications and
they are looking for a tool. They currently use a combination of
    Rational and Mercury products.

  • Satellite Pro S500-11C - poor audio performance

    Hi Folks,
I have a Satellite Pro S500-11C which suffers from the poor audio performance mentioned in reviews of the S500-11C (yeah I should have *+listened+* to the reviews and excuse the pun).
This is making it very difficult to use this laptop for audio applications such as music, VOIP and Skype without having to carry about a heaeset of some type.
Has anyone else eperianced this problem and had a solution. Any help from Toshiba??
    Best Regards,
    Andrew

Sorry but what kind of problem do you mean exactly? Is the sound not loud enough or what?
I mean this notebook has standard stereo speakers and not high end harman/kardon speakers inside.
I have Satellite L300 in front of me with same stereo speakers. Sound is OK but not so good as on other laptops with h/K speakers.
By the way: what kind of help do you expect? Some new driver that makes speakers louder maybe?

  • N82 Flash Performance

So how does the phone's flash perform its operation comparing to other hi end nokia camphones and other tops like k850i etc? Is it that outstanding or so so..?Message Edited by korngear on 30-Nov-200709:26 PM

    Ahem..
Well. Say you sittin in a literally non lit, pitch black room that's 13-15 feet in length. Take a picture with this 82 and it's like someone switched on a neon light in the room. I never knew I'd smile at a picture like this. Sure pic quality CAN be better, but the flasher kills off some of the quality disappointment. I wore glasses in college and only wear'em when I watch TV, till today. Without wearin' 'em now and lookin at pix compared betwwen this handset and the k850i.. I'd say what I see. About 6-70% brighter pix from the 82. Pic quality.. I don't know.. Hmmm.. And shanapps.. The red I don't light blinds the freak outta anybody just as much or more. ok ok.. its flash.. It's just perfect for the mobile phone age we're in, but for right now. Honestly, I'm satisfied. Alot!
    Peace..
tim aka sal aka moee here.
Does Nokia have product Beta-Testing nowadays?
