Poor focus on close up photos SX280HS

Hi.
I have a 6 month old SX280HS which replaced a similar 3 year old Canon P&S (identity forgotten).
Both have had the same problem, which caused me to replace the first, thinking it had gone wrong and was just out of warantee.
I use these cameras for taking close up shots of antique weapons to post on my web site.
Of particular interest to viewers is the engraving which showes up beautifully crisp when taken by my steam powered Olympus but is most definately soft focus on both of these Canons.
The image appears perfect when viewed on the camera's preview screen but once downloaded to my pc is quite poor.
I have tried different image sizes to no avail.
I have been using the P setting, cancel flash and use only natural daylight. To avoid over brightness I use the +/- key.
I download direct, not using Canon software via a USB cable (which I replaced with other for the same result).
I suspect that due to my ignorance I am doing something really dumb as I can not believe that I have had two faulty cameras.
Can any one suggest a solution?
Thank you is advance,
Toby Barclay

Macro mode is the close focusing mode and because it's so close you may need to use a tripod for really sharp results so experiment a bit. Because I don't have very fast internet service to speed up downloading manuals here's the instructions from my G9 manual which should point you in the right direction.

  • Camera won't focus up close. Any answers?

Ever since I updated to iOS 6.0.1 my camera will no longer focus at close range. It is particularly noticeable while trying to capture text in a photo but is also noticeable with normal photography. Does anyone know anything about this or have any possible solutions/explanations?

  • Quality of close-up photos taken inside w/flash??

    With Q10!
I'm thinking of switching from my Point & Shoot camera to using the Q10 for close-up photos with poor lighting inside.
Is there any difficulty taking close-up photos inside with the flash?  Is there any set-up required or will it work fine with factory settings?
How do such photos compare with Point & Shoot camer photos?
    Thanks for any/all info!

I don't think that any smartphone is able to perform better than a "real" camera.
There are speculations around other brands that I won't name here but, as far as I am concerned, I don't put high expectations from a device that wasn't build for a specific use.
As a spare solution yes, but not more I would say.

  • School photo with 25 kids and I have been able to name 17 on them - but the remaining 8 faces I am unable to name. I go through the process (done it thousand of times) and type in the name and it sticks, I close the photo and reopen I

I have a photo with 25 faces.  I have named 17 with no problem but the remaining 8 names I am unable to make them stick.  I go through the process (have done it thousands of times) and no luck.  I have shut down the computer, I have unplugged it, I have turned iPhoto off and nothing will allow me to name these remaining photos.  I type in the name and click RETURN and the name holds, I close the photo and bring it back and the name is gone. I have done this dozen of times - still no luck.  I have a few other photos of groups and the same thing is happening with just a few of the faces.  All the faces are clear, same size and no different in clarity than the other faces.  I have tried changing the size of the "box" around the photo to name it - still no luck.
I am on the ground floor so I can not throw the computer out the window.

Im wondering why my post hasn't been answered yet.  I did file a report with the BBB and I had a rude representative from Verizon call me named Steve. He said I can file all of the reports I want and I will just keep getting calls from him.  I can understand why my phone couldn't be replaced because of the small crack.  I guess I have to eat that one (but it sucks because the lollipop update is what caused the problems)  but what about all of the data overage I had to pay for for trying to fix this phone because of a lollipop update.  I dont think it is fair to have to pay that as well. In addition,  because I have an east coast phone number but live on the west coast, I cannot have tech support after 8pm.  Verizon has cut this off.  Im very dissatisfied and I have been a customer of Verizon for 13 years.  Im hoping for a response this time.

  • Lumia 1020 doesn't focus up close (macro)

According to the specs, the Lumia 1020 should be able to auto-focus as close as 15cm. However, my phone consistently has trouble focusing that close. Typically, if the subject is between 15cm and 25cm away and I hold down the shutter half-way to focus, or touch the screen on a focus point, the focusing system temporarily focuses, but then immediately "pops back" out of focus.
SOMETIMES I can focus up to around 15cm, but it's not consistent and so I've been finding it difficult to get macro shots in general with the phone.
Has anybody else had this problem, or is possibly just an issue with my specific phone?

I've never managed to get as close as 15cm,  I've so far been standing further back and then digitally zooming in. if you have bright light then the technique works exceptionally well
some of the bods have been getting some great shots using the manual focus, have a look at this thread from a while back
    http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Pictures-and-Videos/Lumia-1020-impressive-camera/m-p/2124983#M10511
I've had the phone since the 17th Sept. and it's a great camera but I think it needs a different mindset, it's not as simple as just point and shoot.  One thing that struck me on using it after an SLA is how wide angle the lens is, it's like shooting with a permanently attached wide angle lens,  and I think this is the cause of the problem.
I think I need two extra elements to make it into an awesome macro machine.
    1)  something like this http://www.olloclip.com/    to refocus the lens onto a small area.  (if you couple this with the 1020 camera, it would be amazing not far off a small microscope)
    2)  an app that will save your manual setting as a list of favorites so you don't have to constantly set them back up each time you turn the camera on.

When I burn dvd in iPhoto, it comes out with original photo plus separate close up photos of each face in original photo.  How do I get it to stop doing that?

I am reading this post in the iphoto for iOS forum. The iPad does not burn photos to a DVD. Perhaps you'll get some assistance if you posted in th general iPhoto forum.

  • Import of photos from iPad frozen and cannot close i photo or disconnect iPad

import of photos from i-pad to i-mac has stalled midstream.  Cannot close i-photos or disconnect pad from mac.  How do I proceed please?

Thank you Nick.  I did a version of that by closing the pad, unplugging then force quit i photos.  I am very new to i Mac but learning fast.  The Mac opened in I photos when I plugged in the pad, not I tunes as normal.  As soon as opened I tunes then plugged in the pad, it all fell into place.

  • Why won't my Canon 100 mm L lens stay focused in close up shots.

My 100 mm canon L lens won't stay focused when i focus on close objects. Even with IS off & lens set on manual focus. It acts like it can't decide where/what to focus on.

I also own this lens and use very frequently for taking macro shots.  It is easy to be closer to the subject than the lens is designed for, about 11 inches.  Actually, when shooting things like bugs it is within the bug comfort range, and the subject flys away before you can shoot.  To be able to get closer than the minimum focus distance you can add one or a series of extension tubes.  These tubes actually extend the mm of your lenses lenth by a precise amount.  This does not give you any more magnification, but allows you to photograph with your 100mm macro lens closer to the subject than the minimum focus distance.  These tubes are placed between the body of the camera, and the lens.  The tubes are hollow, and have no glass installed in them.  Some tubes do have electrical connections to the body of the camera and lens through the tubes.  This allows the auto focus to operate.  You may have to manual focus a touch to achieve pin point focus on the subject.  But the outer element of the lens will be much closer to the subject.  Canon makes these tubes, but you will pay a high price for them.  Sets are available from third party companies like Kenko, which are very good.  The set includes 3 tubes, in various lenths, my set has 31mm, 21mm and 13mm, and will allow the electronic focus to function.  I hope this information is helpful.  The Canon EF 100mm 2.8L IS USM is one of their best lenses.

  • Z3 not capturing close up photos properly....need proper setting

    I'm very disappointed with Z3.
It isnt able to focus on and capture closeup objects clearly. I tried **bleep** lot of setting but nothing seems to work.
In fact my Lumia 730 phones captures any closeup photo with a breezee and that too on automatic settings.
Z3 does captures close object but not much close enogh which I want. For that I have to always use my Lumia phone to capture objects as close to near 5cm or less.
In one of my old threads @ Ashroft98 suggested me a setting:
To take close up,again you could use "Superior Auto" (which works the best, for me) or second, change to Manual Mode and change to these settings "Exposure to f2.0 and change ISO to 50" credits to @SergioPL for sharing these custom settings.
I dint got what he meant by Exposure to f2.0. Which value is to be set to 2.0?
1] Also what is Metering setting and why should we use it?
2] Does Metering and Focus mode interfere with each other?
3] And when should we turn on HDR & Image Stabiliser settings? Are they helpful for a Close-up capture?
-------- If my Post or Answer helped you out, Please KUDOS me

Hello RohitTech I am going to make this as short as possible but you are asking a lot of questions...
    0) The Z3 / Z3C is tricky to take Macro photography... It also happens to me and I think it is a weakness of those devices maybe because of the wide angle lens
What I do to take "better" macro pictures (either on superior auto or manual mode) is to get close to the subject BUT not too close, in fact I keep the camera at over 10 cm apart, and press the shutter button until you see the Focusing Square BLUE, this will let you know that the object is in focus. AND THEN I will zoom in until the first step, which lets you know that you are still taking an 8MP picture, using lossless zoom (basically cropping the full 20MP into an 8MP at the center). In the end the pictures look way better. But to be honest this phone is no the best suited for macro.
Here is a pic I took using the method I just described and to the right is another image without zoom, as close as I could get without losing focus. Both are cropped to similar magnification and both are 8MP pictures taken in Superior Auto Mode. (TO SEE BETTER, SAVE THE PICTURE AND OPEN FULL SIZE)
    1) Metering is the area inside the frame, used to detect how much light it lets into the sensor. For instance, if you set Metering to "Spot" it will adjust the whole image according to the light conditions in a small spot (no bigger than the focusing square)... this way if you are pointing at a light bulb the whole picture will turn very dark and you will be able to take a pic of said light bulb. If you set metering to "Center" (or Face, both recommended for regular use) the lightness of the image will be calibrated to an area in the center (or at the face of a subject) bigger than spot, but smaller than "Multi".
    2) Metering and Focus are different settings and normally do not interfere with each other. Metering is the calibration of light across the image, and Focus is the concentration point of the image, where the subject/s will look sharper.
    3) HDR should be turned on for pictures with very different contrast in scene, for example taking a picture of somebody with backlight (HDR will help reducing the light at the background and compensate the subject in the front)... please take a look at this suggestions I made.
Image Stabiliser is very helpful when recoding video, taking low light pictures and movement in general (when the movement is present at the camera)... For taking pictures of moving SUBJECTS you should switch to Manual Mode and select Sports scene.
I would NOT recommend HDR for macro (close-up) captures because the contrast is dimmer and you will lose details.
My advice is to actually try every setting and mode and see how it changes in your pictures, dont be afraid to tweak, it is all reversible... I self taught everything I know about photography ( I am not a pro) and I started learning with my old Xperia Acro S. My new Z3 Compact is actually very different in many areas.

  • Poor print quality with Epson Photo R265 - Please help

I am changing over from Windows to Mac and finding it 'challenging' - it's me; not the mac (which I love)I'm sure, so any help would be much appreciated.
My problem is: when I plugged my usb into the mac it instantly recognised my printer but when I printed a photo from iPhoto the quality was very poor with faded colours and faint lines.
I went hunting for an answer, and convinced I'd found it, I downloaded the latest drivers from Epson but on reprinting...exactly the same problems.
The on-screen quality is superb but on paper it's poor.
I'd really appreciate any suggestions or help. I'm not at all knowledgeable when it comes to computers.
    thank you
    Caroline

Both programs print very poorly. Either light and faded or streaker, or if I change the settings, very dark. Both useless. Frustrated I tried the same pics on Picassa on my Windows notebook. Quality was excellent. Put Picassa on the iMac and it now works great - in Picassa. how can that be?

  • Poor focus on external isight

well, i've read the posts about checking to see if an external isight is functioning properly. i think that mine is; but the focus is poor. when i compare it with the built-in isight on my macbook pro, there's no comparison. i sent the first one back, the new one is exactly the same. doesn't look too bad till you have it side-by-side with the one in the laptop. for the price of this thing, plus the fact that you have to spend $30 to get a plastic mount for my imac, it's a shame.
can anyone else compare the built-in and the external and let me know what they see?
    thanks

    Hi Gavin,
No, I have the internal on a intel iMac and the external on a Power Mac G5.
Did you get the trial of iGlasses or the full version?
I did give you bad info about the focus. The external has focus, but the internal does not.
The iglasses web site says this:
NOTE: Some cameras will display a different list of settings. Available settings is based on camera capability. For example, the "built-in iSight" does not have "Focus" because that camera doesn't have the ability to control focus.
But, since indeed your problem is with the external then this should not apply. I do not remember which settings are not available in the demo version.
Maybe some else here is using the demo version on an external that could tell us if they have the availability to "focus". The full version certainly does - along with some of those features that, I agree, are pretty "useless" - unless you have more time than sense ;~)

  • Why is an "original" iPhoto export poorer quality than my original photo?!

    Hi Everyone,
I hope you're all well. I had a question regarding iPhoto - I have an SLR which takes really good quality pictures, and I wanted to back them up in more than one location. I already have them in my iPhoto library - however, when I tried to export them with the "Original" option on File Export, and compared the exported version to the ones in iPhoto, its poorer quality than the one in iPhoto! Even though I selected "Original" quality!! However, when I exported it using PNG, it was exactly like the photos imported in to iPhoto. I understand that PNG is a lossless file format, but I am very confused as to why exporting photos in its original format gives a worse quality picture!
Would someone please be able to explain what is going on, and why the original export is much worse than PNG?
    Thank you for your time!
    Regards

How are you determining that the export is "much worse" than the imported photo
What format are you shooting on the DSLR (I assume it is digital)? What format are you exporting?
For what it is worth I do two daily backups (Time Machine running hourly and a daily bootable clone of my entier system) and I dod an occasional off site backup and I use three 32 GB level 10 SD cards so even shooting 16 MP RAW I only rotate back to the oldest card about once a year giving me a year's originals in addito=ion to my other backups

  • Poor resolution on small/resized photos

I'm creating a tri-fold business brochure in AppleWorks 6 using a template I downloaded from the HP website. The brochure features an equal mix of photos and text, but once I insert the photos into the brochure they look like crap (on the screen and when printed...even on EXPENSIVE brochure paper). I'm resizing the photos from their original gigantical iPhoto size to apx 250X150 and exporting the photos into the "Pictures" folder in my Finder. When opened from Finder/Pictures in "Preview" the small photos look fine - - like mini versions of the originals, which is what I want. Once inserted into the brochure, the pix look blurry and pixelated, especially if I resize them at all in within the Frames window. Even if I don't touch/resize them in Frames, they still look blurry and pixelated. Is there any way to keep the magnificent clarity of the original photos only in a mini version??!?! This brochure is for my new business so it's important that it looks professional.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2 GHz PowerPC

    Hi tealfrank,
I think the problem is you are undersizing your images, from your description. I was wondering why you are changing the size of the orginal? Can not the brochure software handle the orginal sizes and auto size to fit into brochure when you put it together?
I would personally experiment and print only your resized images, see how they look... if they are acceptable then it must be the software you are using to build brochure or how you are further resizing once you get the images in the brochure...

  • Poor usability with music and photos in X6

    Hi!
I would like to highlight few major usability issues with my X6, whichfor I'm not so happy user:
    Music:
All music is stored in phone in one big bucket. This is not issue when you want to browse or play the music but this is issue when you would like to change ringtone. What user will get is huge list of filenames, possible thousands of files where all the ringtones and music are "nicely"  mixed in single list! This makes nearly impossible to change ringtones because who would like to browse a long list to select a ringtone.
This is also problem because comes with music files can't be used as ringtones but those are still existing in the list.
    Photos:
Same problem than with music files. All photos are stored in one big bucket wihtout ability to easily put them in albums.
If you want to move photos to folders or send them by email you will have huge task. In every photo you need to select it, click Options, click sub menu and then click Select. Four clicks to select one photo. Please, think about repeating this 20 times.
    Ovi services:
Where are public APIs to make own application work with OVI? Calendar sharing? Contact sharing?
You could make this much much better way

I couldn't agree more This is the only problem I have with this phone, wonder if they will resolve with an update?
