Poor folio performance when set to PDF for both renditions
Hello,
I'm getting ready to release a single edition folio and had originally planned to create separate folios for both iPad 1/2 & iPad 3. It then became apparent that this process isn't available for single edition professional dps. I've now tried creating one 1024 folio w/pdf settings. Both renditions look beautiful, but the performance is not really poor - it takes multiple swipes to change pages within an article. Is there any other methods any of you can suggest to handle this? Both apps perform much better when you using png settings. It's starting to feel like we'll either need to sacrifice performance or display at this point. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Darin
I haven't toggled the zoom enabled button to see if there's any difference. I should state that I've only tested this in the content viewer - I haven't tested the .ipa files yet. Would there be a noticeable difference?
I'm only testing one two page article that only contains one scrollable content overlay - nothing too complex.
Folios and viewer are both v25.

The order of topics in the Project Manager is not reflected when creating a PDF for review.
Can't seem to find an answer to this in the forums...
Using RH10.
In the Project Manager pod is a default 'Project Files' folder.
Within that I have a 'Topics' folder in which my topic files reside.
Under the View menu, I have selected 'By Topic Title'. I understand that this displays the topics by their title as opposed to their file name. I understand that this is a display toggle only, and has no relation to the order of the topics - the alternative toggle is 'By File Name'.
Notice in the image below, my topics are displayed by topic title, but aren't in alphabetical order. ...yet.
There's a button at the top of this window for changing the sort order to 'Sort by Name', which has the result below.
Ok, so now the topics are displayed by topic title, and in alphabetical order.
Question 1: If that button toggles the view to display topics in 'alphabetical order', what on earth is the other order called? It's certainly not in order of file name, as I've checked a bunch of the topic filenames, and can't see any pattern/order to the this structure.
Question 2: When I go to create a PDF for review (via Review > Create PDF for Review), the window that appears displays all the topics available to me to select for review. However, they're displayed in this other 'odd' sort order instead of 'alphabetical' order. The Help menu says that this window reflects the order of topics as it finds them in the Project Manager. However, what seems to be actually happening is it's displaying the topics based on the view you have selected under the View menu (i.e. either 'View by Topic Title' or 'View by File Name'), and regardless of which view toggle you have selected, the order of the topics is only ever this 'odd' sort order. In other words, in the 'Create PDF for Review' window, it appears I can never see the topic list in alphabetical order. Furthermore, it appears that the only way I can resolve this is to go back into the Project Manager, switch to 'odd' sort order, and manually drag all the topics into alphabetical order. ...I have hundreds of topics.
Is there some way I can quickly change this 'odd' sort order to 'alphabetical'? There must be some underlying file with this order of topics in it (hopefully).Hi there
I don't have an immediate answer for Question 2, but for Question 1, the topic order is "User Defined" as you are able to click and drag topics to create any arrangement that suits you. This was something added as a result of user feedback. Enough users asked Adobe to allow them to arrange topics this way that they made it a reality. The logic escapes me as I'm a user that normally expects software to list things in either ascending or descending alphabetical order.
Perhaps Peter will pop in with a nice explanation of the PDF for Review sorting and Adobe's logic behind it.
Cheers... Rick -
UAC Behaviour when set to "Prompt for Consent on the Secure Desktop"
We are in the process of testing UAC on Windows 8.1. UAC is enabled for admins and the setting for "Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval mode" is set to "Prompt for consent on the secure desktop".
This results in the administrator having to go through three separate prompts in order to execute the function which required elevation.
First there is a dialog which gives the options "I want to complete this action by entering my credentials on the authentic Windows sign-in screen" or "I don't want to complete this action"
Second there is a prompt to press CTRL-ALT-DEL to enter your credentials
Third there is the prompt for consent on the secure desktop.
Is there a way I can configure UAC to not have the first two prompts?Hi Fangzhou and thanks for the reply. The action is just to "Run as Administrator" on anything. Perhaps I should share the full set of settings I have in group policy:
User Account Control: Admin Approval Mode for the Built-in Administrator account
Enabled
User Account Control: Allow UIAccess applications to prompt for elevation without using the secure desktop
Disabled
User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode
Prompt for consent on the secure desktop
User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for standard users
Prompt for credentials on the secure desktop
User Account Control: Detect application installations and prompt for elevation
Enabled
User Account Control: Only elevate executables that are signed and validated
Disabled
User Account Control: Only elevate UIAccess applications that are installed in secure locations
Enabled
User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode
Enabled
User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation
Enabled
User Account Control: Virtualize file and registry write failures to per-user locations

Adobe Indesign keeps crashing when exporting to PDF (for certification)
Hi,
We've been having more and more of these crashes of Indesign, always happens when we want to export a indesign file to a PDF. Most of the times a simple restart will fix it for a while, but the error always returns.
Can someone give me a few hints where I should start looking?

Poor query performance when joining CONTAINS to another table
We just recently began evaluating Oracle Text for a search solution. We need to be able to search a table that can have over 20+ million rows. Each user may only have visibility to a tiny fraction of those rows. The goal is to have a single Oracle Text index that represents all of the searchable columns in the table (multi column datastore) and provide a score for each search result so that we can sort the search results in descending order by score. What we're seeing is that query performance from TOAD is extremely fast when we write a simple CONTAINS query against the Oracle Text indexed table. However, when we attempt to first reduce the rows the CONTAINS query needs to search by using a WITH we find that the query performance degrades significantly.
For example, we can find all the records a user has access to from our base table by the following query:
SELECT d.duns_loc
FROM duns d
JOIN primary_contact pc
ON d.duns_loc = pc.duns_loc
AND pc.emp_id = :employeeID;
This query can execute in <100 ms. In the working example, this query returns around 1200 rows of the primary key duns_loc.
Our search query looks like this:
SELECT score(1), d.*
FROM duns d
WHERE CONTAINS(TEXT_KEY, :search,1) > 0
ORDER BY score(1) DESC;
The :search value in this example will be 'highway'. The query can return 246k rows in around 2 seconds.
2 seconds is good, but we should be able to have a much faster response if the search query did not have to search the entire table, right? Since each user can only "view" records they are assigned to we reckon that if the search operation only had to scan a tiny tiny percent of the TEXT index we should see faster (and more relevant) results. If we now write the following query:
WITH subset
AS
(SELECT d.duns_loc
FROM duns d
JOIN primary_contact pc
ON d.duns_loc = pc.duns_loc
AND pc.emp_id = :employeeID
SELECT score(1), d.*
FROM duns d
JOIN subset s
ON d.duns_loc = s.duns_loc
WHERE CONTAINS(TEXT_KEY, :search,1) > 0
ORDER BY score(1) DESC;
For reasons we have not been able to identify this query actually takes longer to execute than the sum of the durations of the contributing parts. This query takes over 6 seconds to run. We nor our DBA can seem to figure out why this query performs worse than a wide open search. The wide open search is not ideal as the query would end up returning records to the user they don't have access to view.
Has anyone ever ran into something like this? Any suggestions on what to look at or where to go? If anyone would like more information to help in diagnosis than let me know and i'll be happy to produce it here.
Thanks!!Sometimes it can be good to separate the tables into separate sub-query factoring (with) clauses or inline views in the from clause or an in clause as a where condition. Although there are some differences, using a sub-query factoring (with) clause is similar to using an inline view in the from clause. However, you should avoid duplication. You should not have the same table in two different places, as in your original query. You should have indexes on any columns that the tables are joined on, your statistics should be current, and your domain index should have regular synchronization, optimization, and periodically rebuild or drop and recreate to keep it performing with maximum efficiency. The following demonstration uses a composite domain index (cdi) with filter by, as suggested by Roger, then shows the explained plans for your original query, and various others. Your original query has nested loops. All of the others have the same plan without the nested loops. You could also add index hints.

Poor keynote performance when presenting with an MBP 2.16
Hi,
I've been using Keynote extensively to make scientific presentations ever since it came out, first on a Powerbook G4 and then recently on an MBP 2.16. One of the reasons I got a new MacBook Pro was in fact to improve (= speed up, smooth) animations when presenting: This was acceptable on the Powerbook, but choppy on occasions, and I like my presentations to be perfect. I naturally expected a considerable improvement on the MBP.
To my dismay, it's just the reverse: Performance is in fact absolutely horrible when presenting (that is, with the computer connected via the DVI-to-VGA connector to a projector; using the projector as a second screen): Quicktime movies embedded in the presentation are choppy, slide transitions that playted fine before now often exhibit hiccups (e.g., page flip systematically hiccups), several somewhat complex animations (such as "spinning" a large image") totally fail (instead of the cool spinning, I now get a long pause followed by the all-at-once appearance of the image!) ; it sometimes takes ages (4-5 seconds) long to "build" the next slide, leading to confusion as to whether you have requested the next slide to be displayed or not and the ensuing chaos as you make additional keypresses &c.
Why is this? I've considered possibilites such as I am running Keynote in Rosetta (not the case), I don't have the correct OpenGL drivers after a recent upgrade snafu (the drivers are the correct version), &c. &c. Keep in mind too that this is a 1G trouble-free 2 months old machine with 10.4.7 and nothing too exotic on it. How can a faster machine with loads more VRAM run Keynote so poorly, and disappointgly much less well than my two-year-old PB G4???
Any tips or insights appreciated.
-- axel c.Thanks for your message. I've never had any trouble working with Keynote and testing out presentations on the MBP's own screen; only when projecting and displaying the presentation itself on a secondary screen. I've just ordered an extra G of RAM hoping this would perhaps help alleviate the issues, but your experience (with your 2G machine) suggests it won't change much.
Unfortunately I deleted the demo version right away, but the fact that it works properly suggests some issue with preferences, caches or the like perhaps?
We're not progressing much on this problem.

Pause / Resume button combination not working when set to display for "rest of project"
Good day,
I have created a set of four objects on slide2 of my project
1. Smart Object rounded rectangle with text "(playing) - CLICK to Pause" [this is the graphic the user sees]
2. Smart Object rounded rectangle with text "(paused) - CLICK to Resume" [this is the graphic the user sees]
3. Smart Object rectangle, transparent, used as button, set to not display in project - btn_Resume
4. Smart Object rectangle, transparent, used as button - btn_Pause
A. Script assigned to btn_Pause hides btn_Pause and the "CLICK to Pause" graphic, shows the btn_Resume and "CLICK to Resume" graphic, and pauses the project by setting the system pause variable to 1
B. Script assigned to btn_Resume hides btn_Resume and the "CLICK to Resume" graphic, shows the btn_Pause and "CLICK to Pause" graphic, and resumes the project by setting the system resume variable to 1
C. All items are set to display from the beginning of slide2 for the "rest of project"
On slide 2, the buttons hide/show and pause/resume behaviors work correctly.
On slide 3, the correct initial button and graphic appears, and the click sound works when clicked, but no behaviors (show/hide/pause) occur until a good amount of time into the slide: you can click all you want for 20-30 seconds, but nothing works except the click sound. Eventually, the behavior will work.
On slides 4 and following, the correct initial button and graphic appears, and the click sound works when clicked, but no behaviors EVER work.
If the behaviors NEVER, EVER worked, I would keep looking for what I did not have set correctly, but the correct working on the slide where they are set, delayed behavior on the next, and no behavior on the remainder of slides following has me stumped.
Captivate version 6.0.1.240
Windows 7 OS
I hope I'm missing something obvious here, and I'm more than willing to face-palm if you tell me . Otherwise, I have not been able to find any setting that makes any difference. I would REALLY rather not duplicate the buttons and scripts on every page of the project. Given the blog posts I have seen saying this method should work just fine, I'm hoping there is a side quirk somewhere that I'm missing.
Thanks for any help you can give.Without clouding with too much explanation, this technique arose out of a need to deal with (in a different project) objects that were grouped, and wanting to deal with the groups in as simple a way as possible, allow for easy swapping of group assets, and having a few buttons do multiple things. The idea of being able to have multiple interactive buttons stacked on top of each other while appearing for the rest of the project led to trying this simple construct before trying something more complex.
You are correct, that there is a simpler solution, which we ended up using because we were not able to get two interactive buttons stacked on top of each other while displayed for the rest of the project to work properly (although that is SUPPOSED to work, as far as I understand).
Here's what we ended up doing:
A) Two smartshapes used as messaging graphics
B) A single (one) interactive smartshape used as a button
C) A conditional action to pause/resume and show/hide the appropriate messaging graphics
D) All three objects (A&B) stacked, B on top.
E) All objects set to always appear on top, and to display for rest of project.
Our hypothesis, then, is that you are not able to stack interactive objects on top of each other and then display for the rest of the project.
If anyone has evidence to the contrary, we would, gladly, take a look.
Thanks for your interest Lilybiri, and for your input.
Best regards,

Runtime Error when setting sync parameters for Outlook - what to do?
In Desktop Manager, I configure Synchronization to use with Outlook so I can pull my calendar onto the Blackberry. It lets me set it up and then gives me a Runtime Error - Cannot find system in table file. I have Comcast email setup in Outlook, but previously had used Outlook Express when I bought the Blackberry. Could this be part of the problem and if so, how do I fix it?
Thanks for any help you can offer...This bug should be fixed in SDK 4.5. Please use the latest SDK.
My environment is FlashBuilder 4.5 premium and its default SDK 4.5. It's all right on my machine.

LiveCycle crash when selecting a pdf for importing
I am trying to create a new form using LiveCycle and when I go though the initial wizard it asks me if I want to use a PDF as the basis for the form - I select it from my hard drive. It is an x1a format created from a layout I did in InDesign (CS4).
When LiveCycle tries to create the form I get an error that says "An unsupported Operation was Attempted" and then Live Cycle crashes.
I just downloaded the latest version on trial assuming it was was an old buggy version but I get the same thing happening.
Help! This is due tomorrow...
SteveCan you send the form to [email protected] and I wil give it a try.

What scan settings to use when creating multipage pdf for best opening speed.
Example: A four page text pdf created directly from my Epson Perfection V500 photo scanner is 193 kb. It opens quickly and perfectly on my iMac. Opening it on my iPad in iBooks, it takes awhile, and when I turn pages, there's a blank page at first, and then it slowly fills in.
Now, much larger pdf's that I create in Photoshop and InDesign open quickly and perfectly in iBook on my iPad. What gives? Any suggestions? Thanks, TomHi! The previous answer is right on, just wanted to add that the reason that larger PDFs from Photoshop or InDesign might open faster is that they are likely text-based. If your particular project allows for it, you could use the OCR features of Acrobat to extract the text from a scanned page, which would ultimately result in a smaller PDF, which would open faster on your device. See this page for some more information on this process: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/convert-jpeg-scan-ocr-to-pdf.html Hope this helps!

Setting up .pdf for webview
Hi everyone,
I made a few documents in InDesign as 300dpi A4. For print is ok, the real problem I am facing rigth now is webview.
How can I have the smallest possible disk size and retain the best quallity as possible? How do I need to sett it up properly so I can have a version suited for screen viweing?
Thanks,
Cristifunction(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
How can I have the smallest possible disk size and retain the best quallity as possible?
Those requirements are incompatible. If it were possible, I'd surely set them as defaults!
function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
How do I need to sett it up properly so I can have a version suited for screen viweing?
Export using the "Smallest File Size" preset:
"Use these settings to create Adobe PDF documents best suited for on-screen display, e-mail, and the Internet. Created PDF documents can be opened with Acrobat and Adobe Reader 6.0 and later."
Images get downsampled to 100 dpi (which is enough for regular screens, unless people would want to zoom in), saved with JPEG/Lowest Quality -- you might want to notch that up a bit! -- and converted to sRGB. Everything else is unaffected; in particular, if you have very complex vector art, it won't really matter what sort of compression you apply. In that case, you probably should rasterize the vector art, so it can be downsampled and compressed. -
I have an external hard drive of the brand Western Digital.
Before I got my iMac I moved a lot of my important files from my PC to the hard drive and today I went on and connected it to my iMac to move my files over to it.
When it had connected a window popped up that asked if I wanted to use this hard drive with the program Time Machine and create backups. Without thinking it trough enough and reading the warning properly (I'm stupid I know) I clicked "yes". I then realised how stupid it was and cancelled the formatting of the hard drive. But somehow the program still managed to delete all my important files and can't find any way to get them back. Neither can I connect the hard drive to my PC anymore so I can't check if the files are still there (which I doubt they are since I can't see them on my iMac either).
And now I wonder: is there any way for me to get back my lost files or are they lost forever?
Thank you in advance!
//GinaA data recovery specialist or some data recovery programs should be able to help. Most format simply rewrite the directory tree saying no files are on this disk. The bits that represent the files are still flipped appropreiately so they still exists, you just don't have the location info to get at them. Secure formats and erases rewrite each bit to a zero or 1 or random so the data is then truely gone. This type of format takes a long time to complete.
I'm not making a recomendation of a particular program but here is one company that does what you ask:
http://www.remosoftware.com/mac-recovery The cost is pretty high but I'm sure they don't sell many copies and need to cover their development costs.
Good luck and don't write anything on the freshly formatted disk until you decide what to do. -
Poor query performance when using date range
Hello,
We have the following ABAP code:
select sptag werks vkorg vtweg spart kunnr matnr periv volum_01 voleh
into table tab_aux
from s911
where vkorg in c_vkorg
and werks in c_werks
and sptag in c_sptag
and matnr in c_matnr
that is translated to the following Oracle query:
SELECT

Because the field SPTAG is not enclosed by apostropher, the oracle query has a very bad performance. Below the execution plans and its costs, with and without the apostrophes. Please help me understanding why I am getting this behaviour.

Best Regards,
Daniel G.Volker,
Answering your question, regarding the explain from ST05. As a quick work around I created an index (S911~Z9), but still I'd like to solve this issue without this extra index, as primary index would work ok, as long as date was correctly sent to oracle as string and not as number.
SELECT
"SPTAG" , "WERKS" , "VKORG" , "VTWEG" , "SPART" , "KUNNR" , "MATNR" ,
"PERIV" , "VOLUM_01" , "VOLEH"
FROM
"S911"

"MANDT" = :A0 AND "VKORG" = :A1 AND "SPTAG" BETWEEN :A2 AND :A3 AND "MATNR"
BETWEEN :A4 AND :A5
A0(CH,3) = 003
A1(CH,4) = D004
A2(NU,8) = 20101201 (NU means number correct?)
A3(NU,8) = 20101231
A4(CH,18) = 000000000100000000
A5(CH,18) = 000000000999999999
