Poor Image quality in iDVD from iMovie

After creating a video in iMovie using photos, video clips, transitions, music, and Ken Burns, things look great. Everything looks fine in iMovie ('09). I then export it to iDVD to create the menus, etc. So far so good. After burning the disc, the picture quality is really horrible, especially the photos using Ken Burns. I do not know how to describe it....wavy, pixilated, something. The video used, taken using a digital camcorder is tolerable if I remember to deinterlace. What do I have to do to get these pics to look right? IF I export in iMovie using Quicktime, the resulting .MOV is fine....looks great. After exporting to iDVD, it looks awful.....Any help would be appreciated....thank you.

Chris,
not using any de-interlacing
Both iMovie 08 and iMovie 09 only use one field of a DV video frame. iMovie 5 and earlier used both frames. I'm not sure that using just one field makes a lot of difference when the content goes through mpg-2's heavy compression to make a DVD in iDVD.
As far a still images are concerned, the best sizes for NTSC DVDs are 720x540 pixels for standard video and 854x480 pixels for widescreen. Going to larger image sizes can actually reduce the image quality on a DVD.

  • Poor image quality -slideshow iDVD-need help asap

    Hello
does anybody know how to create a better quality slideshow???? It sim,ply does look totally unprofessional .. when the dvd is burned.
We have supersharp images .. but once the DVD is burned and you pop it back in the unit .. the images look fuzzy .. and not as crisp as when you actually run them in iPhoto, or iDVD...
this is really urgent .. I'd appreciate if somebody give us a hint ... what to do .. or is there an alternative to created 100% quality slideshows on a dvd.
We need to play the burned DVD's on a computer (to show to clients) as well as on a TV .. in case the client wants to view the DVD at home.
    please respond to
    [email protected]
    Thank you!
I understand that it might look fuzzy on a TV screen .. but why does it look so bad on a computer screen? That is not a good way to present work/images .. please help!

Don't count on FCE or DVD Studio Pro to be better. I think your issue is with MPEG-2 compression.
I build my slideshows within iDVD, not iPhoto or iMovie HD. Here's an example:
    Ireland 2004 iDVD Project
Nearly 800 images dragged into iDVD as organized folders from the hard drive. Transitions on each image, and menus, sub-menus, and sub-sub menus. The sub-menus are created by clicking on the Folder icon on the iDVD interface.
Main Menu has 6 buttons: Downpatrick, Antrim Coast, Letterkenny, Sligo, Trim, and Extras. Behind each button are additional buttons ranging from 3 to 6 buttons. The Extras button goes fairly deep. When you click on Extras, it gives you 3 choices on a new menu. The "B&Bs" button opens a new menu with 5 buttons. The "Movies" button opens a new menu with 4 buttons. If you click on the "Irish Music" button, you open a new menu with 2 buttons. At that point, you are at a "sub-sub-sub menu."
Music was on 95% of the slideshows. Some movies converted to QT DV from Canon S400 digicam .AVI files (iDVD 4). Now convert to H.264 with QuickTime 7. Images are original 4MP (2MB) JPEG images from the same digicam. This DVD project is around 4GB with all pictures as DVD-ROM content.

  • Poor image quality when played from dvd just burned

I exported a FCP file from FCP using Compressor using several variations: uncompressed, compressed MPEG2 etc... brought the file into DVDSP and burned it to a DVD. when i play it from the dvd on my computer monitor it has these terrible lines and there are dropped frames occassionally. It doesnt look that way when I play it directly from DVDSP or from FCP only from the dvd. What is the problem here and how do I get a dvd whose quality matches the original?

All video brought into DVDSP for authoring is converted to the same format for DVDs, MPEG2.
Your "terrible lines" are probably interlacing artifacts. Look up interlacing in the manual. they always look worse on a computer monitor since that's a progressive display.
Stuttering can be caused by tons of oddball glitches, no way ot even start guessing from where I'm sitting.
but the whole process of going form FCP to DVDSP successfully is clearly and exhaustively explained in about 100 pages of the manuals and, yes, it really can be that complicated.

  • Has anyone had issues with poor image quality when using lightroom to process raw images from Canon 7dmk2

    Hi everyone..
..I have been having image quality issues when using Lightroom to process raw files from a 7d mk2... They are all soft with poor clarity.....tonight in despair I tried processing them  using  canon's software and they are totally different..."much better"
    anyone else had similar problems....Andy

I have a 7D2 and have not had what I interpret as poor image quality that has anything to do with the camera.
Can you post a screenshot of what you’re seeing and what specifically you don’t like?  Maybe there is something you can do differently or at least there may be an explanation for what you’re seeing.
And if you have a raw image that you wouldn’t mind sharing in a public forum, upload to http://www.dropbox.com/ then post a public share link to it in a reply, here.
In other words post a screenshot of what you see in LR, another of what you see using DPP, and a link to the raw file you’re processing.

  • Poor Image Quality on Finished Project

I've seen similar questions before, but no responses. I put together a movie using still pictures, titles, and audio from iTunes using iMovie. I then export it to a .m4v format and import it into iDVD (the newest version). It looks perfect when I view it on my computer, but when I burn it (which works as it should), I get very poor image quality watching it on my TV. The images have red shadows that stretch and cover the faces. Some of the pictures are just more red than they should be, but others are just terrible. Even using the highest quality encoding, the problem persists. PLEASE HELP. Thank you.

    Hi
    a. make a DiskImage first and test this with Apple DVD-player.
(File menu and down "Make a DiskImage")
    b. I only use streamingDV - no .m4v or like (may be it works - I don't know)

*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides. Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named.
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.

Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !

  • Loss of Image quality and shimmering in Imove

Hi. This is a posting very similar to another forum user but I have the same problem!. I am downloading images from a Pentax K10D onto the Book pro and they are fine, as soon as you load them into iMovie they are terrible, poor image quality, edges of what ever is inside the photo move with a shimmering affect. I have been to the macintosh shop where I live and they don't know!. I have put this on Mac help pages in the USA and Spain still now help or comments, surely someone must have an idea as to why this is going on or is it through bad design of software!!??. regards to all. Kevin

Hi Matti. Thanks for your work and help you are giving to me and others. I have printed off your info and will try and get my poor old brain round it!. So many people are having the same problem with iMovie it's amazing that the mac software dept has no don anything to rectify this bug and or problem. I have downloaded the software you state "Photo to Movie" but it does not seem to have the same things as iMovie with all the fancy transitions of images and music in the background, I have tried 4 images in this software and thay come up on full screen as 100% perfect, I still have to work out how to get them onto DVD with some kind of presentation. I want to start in the field of wedding photography and need some high end presentation software for digital wedding albums or Imaging with transitin affects, what would you recomend?. I am in spain so we are on PAL here, I think!. I have people over here in the Spanish Mac forums asking about the same problems, is it OK with you to translate some of yours and pass over to them in Spanish?. best regards. Kevin

  • HT201335 Airplay Mirror Poor Image Quality on CBS app - help?

Airplay mirror from iMac/iPad to HD TV w/Apple TV has a Poor Image Quality when watching network shows via for example the CBS.com site or the CBS app. The image looks dark, not HD at all. My internet speed/performance is obviously not the issue because Hulu, Netflix etc all come in great using Apple TV ~ sorry, not all that savvy in this department, is the poor picture down to it just being a mirror of the iMac or iPad or is there a setting or something I am missing?

You should use the Acrobat extra menu in word 2010: then edit Preferences and choose Conversion settings : High quality print
    Hope it helps

  • Aperture Light Table - Poor image quality

I am using the Light Table function in Aperture (3.4.5.) and I had an issue with the quality of the images on it, when zoomed in or scaled to fit.
The quality of the (larger spread) images looks poor. As if I zoomed in on a thumbnail.
I was looking for a discussion on this and saw some (archived) threads. None of them solved.
However, I think I have found a workaround.
If you get this situation, you can select the image(s) on the light table and regenerate the preview.
    Option-click Menu => Photos => Generate Previews
(note: if you don't use the Option key, you will get Menu => Photos => Update Previews and Aperture may say (unjust) that the preview is already up-to-date).
That solves the poor image quality look.

I just remade the same book - as a test - in the extra large hardback format (ie. the one I used for the previous publication, last year).
This time, the pictures are fine.  The images appear to be the same quality in the PDF as the originals - much, much better.  The size of the file has increased massively too > up from just 2.6MB to 52.8MB.
So does the books production function work well only with the biggest, most expensive option?
I'd really appreciate some feedback from anyone who's tried the different sizes, and preferably some brilliant ideas to make them all work equally well.

  • Poor image quality save for web

It doesn't matter whether i'm exporting from Ai or Ps or whether it's CS6 or CC. I have changed the raster settings in Ai and i've also tried all optimization options with all different export file types (jpg, png, gif) at all different quality settings. It doesn't matter if I start with an ai, eps, pdf, png... the export result is always poor quality.
I have tried exporting at 300ppi and that does fix the quality issue and bloats the file size, but this way (the export route) is so time consuming since you have to resize your artwork each time as well as the artboard so that it doesn't cut off pixels. Save for web never used to have these quality issues and it also never used to cut off pixels around the edges. These workarounds prove very time consuming and produce file sizes that are not ideal.
When i first noticed this issue I was using Mavericks with CS6 and since am using Yosemite and Creative Cloud.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Create any bitmap or vector graphic in Ai or Ps, It doesn't matter whether you convert text to outlines or not
    2. Save for web
    3. View image in any application or browser to see poor quality and pixel trimming. Others running the same version and system are not having this issue, but I have checked many forums and found many others that do have this same issue but can't seem to find a solution.
Results:stair stepping, degradation, pixel trimming, general poor image quality
Expected results: Previously the save for web feature allowed for a decent quality image

First try the Cleaner. here's the link for CC but there exists one for Cs6 as well Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Everything I have read says that you kind of have to compromise file-size for quality. Could you post a screenshot of your settings?

I thought of that too so I tested on another machine with retina display and the file i saved on my machine looked bad on my machine and on the other comparable machine/display. So I sent them the original vector ai file and watched while they saved it the exact same way on their machine and the file looked fine on both of our machines/displays.
All of the settings they used appeared the same as what I used but with different results. I don't recall changing anything but does anyone know if there is some setting that could have been changed that is causing this issue?

  • Cannot creat idvd from imovie

pls. assist cannot create idvd from imovie project as it hangs the application on the point of renderring audio files...
what is whrong had been done whithin imovie project then?

My personal worst was a 1 hr 50 min video with 14 imported music clips. Took 42 hours to render, but it got there in the end!
Oh, then 24 hours isn't so bad :-|
What kind of audio files did you use then? I guess it shouldn't make a difference because iMovie converts them to AIF. What sample rate did they use -- 44.1 or 48 kHz? iMovie should convert them to 48 kHz but I haven't checked how well iMovie behaves with imported audio.
Maybe iDVD chokes with overlapping audio clips or when resampling them??
I hope the quality testing of iLife 07 is any better. iMovie 2.1.2 is the last well behaving version!

  • Really poor image quality when watching DVDs

    Hi,
I was just wondering whether anybody else has experienced really poor image quality whilst watching DVDs on their MacBook? For me, the image is really grainy or blurry. I am pretty sure it cannot be the DVDs as this problem is happening with every film I watch!
Is this a common problem? What can be done (if anything) to resolve this?
    Many thanks,
    John

    Hi John,
open system preference>display, and check if your color depth is in millions color.
try other dvd player like VLC for mac:
    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html
    Good Luck.

  • Is there a way to change clip size without losing image quality? Specifically from 568 x 320 to 1920 x 1080?

Is there a way to change clip size without losing image quality? Specifically, from 568 x 320 to 1920 x 1080?

No, especially not video files. That's way too much scaling.

  • Poor Image quality/Slideshow/iMovie to iDVD

I placed about 150 jpegs as clips in iMovie HD (v.5.0.2). I made them all 3.25 seconds long and gave them all a short overlap transition. I set them to music and exported to iDVD (v.5.0.1). Once the DVD was burned, I viewed it with disappointment. Briefly, during the transitions the images are of great quality. But the actual image clips are very poor quality. I'm new to this and I find all the many options for making quicktime movies a little overwhelming. But, exporting to iDVD doesn't have any options. I thought it was supposed to maintain the quality.
What did I do wrong or what can I do right?

    Karl Peterson said,
"If there are unrendered clips in the Timeline when we tell iMovie to Share (Export) a project to iDVD, iMovie will ask permission to render those clips. (Rendering converts the clips to video clips.)
These may include still photos, photos imported with the Ken Burns checkbox turned OFF. Photos imported with the Ken Burns checkbox ON are rendered by Ken Burns; iMovie won't ask to render them again.
If we grant permission to render clips, iMovie will render them with very poor quality, adding lots of "jaggies" to the photos. It's a bug.
To avoid the bug, do NOT grant permission to render when iMovie asks. Then iDVD will render them for us, which it does with good quality.
So, to avoid the bug do any ONE of these:
    1. Import all photos with the Ken Burns checkbox ON.
    2. If iMovie asks permission to render when exporting the project, do NOT grant permission.
    3. Instead of sharing from iMovie to iDVD, drop the iMovie project into the iDVD project window.
    Karl"

  • Poor image quality using iMovie 8 or iDVD after importing DV file via FW

    Hello,
i am a complete newby and asking for help. I have bought a Panasonic NV-GS320EG-S miniDV Camcorder. First i connected it via S-Video to my Pioneer Plasma which worked fine.
I have connected the camcorder via Firewire to my iMac 20/2,4 GHz, camcorder will launch import window, streaming works but in iMovie the image quality is already rather poor. I can cut files and all but after using Import film and burning it with latest Toast, picture quality is even worse, that means colors are natural but no sharpness, lots of shivering lines as soon as the angle is moving.
I've tried to import directly into iDVD with the direct transfer function for Firewire which works technically as well but the result is mainly the same, when i burn the DVD the picture quality gets far worse than via S-Video connection.
Last thing i tried is importing to iMovie, importing for media browser and reopening file in iDVD which burns the DVD later, all that works technically fine, but the image result remains absolutely poor, my wife meant inacceptable...
Any ideas what that could be??? I've always imported and exported the film with the largest picture mode possible...

I am using the Panasonic HDC-SD5 camcorder which records in AVCHD.
I also have a JVC miniDV camcorder.
The following is available in iMovie 08 help:If the larger sizes are not available, the original project media isn’t large enough to render in that size. The largest media size used in the project determines the final movie sizes you can render.
Tiny: Always 176 by 144 pixels.
Mobile: Always 480 by 272 pixels.
Medium: Varies in size from 640 by 480 pixels (standard aspect ratio) to 640 by 360 pixels (widescreen), depending on the size of the media in your project.
Large: Always 960 by 540 pixels (widescreen). No large size is rendered if your original video isn’t high definition (HD).
