Poor Internet Performance compared to PC

Internet speed tests running under 10.4.4 are underperforming the same tests running on my PC underXP Pro, Both are coonected to the same network in my home? The results are the same with or without broadband tuner. Any thoughts?

  • Poor Internet performance (ping, download, and upload) even wired directly to modem

I recently purchased a new iMac running OSX 10.8, and have been noticing exteremely poor internet performance compared to what I am used to with our internet connection.  Running speedtests, I typically get results as follows:
    Ping: 500-2500ms
    Download: 2-3Mbps
    Upload: 0.05-0.1Mbps
There more or less reflect the way web browsing feel.  It takes forever for clicks to take effect, but content loading on pages is reasonable for most lightweight pages.  As a comparison, running the same test on my Win 7 Dell laptop, I get more or less the advertised limits of my internet package:
    Ping: 20-80ms
    Download: 18-15Mbps
    Upload: 0.4-0.6Mbps
To troubleshoot the issue, I wanted to ensure it was not the wireless connection or the router, so I disconnected the router and run an ethernet cord directly from the iMac to the router, and I got the same results.  I then disconnected the router entirely and ran the cord directly to the cable modem, and again got the same results.  Questioning whether it was an issue with the browser, I downloaded Chrome and again ran the test, only to get the same results.
Now I feel stuck.  I know there is no issue with the cable modem or the connection coming to our home, but have no idea how to improve the performance of the computer.  I would appreciate some tricks or tips to try and improve the performance on either a wired ethernet connection, or ideally on wireless.
    Thanks in advance.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • Poor Internet Performance on my new iMac Intel Duo

    Hi,
Just purchased a new iMac Intel 20" intel dual-core. My internet performance stinks. I have a Windows laptop sitting right next to it, plugged into the same ethernet switch, and it gets twice the performance of the Mac. I measured this using the Verizon Fios speed test. Additionally, web-pages load noticeably faster on the windows machine than on the Mac.
I have the problem whether I'm using Firefox, Safari or Internet explorer.
I have both machines plugged into a 100BaseT ethernet switch.
I'm very frustrated, and tempted to return the blasted thing.
Any ideas, RTFM's or configuration options will be appreciated.

Me too MIchael. My PC (right next to my iMac Intel) is getting 10 meg dl speed; mac only gets 5 (at best).
Direct connect from cable modem to Mac yields 7 or 8 , direct connect from cable modem to PC yields 10 megs.
PC gets 10 dl speed even thru a router; Mac can't get past the 5 mark.
I'd really like to know what's up with this.
ISP and Router Manufacturer are no help.
    Any ideas guys?

  • Extremely poor internet performance 1841

    **Edit**
To add more to this,  somehow I missed it but I had quite a few CRC errors on the outside interface.  I switched the FastEthernet0/0 to speed auto, duplex auto and now I am getting about 45Mbps download speed.  I would still like to see the router get closer to 60 though,  is there anything I could tweak in the config that might increase the speed of this just a little bit?  Or is an 1841 only rated to about 45Mbps with all the firewall features turned on?
    **End Edit**
A school I am doing some volunteer work for has a 60/4 coax internet service through Charter communication.  I just put in an older Cisco 1841 router and used my default standard config I use at many other sites.  For some reason I am only getting about 6 - 8 mbps download speeds with the router.  When I plug directly into the cable modem with my laptop I am getting the advertised speeds.
Attached is my config, it looks pretty standard to me and for the life of me I can not see why this router would be performing so poorly.  The CPU utilization is very low,  I have to be missing something though.
    Thank you everyone

I'm having the same issue with the 1841 I get about 12Megbit were I can get over 20 connected with a cheap old linksys router. If you look at the processor it's pegged at 100% after doing some research I found the 1841 has a slow CPU it's max is only 38meg that's not even natting. I assume when you nat the CPU is maxed out.  My IP input shows 70% while downloading a 500meg file. I'm going to try an ASA5200

  • Macbook Pro 11,2 tests very poor WiFi performance compared to iPad

    Configuration:
    MBP 11,2 running 10.10.1
    Airport Express 2014 vintage
WiFi Scanner.app speed test results on MBP range from 1 to 3 Mbps. My iPad Air (or iPad Mini) in the same physical position tests between 18 and 28 Mbps. WiFi Scanner.app shows SNR of 17 to 18 dbm.
The reason I am testing is because I have noticed network performance on the new MBP to be very poor in our current NZ location. In Palo Alto 2 weeks ago the MBP wifi seemed fine - I didn't bother to test.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

  • The Official OS X Annoyance Thread: Slow Internet Performances

    Hi!
It seems that there's a lot of people with poor internet performance out there. I'm surely not alone. And we already crawled every **** google page about it. I tried EVERY solution. The 4.2.2.1 trick, opendns, a lot of different stuff and nothing worked. Nothing!
But it seems that my case is the worst: I'm not limited to 500kb/s. I'm limited to something like 5kb/s!!!
I just have to boot on windows XP and I can fully use my connection. Every computer in the house is running fine so it is NOT the router. (The router is using openDNS as well).
So I would like to ask you people, to try to find a solution <Edited by Moderator>. Because it is a real pain the the *!
I have a Macbook (Early 2006). With the latest updates. So it should not be a problem... Please do something, it's been over a month since I began trying every tip that has been given to me on forums.
Thanks a lot for your help!

Does the router have the very latest firmware? Many routers work well with Tiger and earlier versions of Leopard and PCs, but not with the latest versions of Leopard unless they have the latest firmware updates.

  • Poor graphics performance.

    Hi.
Include your product name and specs such as processor speed, memory, and storage capacity. Please do not include your Serial Number, IMEI, MEID, or other personal information.
    Macbook Pro retina (early 2013)
    2.7 GHz Intel Core I7
    16GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    512 GB SSD
Provide the version numbers of your operating system and relevant applications, for example "iOS 6.0.3" or "iPhoto 9.1.2".
    OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)
Describe the problem, and include any details about what seems to cause it.
My rMBP has poor graphical performance compared to other rMBP. I think there might be something wrong inside it. Appstore or Steam games for Mac  (Bioshock Inf and Max Payne 3) at lowest graphical settings will give me between 5-10FPS. I think this might be weird for such a well specced computer.
List any troubleshooting steps you've already tried, or temporary fixes you've discovered.
Formatting, bootcamp with Win7, Updating to mavericks, stopping apps, Reset SMC.
Nothing has worked yet. I don't play games often, but since i first started trying a few times last year, i've noticed that it's almost impossible,

You should be getting more FPS. Do you have switched graphic card option on or off in the energy saving section?

  • Poor internet wifi performance

After iOS update internet performance on iPad4 has become very poor, to the point of being unacceptable, ( taking 10mins to get to this point).
    SOlutions anybody?!

Hi Go to Settings Reset Network Settings on iPad After Reset you need to enter your Router wireless key Also turn Router off for 30 seconds Also an option go on website for your make of Router check for a Firmware upgrade. Cheers Brian

  • I have recently upgraded my ipad mini to iOS 6.0.2 and still have poor wifi performance. My 3rd generation ipad works great on the same network. I have done all the resets I can think of but nothing helps. I would not have purchased the mini had I known.

On the same wifi network, third generation ipad, iphone4s and MacBook Pro work just fine.  The ipad mini often can not connect with the mail server and seems to hang a long time trying to open a web page. Had I known the mini had this kind of difficulty on wifi, I would have reconsidered my purchase. I have tried resetting the network and renewing the lease on the mini in addition. To completing the most current iOS upgrade. Still poor wifi performance. Unacceptable, in my opinion.

Yes I tried this manyfold. But did not work.  Reading on, I took Tesserac's advice. Shut down router and computer.
Start router after 15 minutes and wait another 10 minutes before starting the computer.
Et voila.... everything is back in working order,
    Regards form Curacao, Dutch Caribean.

Today arrived new version (6.12.99) of ATI OSS driver (also new version of ati-dri 7.6, mesa 7.6 and xorg-server 1.7.1) Since that moment I'm experiencing poor 2D performance, especially in GIMP (scrooling of zoomed canvas). Also switching of virt. desktop where is bloated Java app. or fat Firefox instance result in poor render of screen (program renders by parts/semiwindows).

BTW I'm not using Compiz. Has anyone an idea what could happen? In Glxgears I'm achieving 1200fps, but working with GIMP is laggy-horror.

  • BW performance comparation between BI versions

    Dear all,
I have found very good high level documentaion regarding performance comparation between BI versions on SAP ServiceMarketPlace. However, I only got 2.1c vs 3.1 and NTW2004 (3.5)vs NTW2004s (7.0).

I am interested in similar documentation3.1 vs NTW2004 (3.5). Can anyome indicate me where can I find it?
    Tx in advance

  • Poor Bluetooth performance with all aluminum Mac Pro

The all aluminum case for pre-mavericks Mac Pro is the primary reason for poor antenna performance of Bluetooth. Aluminum, being a good conductor, acts as a reflector of EMF forming what is known as a Faraday Cage, essentially trapping emissions within the box. Normally, holes drilled in the case would allow enough EMF to pass through the case but the hole size for transmission is directly proportional to the lowest frequency that will pass through easily. An example is the typical microwave oven where the window is actually a conducting sheet with small enough hole such that higher freq light waves pass easily through the sheet but lower frequency microwaves do not. Perhaps if the drive bay covers were made of plastic, transmission of the Bluetooth and wifi would be sufficient. One might carefully nibble a slot or two in the side door but this would surely invalidate any warranty and care would have to be taken not to get aluminum particles inside the computer. This would probably nullify any FCC approval of the machine due to clocking noise interference with other devices. The best approach would probably be a tuned waveguide that passes frequencies only around 2.4 GHz ~ 5 GHz through the case (very similar to the way tuned ports on audio speakers pass a band of frequencies needed to extend bass response). I'm sure Apple will have corrected this design flaw in the new Mac Pro introduced this year. If you have lots of time on your hands you can get a college level text on electromagnetics (Maxwell's Equations, etc.) and derive all the details but with a bit of experimenting and reading about tin can antenna mods to wireless routers you should be able to improve Bluetooth performance significantly.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I will have to move my wireless home base station.  It is on the same desk as my mini so much less than 5 feet away.

  • Poor 3G performance from Hutchinson 3 Service Provide at HK

any Hong Kong 3G iphone users experiencing poor 3G performance on Hutchinson 3 network? test my 3G iphone against original EDGE iphone at same spot on office floor, browsing to www.yahoo.com and the performance was marginally quicker than EDGE. after calling our service provide, being told that we were capped on network bandwidth of 7.2mbps but the real speed testing was around 0.3mbps.... this is unacceptable performance.
Apple - please speak to vendor, this is making your product look BAD.

  • My new Ipad camera takes poor picture quality compare to my iphone 4g. Is it should be so?

My new Ipad camera takes poor picture quality compare to my iphone 4g. Is it should be so?

    Hi pjl,
Yes I forgot to mention, the iPad does lose the tether when it sleeps, so I turned sleep off permanently which is probably not great for battery life either!
I just don't understand why another iPhone4 can connect to the personal hotspot with absolutely no intervention once it knows the password. That's how it should be on the iPad. They are both running the latest iOS5 so why any difference?
