Poor internet speed over airport

my daughters 20 in ch 1.8 Ghz iMac G5 is incredibly slow over airport.  It has the built in aircard and is running off a Linksys B/G router.  it is the only machine pulling from that router most of time, sometimes the Wii runs off that router.  The connection is usually 3-4 bars, but the speed is miserable.  The aircard only sees 3 networks, however sitting my MacBook next to it, I can pick up 7-8 networks (3 are in our house.)
Is the reception just generally this bad on an iMac? Anything I can do to help it?  wrap it in aluminum foil...

That only works if you attach the rabbit ears antenna.

  • Poor internet speed over wireless

We just signed up for a new ADSL2+ plan, and received a wireless router along with it (an Open Networks iConnect Access 624W), which came pre-configured for our ISP (Internode).
My housemate (who has a 17" iMac G5), had no problems finding the router and is getting around 1.5MB down a second. I, on the other hand am getting anywhere from 130kB a second, down to 0. It's slow, and very very patchy. And it's getting worse. (this morning, I struggled to download a 700kb file).
I tried to re-setup the airport settings multiple times to no avail. I've checked to see I've run all software updates (I have).
It's weird, it's not like it isn't connecting. I can at least bring up something, albiet very slowly, and I can see the other iMac via bonjour. I just can't get the same internet performance.
The router is placed pretty much dead centre between the two iMacs too (just in the hall between the rooms). Can't be more than 3m away from the computer.
Is there anything I can do to narrow down the issue?
Could there be something wrong with my Airport Extreme card?
    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to the discussions!
It certainly is possible that there is a hardware problem, but it is more likely that it is in the settings somewhere. Have you checked to see that the settings in the two Macs match? I would make sure that Airport is listed first in the connections and also be sure to have IPv6 turned off. Those are two things that I have found can make a difference in the performance.

  • Poor internet connection over wireless router

We have a modem and wireless router setup in our house. The PC Laptop connects wirelessly and gets a fair internet speed. The Mac Laptop on wireless however gets a very very poor internet speed over the network. Any ideas why this is so?
The speed increases a bit when I hook the mac laptop directly up to the modem via cable, but the wireless is the problem...
    thx

    lots of questions need answers.
    name of provider?
    the speed you signed for?
    cable or DSL or ?
    modem is older or not?
    firmware update required?
    router model?

  • Poor Internet speed, TC 535kbps but through WAG300N 6654kbps

Ok so I took the plunge and purchased a new TC 1TB yesterday and after going through the Airport Utility setup process everything seems to be working apart from the very poor internet speed when connecting via the TC > WAG300N.
    Linksys WAG300N Download-6654kbps / Upload-355kbps
    Apple Time Capsule Download-535kbps / Upload-348kbps

    Connect Using: Ethernet
Ethernet WAN Port: Automatic (Default) +*I have tried all the options with this setting*+
Connection Sharing: Share a public IP address +*I have also tried the "Off (Bridge Mode) setting*+
    TCP/IP
IP Address: I have set manual
Router address: Points to my WAG300N
DNS Server(s): This is set to my WAG300N +*I have tried the DNS addresses from my ISP which still result in the 535kbps Download speed*+
I have tried different Cat cables and different ethernet slots from the TC WAN to the WAG300N, I have also connected my MacBook with an ethernet cable directly to the TC. The hardwired connection still gave me the same speed test results.
I hope I have listed all the information that someone might need to help me out. If you need any further details just shout and I will post them.
One last thing, could this be a faulty Time Capsule?

    Good News
I borrowed my father-in-law's old 3COM modem/router to test out my feeling that the ethernet ports on my WAG300N were not playing ball.
I'm now a very happy bunny! setting the 3COM in Bridge Mode and using PPPoE on the Time Capsule I have my MacBook and iPhone the wife's XP laptop and BlackBerry all running through the Time Capsule
My speeds are now as they should be:

  • Poor internet speed getting slower

The area i live in has a very poor internet speed however in the last couple of months it has got significantly slower, where web pages arent evening loading and streaming is getting near impossible
BT call centre suggested leaving it an hour, then a day then a few days and they would 'fix' something. No change ever happens after these calls and leaving the internet unused for days at a time is getting unacceptable

  • Poor internet speed with time capsule or Airport extreme

I'm trying to find away to increase the throughput of my 1st generation tme capsule. i'm getting a 33% drop in speed over wireless compared to wired conncetions.
    current setup
Virginmedia XXL broadband  100Mbit down  5Mbit up.
Modem standard virginmedia modem (not the superhub) connected to Apple time capsule (500Mb) @ 1000Mbit full duplex
time capsule reset to default and then configured to use 5Ghz band, channel 36 . (no other networks in the area using this band) tested using wifi scanner and istumbler
    tested down/up speed using www.vmspeed.com
    wired connection
    105Mb/sec download   4.9Mb/sec upload
    wireless connection
    73.14Mb/sec download   4.7Mb/sec upload
i have tried testing with an airport extreme 3rd Gen with the same setup and get the same results.
Tested using a 2008 Macbook running Lion 10.7.3 and also tested using 2010 Macbook unibody running snow leopard 10.6.8. both laptops connecting to wireless network at 270Mb/sec and are both exhibiting the same drop in speed over wireless. only one laptop connected to the network at a time.
is thier a limit to the time capsule/airport extreme wireless throughput?

    Further to Bob's comments..
A Gen1 TC will be using marvel wireless chip and your 2008 and 2010 Macbook will use atheros and/or broadcom cards.. Just open your system profiler and look for info on the airport. We find the mixture of wireless chipsets especially older draft N and later N products can give very varied results.
The very fact you are linking at 270 and not 300mbps shows some reduction from theoretical max speed.. and really to get over 100mbps with any wireless you need perfect setup.. matched wireless chips etc.
Do a test uploading and downloading a file to the TC to see if the LAN speed is better than internet speed.
In reality I think you are doing especially well.. we see loads of people complaining about slow internet here who are getting less than 10% of the speed they get direct when routed through the TC. And on most occasions the limit in speed is not really going to affect what you do, as the real links to the internet are not that fast.

  • MBP C2D internet sharing over Airport

I have DSL connected to my MBP C2D over ethernet and want share this connection over the MBP Airport so other computers can wirelessly access the internet. While other computers can see and connect to the shared Airport connection on the MBP, however there is no internet available. I suspect this is because the MBP C2D is using 802.11N frequency and my other computers are G. How can I force the MBP to transmit in G?
    Thanks

Whatever the problem is, it is certainly not related to the G or N standard.
Do you have "Personal Web Sharing" enabled under System Preferences-Sharing-Services? If not - try it.
Under System Preferences - Sharing - Internet review the "Airport Options...", some network names (containing special characters) and encryption settings (40-bit WEP with 5 char password or 128-bit WEP with 13 char password are normally most compatible) can cause problems. On some Windows systems you will need to set the Gateway and DNS IP addresses for the connection manually to point to the shared computer's IP address for Internet functionality to work flawlessly).

  • Problems sharing internet connection over airport

    Hi everyone-
I've researched the heck out of the forums and still cant figure out what's happening with my system. I've got a MacBook Pro with OS 10.5.2. In previous OS versions (10.4) when I was successfully sharing my ethernet internet connection, the airport icon in the status bar showed a vertical "up" arrow, indicating that my connection was being shared.
I'm trying to do the same thing in OS 10.5.2 but not succeeding in getting the same notification. I'm finding that when I access the "Sharing" folder under "System Preferences" and select "Share your internet connection from: ethernet" and "To computers using: Airport" that both settings grey out, the "Internet Sharing" button turns green and the status says "On", but no sharing occurs. I've checked using other wireless laptops and a wifi finder, but no signal from my MacBook is ever found.
I've deleted my preferences folder to start fresh, no help. I've tried sharing from different ethernet sources, no help. It just feels like the problem is in the OS somewhere, not with the internet connection.
Any insight or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

seems like i got the same issue as u and i just posted it:

  • Internet speed over wifi seems to be extremely slow and downloads go up till 50kb/s max but on the computer they go up till 600kb/s

As i said in the title, my net speed over the speed seems to be extremely slow. I had my adsl upgraded recently from 2mbits/s to 5mbits/s but when i had 2mbits/s the speed seemed to be fine and after the upgrade downloads just dropped down to 5-50kb/s when its supposed to be arround 300-600 kb/s. Is it a problem with my router or something to do with the iPod? Please help.

Sorry, but yeah im using wi-fi. WPA2-PSK security and radio type: 802.11g
The 802.11g standard for wireless networking supports a maximum bandwidth of 54 Megabits per second (Mbps).
That does NOT mean that the average throughput will reach 54 Mb/s. The "speed" terminus is merely used to describe the bandwidth of a connection, not its actual speed.
The common units are Kbit/s, Mbit/s and Gbit/s
The actual useful data exchanged on 802.11g networks will always occur at lower rates than 54 Mbps.
The 300 to 450 Mbit/sek bandwidth you will only get on a 5 GHz 811.n network with MIMO and (for the 450 speed) at least 3 antennas in your receiving unit.
But, as you described, the connection slowes down while transfering data, especially on your iPad.
This (except for a usual up and down fading) indicates, that there is either a bottleneck in your network or additional (unwanted) traffic on the net.
First to think on is, that Bluetooth and 811.g uses the same frequency and may interference.
First steps to do will be, following the troubleshoot as described under the link below.

  • Poor internet speeds, unacceptable?

Hello I have been a sky customer for many years but in the past 6 months I have almost un-usable internet connection. I would like to play my games consoles, pc and stream movies online aswell  as using RFID to communicate with friends but I cant with my internet speeds?I am getting on average:Ping: 50ms Download Speed: 8mbpsUpload Speed: 0.6mbps (Wired and Wireless)Also the internet connection drops 1-2 times per day...Despite trying all 13 WAP channels and moving the router to many places around the house i still have had no luck - I am now using a 3m ethernet cable from the microfilter to get better connection on my devices.I was wondering if anyone could help me resolve these issues as these are not the speeds I promised, is it something that can be fixed or do I require a sky engineer? Also I am using the most up-to-date hardware as provided by sky

The speeds you should be seeing are as I put in my last post; it should be around 10Mbps download and around 0.7Mbps upload based on your connection stats.
With regard to iCloud/Google backups, it would only need one device to start backing up photos or music, for example, to saturate that 0.7Mbps upload speed. This, in turn, would affect the download speed for all devices as they need to be able to send packets of information as well as receive them.
First thing I'd suggest is that, next time it happens, have a quick check of the iPad and any Android devices and make sure they aren't backing up. If they are, disconnect them and see if things improve.
If the issue persists, you'll need to contact Sky via the channels below to report the fault.

  • Poor internet speeds in Singapore

    Hi all
We have a vpn to a site in Singapore, we experience slow speeds and even dropouts sometimes at certain times of the day!
Is the internet in Singapore well known for being slow, Is there a high contention ratio or something ?
    cheers

    Carl,
Singapore is an IT "power house" of Asia.   You will need to look closely at your router, line errors, load, etc.  SingTel technicians are very good.

  • Poor Laptop Speed Over Wifi HH5

Got my Infinity 2 installed and getting 74mbps on my desktop over Lan and 70mbps on my android phone on wifi. However my laptop is woeful at 7mbps 5 feet from the router. I have tried changing the ssid to seperate names, I have turned off smart set up and none of this changes the speed. My network card is a realtek 802.11n pci-e nic and windows and slimdrivers tell me the drivers are up to date.
When I look within the network and sharing, connections say signal quality has 5 full bars and speed 72mbps.
Any help or further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

Is it possible that you are confusing Megabits (Mb) with Megabytes (MB)
It is often assumed that a download speed of 1 Megabit per second (1 Mbps) will allow them to download a 1 Megabyte file in one second. This is not the case, a Megabit is 1/8 as big as a Megabyte, meaning that to download a 1MB file in 1 second you would need a connection of 8Mbps.
If it is confusion between the two it would mean that you are actually getting 56Mbps.
Use this speed tester to see the result in Mbps.

  • Slow Internet Speeds with Airport Extreme

I am noticing a dramatic slow down with my Airport Extreme. However, I have noticed this is an intermittent issue. Here are the specs of what I am running:
    • Airport Extreme Base station that is plugged into a cable modem. The AEBS is routing the IP addresses.
    • Plugged into the AEBS is an 800mhz iMac that is hardwired in. No slow down is noted on this computer.
    • MacBook (Less than 2 months old) is connected to the AEBS wirelessly.
    • iPhone is connected to the AEBS wirelessly.
Where I am having the problems is with the MacBook. I will have full signal strength and yet it takes for ever to load a page. Plus sometimes the connection will time out. As stated above this is an intermittent issue. Sometimes everything works fine, other times the connection has issues. All pieces of equipment are running the latest firmware. Does anyone have any suggestions to solve this issue?

I would recommend changing the wireless channel of the Extreme.
Open Airport Utility, and select Manual Setup. Note on the summary page what the channel is set to, most often it will be set to channel 6 (Automatic), but it could be anything between 1-11.
Goto the Wireless tab and adjust the channel so it several channels apart from the current one. If it is on channel 6, I recommend channel 1 or 11.

  • 10.4.9 and internet speed

I am being told by my internet provider (charter) that they are getting many calls about poor internet speed w/ mac users after the 10.4.9 upgrade. my internet speed are really back after the upgrade. has anyone heard of this and if so how to fix it?

A few things to try, with no guarantees:
    * Visit sites such as http://www.macfixit.com and http://www.macintouch.com to see if others have reported the problem and/or workarounds/fixes.
    * Run Disk Utility and "fix permissions", and "verify disk".
    * Run Activity Monitor and see if any obvious culprits are shown - CPU utilization way too high, constant disk activity, constant paging, unexplained network activity (or lack of it), etc.
    * Download and install the "combo" 10.4.9 updater.
    * If you know what to look for, look at the network settings and see if they make sense.
    * Do you have a PC or a Mac running 10.4.8 to use as a control sample?

  • Can't play over airport

Windows XP / Itunes 6.05 / Airport Express
I have a mac and a PC networked via Airport express. I want iTunes on the PC to play over airport to my sound system like it does on my mac (Powerbook 17" / 10.3.9). I can't however get iTunes on the PC to show the menu for selecting the airport speakers, even when I set it to in preferences. The PC otherwise sees the internet fine over airport. I do have difficulty networking the two computers together however.
    Chris

embedded, i believe. (the big change between 5.0.0.35 and 5.0.1.4 was to reincorporate Bonjour into itunes, like it was with 4.9 ... i haven't heard of any changes in that regard since then, and there hasn't been a separate Bonjour component in the versions since then.
my standard next thing with these (if the documents don't help) is "run away screaming for help from RJ in WI or iFelix" ...
