Poor iTunes Playback Quality (Stuttering/Scratching)

Hi everyone,
I've been using iTunes for a long time (a couple years I think), and I just started having this problem. Basically, sometimes (not always) the quality of the sound of the songs that I am listening to will suddenly become horrible. It'll stutter and have weird, static-like noises in the background, and although the song will be discernible, it's not really a lot of fun to listen to.
The songs I've been listening to lately that have had this problem all used to work properly (a couple days ago), but then all of a sudden yesterday this started happening. I think that all of the songs on my computer are susceptible, and I have had problems with listening to music in other, non-Apple products that I have tried briefly, too (e.g., WinAMP.) And of course, even if it was just iTunes, I prefer it over other music programs , so I would hate to have to switch either way.
I notice one thing that makes the problem much worse is if I open Windows Media player.
I also have one other idea about what could have caused it...I program in C++ somewhat often (I'm a computer science major in college), and I had one program that I was working on that had a lot of null pointer errors and other such problems relating to pointers...could it be that I have somehow messed up (or failed to deallocate) some of the memory of my computer and that it doesn't have the resources to run iTunes? (A lot of other things on my computer have seemed to be running more slowly...could it be a virus? I have anti-virus software....)
Oh, also, I did read through all the articles I could find on this subject in the help database. I upgraded to the latest version of iTunes and QuickTime, and changed the QuickTime settings to waveOut only. I also restarted my computer a few times since the problem started, ran SpyBot Search and Destroy, and tried to update my drivers (although I couldn't figure out how to do that, the instructions provided on the site didn't seem to work.)
Anyway, I'm stumped. Any help anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Ok, thanks for the suggestion...I actually read what you wrote to another poster and started running an ewido scan about half an hour ago, haha. It's still running actually...about 2/3 of the way done.
And yes I've seen that article, and I tried everything there except for the drivers stuff.
So far it has found about 273 things on my computer, which is interesting because I had just run SpyBot. I guess ewido covers some territory that SpyBot does not eh? Thanks for the tip, I'll have to add ewido to my arsenal of virus-fighting software .
Thanks for all the help, I'll post again after the scan is finished if I have more problems.

  • Poor CD playback quality with iTunes 7.2.0.35.

When I play CDs using iTunes the playback is very poor. There are popping sounds that are really annoying. There may also be a slight distortion.
The playback on Windows Media player is fine and the playback with Ubuntu (dual boot) sounds good as well.
Importing from CD works fine. The playback quality is good.
Why is iTunes CD playback quality so poor?
    Thanks,

  • CK-200 poor music playback quality

Hi, I've just installed the car kit CK-200 (ISO cable version) into my car and I'm very disappointed by the music playback quality.
I have Nokia C7 with the latest firmware (14.002) and I have also updated the car kit firmware into 3.0.
There's no problem with the phone call quality - I would say it is comparable to the other car kits (for example to CK-7W I've had before), but if I want to use it for playing music, it still plays it in "phone call-like" quality. I have tried different players, but no success - still the same low quality.
If I turn the FM transmitter on and tune up the car radio to the transmitters' frequency, I get much better quality then via this car kit (although sometimes it's noisy from other broadcasting radios).
In the product description of this CK-200 they highlight very good sound quality thanks to some DSP technology - I hope there's more than this.
Do you have any idea what might be the problem here?

    Hi
The CK-200 is a mono output car kit that is only designed for calls, not music.
If a handset is playing music via the mono Bluetooth channel, this is a fluke, and not part of the design of the handset.
The CK-100, 300, 600 are all stereo car kits with music capability.
The DSP settings on the CK-200 manage the voice vs background noise in the car so the driver can be heard more clearly by the other caller.

  • Poor iTunes playback on HP MIni 110-1125NR

Has anyone found a solution to the playback problems using iTunes on a the HP Mini netbooks?
I've gone to both HP and Microsoft downloading any and all plug-ins/updates that relate to audio/video playback/acceleration. I continue to get lag, stuttering, and pausing when I listen to music or watch tv/movies downloaded from iTunes. Interestingly, music burned from a CD seems to playback without problem.
    Thanks

  • Poor iTunes video quality

    Hi,
I just purchased an episode of Lost through iTunes because I missed the original airing on TV. When I try to play back the video on my iMac, the quality is garbage. The video is jerky, stops, and when it does run, it runs at about 10 frames per second.
It does this while in full screen mode, and also when running in windowed-mode.
There are no other applications running in the background, not even Dashboard is loaded up. I've tried repairing permissions and re-starting the computer. iTunes videos play back fine on my Mac Mini, but for the purpose of this Lost video, it needs to play back on the iMac.
I downloaded the 7.0.2 iTunes update (it was on 7.0.1), hoping it would eliminate this issue, but if anything it's worse since the update.
Any suggestions to make the video play back smooth? This computer has plenty of free hard drive space, and a gig of RAM. It's annoying that this computer cost what it did new, and now four years later can't play back a Quicktime video that I paid $1.99 for.
    Thanks,

    Macmenno,
    Thanks for the reply.
To be honest I didn't really look at the requirements for iTunes, I just assumed it would work haha. Thanks for pointing that out. I wouldn't think 200 MHz difference would cause it to run this poorly, but oh well.

  • Poor iTunes video quality on Vista PC

I have a new Windows Vista laptop, 1 g ram, 1.7 ghz processor and i realize the iTunes requirements for playing video says 2 ghz, but is there any way i can get my laptop to play smooth iTunes video such as memory or program upgraded?

I bet its iTunes and not your computer. iTunes seems to be junkware on Windows.

  • Poor DVD playback quality

Hi, I have an iBook G3 500 MHz w/ 256 MB Ram and a DVD-Rom. The drive will accept a CD or DVD fine, but when the program DVD Player opens to play the DVD, I just get a large black window on the screen. If I stop the playback, it will go to the title menu and sit there. If I use VLC to view the DVD, it will play the movie, but seems to be a bit skitterish. The OS is a new install of 10.3.9 BTW. Also, the sound doesn't work properly on the iBook with any application (the built in speakers). I tried an external set of speakers and they work fine, and also swapped out the built in speakers with a known good set and still nothing. Perhaps the two are related? I searched the archives and couldn't find any related threads..
Thanks in advance to all those who offer advice.
    ...Tom

Does the iBook still have its OS 9 startup volume? Go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and see if OS 9 is available. If it is, select it and start up in OS 9 and see if the speaker problem exists there, also. If so, it points to a hardware issue.
As for the DVD problems, try closing all other applications when trying to watch a DVD. Maximizing the RAM with a 512 MB RAM module may help. With the limited RAM, DVD's may play better in OS 9, as well.
How big is the hard drive and how much space remains available on it?

  • Exported iphoto slideshow to itune but playback quality is low

I am using Macbook air Early 2014. OS X 10.10.1
My question is I exported iphoto slideshow to itune but playback quality is low. I used 480P MP4 format. How I can improve this?
    Lo

    Hello!
My first question is pretty obvious:
    - is the quality great when previewing your slideshow in iPhoto?
    If so, try the following:
delete the bad slideshow from iTunes
go back to iPhoto and select a better quality export method, like 720p or 1080p
    Did that help?

  • Very poor iTunes quality

Every song i play through iTunes at the moment is crackling and appears sped up slightly, eventually jumping.
I have played music through other problems which sound OK.
Any idea what the problem is?

Can't help you but am on the same mission. My audio playback is stuttering and skipping randomly with or without programs open. All the programs are updated etc. It doesn't seem to be only an itunes problem. Very difficult to get any answers. Any Apple Administrators out there?! I'm not feeling the love.

  • ITunes playback stuttering after a few seconds

iTunes 6.04 worked fine on my computer but when I installed 6.05 iTunes would start stuttering after about 50 seconds or so. I uninstalled and reinstalled 6.04 and it worked fine again. I tried installing iTunes 7.0 and then followed the instructions in:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93610
that has been mentioned here several times. Anyone have any idea or am I just screwed?

Besides the steps in the article that you have already followed, please make sure your anti-virus is up to date, and run a scan of your computer.

  • Any fix for terrible iTunes playback?

I have several mp3s in my iTunes collection which I recently downloaded from iTunes Music Store and they sounded terrible. Bass was very distorted and treble wasn't that good either. I was of course playing them with iTunes playback. I played these songs through the Mac, my earphones and my sound system and it was the same in each case. I assumed right away that the tunes were just bad recordings and in fact I wrote a review praising the album for its music, but noting that the sound quality was often very poor.
Now, reviewing the threads at this forum, I find that others are having the same problem with iTunes playback on mp3s. As other users found, I tried playing the same songs through Quicktime and they sounded okay. Distortion was gone. Something is seriously wrong here. I'm not talking about a minor flaw that only audiophiles can hear, I'm talking about gross distortion. Users who posted here thought they might have blown a speaker, the sound was that bad.
I will, of course, make a bug report. But meanwhile is there any way to tweak iTunes to get better sound? I can't find any adjustments for iTunes playback at all, but maybe there's away. Thanx

I was able to go a long way to solving my problem by going to Preferences -> Playback, and dragging the setting on "Sound Enhancer" way to the left and un-checking "Sound Check." These features (whatever they are) seem to have been clipping the output sound like running it through a limiter.
Rant: By the way, "Sound Enhancer" and "Sound Check" convey no information. What is "Sound Enhancer" anyway? There is technical language to describe what they do but Apple seems to refuse to use it. It's like the saturation adjustment on my old TV, just called "Picture." How is anybody supposed to know what "Picture" means? "Sound Check" says it "automatically adjusts song playback volume to the same level." Same level as what? I suppose that means that the volume of song A which is loud is adjusted to match song B which is soft. But obviously the outcome is clipping. How can this be achieved without limiting dynamic range? /Rant
Don't know if this fix will work for other users who complain of distortion in playback. Obviously there are users who like Heavy Metal and in that case music and distortion are the same thing.

  • Problems with playback quality of animated DVD on television

I'm sending a ~20 minute (uncompressed, millions of colors) animation in QuickTime out of Final Cut Express HD in a format of HD-1080i and trying to get a very high resolution DVD for television (HD TV). Before taking the QuickTime video to any DVD writing software the aspect ratio (16:9) is correct and resolution is immaculate.
However, all my efforts to get a super-high resolution DVD of this animation, whether I go through iMovie or only to iDVD have gotten me a lot of written and wasted DVDs in my tests. The resolution is very poor.
    QUESTION:
How do I get a very complex animation that requires very intense color and clarity to a DVD for playback on a HD TV using my software? In my arsenal is Final Cut Express-HD vers. 3, iLIfe '06 incl. iMovie and iDVD, Toast (if needed).
    Please advise.

HHHMMM….. where to start. First, you can’t possibly
hold yourself to commercial quality unless you have a
    commercial budget.
I don't expect commercial quality - just to be able to display the millions of colors and the extreme clarity on any TV and even better still on a HDTV. So far I only can get the quality I seek on a computer display. All my efforts to find a solution for television playback have resulted in a fuzzy and jerky animated feature. Here again I'm not looking for commercial quality - just clear, crisp and smooth.
    Hollywood spends millions on
feature films. Compression hardware alone can run
several thousands if not hundreds of thousands of
dollars. Compared to iDVD included in a $79 software
suite? However, even the Hollywood produced DVDs must
rely on the DVD specification and as such, 1080i is
currently lost on them. So your answer to “isn’t iDVD
supposed to write anything I give it” is that if iDVD
takes your QT file (Which BTW, should be in the DV
format) it WILL compress it to a DVD MPEG 2 compliant
    file. This means 720x480.
But I don't want any compression other than the final step MPEG2. And after reading this reply today - THANK YOU - THANK YOU - I at least understand now that I can't even use iDVD because it doesn't offer MPEG2 as a compressor.
I have located a mpeg2 encoder program that is shareware and will try to find a formule to use after iMovie HD additions of themes and chapters.
So the first step to take
is to recognize the limitations of equipment and
understand the standards. So now we should examine
the workflow to see if there is anything that can be
done. Other than knowing what Flash is, I don’t know
much about it. Can you select a frame size for doing
your animations? If so, guess what, use the 720x480
frame size. This is what iDVD is going to make it
(again, FCP may offer more options to you but that
    isn’t listed in your arsenal).
Final Cut Pro isn't needed for what I'm doing, is it? I have already gotten exquisite playback quality for computers using FCE HD and I'm now trying to get the playback quality on a TV as good as I can get it.
    Next, from within FCE,
do not change the settings when exporting via QT. You
want to export it as it is in FCE, you don’t want to
change it. iDVD is expecting a DV file. Any other
file and quality will likely take a hit. Finally, why
DVDs? Flash is typically web based. And computer
monitors have a much higher resolution than a TV.
Flash is generally web based but it can be used to produce a single QuickTime movie if the elements are primarily drawings as my animated feature is. Then on to Final Cut Express all of my imported clips are in QuickTime and thus are already compresssed by QuickTime's excellent compressor. I found that I do not get a good result if I allow any further compression - at least not on computer displays - as long as I export with QT conversion, compression none, millions of colors and specify the size I want it to maintain.
    You
could output your Files and serve them up via a data
DVD to be played on a computer. Just curious.
I am already getting excellent playback quality on computers but now I need playback quality on any television because it is not intended only for computers.
    Mike
Thanks Mike. You've already been a help in getting me away from iDVD for this project. iMovie may be OK still because its "HD". Got any more suggestions for my situation?

  • Stinking up the iPhone: auto-start and/or auto-stop iTunes playback

The feature to auto-start and/or auto-stop iTunes playback is a disaster. A good idea poorly implemented perhaps, or maybe not possible to implement well. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give us a setting to turn this off! MANY MANY ENTRIES ACROSS MANY FORUMS! (e.g. Apple Discussions messageID=9937311) I will consider switching to another smartphone for this reason alone, it's that big a nuisance.

  • ITunes radio is stuttering

iTunes radio is stuttering while playing. Not every song but many. Is occurring after updating software also.
    HELP.

I am having the same stuttering radio playback, from the 12.1.2 upgrade, on my iMac running Yosemite and my MacBook Pro running Mavericks with iTunes 12.1.0. Only when selecting iTunes' Featured Radio Stations does the stuttering occur. Plays and stops every couple seconds. If I select Internet Radio, those stations seem to play without the stutter.
I had not played iTunes music for a number of months. Prior use was with earlier versions of iTunes that did not have the Featured Radio stations. Never had a problem with those version, but that was using Internet Radio stations in iTunes. Pandora and Spotlight play their songs without any stutter.
So, I guess, until Apple engineers provide a solution, I will play iTunes Internet Radio stations and Pandora and Spotlight. Evidently, Apple customer service does not care if its customer don't pay for the extra Featured Radio Station options, nor purchase featured songs, since we cannot listen to the songs without them being constantly interrupted by pauses.
If anyone finds a solution, please post.

  • Itunes playback performance issue

All my iTunes library files are kept on the Airport extreme and so every time I play a movie, it skips, stutters, loses sound here and there, it's getting quite annoying. I noticed that if a movie is projected to the big screen using apple TV, it will buffer like a youtube video and plays absolutely fine. Also, if I go directly to the folder and right-click on the file, play with VLC, there is no problem. It would appear to me that the problem is with iTunes' playback of videos on my Airport Extreme.
Does anybody have the same problem and is there a solution?

I can only offer you a sympathetic shoulder to cry on.
I'm not using an air disk. I'm using a hard drive on an old G3 that I use to serve my music library to my laptop as a wander throughout the house. I have it set up this way because I also have the G3 hooked up to a stereo system that can pump music to various locations of the house. So both machines need access to the library, as well as the playlists, rating histories, playback counts, etc., so that my smart playlists can have the same data to work from.
Anyway, I'm having this same issue. Both computers are constantly wanting to scan for gapless playback. I've let them both finish scanning my entire library numerous times, but it doesn't help, they want to scan it again and again, every time I launch iTunes. If I cancel the process, it will likely try to start again a few minutes later.
This only happened after I installed iTunes 9. I'm ripping my hair out over this issue. Give me back the music library that I know and love please.
