Poor, jerky preview playback on dual monitors

Hi,
I have an ongoing issue with video preview in Premiere CS4. I have a dual screen setup, but when I have the video on the 2nd monitor, the playback is poor quality and jerky (about 5 fps).
It works fine on a one monitor setup....?
Any ideas.help most appreciated.
cheers, Jamie

  • Preview Playback on 2nd Monitor

I am brand new to the Final Cut AND Mac World - just got my first Mac with Final Cut Studio two days ago.
I am having some problems getting preview playback on my 2nd monitor in RAW or full screen, neither work. What I get is the current frame of the timeline, no moving video and I get audio playback.
I have View -> All Frames checked (as opposed to single frame) but I get the same results as if single frame were checked.
My primary monitor with the standard final cut layout is an Apple 20" cinema, and the 2nd monitor is an older 17" Samsung.
I get the exact same result if I switch the full screen preview playback over to my Apple display. Just the current frame with audio playback.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

i have purchased my Mini display port to VGA adaptor and connected it to a convertor box outputting to video wire (Yellow one forgot its name) the mac recognises it and i can view my mac desktop on it but all i want is to be able to press play on the canvas and have it play in broadcast quality in full screen on my TV but it wont happen despite various other tutorials telling me how to do so. i used to be able to do this with ease on my old PC even with movie maker, any suggestions on how this can be done? ill be very grateful, Joel

"... play in broadcast quality in full screen on my TV ..."
You cannot accomplish this via the miniDisplay port and VGA. In this mode, you will see your full computer desktop on the TV (not just the FCE Canvas) and it will not be very good resolution.
You need an analog-digital converter connected via FireWire to your Mac. Most miniDV camcorders can serve as the converter. (Mac->FW->camcorder->analog a/v out->TV). Otherwise, you will need a converter like the Canopus ADVC-110.

  • Jerky playback in Source Monitor (vs. Windows Media Player) ...

I am a new user of CS5.5.   I've read the FAQ and other posts and understand that my machine is underpowered.
That said, why do my HD clips play smoothly with Windows Media Player or Quicktime, but play jerky in the PP Source Monitor?  What is it about PP's source monitor player that causes clips to choke when they can play back smoothly on the same computer using other software?   Are there any other workarounds other than a faster machine I can do in the meantime until I upgrade my hardware?
For example, I see the "render entire work area" option under the Sequence menu as noted above - is there any way to do something similar to get PP to (pre) render the clips in the Project Panel for follow up editing in the Source Monitor window?
What about batch encoding to an uncompressed format and then editing the resultant clips?  I would be concerned about loss of quality here though.  Being new to PP, not even sure this question makes any sense in the first place.
    Thanks!

Good news for you...its not designed that way and a great playback experience is possible.
Bad news is...you have to work out why you are not getting it!
(It has nothing to do with Quadro Cards because plenty of users with other cards have no issue either.)
Well, I'm just going by what I've seen in the past few years. When Premiere CS4 came out I had an Intel Quad Core 2.66 Ghz, 8 GB of RAM, Intel motherboard and an Nvidia 7950GT card. Playback was fine in Vegas, skipped frames in Premiere. Then on my current machine, an AMD 1090T 6 cores @3.2 Ghz, G.Skill 16 GB of RAM, a top of the line Gigabyte motherboard, and at first an ATI Radeon 4850HD, same thing, Vegas played fine, Edius much better (but nothing beats Edius in speed), and Premiere CS5 stuttered like crazy. Now, same machine but with an eVGA GTX570 instead of the ATI, Windows 7 x64, fresh install just one day old. Premiere CS6 does the same thing. If it's my machine, I have no idea what could it be, but the fact that it did the same on two different cards on this machine, and that Premiere CS4 used to do the same in a totally different machine, plus the fact that two other NLEs didn't have that issue, tells me Premiere has a problem at displaying video inside the GUI.
Maybe it could be that most people don't see stutter because they leave the playback quality in automatic? I'm sure I don't have any stutter if I do that, but it looks terrible. Some frames look fine, others look like the pixels got drunk and had a night out with crack whores Well, maybe that's an exaggeration, but you get the point.
If anyone has a suggestion I'd be happy to try it. It's not a terrible issue for me, I always edit with the TV set on and that is fed by the Matrox MXO2 Mini with perfect quality.

  • Preview app opens "split screen" on dual monitor setup

This is a minor issue, I rarely use the utilility "Preview" app. but I'd still like to understand this issue....I use a two monitor setup (MBP & StudioDisplay)..
The following happens if the window was last closed in "expanded" mode (you can see options for Drawer, rotate, etc)
When "Preview" launches and opens a window, it places the top portion of the window on the secondary display and bottom part of the window on the primary display.
This Does Not happen if the window was last closed in "non-exanded" (collasped) mode (sorry, I don't know the proper term).
In other words, in respect to it's position on the screen, when the window opens it always assumes it's in "collasped" mode.
    Weird... any comments?

There's something wrong with the way Preview handles dual monitors. In my case if I open a smallish item, for instance a small png, instead of opening in the upper left corner of my main monitor it opens so that about half an inch of the Preview window is sticking over onto the second monitor (which is to the left of my main monitor). I had never "collapsed" the tool bar before, so I just now tried that on a small png, then closed it and re-opened. Sure enough, without the toolbar it opens properly. Display the toolbar, close, reopen, and it sticks onto the second monitor. Weird indeed. Larger size files open normally.
This started with the Tiger version of Preview. If you wish you can send feedback:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
Maybe it will help get this odd bug squashed in a future version of Preview.

  • Elements 11 Preview Window not visible in dual monitor mode

When I go to dual monitor mode the preview window is hidden. I can still hear the audio from the clip but I can't see the video window. It is still hidden when I switch back to single monitor mode. The only way to bring it back is to close out the program and reopen it. Does anyone know where it goes and how to make it visible?

    MAINEEDIT
I have just set up for Premiere Elements 11 Dual Monitor Mode in Windows 8 64 bit computer.
How do you have your monitors set up...Extend Across.. or other?
I am not having any problems keeping track of what I believe you are referring to as the "Preview Window". So please excuse
if I double check with you via the following screenshot.
Preview Window which can be brought up
    a. double clicking the file in Project Assets
    b. double clicking the file on the Expert workspace Timeline
I am going to go over this one more time with my Premiere Elements 11 and Windows 8 64 bt computer to see
if I can create the situation that I am interpreting that you have.
    Thanks.

Add On...This especially makes me ask....
When I reopen the program the preview window appears in its normal position.
The Preview Window is going to close when you save/close the project. As you saying that you re-opened the project
to find the Preview Window opened?

  • Dual monitors (playback setup)

    Hi folks!
Is there anyone who knows if it is possible to set up AE as picture below (a dual monitor setup)?
And that the monitor setup opens every time I open ae.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7g1OcyXc9rM
    JesB

Addendum: I forgot about another option in AE that currently exists: in the Preview panel, there is a checkbox for Full Screen. If you enable this, when you RAM preview the preview will be displayed full screen, but only on the monitor where the main application frame for AE exists.
To use this option to accomplish what you want, you would need to:
    1. Move the main application frame to your 2nd monitor.
    2. Move all of the panels out of the main application frame and back to your primary montior. You can regroup them into a single window there. You only need to leave a single panel in the main application frame on the 2nd monitor; I'd recommend a 2nd comp viewer as I described in my last post.
Don't forget to save this arrangement as a new workspace.
Note that even by doing this, the full screen preview only occurs when you RAM Preview, not during scrubbing. Also, "full screen" really means "1:1 pixels", so if your comp size is smaller than the monitor's resolution, the difference will be filled in by gray pixels (the UI color defined in the Appearance preferences).

  • Dual Monitor and Full screen playback in Color 1.0

So, I was wondering if somebody could help me out.
I have 2 screens, one is a 23" ACD other is a 23" dell. I am going to be color correcting with my Matrox MXO setup on the 23"ACD. Whenever I do full screen playback the waveform monitor and vectroscope and all that jazz is not available anymore (obviously because of full screen)
So I was wondering what my options were:
    1. Setup the waveform and vector scope to show on my primary display? (if possible, I'm not sure how to do it)
    2. Do I have to get another graphics card and run three monitors?
    3. If I Color grade with full screen playback disabled am I still utilizing the MXO for grading?
I am new to Color and how it works so I apologize if these questions seem "newbie-ish" of me.
    Thanks

Isn't there a SINGLE MONITOR option in COLOR? Use that.
I don't think two graphics cards will work with Color, as Color relies on the card when it comes time to render. Might mess it up, or not work.

  • AE CS4 - why such poor RAM preview on my FAST machine?

Hi all, I just installed After Effects CS4 - I have a smokin fast mchine: quadcore Zeon 3.20 GHz, hyperthreading turned on, nvidia quadrofx 3800 with current driver, 12 GB DDR3 RAM, windows 7 64bit ... can you PLEASE help me troubleshoot a problem:  even on the simplest compositions, a moving picture or a moving piece of type, the RAM preview stutters along, the current time indicator hops along at a choppy pace, images in the frame dont look like they're moving smoothly, and all i get is about 6 seconds of RAM preview ... seems to me that I used to get better performance on a MUCH MUCH  slower machine under windows XP ... i have looked around the forums and seem the advice on multiprocessor options and the like, but nothing I do seems to help ... do any of you have any advice for me to improve my performance???  if you have any questions about my setup or preferences, let me know, I will be on this until I get what I expect out of my (otherwise incredibly fast) machine

Hi Todd, thanks again for your reply ... FYI, I bought the FX3800 for Avid editing, for which it is the qualified video card, and supports distributed processing in the Avid along with my DX HD hardware BOB - I had hoped it would work well with After Effects, too, but I do understand the Adobe is very transparent about the fact that, as long as your card has OpenGL support, probably best to sink your $$$ into more RAM or faster CPU .. but to stay on topic, I am just  very stunned that I am not getting better playback with my system ... I have the most recent Nvidia drivers ... I have 2 NEC 2490WUXi2 each connected through DVI-D to my video card, each runnign at its native 1920x1200 res, 59 hertz ... the programs I have installed are Adobe CS4 Production Premium, Win7 64bit, MS Office 2007 Enterprise, latest version of Quick Time, Media Player version 11, and NERO 9 ... you dont think that one of these video player apps (like media player or QT) are messing with my screen performance do you?  what about Nero 9, have you heard any compatibility or display problems associated with this app?  would unistalling any of these programs be a troubleshooting technique that you'd attempt?
Finally, when you say "an issue with a bottleneck of drawing to the screen" what do you mean exactly? 'cause this kinds sounds like a goood description of what I am seeing ... what might be the cause of such a bottleneck, I am willing to try anything ...
    Thanks, sir, for your reply!

Subject: AE CS4 - why such poor RAM preview on my FAST machine?
Just one thing to cut down a frequent misconception:
Your nice graphics card doesn't do much for After Effects performance. In fact, trying to use OpenGL for rendering (including rendering of previews) can cause problems.
I recommend turning OpenGL rendering off for all but interactions. I.e., choose the http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/9.0/WSAF696587-2D81-42e2-B248-4C5C2B7D3614a.html and turn off http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/9.0/WS3878526689cb91655866c1103a4f2dff7-79e8a.htm l. OpenGL is not compatible with Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing.
I'm not saying that OpenGL is your problem. Rather, because you mentioned your nice graphics card, I just had to stress that you need to forget about that with regard to After Effects. It's not really relevant.
It may be that the jerkiness is an issue with a bottleneck of drawing to the screen. (I don't know, but it's possible.)
Your hard disk being too slow wouldn't be an issue with RAM previews, since the frames are all cached in RAM.

  • RAM Preview Playback Slow

I upgraded to AE CS4 and now the playback frame rate of my RAM previews will never play in realtime.
Even in the simplest comp (DV NTSC 29.97fps) my RAM previews playback at about 20fps.
On this same system in AE CS3 I could do HD Comps that were fairly complicated and get HD 24fps previews in realtime.
Any ideas on where to start looking for the problem? I've searched the forum for a similar issue, but the posts I have found don't relate to my issue.

I'm on a Dual Core 2.66 machine with 2mbs of RAM.
I turned off the external preview option, and now I get realtime RAM previews. I had it going out of a Kone LHe card. That was never a problem in CS3, and I have the latest drivers for the Kona.
I'd like to be able to preview out to my external HD monitor. Any ideas on what I could tweak to do so? I've looked at the improve performance page. My issue is less about render times (I'm happy to wait), but I do want RT previews.
Thanks for the input so far.

  • DUAL MONITOR BUG: One Picture – One Monitor – Different Colors!

There have been several threads discussing that Photoshop CS4 and OS 10.6. show wrong colors in dual monitor setups.
The first one to prove this with a screen capture was jb510-LJ0JJQ in August 2009: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2207312#2207312
Eight months and three OS updates later the problem is still there and makes professional work with more than one monitor a nuisance.
Here's another actual example: A picture and its 100% identical copy showing different colors on one screen!
Here's how to repeat it – try this at home ;-)
    1) In the finder make a copy of a rgb picture.
    2) Open one of the two identical pics in photoshop.
    3) Drag it to the other monitor.
When releasing the mouse button you may see the bug already: the colors will "switch".
    4) To verify this go to system presets - monitors - and change the primary monitor (by dragging the menu bar to the other)
    5) Now open the identical copy you made in step 1) and see the difference!
Here's a synopsis of suggested workarounds:
    1) disable open GL (which seem to makes no difference on my setup)
    2) click "desaturate monitor colors" but set desaturation to 0 (which prevents visual switching in step 3) (only if openGL is ON) but also leads to a wrong display in step 4+5
    3) make the hardware calibrated monitor your default monitor and strictly avoid changes or dragging pics to the other monitor (which seems to be the only reliable method)
    4) some guys even force both monitors to use the profile of their hardware-calibrated monitor (using color sync) to make sure they see what they should see on at least that one monitor. What a stone-age workaround for the the world's leading imaging program!
Considering that reliable colors in professional (=multi monitor) settings should be the most basic function of photoshop this mayor malfunction should be solved with CS5! Otherwise we might have to live with it for some more years...
Have Adobe and Apple realized this bug and on their agenda? Will it be gone with OS 10.6.3? Can anyone explain the reasons for this bad bug? Is there a "officially" recommended workaround?
    Thanks, regards,
    Eric

There have been several threads dealing with this malfunction. But most faded out in silence or acceptance of the workarounds.

But man, this is no minor bug! Consistent colors are the by far most important basic function of photoshop. If you cannot rely on the colors in photoshop you can as well use "Preview" and "Word" for print production ;-)
Carson, how did Apple react to your complaint? What do you mean with "they don't get it". Do they not see it? Or can't they get it right?
Shall we open a thread at apple forums to point out that it's not the problem of a single user?

  • Dual monitor setup

    Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit / Lightroom 3.2
I have a dual monitors and for some reason. Lightroom decided to populate my right monitor with the preview image and/or loupe and/or grid view etc. and fill the entire screen with no options to reduce or turn it off, a very annoying arrangement. Is there any way I can turn that off? I have uses for that right monitor regardless of what the dad-gum program decides.
    Thanks in advance,

  • With different dual monitors can you choose which image to print

I have dual monitors which I calibrate but they still look different. I have lightroom on the main screen with a full loupe view on monitor 2, I would like to print this image (on monitor 2 ) as its easier to see the changes during develop because its bigger. Is this possible or does lightroom only print the image either on the main screen or in the main lightroom module

You are only previewing through the monitor profile. It does nothing else in the chain to Print. There's no conversion done between monitor profiles and printer profile, just Lightroom's internal working profile and the printer profile. Photoshop converts between the working profile and the printer profile, again the monitor profile is only applied to what you see on the screen. The actual process of colour matching can never be 100% exact, but can get close under ideal viewing conditions. The screen emits light, whereas the print must be lit, and takes on the colour of the light in the environment. High end printers will viewing stations with with which to determine print accuracy.. a luxury most of us won't.
In more simpler terms, make the print. Compare it to the monitors under good daylight and gauge from there which is closest to the print.

  • HP paviliion p7-1423W Dual Monitor

I have this HP pavilion product and wish to run dual monitor on it.  It has two display ports DVI-I and DVI-D, it came out of the box with a DVI-I to VGA adapter, which I am using for my main screen, I recently bought a DVI-D to Analog VGA(i have a HP v17 which is analog) I've changed the only possible setting in my BIOS that I can find that deals with display was labeled something about VGA i enabled it and still my screen displays "No Input Signal", I've tried this DVI-D port with my main monitor and it does the same thing.  I've looked in the Intel HD Graphics GUI the only screen showing up is my Dell(main) the only other option for display is "Intel WiDi" which i dont have a wifi display.  Anyone have any insight on how I can get dual monitors working.  According to the user manual and the reviews I've read about this product it's able to handle two monitors so I dont see why I cant get it working.

    3 - DVI-D (digital only)          4 - DVI-I (digital and analog)
    ==========================================================
    Looking at ports #3 and #4, notice that port #4 (DVI-I) has "cross" with four pins surrounding it while port #3 (DVI-D) doesn't have those four pins. Please see Wikipedia article entitled "Digital Visual Interface (DVI)" for more information on this subject. From the previously mentioned article;
"This is a passive DVI-to-VGA adapter. This adapter will NOT work with a DVI-D output. It requires a DVI-I or DVI-A output to get the analog signal to a VGA input (even if the adapter looks like a DVI-D). An expensive active converter would be required for a DVI-D output to VGA input."
    Note that an expensive active converter may have video image quality issues, which could impair the value of this device versus the cost. Based on the specs, both of your monitors support VGA only. You have several options to resolve your issue;
    1)  Buy an active DVI-D to VGA converter (costly with possible poor image quality)
    2)  Buy a USB-to-video adapter such as an eVGA UV Plus+ UV39 (not good for gaming or high-bandwidth content video)
    3)  Purchase a new video card that supports your desired configure (may require replacing the power supply)
    4)  Purchase a new monitor that supports at least one DVI-D digital input (depending on size, may be expensive)

  • Dual Monitors on Mac Mini Late 2014 not working on Dell S2340Lc

    Hey guys,
Got a mac mini and using it mainly for work. Working for an ISP and no one has used macs and I've opted to be the poor sucker that gets to deal with old people that don't know how to mac very goodly.
I have two Dell S2340Lc monitors. I have one connected up via HDMI and that works perfectly fine. I turned off the mac, I plugged in Monitor 2 with a MiniDP/Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter, powered on the mac and whilst it was booting, it had the Apple logo and the loading bar on the Dell display plugged in to the thunderbolt to hdmi adapter and then once it loaded up the log in screen, it went to the HDMI display. I logged in and in the displays section, the monitor plugged in to the thunderbolt to hdmi adapter isn't being detected, however I can plug it in to a Samsung 55 Inch Smart TV and it works just fine. I can set up dual monitors between the TV and the monitor in HDMI, but the Dell S2340Lc will only work with a HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the mac mini and will not work through the thunderbolt to hdmi adapter. On the display it just says that there is no signal coming from the computer.
Just wondering if any of you apple gurus had any ideas as to why this isn't working?
    Thanks!
