Poor performance playing .mts files in source monitor

OK is Adobe really that far behind in writing up some code that can handle AVCHD .mts files? I transfer the .mts files from my camera to the hard drive, access them in PP via the media browser, import them to the project panel and when I try to play any of them back in the source monitor, playback is just plain shoddy, piss poor, horrible. I get some stutter (playback stops for a sec then resumes) but mostly what I notice is allot of noise in the video or pixelation, random blocks of pixels jump all over the video. Sorry I don't know how else to explain. I know that converting the .mts files to a lossless format first is the most common response but then where is the time saved with this whole format? Just curious if anyone has any input or maybe some hardware tweaks that might help.

Scratch Discs are 4 SATA 80GB 7200rpm in RAID 0

My two cents on all this. I've only been editing for 2 yrs so I'm no expert but my experience is this. High Def formats are resource intensive already, you start adding in transitions, motion graphics, color correction and render times can go off the charts. Most people I talk to or see in the forums are pretty much trying to do what they can on the cheap, myself included ( I would love 2 new maxed out Mac Pro 8 cores, BUT...).  My specs are below and with this setup I find that after all the software/firmware updates my system works fine, far from perfect but with a good workflow and some patience I can get most any job completed on time and on budget. I think Harm's post above with links to setting up your OS and optimizing your workstation is critical to success. It made a world of difference for my setup. The next thing I'm finding is the most important thing are your hard drives, you need em fast and plentiful. Ever since I went to one drive for OS/APPS, one for content and a RAID 0 for the scratch disk. My render times and app hang ups/crashes decreased substantially. What I am now finding with my set up is as my external content hard drive fills up, the slower it gets (basic HD logic). Which causes my projects/source monitor playbacks to hang and sometimes crash. So my next step is to set up another internal RAID 0 scratch disk for temp content storage ( I believe the less Adobe has to read/write from the same hard drives the better ). I will load what I need on it for the project then wipe it clean when finished. I am amazed at how quickly you can fill up a 1TB hard drive with HD footage, pics, project folders etc. So my feeling is you can be very productive with a decent workstation, correct hardware setup and lots of big, fast hard drives. On a side note, I can also tell you to delete any resource in your project window that you are not using in your timeline prior to rendering as the media encoder loads EVERYTHING that is in your project window before encoding and that can take up some valuable time.

  • Can't play music files in Source monitor (CS6)

I've just encountered a very strange problem today that that I can't seem to fix.
If I click on an MP3 or WMA file in the project window it won't play in the source window. It also crashes all the other windows and I have to restart premiere.
Sometimes it will play in the windows, but then there is no sound even though the audio meters are moving.
I can however play the music files in the Source window if I double click it in the main timeline. everything is normal doing it that way.
I don't have any problems with MXF files playing in the Source window.
So at the moment, I can't review any music file in the source window.
Anyone know what the problem could be?
    My PC spec is:
    i7 3930
    64GB ram
    4GB nvidia 680
    Creative SB X-Fi sound card
    C drive: SSD
    D drive: 300GB Raptor > Scratch Disk
F drive: RAID 3 array > video footage
Media cache is on D drive and "save media cache files next to originals when possible" option checked.
    Thanks

Thanks. Just tried that and it didn't fix it.
I can see the Audio Meter bars moving but can't hear any sound.
Also can't hear any sound from the MXF files either. Will have to restart Premiere again to get it working.
EDIT. Left it for a bit and the MXF files now play ok in the Souce window but music files still don't.

  • MXF file plays with audio on Source Monitor but timeline imports only the video

    Hello,
This started happening like a few hours ago. But it was working perfectly before! This is driving me insane!
This is the situation (Premiere CC, updated to latest version):
    - I have a bunch of MXF files and if I play them on the Source Monitor, audio and video play perfectly.
    - The moment I drag the MXF file onto the timeline, only the video is imported, not the audio.
    - I tried to drag only the audio, using the different ways that Premiere provides but it won't come at all.
I managed to import audio and video doing the following: close all sequences, and drag the MXF file in the timeline with no sequence opened thus it will create a sequence with the imported audio and video from the MXF file.
BUT if I try to drop the SAME MXF file in this brand new sequence, only the video will come again.
Does anyone have an idea of what is going on? And why it suddenly stopped working?
    Thank you!

  • 24 fps video does not play in CS5.5 source monitor without choppy motion

Problem: 24 fps video does not play in CS5.5 source monitor without choppy motion. 30 frame will play fine. I took the same 24fps shot, using the exact same setup parameters, and played it in my CS5.0. No problem. I did them side by side and checked to make sure everything was EXACLTY the same. The 24fps shot played smoothly in the CS5.0 source monitor. Can anyone tell me what the solution might be to get the CS5.5 to play smoothly? When I rendered it on the timeline in CS5.5 it played smoothly on the timeline. Perplexed.

    Thanks Tood,
Here's the other info. I am running CS5.5 on a windows 7 ultimate 64bit (service pack 1) OS. All of the recent updates have been installed on both the OS and the CS5.5. The source footage is H.264.mov from a nikon d7000 at 1080p 24fps. My video card is an Nvida GeForce GTX285. My processor is an Intel Core i7 3.33GHz with 12GB ram. I am running no third party codecs or effects. I am using the Mercury Playback engine GPU accelerator. I am using a DSLR24 frame project setting.
Here is the problem: When I bring a 1920x1080 24fps.mov file into my DSLR24 frame project, or any project setting, in my CS5.5 and open it in the source monitor it plays as if it is trying to catch up; stuttering and skipping; it plays the same on the sequence timeline until I render it.  I get no error messages. When I bring the exact same file into my CS5.0, with the exact same project settings, it plays perfectly in the source monitor and on the timeline without rendering. When I bring in a 1280x720 24fps.mov or any other size file into my CS5.5 in any project configuration, it plays perfectly smoothly. Everything plays smoothly without renedering in the source monitors of my CS5.0 and CS5.5 except for a 1920x1080 24fps.mov file in CS5.5. The exact one that I need to play there.
I would have no problem cutting in my CS5.0 if it intergrated with audition; which is why I bought the CS5.5.
    Thanks,

  • Video won't play in timeline or source monitor

I recently purchased a Canon HG10 camcorder and have been attempting to edit the AVCHD .mts files using Premiere Pro CS4 (4.2.1). However, I have been unable to play the video in either the timeline or source monitor. Both the video and audio will play for a fraction of a second and then stop. I thought it might be an issue with the .mts file so I converted it to several other formats (Quicktime, H.264, MPEG4, etc.) and I still can't get any video to play. I imported and tried playing other video, but to no avail. I can edit, scrub, export, apply effects, and do pretty much anything else - but I can not get it to play in the timeline. I do have Final Cut Express and if I convert the .mts file to Quicktime I can edit it, but I would like to be able to edit the native Canon AVCHD.
    Current system:
    iMac 10.6.4
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    3 GB RAM
    ATI Radeon X1600
    74 GB hard drive space
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Jason

    Jason,
The first thing that I would check would be your Playback Preferences. Please list your settings, and folk here can review them and possibly spot something simple.
Next, I would do one of two things, regarding your Catalyst drivers for you ATI/AMD card. If you do not have the latest driver, download and install it. If you DO have the latest Catalyst driver, keep it around in a safe folder, but download and install an earlier version. Cannot recall the exact numbers now, but a few users had to go back about three versions. Also, since those driver versions were listed in this forum, I'd bet that at least two more have been released. Going back a few months, it seems that there were 2 - 3 versions, that did not work well with some Adobe programs.
Though I have all nVidia cards, I keep drivers going back about 6 mos., as I never know when I might encounter an issue and need to roll-back.
Also, as the gaming market drives the video card business, and their drivers, it is possible that some gamer-only module has been added. That happened with nVidia drivers about a year ago. For a couple of versions, one had to manually disable a 3D and another gamer-only module. Later versions installed with these off, unless the user turned them on.
Last thought - check your OpenGL settings, and depending on your OS, check Hardware Acceleration. In your Catalyst console, check what your 3D settings are. You want to set any to "Let the application choose," or similar syntax.
Good luck, and hope that something there helps you.

  • Open file in source monitor via extension

I want to be able to list some files in an external window (could be browser or an application). The files are already imported in the project. When I click on a file, I want it to open in source monitor. Is this possible?

Hi Jostein, I'll contact you directly to discuss further.

  • Poor performance that change XML data source programically

The XML file get from database each time is different, so I have to specify the XML path dynamically.
I find the process of DataBaseController.replaceConnection(conn1,conn2) is very slow if the XML structure is more complex, in my case, the size of the XML is about 100K and tables(hierarchy) are more than 50.
I also try to use the setDatasource(IXMLSource,'','') and setTableLocation, the result are same and almost spend 3 seconds  or more for this process.
Any suggestion to me or what's wrong about that case?

The XML for the documents are generated by the product code using BC4J XML generation. No concurrent program is involved in it.
As regards to including additional fields from Sourcing documents into the XML generated, you can use the BC4J extension fwk to extend the ViewObject that generates XML and modify the query to include any additional fields as needed.
All the above assumes knowledge of Oracle Application Framework and the customization fwk. There is a Metalink Note (dont know the exact id) which explains how to extend BC4J objects and deploy them.

  • Poor performance with small files on Xsan volume

Since I'm running on Xsan for with network users and server shares, I have various problems.
Users complaining on slow logins, Word files that have saving errors. For the Word problem, there are a lot tricks like .TemporaryItems with acl.
But I think there's another reason. My mobile home users are not yet using the new home server with mobile homes. Today I migrated my own account to the new server en syncing is very slow on files from my iCal server and mail archive.
So I did a test on the servers that are connected to the san. The backup servers has the san volume mounted and some old Xraids for backup storage. If I duplicate my iCal folder (8000 files) it takes 8 minutes in the Xsan volume. On an Xraid, less than 30 seconds. If I duplicate 1 2.5GB diskimage file on the san volume, it does it in less than 10 seconds.
    My Xsan setup:
    All Intel Xserves
1 MD server dedicated (4GB Atto FC)
1 OD server and server shares (and backup MD controller) (4GB Atto FC)
1 home folder server (4GB Atto FC)
1 backup server (also MD backup controller) (4GB Apple FC card)
2 Promise Vtraks with 16X 750 GB disks
1 MD lun (2disks mirrored) (Own FC controller)
2 Data luns (8.87 TB each lun) (Each own FC controller)
Xsan setup is done with configuration for home directories.
Block allocation size: 8kb Round Robin
    Separate ethernet metadata network.
I hope someone can give me some pointers.
    Patrick

I have the same issue and it is killing our iCal Server performance.
My question would be, can you edit an XSAN Volume without destroying the data?
There is one setting that I think might ease the pressure... in the Cache Settings (Volumes -> <Right-Click Volume> -> Edit Volume Settings)
Would increasing the amount of Cache help? Would it destroy the data?!?!?

  • Can't see video in Source Monitor, or play it in Program Monitor

    Hi there
I have been using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 fine for months now, doing the same tasks on a daily basis. However yesterday morning the computer crashed whilst editing some footage and now it doesn't function properly.
I have re-installed the software and this hasn't fixed issues, and also performed a system restore which fixed some but not all of them.
The main problem is I can now import video into the project and drop it onto the timeline (which I couldn't before the system restore) but now I can't view the original footage in the Source Monitor, making editing tricky, and it doesn't play continuosly in the Source Monitor, only giving a still image wherever I leave the playhead.
I can hear the audio and it plays without any breaks, it's just the video.
    Can anyone help?

Can anyone help? I use it for work and basically I can't do any more work until it's fixed.
    Things I've tried:
    Uninstall and reinstall
    System restore
    Checking opacity on clip
    Checking which workspaces are open
importing old footage and other formats
    opening old projects
    updating codecs
    emptying media cache

  • Source Monitor smooth, but Program Monitor STUTTERS

What would cause a clip to play smoothly in the SOURCE monitor, but to not play smoothly in the PROGRAM monitor? Playback resolution makes no difference.
I've tried using "New Sequence From Clip" - same problem. I'm not using an external monitoring device like AJA or Blackmagic.
Boggles my mind.  If you figure it out, I owe you lunch.
(Note: Sequence settings match, playback settings are the same for each monitor, software is CS5.5, computer is Mac Pro 3,1 with 10GB RAM, graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 3870, and hard drive is fibre channel RAID.)

Refresh rates are always the first thing to check - your external monitor should be set to the same refresh as the content. Playing 30p content on a 50Hz monitor will jitter and vice versa. That said I have never got external previews to playback without any stuttering at all and reading other posts around the only real solution is external hardware.

  • Glitch in Audio when switching from Source Monitor to timeine in PPro

I am running a nMP 3ghz 8-core, 16gb ram, D700's, on osx 10.10. PProCC is 8.2.0 (65) Build. It is the most up to date version on CC. I also have a Focusrite Scarlette 2i2 for my Audio interface. This is where I'm having the issue. When I playback a clip in the source monitor, then go to play something in the timeline I get a weird 2 second delay with 2 pop's in my speakers, the lights on the XLR gain knobs on the focusrite audio interface flash twice in sync with the audio pops, then the timeline will play. And if I now go to play something in the source monitor coming from the timeline it does the same thing, 2 seconds, pops, lights then it plays. But if I stop and start the clip in either the source monitor or timeline without switching between, it plays fine. Only switching between the source monitor and the timeline. I have tried numerous things in the ASIO settings but nothing seems to get rid of this glitch and it drives me and my clients insane because it does it every single time I switch between the two. HELP!

Cam, I have this exact same problem. I plan on sending out some emails to hopefully find a solution, but I thought I would check here quick. Did you ever find an answer to your question elsewhere?

  • .mts file video won't play in Elements 10 Monitor Panel

    Hi All
I am having trouble with .mts files.  I have Premier Elements 10 on Win7 pc, and I have just, for the first time, opened .mts video files which were taken on my Lumix FZ150.  When I drag the scenes onto the timeline then try to preview them I can hear the audio but the video in the Monitor Panel doesn't move, it doesn't play.
Is there something I am doing wrong?

    jgjgjfjf
What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 10 running on? And, does your computer use a NVIDIA GeForce video card/graphics card?
IMPORTANT. Please read the Announcement at the top of this forum regarding the Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA GeForce issue. That Announcement describes the problem and gives detailed information on how to deal with the situation.
Do you have problems getting a video display in the Edit area monitor for still and videos from other sources?
Also of importance in directing the troubleshooting are the properties of the Panasonic Lumix FZ150 video file that you are importing and the project preset that you are selecting to match the properties of that video. From what I have read of your camera, you could have MPEG-4, AVCHD, or MotionJPEG video compression. But, with that .mts file extension, that would suggest that your camera is set to record AVCHD. Is that correct?  Are you sure of the file extension and video compression for the file?
The answers to all of the above will point us to the solution to your issue.
We will be watching for your results.
    Thank you.

  • PP CC 2014 plays video fine from .mts files, but the audio is glitchy and jumpy.

    Premiere Pro CC 2014
    OSX 10.9.5
I have imported .MTS files from one Canon C100 into PP through the Media Browser. I kept the file structure intact from the camera when copying. When I play a file in the source or program monitor the video plays back perfectly; however, the audio is glitchy and jumpy. It will skip time, jumping forward and backward seemingly randomly. If I open the same clip in Quicktime 10, it plays back 100% normal. I have restarted, reimported, and even transcoded the files to Pro Res 422 using Media Encoder CC 14. Nothing fixed it. The audio glitches the same way in the transcoded Pro Res Files.
This is only the first of three cards of media. In total I have 120 .mts files in three separate AVCHD folders from a three camera C100 shoot. This leads to another issue I know I will run into. There will be three .mts files named "001," three named "002," etc. I have solved this issue in the past simply by transcoding, but that again failed to work for me thus far. So if I must stick with the .mts files, does anyone know a workflow for using multiple .mts files with the same name in one project/timeline?
    Thanks

I find it hard to believe that this fixes the root of the problem as the same files playback fine in CS6. CS6 and CC 2014 should be referencing the same codec library on my system, right? If this is the case, then there is something wrong with how CC14 is decompressing the footage with the codecs that are working fine in CS6.
To further this point. I imported the same files into CS6. CS6 played them back fine, so I saved the session and opened it up in CC14. CC14 converted the project file and all media loaded and plays back normal now.
So if this is a codec issue, it would not have been solved by opening the files first in CS6. It also would not be solved as so many others report by moving the files and relinking to the new folder. It seems to me to be an import issue that is solely in CC14, not CC or CS6.
