Poor performance - QT Player and Safari

Ok, so I've been ignoring this issue on my computer for the longest time and I think it's time I got to the bottom of it.
I'm using a Quicksilver G4, 733MHz, with 896MB RAM.
Now, previously, prior to upgrading to Tiger, using Panther and QT 6.5 something, Quicktime worked pretty much flawlessly. I was so happy with it. After upgrading to Tiger such a long time ago, I noticed QT 7 wasn't nearly up to par and its performance was very bad.
The real issue here is this: Whenever I watch a streaming movie downloaded from the internet, in Safari, it runs choppy. Choppy as in the framerate stutters considerably, the video will pause while the audio still plays, and it basically renders the video unwatchable. The workaround I've been doing all this time, is: downloading the video onto my desktop and playing it through VLC. (Which it does absolutely flawlessly, mind you.)
Oh but it gets better - when I play these EXACT same video files in Quicktime Player - I get "improved" performance, but it still does the same thing: choppy video playback. Now, when I play these same streaming files in Firefox - they work, smooth as a baby's bottom. Quicktime's streaming plug-in works great. Doesn't make sense...
On top of ALL that: After this problem was already engraved in my head after trying numerous troubleshooting (reinstalling latest versions of Quicktime, clearing caches, making a test user account, A&I, etc....) I eventually upgraded my computer, and put another internal 250GB HD in it. So I was basically starting from scratch - a complete erase and install of the HD.
Lo and behold, Quicktime STILL did it. - same exact problem. So I gave up for a while and have been using VLC ever since. Or Firefox.
So that's my problem guys - any suggestions would be nice, or if you'd like, just tell me to keep using VLC and/or Firefox as workarounds and don't even try to fix it. ¬_¬

Quicksilver Powermac G4 733Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   896 MB RAM, 250GB & 40GB HD

I do not use Safari. However, I found this troubleshooting technique in the MacAddict Magazine December 06 issue:
To fix a QT related problem w/Safari, quit Safari & look in the /Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder (this is the Library folder at the root level of your HD, not the one inside your Users/user name folder).
Try removing the VLC Plugin.plugin (if you have it) & QT Plugin.plugin files from this folder, & then relaunch Safari. If the problem isn’t fixed, a different plug-in may be to blame. Keep removing files from this folder (start with any third-party plug-ins that are present) until the problem disappears.
Replace the plug-ins that don’t cause any problems.

  • DivX Web Player and Safari

    Hello,
I've been throug so many forums trying to solve this problem, but nothing seemed to work. So I hope someone can solve it here.
The problem: *DivX movies won't load in Safari.*
    Steps i've taken so far:
Using Safari 4.0.5, running in 32-bit mode:
    1) Deleted DivX-player and safari plug-in using the DivX Uninstaller.
    2) Deleted Shockwave Flash Player using Flahs Player uninstaller (http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash)
    3) Installed RealPlayer SP (http://uk.real.com/realplayer/mac/)
    4) Installed Flip4Mac WMV player (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx)
    5) Installed Perian (http://perian.org/)
    6) Installed Shockwave Flash Player (http://get.adobe.com/nl/flashplayer/)
    7) Deleted all files relating to DivX in Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime, since Perian already has them.
    8) Enabled plugins in Safari preferences
    9) Repaired permissions
    10) Restarted my computer
According to a topic I found (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1299922&tstart=0), this would do. Perian would play all embedded DivX movies. However, it didn't. Safari told me the plugin could not be found. I don't even know Perian did anything. Should there be any sign of Perian when it's working? Or is it invisible?
    So I continued trying:
    11) Installed DivX 7 (containing the DivX Web plugin) (http://www.divx.com)
    12) Relaunched Safari
According to other users who responded in the thread i mentioned above, this could solve the problem. With me, it didn't. Now Safari does find the plugin, but it won't load the video. It seems the video is buffering, but at 99% it stops. When I try again, it stops at 98%. And so on ... Once, I got only sound and no video ... very strange.
    So I continued:
    13) I deleted DivX 7 using the DivX uninstaller.
    14) I installed an older version of the DivX Web Plugin
Did not work. Safari didn't find the plugin.
Then I noticed Safari 5 was released, so I hoped the problem would not occur in Safari 5, but it did.
However, some things have changed. In the mean time i've re-installed the DivX 7 Web Plugin and deleted all files related to DivX in Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime (I assume Perian still has them and works with Safari 5 as well?)
When I now try to play a DivX video in Safari, one time it won't buffer. 0% is where it stops. However, after a few minutes I now get this alert from DivX Plus Web Player: "The file you are trying to play has failed to finish downloading and can no longer play.". The other time it does buffer, but like before it stops at 99%, 98%, ... DivX Plus Web Player gives the same message. In both cases the video does seem to load. The grey bar turns darker. But when I try to play it, it doesn't do anything.
Funny though, while I'm typing, I'm once again trying to watch a DivX video. It buffered till 99%, while the grey bar was loading. Then the error message came. The grey bar was still loading though. When it was finished, I scrolled through it and now I hear only sound of the video, no image. Weird ...
Many people say the DivX plugin works fine in Mozilla Firefox, but I get the same problem. So I guess the problem must be linked to the plugin?
Anyway, I hope someone can help me with this. It's really frustrating not to be able to view some videos coded in DivX online.
Besides, I also have problems with some radio streams in Safari. ASX streams won't load ... Someone said to run Safari with Rosetta, but that didn't help. Does anyone know a solution for this one too?
    Thanks in advance!
    Grts,
    Philippe
PS: I hope my English wasn't too bad for you to understand.

    Hi,
Thanks for your answer. After some more experimenting, i finally got it to work ... However, not every embedded DivX movie will play.
I just deleted another codec in the Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime folder. (One of the codecs mentioned on http://perian.org/#support was still in the folder). Before I had only deleted the files whose name has "DivX" in it.
I did NOT install the DivX Web Player plugin.
Now some DivX videos play, some don't... So maybe I should re-install the DivX Web Plugin? But the Web Plugin never worked for me ... If I re-install it, won't I go back to where I started?

  • Poor performance with WebI and BW hierarchy drill-down...

    Hi
We are currently implementing a large HR solution with BW as backend
and WebI and Xcelcius as frontend. As part of this we are experiencing
very poor performance when doing drill-down in WebI on a BW hierarchy.
In general we are experiencing ok performance during selection of data
and traditional WebI filtering - however when using the BW hierarchy
for navigation within WebI, response times are significantly increasing.
The general solution setup are as follows:
    1) Business Content version of the personnel administration
infoprovider - 0PA_C01. The Infoprovider contains 30.000 records
    2) Multiprovider to act as semantic Data Mart layer in BW.
    3) Bex Query to act as Data Mart Query and metadata exchange for BOE.
All key figure restrictions and calculations are done in this Data Mart
    Query.
    4) Traditionel BO OLAP universe 1:1 mapped to Bex Data Mart query. No
calculations etc. are done in the universe.
    5) WebI report with limited objects included in the WebI query.
As we are aware that performance is an very subjective issues we have
created several case scenarios with different dataset sizes, various
filter criteria's and modeling techniques in BW.
Furthermore we have tried to apply various traditional BW performance
tuning techniques including aggregates, physical partitioning and pre-
calculation - all without any luck (pre-calculation doesn't seem to
work at all as WebI apparently isn't using the BW OLAP cache).
In general the best result we can get is with a completely stripped WebI report without any variables etc.
and a total dataset of 1000 records transferred to WebI. Even in this scenario we can't get
each navigational step (when using drill-down on Organizational Unit
hierarchy - 0ORGUNIT) to perform faster than minimum 15-20 seconds per.
    navigational step.
That is each navigational step takes 15-20 seconds
with only 1000 records in the WebI cache when using drill-down on org.
    unit hierachy !!.
Running the same Bex query from Bex Analyzer with a full dataset of
30.000 records on lowest level of detail returns a threshold of 1-2
seconds pr. navigational step thus eliminating that this should be a BW
    modeling issue.
As our productive scenario obviously involves a far larger dataset as
well as separate data from CATS and PT infoproviders we are very
worried if we will ever be able to utilize hierarchy drill-down from
    WebI ?.
The question is as such if there are any known performance issues
related to the use of BW hierarchy drill-down from WebI and if so are
there any ways to get around them ?.
As an alternative we are currently considering changing our reporting
strategy by creating several higher aggregated reports to avoid
hierarchy navigation at all. However we still need to support specific
division and their need to navigate the WebI dataset without
limitations which makes this issue critical.
Hope that you are able to help.
    Thanks in advance
    /Frank

Hi Henry, thank you for your suggestions although i´m not agree with you that 20 seconds is pretty good for that navigation step. The same query executed with BEx Analyzer takes only 1-2 seconds to do the drill down.
    Actions
suppress unassigned nodes in RSH1: Magic!! This was the main problem!!
tick use structure elements in RSRT: Done it.
enable query stripping in WebI: Done it.
upgrade your BW to SP09: Has the SP09 some inprovements in relation to this point ?
use more runtime query filters. : Not possible. Very simple query.
    Others:
RSRT combination H-1-3-3-1 (Expand nodes/Permanent Cache BLOB)
Uncheck prelimirary Hierarchy presentation in Query. only selected.
Check "Use query drill" in webi properties.
Sorry for this mixed message but when i was answering i tryied what you suggest in relation with supress unassigned nodes and it works perfectly. This is what is cusing the bottleneck!! incredible...
    Thanks a lot

  • Shockwave Player and Safari

I was on a web site and received the message that to view certain content I would need to install Shockwave Player. I went to the Adobe site downloaded and installed the mac version. Everything seemed to install properly. When I went back to the site that I needed the player for I got a pop up message saying I needed to launch Safari in 32 bit mode. The problem is that when I click ok on this message Safari freezes, I can't relaunch it or close the window. So I force quit Safari from the Apple menu. If I then go to the finder and set Safari to open in 32 bit it will launch and display the content on that site properly. However I don't really want to keep Safari in 32 but if I don't, any site I go to that requires the player will now freeze Safari requiring me to force quit again.
So I ran the Shockwave uninstaller after which I can go to those sites but of course can't view the content but at least Safari doesn't freeze up. However I realized that at least that one site had worked in Firefox prior to my installing and uninstalling the player. Of course now even Firefox won't display that content since I've uninstalled it telling me I need a plugin but when I click that it tells me an applicable plugin cannot be found and that I will need to manually install one. Of course that would take me back to where I was with Safari freezing up on those sites unless it's already in 32 bit mode. I'm using Safari 5.0.1 on OS 10.6.4 Is there a way to rectify this short of always running Safari in 32 bit?

    It seems you're stuck: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/512/cpsid_51273.html
Further, "As of July 2010, Adobe has not announced future plans for 64-bit native Shockwave Players."
I'm not sure it's worth installing it again. If it were just a matter of launching Safari in 32 bit mode I might do it if it were something I really wanted to see but since Safari always freezes after that pop up message requiring me to force quit, it seems like too much of a hassle to me.

  • Adobe Flash Player and Safari

    Hello everybody,
I bought new MacBook Pro 13'' last July 2012.
For the past week I can not suddenly view presentations and videos. I have installed adobe flash player (program recommended by Apple).
My second problem is that when I try to open safari get an error "safari quit unexpectedly '
Please ask for help. Do not know what to do.
    Thank you very much indeed
    Latertulia

    Not to polemic or anything...
Here is a quote from another link in this forum that also lays the blame on Apple.
Apple has publicly stated that they don't want flash "lite"
    1) Funny that the maker of Safari "lite", has an issue with Adobe making Flash "lite"
    2) Since Apple has never pointed the finger at Adobe, it's no surprise that Adobe will not develop software that would have no access to the App Store (Controlled by Apple)

  • Flash player  and safari updates

I have Safari 5.0.4 installed my version of flash player is 10,1,102.64 the Adobe website say this is what they detect they also say I need version 10.2.152.33 do i have to uninstall the old version or just download the newer one

well, I know everyone has their own opinion on flash player. If you need it, you need it. My understanding is that flash player "should" be uninstalled first before updating. Depending on what version you have installed, sometimes you will find and Adobe Flash Player uninstaller in your utilities folder (deposited by your last install of flash player if you downloaded the dmg file from Adobe). On rare occasions, Apple has included a flash player update (built into something else), but only on occasion.
The benefit from using "the latest" version of flash player is that you get the security updates built into that version. Depending on your risk factor, you will have to decide to update or not. At some point, if you do not update for a long time, you will get prompted by a site that needs that latest version to run it's content properly. Note, if you are running a PPC machine, you only have archived versions available..

  • Poor performance by Matlab and Windows benchmark tests

    Hello
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W520 with Windows 7 64bit installed. Compared to other Notebooks with comparable hardware, my Lenovo is very slow. To prove my thought, I carried through a Matlab (64bit) benchmark test and the Windows 7 benchmark test. In both tests, my Lenovo was worse than the other notebooks. During the tests I set the Power Manager to performance and activated the Lenovo turbo boost.
Now I want to ask, if there are any settings, perhaps in the bios, to speed the laptop up? Or why result such a bad performance although the hardware is very good?
    Thanks for your help
    Solved!

Thank you very much for your reply!
I dated up the BIOS from version 1.27 to 1.32. Now the benchmark tests all look great!!
    Thanks

  • Poor performance with Yosemite and early 2009 Mac Pro

I have an early 2009 Mac Pro with the following specs:
    - 2.66 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
    - 10 GB of 1066 MHz RAM
    - NVidia GeForce GT 120 512 MB
    - 256 MB solid state drive for my system partition
    - Two monitors connected, each at 1680x1050 resolution
Back when I was running OS X 10.7 or 10.8 I found that for every day tasks the performance using my computer was adequate. However, starting around 10.9, and even worse since upgrading to 10.10, thinks have gotten painfully slow. To give an example, activating Mission Control can take upwards of four seconds, with the animation being very choppy. Changing tabs on a Finder window can take two seconds for the switch to happen. Just switching between different windows, it can take several seconds for a window to activate. It's gotten to the point where I'm having difficulty working. So I'm thinking of upgrading some of my hardware.
Given my specs the weakest link seems to be my graphics card, and all of these issues do seem to be related to graphics. So my questions are:
    - Do you think upgrading my graphics card will substantially improve things, and is there anything else I should upgrade?
    - Is this slowness just the result of the computer being nearly six years old, and no upgrades will really improve things that much?
    Thanks in advance!

Between Setup Assistant, and your existing system "untouched" (or use CCC if say you want to use an existing SSD for the system) there is no reason it should be a lot of work setting up. Have you ever used Migration or Setup? it has also gotten better.
Also, having 10.9.5 on another drive and running DU - and TRIM _now_ would be helpful.
Looking at just what gremlins you have running around inside your current system is not bad but.... sometimes the "long road" turns a shortcut into a dead end, and avoiding doing what seems the long road and hardest gets you where you want to go: a solid stable system.
Less is more. Most systems have more than needed and they get in the way and can cause trouble. Even handy "widgets" and those things that monitor system functions, even disk status. Which is why I like seeing a separate small system maintenance volume just for the weekly checkup. 30GB is more than enough so just slice out a partition somewhere - on another drive/device.
Those things, more so than and a lot cheaper than a new GPU. If  your SSD is two years old, the 840 EVO from Samsung is down under $120 for 250GB, or use one for Lightroom / Aperture / iPhoto or scratch.
One person was complaining about sluggish window issue and thought it was the driver. Turned out It happened in ONE APP, not everywhere - very telling - and the app in question needs update. Adobe updated CC (for Windows) last month to finally support dual Dxx and some of the newer AMD GPUs - can the mac be far behind?
10GB RAM? that would not be 3 x 4GB or any combination using triple channel memory.

  • Poor performance after format and OS install.

    GT70 0ne
    3610qm
    680m
    24g Kingston ram
    Win7 64
Yesterday I formatted my drive and installed win7 64, after installing all the (old) drivers on the MSI website (link below), in the correct order, then waiting a good 8 hours for all the windows updates to install, I booted up WoW and found horrible FPS. I ran 3dmarks 11 and scored a dismal 2600 with my graphic and combined scores around 2500 and the physics at the normal 8500.
Searched online for some solutions, put the 680m as the default for WoW and 3dmarks but with no difference. I went ahead and got the latest drivers for the 680m off the Nvidia website and saw no improvement.
I did not install any utilities from the MSI website, are any of them needed for the proper function of the laptop or are they all fluff?
I did not install any firmware either, Is it needed?
Should I download the latest drivers for all the components or stick with MSI's?
The laptop itself is extremely quick when not needing graphical power.
    Thank you.

The following factors will affect the performance score:
    - Using AC or DC.
    - Power plans (Windows). High-performance or Balanced mode.
    - Numbers of background processes.
    - Wi-Fi/BT on or off.
    - Improvements from newer BIOS, EC, or Video BIOS versions.
    - Screen brightness (slightly affected).
Your score is indeed a little lower. Check the points above to improve it.

  • Poor performance in iMovie and iDVD in the UK. Anyone noticed?

    Hello everyone,
I've made several very successful DVDs using stills for UK TVs with the PAL format, 1280 x 720 pixels. I'm running iLife 06, latest everything for Tiger.
I use Keynote - export to Quicktime, custom settings, HDV 720p, Apple intermediate codec, 25 fps, for graphical introduction pieces.
I also use Photo 2 Movie for the stills with pan & scan etc., again Pal format, exported for iMovie.
These elements are then dropped into an iMovie project for the relevant subject and audio added. This project is then saved as a Full Quality QuickTime movie and dropped into a final assembly iMovie project, which is in turn sent to iDVD. This keeps the visual timeline manageably short.
On my last projects, this gave a stunning result. 4 Quicktime upgrades later and using the same procedure, motion now seems slightly jerky even though all the frame rates for PAL are correct. Before I complete the project, has anyone else noticed this drop in quality? I don't want to waste time if I should be doing something differently.
I've also noticed that once again, you can't use purchased music in an iMovie project - it freezes the video. Apple had this bug before and fixed it, now it's back. I don't know whether the two are connected.
Can anyone give me any advice? Thanks.

Why are you making a HD project if you then burn it as standard definition DVD via iDVD?
iDVD has to downsample the HD to SD. I haven't experimented how well iDVD manages to do that.
Have you tried to do a standard definition iMovie PAL project and feed that to a PAL iDVD project? Yes, I strongly recommend using Photo To Movie's High Quality PAL DV export for the slideshows because iMovie's slideshows are, erm, suboptimal in quality.

  • DivX "for Mac" and Safari -- anyone get it to work on Snow Leopard?

Pardon me for the length of this post --  it's just a very involved question to which DivX has no answers, and I've literally wasted this entire week trying to get the so-called DivX "Bundle for Mac" to work, with absolutely no joy.
    27" iMac Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz, 12 GB RAM, OS X 10.6.7
    Safari (v. 5.0.5 [6533.21.1])
    Safari Extensions:
    DivX HiQ 2.1.1.94
    DivX Plus Web Player HTML5 <video> 2.1.1.94
As anyone who has used YouTube in the past year or however long this option has been available, many videos, under the regular YouTube control bar at the bottom of the video window, have an additional option: DivX HiQ, with a blue "play" button with black arrow, and in white text on black, the message "Press play for higher quality video." EVERY SINGLE time, until yesterday (about which more anon) I've selected DivX HiQ, the YouTube screen turns into the gray DivX Plus player window for a few seconds, sometimes I get a brief "Buffering…" message (sometimes not)* (see below), then a window pops up telling me "DivX Plus Web Player could not download the video, please check your internet connection." (screen shots on request).
I have DL'd AND installed -- several times over the past few days -- DivX for Mac, version 7.3 (right up-to-date as of 11-30-10 -- great support for the Mac OS), with little or no success or noticeable results. Finally, yesterday, it somehow (I thought) installed correctly: at least instead of nothing whatsoever happening after the install, this time I was whisked magically away to <<http://www.divx.com/en/software/download/installed/mac?os=mac>> where I was rather breathlessly informed "Congratulations! You can now enjoy the highest quality digital video | divx.com." Well, this was something new -- this was the first time I'd ever gotten this far. Then I was shown many movies, promising new marvels:
The first movie informed me "You have successfully installed DivX software." This WAS something new. Then it told me about the "DivX Plus Web Player… Now Featuring: DivX HiQ… Boost web video quality and performance… … Look for the DivX HiQ Button on your favorite video sites… see better quality and performance with a simple click… Try it out on your favorite sites… YouTube. Vimeo. And more.
Then I played the NEXT movie, all about the DivX Plus Player, and here I TRULY saw something I'd never seen before: *a DivX Plus Player window, that actually said " Connecting… Buffering: … " and then -- mirabile dictu! -- an actual video began to play, and actually continued to play, with no stops, fits, or error windows, right up until the end. This WAS something new under the sun. It continued, extolling the manifold virtues of "DivX to go," which was of no use to me. The next video was about the DivX Plus Codec Pack, and the video told me about the wonderful things DivX could do in Windows 7, if I was brain-dead enough to USE Windows 7. Useless info, but that video, too, opened up the way I believe the *HiQ videos are supposed to open up in YouTube, for example: "Connecting… Buffering: …," and then actually opening and playing. BTW, I hate to sound like a troglodytic Luddite, but I have no idea what "MKV" video is.
The final video, which ALSO opened up the way I believe the *HiQ videos are supposed to open up in YouTube, for example: "Connecting… Buffering: …," spoke to me about the manifold joys of DivX Plus converter, which ALSO requires the DivX Player application, and since the DivX Player application (v.7.2 (build 10_0_0_184, Copyright © 2006-2009 DivX, Inc.), which, I was given to understand, was actually a PART of the DivX software I had finally "successfully installed" (according to divx.com's delirious greeting), has never worked, none of what all these videos talked about was going to do me much good. HOW has it never worked, you ask? It has never worked in this way: I click on the DivX Player app icon, the DivX Player window opens, and the Mac OS beach ball spins merrily away, and spins, and spins, and spins -- at this point, I usually go to the kitchen for another cup of the strengthening coffee and the hopefully headache-reducing ibuprofen. When I come back, the beach ball is still spinning, so, resignedly, I go to the "Force Quit" command, where, invariably, I see the message "DivX Player not responding," and, resignedly, I force quit it. Again. This scenario has occurred without variation every single time I've tried to open the DivX Player application. It has never actually opened correctly, it has always shown up in the "Force Quit" window with the comment "DivX Player not responding," and I have always had to Force Quit it.
Now Here's what may be termed the icing on the cake: fairly well buried in the "DivX for Mac" install package is a pdf "read me." Among many other fables is THIS whopper:
"For online video tutorials visit the following URL in your web browser: http://go.divx.com/mac/tutorials"
I did just that, and though the link works, there IS no page on the DivX site for "Mac tutorials." When you click on the link, you get redirected to "http://support.divx.com/faq/view/supportFAQen100/video_tutorials_main." Except for a video tutorial under "DivX Converter_ -- for which I have no use -- entitled "How To Edit Your DivX Converter for Mac Output Settings," and these two: "How To Export To DivX In Final Cut Pro for Mac," and "How To Export To DivX Using QuickTime On A Mac" -- neither of which do me the slightest bit of good, since A) I don't use, nor can I afford, Final Cut Pro, and B) what good would it to to export ANYTHING to DivX when the DivX Player for Mac does not, and has never, done anything but hang until Force Quitted?
A brief digression on that very subject of "hanging:" there's a little section in the obscure "DivX for Mac" pdf that reads:
    "5. Known issues
Network connection is lost during download
A lost network connection in the middle of a download may hang the DivX Player For Mac. If this occurs, you may 'Force Quit' the DivX Player For Mac by simultaneously clicking command-option-escape and selecting the application from the list or by right-clicking the icon in the dock and selecting 'Force Quit.' You may then resume the download by re-launching the DivX Player, selecting 'Download Manager” from the File menu and clicking 'Resume.'"
Wonderful advice, if I could ever get to the point where I was actually downloading something, but since MY particular edition of DivX Player for Mac saves me all that bother by hanging immediately upon launch, DivX has very kindly saved me the trouble of having to go through all that "Force Quit" - "Resume" nonsense. Of course, I never get to download anything or use the DivX Player on YouTube or anywhere else, so that's a bit of a downside.
So back to the putative "Mac tutorials" on the non-existent "http://go.divx.com/mac/tutorials" page: other than the three totally non-germane examples I cited above, there is nothing that I can find on the re-direct page (http://support.divx.com/faq/view/supportFAQen100/video_tutorials_main) that is the least concerned with the usage or behavior of any component of DivX on a Macintosh computer. That's certainly not uncommon, but for a company that purports to sell products that actually work on the Mac OS X platform, EVERYTHING about the DivX site is so totally Windows-centric, one would be inclined to believe that DivX is not even aware the Mac OS X platform exists. For example, here's the list of tutorials under "DivX 101 - Learn How" on the page that, according to the DivX for Mac Read Me, was supposed to solve all my problems with running DivX on a Mac:
    Featured Video Tutorials
How to register your PS3 for DivX VOD playback
How do I make DivX player my default video player?
How to register your DivX Certified device with the DivX Plus Player
How to stream DivX Plus HD (MKV) files to your Xbox 360
How to use the DivX Plus Converter
    Featured Text Guides
DivX Plus Converter for Windows User Guide
DivX Plus Player for Windows User Guide
    DivX Codec 5.x User Guide
DivX Codec 6 and Virtual Dub Guide
It's wonderful that DivX has tutorials dealing with XBox360 and PS3, but the Mac seems to have been lost in the shuffle -- I think, from an aesthetic point, the guy in the sideways hat and the emphasis on animé and "blow 'em up" games in what few tutorials are actually there pretty much sums up DivX's idea of their market focus. Maybe they're right, but if this "free" version, that so far I have not been able to get to work as advertised on my 27" iMac, is supposed to entice any Mac user into forking over even the piddling $20.00 for the "Pro" version, the "free" version isn't DivX any "gotta have it" favors.
Now for the final mystery: I have two Safari -- v5.0.5 (6533.21.1) -- extensions from DivX:
    1. DivX HiQ 2.1.1.94, which is supposed to allow you to watch videos on YouTube, Vimeo, etc. in the DivX Player for Mac, but refuses to work when enabled: EVERY SINGLE time I've selected DivX HiQ, the YouTube screen turns into the gray DivX player window for a few seconds, then an error window pops up that says "DivX Plus Web Player could not download the video, please check your internet connection."
    2. DivX Plus Web Player HTML5 <video> 2.1.1.94, the little blurb in the Safari Extensions window for which says "Increase performance and video formats for your HTML5 <video>
Clicking on the "by DivX, Inc." link in the Safari Extensions window of either of these extensions takes me to http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus/web-player
"High-quality video shouldn’t stop at your browser. DivX Plus® Web Player gives you the best web video performance around, even on sites using Flash®. The latest feature, DivX HiQ™ beta, lets you replace the default Flash player on popular sites for improved performance. Of course you can still watch stunning DivX® and DivX Plus HD (MKV) videos right in your browser, and even enjoy MKV features like multiple audio tracks, subtitles and 5.1 channel AAC audio."
That's all well and good, but, not when it doesn't work. I don't know what the story is with these Safari Extensions: a manual (unfortunately the only way you can do it), category by category search of Apple's "Safari Extensions Gallery" turns up NO information about these extensions, neither does -- as far as I can tell -- a search of the DivX site. Am I supposed to use BOTH extensions? Neither? One or the other? Which? So far, if I use them, I get the HiQ option in YouTube (and elsewhere), but when I click on it, I get the error message above, and the window reverts to the usual plain old YouTube window. If I disable the DivX Safari extensions, I don't even get the HiQ option.
Has ANYONE gotten the DivX for Mac Bundle v7.1, or even the DivX Plus Web Player for Mac, v2.1.1, to actually work on a Mac running OS X 10.6.7?
If so, PLEASE tell me how you got it to work.
I'd gladly for over the 20 bucks for this product if it actually worked, but not until it does.
    Bart Brown

Well, I can start banging my head against the brick wall again.
"I have never knowingly come across Divx in any shape or form. YouTube uses either Flash or HTML5."
I don't understand how you can make that statement, considering the discussion you participated in at:

You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs. In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/"

    Hi,
Thanks for your answer.

It could be that your previous DivX player was out of date.
As Perian says, you need both.
First, I certainly wish you (or my search of Apple Discussions, which, inexplicably, did not turn up this discussion) had referred me to this discussion before -- it would have saved a LOT of time.
Now, to your reply to Philippe Pauwels:  "As Perian says, you need both." Both WHAT, exactly?
From the initial release of Perian 0.5, September 29, 2006, to the latest release, Perian 1.2.2 - Tuesday, April 13, 2011, there is not a single mention of DivX in the entire 2006 to 2011 version history. The only information on the Perian support page regarding DivX is the paragraph that states, in part, "Please consider removing obsolete QuickTime Components: ...DivX, DivX Decoder..."
Can you please tell me what you mean by "Perian says, you need both," in regard to putative DivX Extensions, Plug-Ins, Components, whatever?
Finally, on July 12, 2009, you posted, in a reply to martin Alper, a list of  "the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear/play pretty much everything that the net can throw at you." Taking into consideration that it's 2 years later and most versions have newer updates -- including Mac OS X itself -- some items are no longer among us, and some NEW ones have shown up. could you please update or comment on this list, for the benefit of all sufferers?
    Thank you very much,
    Bart Brown
Your list as of July 12, 2009, taking into consideration your wise caveat that "nothing in life carries a guarantee!:
The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3 and 4, QT 7.4.x, 7.5.x and 7.6 and OS 10.4.11 and 10.5.7.
Download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 11.1 for Mac from:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15540
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
The latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer can be obtained from here:
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlas h
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.
It is suggested that you first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
You should also ensure that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2009-001 (and for Tiger only, 2009-002). (N.B. Security Updates require both a restart and a permission repair.)
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back, as the lack of this plug-in can cause QT content in some widgets to cease functioning.
And there is an additional kid on the block: SilverLight. Microsoft has created their own version of what a replacement for Flash could be. You can read more about it here:
    http://silverlight.net/
So, if you go to any sites that have been designed for this new Silverlight stuff, you can download the plug-in from here (but make certain that you are downloading SilverLight v.1.0 for OS X (10.4.8 upwards) if you are using a PPC Mac. Version 2 only works with Intel Macs:
    http://silverlight.net/GetStarted/
Recommendation: Close all applications before installing any of the above, repair permissions, reboot, and repair permissions again.
    Thanks again
    Bart Brown
PS: You wrote "It is a pity you chose a camera that produces video in that format! As you have discovered it is incompatible with iMovie." Uhh, I don't know where this question came from -- more stray copying and pasting, perhaps? I have no camera, and am not trying to do anything pertinent to this discussion with iMovie.

  • Poor performance of Premiere Pro on 2013 Mac Pro

A month ago I bought a 2013 Mac Pro mostly for running Premiere Pro CC. The configuration is 6 cores @ 3.5 GHz, 64 GB RAM, 2 x D700 graphics, 1 TB internal SSD. It runs OS X Mavericks 10.9.4.
I tried Premiere Pro CC today for the first time. The input--entirely stored on the internal SSD; no external disk was even connected--was about 100 clips shot as AVCHD (1080p25 PAL) at 24 Mbps.
I edited this in Premiere Pro and added small adjustments (mostly changes of levels) in about 20 clips. The rest had no adjustments. There were no transitions applied. For the most part, it just had to copy the trimmed input clips to the output.
I queued this for Adobe Media Encoder CC at H.264, 1080p25, @ 24 Mbps VBR 2 pass. Audio was 192 kbps, 48 kHZ,stereo. The output was written to the internal SSD.
While encoding, the CPU was running 50-70% idle (!!!) so it was using only 2-3 cores and half the memory (32GB) was unused. It certainly wasn't trying very hard. No other programs except Premiere, AME, and the activity monitor were open during encoding and I was just sitting there watching it lumber along.
The time to encode the timeline of 9:47 was 21:28. That is 2.2x real time. My 4-year-old Windows machine using CS6 could do that. What's wrong? Should Premiere Pro be this slow on hardware this fast? Is there some secret box "Use all the cores and all allowed memory" that I have to check (I set the preferences to allow Adobe to use 52 GB). Does Premiere get tired in the evenings? The internal SSD runs at 900 MB/s and there was no transcoding to do. What was going on?
This is my first test of Premiere and it is kind of disappointing. Did I just waste 6500 euros on the Mac Pro or am I using the wrong settings. Any advice is welcome.
    Thanks.

Yes, should be great if someone put some light in all this performance thing in the new mac pro, I just did a test, 3 video tracks with 4K Red footage, 50% of opacity each one and I just play the 2 min sequence, and Premiere started to drop frames at half resolution playback and when I changed to full resolution playback the sequence was unplayable, I mean, they sold this MacPro/Premiere workflow as the way to edit 4K without compromises and now we are not capable to deliver jobs because the poor performance... and I'm not talking now about the constant crashes and freezes, I'm talking about that we can't play just 3 tracks without any effect.
Would be great if someone put some light on this, maybe we are blaming adobe and it's apple's fault and we should go to the apple store to return the machine... I did test on the Mac and looks OK, I'm more than confuse about this...
