Poor playback of AfterEffects comp in PP5.5

I'm throwing this out to the post Yoda's to give me a better workflow or tell me what I'm doing wrong.
I'm colour grading a few personal projects using Colorista2 but that plugin only works properly in After Effects.  My workflow has been:
Edit in PP5.5
Import Premiere Pro Project into After Effects 5.5
Apply Colorista2 and grade all the clips
Save After Effects project (.aep)
Import the .aep file into Premiere and drop the comp onto a timeline.
The result is that I'm getting playback frame rates of .25-1fps unless I render it out.  Source files are either 100Mb/s MXF files or Red R3D 2K/4K media (red rocket card is installed on system).
I'm getting the same playback speed of After Effects comps if I 'replace with after effects comp'.
Is this to be expected or is there something I can do better?
Cheers!

Is this to be expected or is there something I can do better?
Expected. Dynamic Link is more about accessibility and flexibility than speed. Basic comps, like simple text animations, will often play in real-time, but a processor-intensive effect like Colorista will slay that. Add it to hefty media like 100Mbps MXFs or R3D, and you can fuggedaboutit

  • Poor playback of TV Shows in iTunes

    Hello.
I am having a problem with poor playback pf TV Shows downloaded from iTunes. Recently the Lost TV Show, Season 3, has been skipping in both Quicktime and iTunes.
I am running all the newest software.
    I have a G4 PowerBook.
    1.5 GHz PowerPC G4
    768 MB DDR SDRAM
20 GB of free space on the Hard Drive
This computer is pretty new and should be able to handle this.
Is this a known issue? Is there a fix?
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Tom

I have been on the chopped video trail now for months.
Thinking the issue was solved after I had a power supply replaced at the local genius bar.
The apple repair guy was convinced I had some bad RAM and he took it out.
My video was playing smooth as silk with the original 512 MB RAM.
However I wanted to have another Gig of RAM, so I purchased 1-Gig from Apple.
Installed it myself, Video still smooth with no problems.
About two weeks later the chopped playback returned.
I have not removed the new 1-Gig RAM to see if it is the culprit.
    Update pending......

  • Very poor Playback of imported image sequence

    Hello,
I really tried to work around this problem but I'm resigned to see that premiere pro seems to handle very bad the playback of imported sequence of numbered stills.
I began with premiere elements. I imported my footage as image sequence (from 3dsmax), and saw that the playback was poor. It seemed to be playable after background rendering was finished, but BG rendering is soooo long due to an issue with nvidia hardware. So I'm forced to disable BG rendering, but the problem is that the sequence go unplayable again, etc, etc.
I decided to install premiere pro cs5 trial to test, thinking that it will definitively fix the problem,
but... same poor, almost unusable playback with numbered stills.
I have a strong hardware (dual xeon 5650, quadro 4000, 48gb ram), so I think it's not the cause.
I disable my antivirus while using premiere.
Video sequences (avi, mov, etc), play smoothly, but when you work with CG 3D footage, you always export in image sequences, and I want to be able to edit my footages in premiere, as compositing softwares aren't built for the same kind of tasks.
After effects plays images sequences very smoothly, so why not premiere?
I did convert my image sequences to avi or mov uncompressed, but even with no compression, there's a significant loss of quality, and I want to avoid this loss to be able to edit my footage and output my final video based on the best image quality possible.
    Thank you for answering

You did not mention your disk setup.
Playing back numbered image sequences at high resolution is
probably the most disk IO intensive thing you can ask Premiere to do.
Without a dedicated RAID controller and multi-disk setup, you will likely be
forced to timeline preview render all your image sequences for real time playback.
After effects plays images sequences very smoothly, so why not premiere?
AE will not play image sequences in real time until you render a RAM preview.
I did convert my image sequences to avi or mov uncompressed, but even with no compression, there's a significant loss of quality...
There will be no loss of quality if you use a lossless codec for your
digital intermediate file (i.e. Lagarith or UT), and these uncompressed files
will play smoothly in Premiere without needing to render timeline previews.

  • Poor playback after upgrading to FCP7

Recently I upgraded from FCP6 to FCP7.  With version 6, my playback was excellent.  After the upgrade, NOTHING plays smoothly at all... not even a lone, simple aif. file on the timeline.  In fact, even that stutters, plays slow and drops frames.

    Hi Michael...
It's a Mac Pro running Mountain Lion, 10.8.2.
    Processor: 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory: 6 GB
    NIVDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
Video was caputured as ProRes 422, but with the upgrade now to ProRes LT.
    Sequence settings:
    Frame Size: 1920x1080 / HDTV 1080i (16:9)
    Square
QT Video Settings: Compressor - Apple ProRes 422 (LT) @ 100% quality
Audio settings: 48kHz, 16-bit, channel grouped
Video processing @ always render in RGB
Why I can't even playback a simple audio file is frustrating!  Playback in the viewer is also very, very poor.

  • Poor Playback in Program

    Greetings,
I'm running FCE and I have a playback issue for the first time. Whenever I press play to watch my current projects, the playback is choppy. The indicator on the timeline chops--it does not run smoothly--and thus my playback is poor. This is the first time this has happened and I'm really confused.
All programs are off; GB and RAM are plentiful. Nothing has changed since I last used the program. Any thoughts?

    Sean
Check that the Canvas and Viewer are set to Fit To Window.

  • I have a lumix GH3 camera and I am trying to edit but I get poor playback when effects added?

I am using a Lumix GH3 camera and recording in .mov at 50fps progressive and 50mbps.  My computer is a macbook pro two years old with 2.2ghz intel core i7 and 8gb of ram (1333 MHz DDR3).
The footage plays fine in the editing suite until I add an effect then the playback is extremely slow and jerky even after render.  Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?  I am new to PPCC and I've just moved from FCP 7 as it didn't recognise the footage at all.
    Cheers for any advice

There is a list of approved graphics cards for Premiere Pro. http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/tech-specs.html
Your card is on the list as an OpenCL compatible card. You need to make sure that your card is recognized by Premiere Pro and that you have your settings right in order to take advantage of it.

  • Dvd play back on Tv is 4:3 , also poor  playback quality

I recently purchased a jvc everio HDD, Along with that I purchased elements 7.  I am having many issues with the software. I am new to editing but have researched all the posts and done alot of home work. I have read the all the post about mod files. But I am more confused
Issue one... When I burn a dvd and play it back on any dvd player the video is compressed back to a 4:3 aspect. I have noticed that the video is squeezed and everything appears to be skinny when viewing.
To clarify , My camera films in 16:9 ratio. When I set up My new project I choose . Hard disk/widescreen (this setting say it is for video files produced by jvc everio). When Ii am done I choose burn/dolby widescreen.
when I import my video clips to my pc, it saves them as mov.files. which I understand is a quicktime format... is this causeing the issue.
I was convinced it was a camera issue. So I burnt some clips using my pc burner program and played them on my tv and they were in 16:9 and played just fine and the video looked amazing..
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Issue two.... When I bring my video's in I loose alot of quality.  Also my clips hae glitches in them , some are green clitches and others are neg art of other clips . I played back on my media player ,these glitches are not there.
    ~~~~~~~~~
Issue three..... When I import my clips , the PRE viewer is very pixelly ( like really bad webcam bad) it is so bad that I actually took the sony camcorder back, thinking that the issue was my camera. I then exchanged for the jvc..... I have watched many utube tutorials on youtube... and have been able to see that the players are not as pixelly as mine....
Help....... I am so frustrated with purchaseing software and having problems.

With MOD files are imported into Premiere Elements they are not properly interpreted as 16:9... they will appear as 4:3 on the timeline and if burnt to DVD will play back as 4:3. You need to right click on the clips in the project Media Panel and select Interpret footage and then Conform To and select the 16:9 widescreen preset.
Not sure why it is saying the videos are .mov files, did you do ant conversion before importing. Regarding the glitchy distorted frames, try renaming the file  in the Program Files folder for Premier Elements "ImporterFastMPEG.prm" to something else. PE7 will not use it then and this should eliminate you bad frame problems.
The Premiere Elements viewer does not show the final quality of the video but should not be that bad. Did you render the timeline by pressing the Enter button on your keyboard... this needs to be done for non DV-AVI format video or when you place effects/transitions/title on the clips. The clips will playback without rendering but playback will be much smoother and cleaning after rendering.
Most of these issues can be overcome be converting your video to DV-AVI before importing to Premiere Elements. The "box" says PE7 plays with many file types but it struggles with many and MOD files is one format that it does struggle with. DV-AVI is handled natively and gives no problems. Can you import the clips into the software that came with the camcorder and export to DV-AVI? Otherwise you could use MPEG_Streamclip to convert them. http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415317?tstart=0
Also a lot of these issues are discussed in this thread. Dont know if you saw this one. http://forums.adobe.com/message/1757486#1757486

  • Mpeg 4 - poor playback performance since Tiger/QT7

    Hello!
Since my Update to Tiger/Quicktime 7 my .mp4 movie playback is very slow - from 0,02 fps to a few fps. I tried a lot of movies - with the same results.
Movie size is 720xabout450, Audio AAC, Video Mpeg 4 (made with 3ivx - mp4-compatible).
With Panther/QT6 with or without the 3ivx QT plugin everything worked fine.
    Removing all 3rd-party QT-plugins (incl. 3ivx) didn't help.
System is iBook G3/800, 640 MB RAM.
    Any idea?
    No.

I've found that movie playback in QuickTime 7 takes about 5% more CPU time than it did in QuickTime 6. That's 5% regardless of the codec you use. While that may not sound like much, if you were previously close to the edge of acceptable playback this change can make a surprising difference in results. You can go from mildly choppy playback to something that might occasionally fall to one half of your previous frame rate. In some cases it's not a slowly decreasing playback quality, but more like falling off of a ledge.
You might also want to investigate to see if any background tasks are running that weren't present under Panther. Widgets would be the first thing to check. They shouldn't be a problem until you've launched Dashboard for the first time after a reboot, but thereafter they can cause problems (normally nothing to worry about, but I have seen a few cases of "runaway" widgets).<small><hr width="75%"><small>If this suggestion helps in any way, a confirmation or acknowledgment would be appreciated, since that would also help others who may be having the same difficulty. • Animation Files have poor playback in a DV-NTSC sequence... Why?

So I have a DV-NTSC sequence and I have some animation files. When I put the animation files into the sequence the animations don't playback smoothly or export smoothly (even when I export as an animation). The animation frame-rate is 23.98 and so is the sequence...
The files also need to be an animation to hold their transparency.
Any ideas? I already thrashed my prefs... ect. And that didn't seem to solve the problem.

Assuming the animation files are generated ok, putting them on a DV timeline, will force them to be converted to DV on the fly. This puts a huge load on the CPU. Render the entire sequence with the animation in it, and see if that doesn't cure the problem.

  • Choppy Videos and poor playback quality

I have a problem with the TV shows im trying to play in itunes. The audio runs at the correct speed and sounds fine, but the video is choppy and wont sync with the audio that is playing at the correct. I thought the problem was with my computer but i recently restored my computer to the original factory settings with Vista. I Tunes is the only program that is giving me trouble with my video playback. Any Advise?

DFW, does your computer meet the minimum specifications for playing videos in iTunes (as given on the iTunes download page)?
2.0 GHz Pentium class processor or better
    512MB RAM
    32MB video RAM
If it does, take a look here and see if any of the tips help:
Troubleshooting iTunes for Windows Vista video playback performance issues
    Good luck.

  • QTime Player Crashes with Buffer overun or causes poor playback

I'm having quicktime issues, these have been ongoing for a long time. But I just updated to the latest version and I have the most current drivers loaded on my system.

You're having the same issue as I...see my post here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=672272&tstart=30

  • Extremely poor playback fps

I'm right on the final parts of a project for a client and have found that all of a sudden Motion 3 refuses to play anything back at a usable frame rate. I'm getting a maximum of 9 fps, regardless of how simple the footage is. Previously I'd be able to play back footage with filters at minimum of 14fps, but its now dropped to like 2 or 1 fps, making doing simple things like fades in and outs virtually impossible.
I thought it might have been the upgrade to QT 7.5.5, but I rolled that back and am still experiencing major difficulties. I have turned off all the things in the View menu that are supposed to affect performance with no noticeable difference. Any ideas?

    When apple posts the following...
"This release is recommended for all QuickTime 7 users.
QuickTime 7.5.5 includes changes that increase reliability, improve application compatibility and enhance security."
    Read it here...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime755forleopard.html
A user would assume that Apple would test such a critical core OS component such as Quicktime, that it would test against their Pro Applications that require Quicktime.
Apple needs to start TESTING their applications and releasing once thoroughly tested. Stop getting pushing things out the door and using the us as beta testers. This is not a debate about why someone upgraded. The point is this update breaks pro apps in a clean environment. Even after a clean install with no third party applications.
I am tired of people blaming users. This is a SUPPORT area. Apple needs to start supporting the users and provide useful feedback and real responses to solve outstanding issues.

  • Poor playback sound on Recorded Classes

Hi, I have recorded a few classes and the audio on the recording is much lower than the audio was during the actual class, to the point where it's almost not functional. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?
    Thanks for any insight!

Were you using a headphone and microphone headset or using the computer mic and speakers? I think it has to do with that.
    Suggested best practices:
Always use a headset designed for VOIP. Never rely on PC/Mac mices and Speakers
Suggest you use an external webcam as the built in webcams are pretty low quality. For example, Apple's iSight webcam built into many MacBook Pros is OK....but just OK.....when I use my Logitech C910 HD webcam instead the picture is wider and much better definition. You get what you pay for!
Always...ALWAYS...ALWAYS....use the audio setup wizard to make sure the room and your PC/Mac are in sync with each other
Mute everyone else so there is sound from anyone else
ALWAYS...use a wired connection.....NEVER rely on a wi-fi or mi-fi connection as the host or presenter....highly risky just from security and performance reasons. Use wi-fi or mi-fi in an emergency but don't blame the web conference solution when your experience is less than expected
Always have another PC/Mac logged on as host so in case your first computer has an issue you can quickly switch to the other....just a handy tip that has worked for me very well

  • Poor streaming playback on external monitor

    Hi guys,
I never thought I would post here but the problem has gotten too annoying to ignore anymore. I have a 2008 Macbook with 4gb ram, 2.4ghz core 2 duo processor and os x 10.6.8.
I am experiencing poor playback where the video stutters/lags/skips. Usually the audio is out of sync with the video and the video looks as though it accelerates and decelerates. This happens on the macbook screen but also is especially pronounced when using an external monitor. I have the problem on youtube and netflix and am running the latest flash/silverlight plugins on firefox.
I didn't seem to have this problem before so am wondering if something may have changed. It's so annoying I am tempted to buy a new macbook but I am sure there is some kind of fix somewhere? I have a 60mbps internet connnection so it's not that, and if I play a DVD or .mpeg file, the playback is flawless.
    Any ideas?

In FCP, go to view>refresh A/V devices
    Then go View>External Video>all frames.

  • Why the extremely poor sound quality in playback with itunes?

I am having problems with the sound quality of itunes music. this applies to both downloads and cd's. This problem is new, I believe, and affects bluetooth speaker, earphones, and macbook pro internal speaker. All have extremely poor playback with itunes. This Problem does not happen with playback of youtube videos.
Thanks for any advice you can give.

I would be worth playing some tracks with Quicktime so see what the quality is like there.
iTunes uses Quicktime to play music.
