Poor print resolution

I'm new to InDesign (CS2). I have a black and white PhotoShop file (a floor plan originally created in AutoCAD) which prints just fine in PhotoShop, but when I place the file in my InDesign document, the print resolution is terrible (same printer). When printing from InDesign, I'm selecting the highest quality for the printer, although I don't find any resolution setting for PhotoShop itself.
I've been struggling for a couple of days with this and I'm very frustrated. Any ideas out there? Thanks so much for any help!

Wow! That was it, of course. Thanks. I wonder, though, why that wouldn't have been the default setting. Oh well, new software--gotta expect some rough spots. It's going well, all things considered. THANK YOU Bob!

How to improve pdf export/print resolution?

I'm getting very poor pdf resolution even at "best" setting in an export from Pages '09; it looks to be exactly the same low quality as you get with Print>pdf. Has anyone else had this problem, or even better, found a solution? I did reduce the file size of images in the Pages file and am wondering if maybe Pages has reduced the resolution of the whole document. It looks like it is about 72dpi which is, of course, awful! Help, please!

Thanks, I ran that search and 120 or so posts later I'm still not sure. (I know, the answer is in #121...) No matter, I do have a way to retain resolution from large Pages files : Pages>Export as Best PDF>Open PDF in Preview>Save As Photoshop>Open in Photoshop>Save As PDF seems to keep resolution but shrink filesize by about 90% for me, so that's good. I think my mistake here was assuming that shrinking the Pages doc would only reduce image resolution, but I think it has reduced the resolution of the whole file including text, as you've said, which is the problem I'm having. Well, you live and learn. Back to the drawing board, unless someone else has a suggestion!

Unchecking Print Resolution - need clarification, need Jeff Schewe

Seeking clarification on using the print module in LR. Have read several threads in which Jeff Schewe (Jeff, are you there?)suggests that you use your file as a master file in LR and that if you uncheck the print resolution box, you can print multiple sizes of an image by merely changing the print size in LR, provided you uncheck the print resolution box.
Want to make sure that I've got this workflow right. You do your edits in LR and process your raw file. Then bring the file into CS3 for whatever other tweaks are needed. Add a layer and do your output sharpening on this layer, but don't go up to the Image, Image Size command. Do your sharpening without resizing or resampling.
My RAW files come into CS3 with a resolution of 240 pixels/inch. This is the native resolution?? After sharpening in CS3 (without resizing or resampling), bring the file back into LR. In the print module, uncheck print resolution (LR shows the resolution as being 240 ppi)and enter the height and width of the print size (not the paper size, but the print size) in the cell size. Go into page setup (Windows) which will take you into your print driver. On my Epson r2400 this is where I choose sheet vs roll, paper type, print quality, click ICM, then click off. Ok my way out of the Epson driver back to LR. On the white page layout in the center of the print module, LR will give me a new ppi reading. In my workflow, I typically print at 8x12 inches, so now LR is telling me that it is at 275 ppi. Pick profile and rendering intent in color management. As long as the read out for my print size in the white center section of lightroom reads between 180-480ppi, then at this point I am good to go and click print.
Have I got it? Am I missing something? Please, enlighten me.
Will LR provide a superior print to CS3 or is it six of one, half dozen of the other?

First off, it's poor form to address posts in a public forum to single individuals...this is a forum and ALL members should be encouraged to post...this is akin to asking for an answer to a question be sent directly by email.
The resolution of raw files is xxxxpixels by xxxxpixels. That's the only way to think of resolution in Lightroom. As a result, the image may be said to be 240, 300, 360 or 480 PPI depending on the size the image will print. A small print, held closer will need more PPI than a large print hung on a wall. So the resolution of a raw file will vary depending on the size of the final cropped & printed image. As long as the PPI of the image size is between 180-480 PPI you really have no reason for up or down sampling...
When I work on an image in Photoshop from Lightroom, I'll have an image print size in mind. I use softproofing for final tweaks to the image-often applied locally and set the PPI (Image Size without resample) to the size I want then use PhotoKit Sharpener for the resulting pixel density. Then hit save and print from Lightroom.
The -Edit file in Lightroom has the pixel density I speced in Photoshop and the softproofing tweaks as well. I then print form Lightroom-not so much because Lightroom is capable of producing BETTER prints...but because I find it quicker and easier to print with LR's print environment.
If I want to make a different sized print (or a print on different papaer requiring a different profile) I'll open the tiff image into Photoshop from Lightroom using the Edit Original...my original tiff file with all layers pops open, I'll make whatever changes I need and hit save again...so that one master tiff file becomes my print mater file with all the layers I may need to either use, or turn off if I don't need them. The same image, if printed 4x6 will have different pixel density than a 13x19" print, thus I'll have tow separat sets of output shaprening. But I don't need to resample the image, I resize without resampling checked to change the ratio and density.
And yes, all of this with Lightroom's print module set to no resampling and no sharpening...minor changes in the image cell size in LR don't require going back into Photoshop for resizing...

No Printer Resolution Options for hp LaserJet Enterprise 600 M601

Running under Mac OS 10.6.8, we've run into a problem printing separations to our new hp LaserJet Enterprise 600 m601 printer from Illustrator CS4, CS5 and CS6.
In the printer dialog box, once under the "Output" section, with the mode set to either "Separations" or "In-RIP Separations", there are no options listed in the "Printer Resolution" drop-down.
I've tried re-installing the driver, changing the resolution settings in the printer itself, using a generic PS driver, and contacting hp directly (their solution was to contact Adobe). I have yet to contact Adobe itself, but none of my other attempts netted a different result.
In the document ink listing, the Frequency and Angle listings are still editable, but needs to be done manually for every colour, and the dot shape options are non-existant.
We had previously been using a hp LaserJet 2300n, but we were running into insufficient memory issues on an increasingly frequently basis. The driver for the 2300n had several different sets of Printer Resolution settings, so once the new printer was set up, I *assumed* that it would have the same kind of options.
I have discovered that if I change my PPD from the proper driver (HP LaserJet 600 M601 M602 M603) to the old one (Hp LaserJet 2300) I am then able to select the resolution I want from the drop-down list, switch the PPD back to the proper one for the M601, and it seems to work (leaving the 2300 as the PPD file results in a warning and a failed print attempt).
I also tried printing something from a non-Adobe program using the M601, and there were two options available for printer quality (resolution?) settings.
Any thoughts?

Re instakll the printers driver first remove the printer from the printer list.

HP LaserJet 2600n poor print quality/streaking

I am the original owner of an HP LJ 2600n with a poor print quality/streaking issue. The poor print quality occurs with any and all paper that I use (currently Hammerhill 20# stock) and occurred with Windows XP and Windows 7. The print cartidges are all genuine HP and changing them does not make any difference. I have cleaned the front door roller with no improvement. My firmware version is 20070716. The black cartridge is at 33%; yellow 75%; cyan 91% and magenta 91%...
Any advice would be appreciated. An example of the output is attached below:

I have resolved my problem. I took a leap and purchased a new toner cartridge, and the new catridge works great. Installed it yesterday and the test page comes out clean, clear and with no double image. I'm happy.
Apparently the printer had not had a print item sent to it in over a year. I think that was actually hard on the toner cartridge.

How do I change the printer resolution?

How do I change the printer resolution on my OSX 10.6.2 laptop?
I have an ubuntu print server and it seems to only work at all using the gutenprint drivers. On my ubuntu client I had to change the print resolution from "auto" to 600x600 to make it work just fine.
The best I can do is make the Mac print pages squished down to 1/4 size. I don't see the same resolution option on the Mac.

I can't speak for the printer directly, but most functions to change resolution are in the dropdown menu at the bottom of the print dialog. It has a gray bar running through it separating the basic functions from the advanced settings.
If you don't see that, but do see a blue button with a black triangle pointing down, click on that. Then you'll be able to set the advanced settings.
Once you set up the printer the way you like, save it as a preset. If you want that as a default, see this [MacOSXHint|http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20100125135830153].

Printing resolution bugs

I am very happy to report that the big printing bug in 2.0 has been fixed (the release note talks about panoramic images which is silly - this bug pertained to all images, even vertically oriented ones). You no longer get a major reduction in resolution when the file gets rotated from its native orientation, which meant you had to print portrait oriented raw on a landscape paper and use rotation as RAW is natively always landscape to avoid a major loss of sharpness. This is no longer an issue and Lightroom always sends the resolution you ask it to.
There is however, a small bug left. When you uncheck "print resolution", Lightroom does not stop scaling the image and you will still get the resolution that is now shown in grey. For example an image that is 400 ppi natively at the printed size WILL get downscaled to 300 ppi (if that was your last setting) even if you uncheck the scaling option. This is just a minor annoyance as in most images, you will not see the difference, but still should be fixed I guess.

The books are printed at 300 dpi as that's the resolution of the pdf file that's created by iPhoto for uploading and printing. \

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

What Print Resolution for Epson R800?

I wonder what the value for "Print Resolution" in the Printer module should be to print with an Epson R800 on glossy or luster paper at the highest quality settings (Photo RPM).
I would rather not have LR do any re-sampling... but given it asks for a resolution, I am unsure what is the best value to provide.

LR is limited to 480 dpi, not printer ppi:
"This number of ink drops a printer can put on paper is called the printer resolution dpi. So if a printer has a resolution of 1200 dpi but requires 16 drops of ink to display a color, the actual resolution is much lower. Since ink drops are used in both directions (length and width: 16 drops made up of 4 rows of 4 drops), you could say that the effective resolution would be 1200 divided by 4 (or 300) dpi. Practically this isn't entirely true since modern inkjet printer can spray tiny ink drops that overlap each other. Roughly you can say that the higher the printer dpi, the higher the print quality, but it also depends on how the printer forms the dots on paper."

Maybe you have to be more explicit. What do you want to print? What Component? Only a image? A Swing component (JTree, JTable, JPanel, etc)?

L7780 poor print quality after not using for 6 months

Poor print quality after not using my printer for about 6 months. Ran thru the tools (clean printhead, aligh, etc . . .) didn't help. Replaced all chartridges, still no help.
I'm fairly tech savy, been in IT for 27 years starting with hardware support.
Question, can I manually clean the printheads or should I just replace. I would rather try to clean them manually after just shelling out > $ 170 on new chartridges.

Poor print quality through photoshop CS 6 using HP 7520

Hi Im having poor print quality (muddy) dense, I might not have the proper color management or printer profile loaded on the HP 7520. using Windows 7 (64) bit.

Well, I guess it is all about the paper.
I started using Premium Ink Jet paper which cleaned up the printing a great deal. Standard quality settings now produce just faint imperfections but higher quality settings eliminate them entirely.
One of those "you get what you pay for" issues I guess.

What print resolution do I want?

I see that when I print I am given the option of print resolution. before I got lightroom I used to print from photo shop elements, and this was not in the options list.
Just wonder how to choose resolution?

Personally I won't go above 720 and I don't recommend it. Higher resolutions require more time and memory to prepare the fle and I don't see any advantage. Most of the time I stay at 240 and resolution is checked. If I have something with lots of fine detaill I will use 720, otherwise I tend to stay at 240. Wth my 2200 Epson this works very nicely for me.
Please understand that this is how I work, therefore it may not fit you.
The way to find what works best for you is make prints and look at them with a loupe.

Printing resolutions, trees, resizing components & co

Hi.
I've a little problem which grows bigger and bigger every day: I've to print a tree. Sound's easy, hm? That's not all, I have to use a template and there's a place marked where I've to put that tree (can be a component) but I'm not allowed to change template and I'm not the one adding the other components, just reponsible for trees.
Ok, now I managed that tree is displayed over more pages without cutting any objects at end of page but now I face other troubles: The tree is too big at all. So I've to resize this.
I was first wandering, why tree was that big and it is because a page is always rendered with 72dpi by default. First think I thought was to change printing resolution by setting page attributes:

However it doesn't work at all. The components get resized but the nodes where irrecognizable, especially text looks cruel.

EPRON SP R 2880 - printing resolution

Since the last upgrade of OS X10.5.8 I'm anable to set the printer resolution higher than 720x720 DPI. The SP R2880 is capable to print up to 5760 DPI.
Someone has the same problem? Do you know how to solve it?

Standard OS 10.6 doesn't support our R2800's and when you visit the local Epson site (in my case the Netherlands) you get a message that our printers are currently not supported... However when you visit the dot com site there you'll be able to find the 6.57 version of their software which does run under 10.6, provided you have Rosetta installed. Using that setup allows me to choose multiple resolutions for printing my photos!

Print resolution with DNG converter 5.7 beta

I am using Lightroom 1.4.1, Vista 32bit sp2, Canon 350D and 550D cameras and Canon i9950 printer. In order to open Canon RAW files from the 550D I am converting to DNG with the latest Adobe DNG converter (5.7.0212 beta). I use ACR 4.1 compatibility in accordance with the guidance given on the DNG Converter preference page. I have today noticed some abnormal behaviour that the beta release page asks me to report here.
Converting 550D file to dng using the ACR 4.1 compatibility, opening the dng in Lightroom and printing the full (18M) frame at 6x4 inch, with the print options set to 480dpi and medium sharpening, I obtain a print which has a resolution of 100dpi or less.
Crop the image to quarter size and print as 1 above - print resolution normal (480).
Convert a 350D image (8M) and print as 1 above - print resolution normal
Print 550D RAW using Canon DPP - print resolution normal
Convert 550D file to dng using ACR 5.4 compatibility. Opens OK in LR1.4.1 (fortunately), print as 1 above and print resolution is normal.
The only apparent difference between converting at ACR 4.1 and 5.4 compatibility is the print resolution - the 5.4 version seems to open and be stable with LR 1.4.1. To use 5.4 compatibility is an obvious workaround - are there any pitfalls when using this version?

You can't...DNG Converter is a stand alone app and can't be used with Bridge...since you are working with Bridge CS4. if there is no built in support for your camera, you'll have to do a finder copy and then convert. Also note that you are not limited to using DNG Converter 5.7. You can use the most recent DNG Converter which is 6.2 (the 6.3 version is an RC and not yet released). But, that won't help Bridge CS4 either...
You can use the Canon software to do the import from camera or card...
