Poor quality dv video

I have read enough to know that importing dv into imovie 09 and exporting to iDVD gives poor quality when making a DVD. I have quite a few old VHS tapes to change to DVD's. What I would like to know is if there is a way to process the movie so you don't have the "single field processing"? What is the procedure for getting around iMovie 09?

I have read enough to know that importing dv into imovie 09 and exporting to iDVD gives poor quality
Easy to 'fix'.
Use iMovie 06 with iDVD 08/09
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08/09 is "The Best" combination for quality.
From PC World review:
"The way iMovie '09 handles video internally is mostly unchanged from the previous version (iMovie 08): interlaced DV and HDV footage use single-field processing to improve performance, which means iMovie (09) is throwing out every other horizontal line of information."
"Apple has deliberately made a tradeoff between performance and image quality for some footage."
iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.

  • Poor quality streaming videos

I've noticed that my imac can't handle or should I say doesn't have the same quality streaming playback as my PC. I thought mac's were meant to handle media, graphics, video's & such. I'm presently running with what came with my OS which is Quicktime 7 & I downloaded the newest version of media player but the picture quality on both are very poor with visible pixels & frequent stalling & pausing. Can anyone suggest a program out there or maybe I've got something setup wrong.

Quicktime 7 & I downloaded the newest version of media player but the picture quality on both are very poor with visible pixels & frequent stalling & pausing.
Poor quality video is usually the result of low resolution media files being streamed to you, If you play any of the movie trailers on the Quicktime site, for example, you can see the high quality of streaming video that is possible in Quicktime.
I cannot recall visiting any sites recently that have high quality feeds for Windows Media Player. Many of the WMP feeds I have seen look fine if you keep the player window on the small side, but rapidly disintigrate as you enlarge the window. I have to admit I have not looked for sites with WMP content, so what I have seen is just that which I have come across.

  • Very poor quality ichat video

I am new to ichat and I have very poor quality video links with my family. One in CA and the other in TN both are on macs. They are both very fragmented and broken up. Also there is a huge delay in the audio. Please help....I can't see my new nephew. Thanks

i am also having issues with my ichat video quality, and there is a delay on audio sometimes. i chat with my friend in philly; i am in brookyn, ny. sometimes the audio is in sync, and then sometimes we have a delay. but the video quality is so blurry on my end...i can barely see her. but her video of me is fine. my preview screen looks great, the connection doctor says everything is good.
i'm not very good with macs tho and computer jargon. i need someone to help me, but who can walk me thru this stuff like im in first grade.

  • Poor quality HD video playback when in full screen?

I've recently purchased a late 2013 iMac 21.5" mid-range model and finding the video playback quality poor when opening it up to full screen. Does anyone else have this issue?? I was expecting similar quality to my HD tv when using the iPlayer app, but i@m even finding it poor when watching the HBO trailer on the Apple website for Game of Thrones. I have also been into my local Stormfront and found the same issue on both their 21.5 and 27" models on the shop floor.
Am I being too picky? The quality when it is in the small window is amazing.

The quality when it is in the small window is amazing.
One thing that pops into my mind is: what is the resolution/size/quality of the video you are watching? If it was created in a smaller size, then forcing it into showing on a bigger screen will always impact the quality significantly. You cannot enlarge a picture or video without significant quality loss (fuzzy/pixelation).

  • Poor quality of video imported in iMovie 09

    Hi,
I'm importing my Mini-DV videos into iMovie 09 and the quality of the imported video is very poor compared to the same video played directly from my camera on my TV.
I now it's been a long-standing issue but I haven't seen any real way of solving this issue.
    Could someone help me there?
    Many thanks.

  • Poor quality of video in itunes

I recently downloaded episodes of "Lost", and have noticed that the image resolution at full screen is rather poor. Any ideas/suggestions?

iTunes videos are created at QVGA screen sizes, this is to facilitate the native resolution of the iPod. QVGA is short for Quarter VGA beacuse it is 1/4 of a 640x480 VGA screen. QVGA is therefore 320x240. A QVGA screen when stretched to your full screen size will most likely show some evidence of pixelation. A couple of fixes: 1) change your display resolution down to the smallest size (least number of pixels), this will make a smaller image take up more of the screen. You won't be gaining any resolution, and i can't guarantee that the pixelation will be tremendously better, but you won't be stretching the image so far on your screen. The other 2) don't stretch it out to be full screen. go with about 2/3 of your screen size or whatever is the best compromise between image size and degredation.

  • Poor quality of video chat

When I try to video chat with people on iChat (I have a Macbook), the quality of the video is terrible, even though my internet connection is usually strong and fast. I have even tried it with people on computers in the same room, and I have the same problem. Is it just a connection problem that I can't really do anything about, or do I have something set incorrectly?

this happens sometimes for me too, it may be the other person's connection, but usually i just quit the window and resend the invitation. The quality usually improves.

  • Poor quality image with doing videos with photos/images HELP!

    Hello,
I bought Adobe Premiere Element to make videos with pictures. When I do the video, the quality of my photos is good. When I save the video on my computer or I download it on youtube (example) the quality of my photos is extremely poor. Why? Does anyone can help me? Thank you!

What Project Preset did you choose at New Project? In the case of Video, composed of Still Images ONLY, you would set that to your desired delivery specs. Not so, if you are also using Video.  I tried several types of parameters. Some parameters give poor quality when I upload it to Youtube (for example) and others in the design of video and upload to YouTube. So which settings should I use for photos only ?
This sounds like you are talking about the Export/Share settings for output to YouTube.
What I was asking is what did you start off with, when you were at New Project?
If you are doing an SD Project, you will have either 720 x 480 (NTSC), or 720 x 576 (PAL) pixels in the Project's Frame Size. If that is what you want, then I would Scale your camera original Stills to 640 x 480 (for NTSC), as you have Square Pixels, and the Project will have either 0.9 for NTSC Standard, or 1.21 for NTSC Widescreen).
PrE can Scale the Still Images, but the Scaling algorithms in Photoshop are much better, and offer more control.
Now, if you wish to do an HD Project, just choose that as your Preset, and then use the Images in about their original size. Note, there will be some black borders, as the screen-caps most likely have a different Aspect Ratio, than a Video Project, which for HD will be 16:9. Especially with screen-caps, that are pretty low resolution to begin with, I would NOT do any Scaling, and would live with the letterboxing, or pillar boxing, rather than Scale and effectively Crop.
Also, when Scaling in Photoshop, I do not Save_As JPEG, as it introduces compression, but only as either PSD (Photoshop's native format), or PNG.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Videos .avi with poor quality on iDVD.

I am new user on Mac. I work with soccer match analysis and I have to use the softaware on windows plataform.
I creat videos (.avi) with good quality if I watch on Windows Media Player or TV. When I watch on my Mac, they have a real poor quality (defocused and trembled).
I used to creat my videos on this software (windows) and I burn de DVD on iDVD.
Do I have to convert my .avi videos to any other extension file?
When I converted my .avi files to .ogm files the quality was better, but I couldnt use these files on iDVD.
Are there anything that I could try to get better quality on my video files?

    Hi
I would convert the .avi to streamingDV and use this in iDVD.
    .avi
You can use MPEG-Streamclip to convert the AVI files so that QuickTime can play them
    and to streamingDV for iMovie.

  • Poor quality on music videos

Every music video I have have poor quality. Whether if it's a new video or old, it is very pixely and not clear at all. When there is fast movement, it gets even worse, especialy around faces. Movies are okay and HD movies are very good. I have a 1080 tv. I have it set to 1080 and have also tried to change it to 720 but they are all the same. It's only videos so I would think my TV is set up correctly. Anyone have really clear videos?

I agree it would be very nice to have at least standard definition music videos. I think the problem is that music videos on iTunes are encoded for the lowest capable player (5th gen iPod) - and they look fine on them - but even on my iPhone some of them look awful (all of Madonna's recent videos for example have very low bitrates causing artifacts while during the whole video).

  • Why poor quality AIC & Apple ProRes HQ video when compared to original video files!

First, I'm a long time PC user who has recently switched to Mac's and I'm rather picky about the quality of my videos.
Problem: I have HD video from a Canon HF S10 camcorder and Canon EOS 7D that looks fantastic on a PC... but looks very so-so once imported into a iMovie or FCE or FCP. I've tried all three programs using AIC and yes I've even tried Apple Pro Res HQ (FCP 7.0 log & transfer) and still end up with very poor quality mov files when compared to the originals. Part of the problem (or benefit of a PC) is that the PC actually plays the original RAW MTS/M2TS/MOV files without any trouble and and they look unbelievable. Where as my Mac has to import/convert the file to AIC or Apple Pro Res HQ... so no matter what codec I use, my Mac produces video that is not even close to what I get out of my PC.
My original RAW files are all 1920x1080 60i and are MTS files from the HF S10 and Mov files from the 7D. Even the original RAW Mov files produced from the 7D don't look as good on my Mac as they do on my PC. I even took a SD card with the original files down to the local Apple store to see how they look on a Macbook Pro and they still don't look like the originals on my PC. Also, all my comparisons are being done side by side on two 24" Apple cinema displays at full size (1920x1080) that are calibrated. What am I doing wrong and why the loss in quality? Any ideas as to why the quality is just so-so when compared to the originals would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The thing that is wrong is that you are judging the quality of VIDEO on COMPUTER monitors. Properly calibrated or no...this is not how you do it. Calibration for computer monitors sets them right for PHOTOSHOP and color, not VIDEO and proper monitoring. Only getting a signal to a broadcast VIDEO monitor, or HDTV, will show you what you really have. And for that you need an HD input/output device or capture card...and the HDTV or HD monitor.
Computer monitors are never the place to judge video quality. Resolution is typically lowered to allow for full frame playback. Even if paused.

  • Poor Audio and Video Quality

Using IDVD to burn iMovie containing pictures and music and am getting very poor quality audio and video. The video is very low resolution, lacking clarity and definition, and the audio comes out really flat with over-saturated vocals that is unpleasant to listen to.
The content was made from iMovie 11, importing photos from iPhoto and iTunes music.
    I exported the movie via Share->Export Movie-> HD 1080P
In iDVD 7.1.2 I imported the movie (actually several) into a slideshow menu item.
I used the iDVD encoding preferences set at 'Best Performance' and 'Professional Quality' with no difference between the two
Then to ensure it wasn't the DVD disk causing the problem, I used the 'Save as Disc Image', and validated the file image saved to disk had the same quality issues as the burned DVD.
Then to eliminate the iMovie as the problem, ran a test and used an iPhoto slideshow in place of the iMovie, and it also has the same low quality issues.
I have observed that using the iDVD viewing capabilities, the A/V quality is fine. Its after the burn to disk the problem occurs.
At this point I'm not sure what to try. I'm viewing the DVD on my 50" widescreen TV using Sony DVD player.
A year or so back I did similar steps and the DVD came out fine... the sound quality was excellent and the video quality while not outstanding, was reasonable.
Any ideas -- I'm really stumped.

    Hi
In iMovie'11 - I do (not use Share to iDVD)
    • Share to Media Browser - AND AS Large - NOT HD ! (result will not be better but rather WORSE)
    • In iDVD I import from Media button and Movie tab.

  • Flash CS4 Video Poorer Quality Than Flash 8

I've upgraded to Flash CS4 from Flash 8 Pro and find the quality of the FLV video is noticeably poorer now for the same Adobe Media Encoder settings. In addition, the video encoded using CS4 won't play on my web server. If I export from Premier Pro to AVI and then convert to Flash using my older Flash 8 the quality is good and it plays fine on my website.
There is something strange about the FLV and SWF files created by CS4. The system that is running Flash 8 (WinXP 32bit) cannot play the CS4 created FLV files from the desktop even though they are supposed to be Flash 8 or later compatible. The system that has CS4 installed (Vista 64bit) can play both version of FLV.
It appears that the FLV created by AME is not really Flash 8 compatible. Perhaps this is connected in some way to the poorer quality I'm getting
Any help appreciated. I do need to solve this before my XP/Flash 8 system goes away.
    Peter Cassidy

It has always been this way, even in the Macromedia days. Older versions of Flash cannot open (or play, as you like it) content made in the newer versions. The .fla files are totally different. I suppose this goes too for the video encoded by different versions of Flash.
I wouldn't advise you to get rid of your old system. You may need it ....

  • Poor quality when copying video on to disc

I have transferred a copy of my video to Adobe Premier from Magix Edit Pro as I was having trouble copying it in Magix. I successfully copied the video to disc but when I played it on my top of the line dvd player and tv the quality was poor. I need to make several more copies but it's not worth it if I can't improve the quality.  The definition is poor and the video has flickering throughout when played on my tv.  How can I improve the quality of the video? Thanks.  I use Windows 7 and Adobe Premier 11.
