Poor quality on slow motion!!! (pixelated)

I would be soooooo grateful if someone could help me here!
Okay, Ive been using final cut express for the past probably 5 months and had no problem but the other day when i went to edit a new video I noticed when i exported it any clips that had their speed altered or any fades were showing up extremely pixelated. When i view it back in final cut its fine. just when i export is when the few clips show up this way. The reason its so frustrating is because im editing and using all the same settings that i always have! I even tried editing old clips i knew worked and i had the same problem! I have no idea why this is happening, I've tried every type of export setting and still the same result!
PLEASEEE Help!

I dont completely understand how to find the clip properties, i have a feeling we may be using different versions of final cut? bc I didnt see an "items properties" under the sequence tab but the item properties for the sequence says (and im not sure if this is the information your looking for but)
Vid rate- 29.97 fps
Size- 960 x 540
Compressor- Apple intermediate cod
data rate- 3.4 mb/sec
Pixel aspect- square
The rest are blank or say none
As far as export goes i've originally did export using quicktime conversion and selected the sizes
1280x720 (which is what i normally do)
Compressor native
960 x 540
and a bunch of other options in the menu (leaving everything else as is)
I think tried export quicktime movie and i checked both make movie self containing and unchecking it. all leading to the same result

  • Poor clip quality after applying slow motion or stabilization

I am making a movie.  Every clip that I change to slow motion, or stabilize (or add both to), becomes blurry.  I finalized it & put it on dvd to see if it still blurry on the tv, and it is.  Anyone know how to fix these clips so I can get the original clip quality with the slow motion/stablilization?
    Thank you in advance

I am using PPro CC 7.2.1 on Mac OS X 10.8.5.  I'm working in software only renderer.  Just by applying a Three-Way Color Corrector or a Video Limiter (just applied, without any modifications... didn't test other filters), the photo quality is degraded.  The result is the same after exporting or rendering the sequence.  Tested in DVCPRO-HD and ProRes interlaced sequences, same result.
Here is a photo without any filter applied to it (on the left) and with a video limiter (right) :
On another editing station with CUDA enabled, the problem isn't there.  But not all our station are CUDA enabled, so I wish I could fix the problem.

  • Poor quality slow motion

i have a montage of a wedding set to three minutes of music, all the slow motion video is choppy, when someone walks across the screen they appear to be stuttering. when viewed on the timeline the motion is smooth and just how i need it to be but when exported to apple intermidiate codec and burned via toast 9 the image is jittery, stuttering when we view it on our TV.
Desperate for answers as the finished production should be inthe hands of the bride & groom next week?

If this is a standard DVD, I think you'd be better off exporting a QuickTime movie from FCE and burning with iDVD. If you'll create the DVD on the same computer, leave the "self-contained" check box blank for a much smaller file and quicker process.

    Hi All
Just started using Premiere Pro CS5.  (Used CS3 before with SD video). Getting poor quality playback on program monitor when playing timeline footage.
My new camera is a Panasonic AG-HMC81E
Record Format is AVCHD HA mode 1080/50i 17 mbps (vbr)
Recording media is SDHC Card 16GB Class 10
I copied the files from the card to my hard disk.  Files are mpeg (.MTS files)

    Wrong settings?
    Missing codec?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi All
Clip on timeline has yellow line above it.  After rendering it has green line above it and the quality is much improved.
Imported clip and tried MODIFY/INTERPRET FOOTAGE.
This says that my clips are SQUARE PIXELS.  I thought i should be using the 1080i anamorphic setting
as im shooting in 16/9 widescreen.
    File Properties says
    File Path: D:\AVCHD\BDMV\STREAM\00000.MTS
    Type: MPEG Movie
    File Size: 23.9 MB

Sorry to keep asking, and not trying to sound silly, but am i using the correct project settings for this file type.
    I'm currently using: -
Editing Mode - AVCHD 1080i Square Pixel
    Timebase - 25 frames
    Frame size - 1920 X 1080 Widescreen 16 x 9
Pixel aspect ratio - Square pixels (1.0)
    Fields - Upper field first

    Preview - I-Frame only MPEG
    Codec - MPEG I-Frame
    Width - 1920
    Hight - 1080
Thanks for all your help so far.
Perhaps poor quality is down to slow hardware as looks much better after rendering.
As long as i know i am using the correct settings i can update any hardware as required.

  • FCPX choppy slow motion, picture quality and effects

is it just me or does final cut pro x have really bad quality picture. two main things i have noticed in using this software is the slow motion is really choppy even after rendering out with optical flow and there is a lot of vibration in the picture. lines are jumpy and when adding effects it gets much worse, also there are black lines at top and bottom of screen.
i was using edius prior to getting a mac and it was as smooth as butter, slow mo and all. im kinda bummed about the whole final cut thing.  please help.
    thanks.
i dont think it has anything to do with my mac. im running a new imac 3.4ghz i7 quadcore 16gb ram and 2gb grafix card.

yes, those are the properties i use.
so there is somthing wrong with the picture?
    not just me?
is there anyway to import it at 60i?
for some reason it doesnt give me that option..

  • Export via Quick Time ends up being pixelated and poor quality

I shoot my student film on an Arri S camera with 16mm color stock. I got my film back to me from the school on a DV tape and imported it into FCP HD on my camcorder. When I went to export it onto a DVD for my actors, the film looks horrible! The blacks are really pixelated and the colors aren't as crisp as they were on film. I was told that it should look the same because we made the movie on better equipment and FCP won't lessen that, but at the same time FCP can't make poor quality work any better. Can someone tell me how to export my film without losing the 16mm quality. I don't want it to look digital, I spent a lot to get the real film stock. Thanks!

1- The film is 6 minutes long
2- I don't know where to find out about the bit rates
3- The audio is simple, just 48 khz stereo.
When using DV format, what's the difference in DV, DVPRO, etc.?
The movie was filmed 24 fps, but then put onto a dv tape for me, so I assume they transferred it at 29.97 fps. Should I now use NTSC or stick to PAL? Basically, anymore compression makes the film look really bad and unusable for festivals, which ultimately was the whole purpose of my blood, sweat, and tears behind this film.
Thanks for all your help and any more questions you need answered to solve this problem I'd be more than happy to answer.

  • Poor quality of motion background menu

    Hello to all.
For the first time I have made a motion menu with Encore CS5.1
The video background of the menu is of poor quality. It seems that the frame rate is lower than normal.
    I have made an experiment:
the menu shows a button which gives access to a video sequence which is the same as the background of the menu. The sources are strictly the same.
The result is that the backgroud menu is of poor quality compared to the content linked by the menu although the assets are the same.
The settings I have used are in the images below.
You will see the video at : http://jp-tech.pagesperso-orange.fr/download/DVD.zip
I have carried out different settings. The results are the same.
    Any help appreciated, thank you.

    Hi Stan Jones,
Thank you so much for the reply.
I am not sure I have well understood your advice. I think you told me that there is not enough bitrate for the audio.
Anyway I have changed the settings as the following and the issue is the same. Best regards. Jean-Paul

  • Motion file poor quality in DVD Studio Pro

I'm using a Motion file for my DVD menu. I have double checked to ensure that all of the dimensions are correct, however the quality of the motion file is incredibly poor in DVD studio pro. Is there something that I am missing?

Don't trust the viewer in DVDSP. It's by no means accurate. Plus, since you're adding a Motion project to the DVDSP project, the Motion file needs to be converted to MPEG2 so that it'll play on a DVD. You could be either seeing a preview of a file that's not been converted yet, or else the encoding settings in DVDSP could be set too low.
My recommendation would be to burn a quick DVD and view in on a TV for quality.

  • Slow Motion on EX-1

I'm shooting a short comedy with the Sony EX-1, likely for web/DVD. I'd probably shoot the whole thing in 1080p24 BUT I need a few shots in slow-motion by "overcranking" to 60fps - and that is only possible in 720p24.
So, any suggestions as to whether I should (a) do normal shots in 1080p24, and slow-motion shots in 720p24, then mix in FCP; or (b) do everything in 720p24, thus avoiding any mixed format issues?

I guess the reason is to capture at the best quality possible in case I want to move to the big screen or use the higher res version one day. Also, it's nice to have the extra pixels in case I want to do some scaling/zooming during the edit.
You're right, of course, that I'd be up-rezzing the 720p only to compress it again for web/DVD. I'm not sure how much that will muddy it up, but maybe I'll see. (I have another couple days to decide which way to go). That said, I may end up down-rezzing the 1080p, in which case I'll wonder whether it would have been smarter to capture in 720p in the first instance. (Hmm, would there be a difference between "captured as 1080p and down-rezzed to 720p in FCP" footage versus "captured as 720p in the first instance" footage? I'll have to search the boards for that one.)
Thanks again for your insight and advice!

  • Slow motion 50% export H.264 MOV (at half frame rate)

    Hi,
I'm using a QuickTime MOV file (H.264, 1080p/59.94fps, 15 seconds) and have set slow motion to 50% (= 30 seconds).
Can anyone confirm that when I export this clip to 29.97fps I won't lose frames?
I have Compressor and think I found nearly all required settings except:
    - Key frames - shall I use automatic or 24 or what? (How can I find out what the original key frame value was?)
    - Frame reordering - shall I uncheck this option? (What does it mean? It's not in the manual.)
    Many thanks!

If you want to make absolutely sure you won't lose frames, you should manually set a project to 29.97fps, import your 60/59.94fps and conform the video (Retime menu > Conform Speed [the retime menu is the 2nd one from the left over the effects browser area/under the inspector area]). FCPX will automatically frame for frame adjust the video to fit to the slower frame rate.
Key frames (video compression, not animation):  a key frame is a complete image -- 100% pixels in use. Every frame between the key frames are only the parts of the image that change from the last frame (like Cel animation). Setting Automatic allows the software to make the best choices of when and where to create a complete frame. Otherwise, you can experiment with different values (up to All, which is pretty much no compression) to see what kinds of results you get and the overall quality (use very short pieces, like 5 -10 seconds.)  High motion areas in video are always going to be the most challenging with respect to compression (particularly bitrate), so... it's worth figuring out what settings you like that will give the best results (and 5-10second clips don't take that long to render.) I generally use Automatic and adjust the bitrates to give the best overall results (which occasionally requires testing segments.)
Frame reordering:  allows applications to "decompress" video frames in a different order than they are played, thereby allowing those apps that understand it a way to work faster. Larry Jordan suggests that this setting always be set for H.264 video (although I don't if I'm uploading to YouTube -- I try not to give YouTube any excuses for recompressing my video, so I try to have it already optimized before uploading... so far, it seems to be working.)

  • Slow motion and resolution

Will using slo mo (fcp HD) change image resolution?

I am in charge of creating some segue sequences that are experimental in nature with layers, loops, and slow motion. The director posed the question that it might be a too severely "degraded" image quality compared to the other "talking heads". I just want to know what I'm dealing with when it comes to pushing final cut's filters, traveling mattes, etc to an extreme. < </div>
    We call those Cool Assignments.
It's not easily answered. The absolute image quality is predictable by knowing how many filters or render steps are in your process. But the apparent image quality may be far better, as noted above. "Pushing" FCP's effects system is easy because it's so limited until you go out to third party tools and then you must have a firm grounding in codecs and compression.
You are going to distract form the heads not by offering up a degraded image as far as pixel quality is concerned. "Degraded" in your case, seems to refer to the deconstruction of the image by deliberate manipulation.
Here's another question, if I create a complicated sequence with layers, mattes, slo mo, etc. then export to a quicktime file to compress and then import it into the main timeline, will this ensure a higher quality overall? < </div>
As Brian and Zap are trying to add, "compress" isn't what you want to do. That's whey many of us move to Motion or After Effects for this stuff and then render to a lossless codec.

  • Export slow motion from my 5s.

Hi there. I would know how to export slow-motion videos from my phone 5s to my computer without losing any quality.

    I wouldn't change applications against a deadline.
Slow motion is not an easy effect to do in post unless you shot more frames per second than you needed for standard speed. Making 30 frames a second into 60 frames requires each frame to be printed twice. What were your expectations or what have your tried before?
Especially with HDV, which starts out so heavily compressed, by the time it gets slomo'd and transcoded back to MPEG2 again, yeah, I imagine it's gonna look pretty bad. You can obtain some expensive software to do the optical flow pixel interpretation without buying FCS2 but that's up to your client's needs for smooth slow motion. Rendering optical flow, we've heard, takes for freakin' ever, even on the best machines.
Some HDV users will chime in over the next few hours or days with more helpful advice.

  • Compressed .mov to mpeg4 comes out in Slow Motion!

Using Compressor to bring down an 11GB Quicktime file to a couple of GB.  And it comes out in Slow motion!
The Quicktime A/V attributes are: Video encoded 1920x1080, PAL, 25fps, Pixel square, Field Dominance: Progressive, Audio:  48kHz/16bit
These are the Settings I used:
    Video:  Video enabled is selected
Allow job segmenting is selected.  Should it ?
    Frame Rate:  25fps
    Key Frame interval:  15  .  I tried 25 ?
    Bit rate:  medium VBR
    Audio:  Audio enabled is selected
Channels:  I had to choose Mono, because with Stereo 48000kHz was greyed out
    Sample rate:  48000kHz, quality High,
Bit Rate: 64kbps.  If I change the bit rate to 16, the Sample rate becomes 22000!
    Streaming:  I deselected Streaming.
What did I do wrong?  Is there an incompatibility somewhere between Quicktime and MPEG4?  How can it be remedied?  I would be most grateful for any suggestion.  Happy New Year!

Hello Russ, these are the 3 Inspector screenshots you requested:
    1)  Inspector for the Quicktime file to be compressed:
    2)  Inspector Summary 1
    3)  Inspector Summary 2
    4)  Inspector Encoder 1
    5)  Inspector Encoder 2
That's how I ended up with slow motion in the converted mp4 file.  What do you make of it?
Many thanks in advance for any light you could throw on this.

  • SAP B1 Patch 42 GUI, Vista SLOW MOTION

    Hi,
I just don't know if I'm alone with this.
I didn't find any thread about it.
I've successfuly installed SAP B1 2005A SP001, Patch 42 on Windows Vista Home Premium.  Everything works find
    Except
When windows pop, its slow like hell.  You know this animation when you open let say Sales Invoice window.
Well in Vista, it takes at least 10 seconds like if everything was in slow motion.  But when the window is there, everything still works as normal !
Any idea ? Any patch ? Anything ?
    Thank you

    Hi,
Nice link but I'm not on version 10 but 42 and there's no error and no problem.  Just the GUI is slow.
I don't think Vista is to blame but rather the poor SAP GUI which really need a fix since a LONG LONG time
that would also probably fix the problem of .NET WinForms not sitting on top when called from SAP
I'm more looking if someone knows something about it, a patch for the GUI or even a registry key that would disable the SAP window animation.
