Poor quality sound on burned DVD - Any help?

Hello,
I am experiencing the following problem: I export videos from Premiere Pro as m2v and wav, repectively. I import them in Encore and let Encore transcode the wav file into AC3. In the preview on the computer, the sound seems OK. When I play the DVD on a set-top player, the sound quality is very poor.
I tried to use PCM encoding in Encore and the result was the same. Any solution? Do I have to look for another AC3 encoder? From what I gathered searching this forum, the encoder in Encore should work fine.

Thank you Stan and Bill for taking time to reply.
I did some tests and here's what I found:
When I play the burned DVD in my computer (using Power DVD) the sound is acceptable. The problem might be that the set-top DVD player/recorder  (Panasonic), or the sound system in my TV set, or a combination of both, are too sensitive to the quality of the sound track. There are no sound problems with the system however when playing commercial DVD or a DVD recorded with the Panasonic recorder. I re-edited the movie in Premiere and I exported audio as AC3 with the SurCode encoder, using all the free trials (the DVD had 3 timelines). I burned a DVD with this sound file and the quality was significantly improved when played on the same system. Conclusion: It seems the Encore AC3 encoder is not of the same quality as the SurCode. Are you of the same opinion?
Thanks again,
Harry.

  • Poor quality video when burning a DVD

    Hi All,
I have recently purchased & installed Premiere Elements 11 on my Windows 7 64bit Dell laptop. I found the tutorials very helpful and was able to successfully create my first project - importing a 46 minute AVCHD file4GB m2.ts shot on my Panasonic HC-V100 in Record Mode HG1920: 1920x1080 25f/s Audio 48kHz. When creating the project I selected: New Project>Change Settings>PAL>AVCHD>Full HD 1080i 25 andTicked ‘Force Selected Project Setting on this Project’ (I'm in the UK hence selecting PAL)
I added titles then created a menu and scenes using a still photo 2mb jpg 3456x2304 300dpi for the menu background. So far so good - really pleased with the results on screen. Next I selected Publish>Disc > selected AVCHD Add Name>Choose 1920x1080i>Burn to Folder. I then burned the BDMV Folder to DVD using the inbuilt DVD burner in my laptop.
This successfully produced a DVD with menus and titles which will play on my Blu-ray player. The quality of the video is excellent and I am delighted with the result however here is the first of the problems I'm hoping someone can help with: The background image on the menu is slightly blurred as are the menu/scene titles.
Next I wanted to produce a DVD for people who don't have a Blu-ray player & therefore need to play it on a normal DVD player. This is the second problem (and one I have seen mentioned elsewhere on the community). I published the project in a similar manner to the one above but with the following differences:
Burn to DVD Folder: Select 4.7>Type name>Browse to location. I now burn the VIDEO_TS folder to DVD, again using the the inbuilt DVD burner in my laptop however this time the result is very poor. The menu doesn't work and the quality of the video is unacceptable. Of course I understand that the result will be considerably lower quality than with the AVCHD version however this is not watchable.
(BTW, prior to purchasing Premiere Elements 11 I had been playing the video from my camera into a Sony RDR-HXD910 hard disc recorder then burning DVDs from that device using SP mode. This produced DVDs with perfectly acceptable quality so I must admit that I was hoping for similar results from Premiere Elements.)
I have read on the community that DVDStyler is a preferred method of burning DVDs however afer downloading it I failed to find a way of using it for simply burning my existing VIDEO_TS folder.
This is as far as I have got and now would really appreciate some help to point me in the right direction to be able to burn my project onto ordinary DVDs. I have tried to put as much information on the post as possible but I am new to video editing so have probably missed or not described something!
    Thanks in advance
    Simon

    ATR,
Thank you for helping me out.
    To answer your questions:
--Do you really need NTSC DVD-VIDEO standard 4:3 on DVD disc or is NTSC DVD-VIDEO widescreen 16:9 on DVD acceptable?
I was told that product specs require 4:3 aspect ratio for DVD.  (Unfortunately footage was all shot in 16:9 before I found out about the 4:3 finished requirement.)  I want to generate the highest IQ possible in this format.
    --Is your 1920 x 1080p 30 or 25 or something else?
All video was shot at 1920 x 1080p 60fps.  AVCHD.
Video Source Properties as obtained from the Timeline:
    Type: MPEG Movie
    Image Size: 1920x1080
    Frame Rate: 59.94
Source Audio Format: 48000Hz – compressed - Stero
Project Audio Format: 48000Hz – 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0
--What exactly is set as the Premiere Elements project preset for the project that has this 1920 x 1080p footage on its Timeline?
    PROJECT SETTINGS
Editing Mode: AVCHD 1080p square pixel
    Timebase: 59.94 fps
    Frame Size: 1920x1080
    Pixel Aspec Ratio: Square (1.0)
    Fields: None (progressive scan)
    Display Fomat: 60fps Drop-Frame Timecode
Title Safe Area: 20% horizontal, 20% vertical
Action Safe Area: 10% horizontal, 10% vertical
    Audio Sample Rate: 48000Hz
    Display Format: Audio Sample
--When the project preset was set, did you use NTSC or PAL section in the new project dialog?
I didn't make any choices.  I didn't use the new project dialog.  I imported media and started working.  When I saved, I made no choices.  Since I'm in the US and bought this from Amazon, I assumed it was NTSC, and that appears to be the case.
    --Is your program version 12?
    Yes.
Motivated by a different thread regarding titles and 4:3, I did create a test "movie" (not DVD) at 4:3 and all the titles fit within the image area.  (I even made a point of inserting a couple of titles that ran outside the "safe" area in the PRE Titler; these also all fit on the image although they came closer to the edge.  Not crowded, but perhaps not as aesthetically pleasing as those that were created within the limits.

  • Dvd player 3.2 unable to play burned dvd-  Any suggestions?

    Hello all,
I'm trying to play a burned dvd movie on my dvd player 3.2, but the dvd player doesn't automatically start playing it. My ibook, 10.2.8, doesn't seem to be able to read it. However, I tried the dvd on a new Mac and it works.
Any suggestions on what to do, besides buying a new Mac? Thanks!

I can't find the "post new topic" so I'm choosing
"reply" and hoping someone can help.
The new topic button is at the root level of each forum (like iDVD 5 or iDVD 6) towards the upper left corner. You won't see it when you are looking at someone else's messages.
I have an iMac, 10.2.8, with a DVD Player 3.2 that
has been working fine for several years.
The last few weeks when I put in a commercially made
DVD, it won't play. It doesn't automatically show up
on the desktop, and when I manually open the DVD
Player, it doesn't read the disk although the program
opens without problem. This isn't happening to all
    commercial DVDs, but most.
This isn't happening to all commercial DVDs - Doesn't sound like a problem with Apple's DVD Player application - you may have a dirty lens in your DVD drive.

  • No Sound in Burned DVD

    Hi,
I burn a DVD, which looks fine, but there is no sound in the movie. There Was sound in the movie in the iDVD file!
I am in a huge time crunch and despite looking through all sorts of documentation and in every nook and cranny of iDVD, I cannot figure out what to do to fix this.
A couple of weird behaviors that might be involved: This DVD project is 168 minutes long, so I am burning it to a dual-layer disk. When I go to burn, the message comes up that it would fit on a single-layer disk (which it would not!). It offers me the choice to "eject" or "proceed". If I click "eject", it doesn't eject the blank dvd, it just acts as if nothing happened and goes back to the iDVD project. If I click "proceed", six hours later I'm presented with a burned DVD with no sound.
    Help?

    Yes, I'm using 5.01.
(I downloaded 6.04 but apparently can't install it without an intermediate update?)

  • Missing some sound in burned DVD

When I play my burned DVD the music sound track is there but when the music is ducked for the vocals, the vocals are not there.

I have been trying to make a dvd with a sound track. I checked the sound and saved as mp3 format placed sound in sound box, tested it with slide sow. All is well, then I burn it, and when I play the burned disk I find there is audio drop out each time i remaster it. Is the conversion from mp3 to mp4 during the burning process failing causing the drop out?

  • Glitches/dropout on burned DVD.  HELP!!

    Hello all,
Great forum. Really hope someone can help.
My problem is that I have burned using DVDSP3 onto verbatim DVD-R using a superdrive.
On the finished product there are several glitches that look like dropout of some sort ie. blockey distortion. It only seems to effect the video and not audio. It also seems to happen near the end of the disk. I have buned several copies and each one has the same problem but at different points. This makes me think that it's the actuall type of DVD that I'm using as my output media. If so can anyone reccomend a type of DVD. I dont get this problem with simulator.
It's a live music concert so I haven't compressed the audio.
    It's a big file - 4.3gb mpg2, 107mins approx.
Would this have anything to do with it.
Another quickie, is how much does AC-3 compression affect the audio in terms of file size and quality. What AC-3 setting should I use for optimum size/quality.
It's already late for release and I'm starting to loose my mind. Help!

Where do I reduce the data rate and what settings ahould I use for this?
I did mean to keep the vision as is, and just replace the sound with an .ac3, which would lower the overall data rate by about 1Mbps. I'd assumed you were about to try this! See lots of previous posts - search for 'bit rate too high' et c. Hopefully, this should mostly sort out your problem.
..been advised that it could be the burn speed set too high causing ..
Have a look at the thread burn speed
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=514623
...does the disk quality affect a final product?
Yes it does. Find a brand partly by trial & error for your burner; but do use a named branded product. Verbatim & Ritek are good starting points.

  • How to get good picture quality on a burned DVD slideshow using IDVD?

After producing a slideshow on IDVD from either jpg or psd photos, it looked great when I played the project. Picture quality was excellent. When I burned a DVD to share the slideshow with a friend and when I played this on the same computer, it had lost resolution and looks awful. I am using best quality but this made no difference. On a hdtv using a standard player, the quality is mediocre. Is there any way to get a decent picture quality. I have also burned a DVD and CD from the IPhoto album, and the quality is better. IPhoto will not burn a slideshow or at least I do not know how to. Can you produce decent quality DVD using IDVD or is there a better application to produce decent DVD of photo slideshows?

....or is there a better application to produce decent DVD of photo slideshows?
Yes. It's called DVDSP (apple's top of the line DVD Authoring application). It has a much longer learning curve than iDvd and is more $$$ but it does work well. The Help Menu alone is over 640 pages long. However, is this app significantly better than iDvd solely in terms of visual quality?.... No.
But it does offer many more tools to address visual artifacts on the finished DVD, more audio control, much better control of durations per slide, audio, buttons that work as expected, among other things. (for additional examples of this see chapter 12 of the DVDSP Help Menu / starting on p. 373).
Short of DVDSP, and much less money, you can also try these 2 third party apps which come highly recommended on this iDvd Forum:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
    http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/overview/
At the moment most macs do not yet support burning to Blueray (which does offer much better results). Once this technology is more commonplace, then I believe we will see a significant improvement in what you are trying to do above.
Hope this is helpful but if not just come on back.

  • Poor Quality when Exported for DVD

    Hi,
I am creating a dvd of some animations, and the animations are videos of what were originally all vector shapes and text. The videos were originally made with After Effects, at 720x480, NTSC preset. I can export from after effects at full-scale with with no problems, but once the comp tries to go into NTSC mode (where it squishes it to 640x480) the whole thing becomes ruined. All text becomes illegible and many vector objects get jagged edges.
I have tried exporting from after effects as well as bringing it into final cut pro and using compressor at 2-pass (Best Quality 90 min DVD preset), and no matter what I do the resulting video is always horribly deformed... Any idea what I need to do differently?
    thank you.

    thank you for your help.
I am viewing this on a computer display. I've been switching between a powerbook and a g5 with cinema display.
In AE I typically use apple animation codec, but I have also been trying it as an uncompressed avi and and uncompressed quicktime. By bringing the file directly from AE to compressor and changing from vbr 2-pass to One Pass CBR it has greatly improved the quality, still it does have some pixelation that I can't get rid of, even at the full 9mbps bitrate.
My understanding was that I wasn't bringing it into square pixels that I was using the DVCPRO/NTSC preset which formats it to a 4:3 ratio (which is what I think Final Cut also is doing), either way, by not doing that in After Effects, and by changing to CBR it is definately an improvement.
One more thing I should probably mention is that the videos are actually programs I have written and so they are being captured using a screen-capture to video utility called iShowU. The program seems to be good, and I am using an NTSC preset.
Any ideas as to what I can do to get these to as good of quality as their apple animation quicktimes?
the dvds I am assembling are only about 45 minutes.

  • Best Quality too big for DVD. need help

    Hi,
I just completed a movie using iMovie. I compressed the movie as a Quicktime file at best quality and it is 6gb. I understand that this is too big for the 4.7gb dvd-r's i have.
I wanted to know the best way to get my movie to fit while still mainting the best possible quality. This project is very important and i need it to be able to play on a home dvd player tomorrow.
    I'm using iDVD.
Can somebody please help me out.
    Thank you so much

    Hi Karl,
first of all: on this forum, my guess is, you are the one with the deepest insight in iMovie (one word: corrupted projects... oops, that was two).
    BUT...
My job for more then 20 years is communication, advertisement as an example. make the message in less then 8 words...
Apples says: 60/120 minutes of an iM project fit on a dvd-r.Full stop.
that is from my p.o.v crystal-clear..HOW is this done? easy: make project, click "iDVD" - BOOM! done... to quote the CEO of a small computer company...
people buy cars without ANY idea, what ABS, EPS, etc is, besides HOW it works. they use it. full stop. anyone any idea, what happens, when you push the pedal...? ... when the car DOESN'T accelerate, you realize, you have NO clue...-
funny enough, this forum is CROWDED with people, who don't own a driver's license, but try to explain, the car manufacturer has done big bugs, lots of mistakes, should fix that & this.- you CAN use a car, to boil eggs, iron your shirts and create a painting... but THAT would need a better understanding of how a car works.
topics which are/can not understood lead to what the behaviorism calls "superstitious behavior" - you do some really weird things, because you believe it has any effect....
so, sometimes, less knowledge leeds to better results
(from a communicator's point of view)
I agree, maybe the "help" files should offer an "expert" mode....

  • Why is the quality of my burned DVD (IMovie) so inferior?

I made a slide show with my digital photos using Imovie which looks great, but when I burned it to a DVD using IDVD, and then watched it on my TV the quality was not nearly as clear. I chose "large" when I was setting up the IDVD program. Is there something else I should be doing or is that just normal? Thanks so much.

  • Quality degrades on burning dvd

Very frustrating. While we wait for the next 3 and a half hours for the next DVD to burn, perhaps someone can explain to me the process of getting a high quality dvd after I'm imported HD into iMOVIE.
I read a post from a few years back that suggested saving for "MEDIA BROWSER" vs. iDVD as they had the same problem (barber pole, blurred b/g. artifacts).
So, it took 6 hrs today to render the 2 hr recording and I then started to build the iDVD with chapters, again, the third attempt now. Attempt, meaning to get a copy without the artifacts, barber pole, blurrs, etc. Each one has burned, but they look lousy.
So, this time I get two versions of this vid: a 1280 x 720 7.9gb version and the "Large" 960 x 580 3gb version. I am assuming I should chose the former.
How do I know that is the one I've chosen? How do I remove the other one if I don't want it to ever show up again? How am I SURE that I've actually dragged and dropped the 1280 one into the drop zone? The other file keeps "highlighting" ? What is the trick? Why is this so difficult? I also now need to remove three versions of this "film" as they are taking up 20+gb. When I do a search how do I know which to remove?

Here's a solution that I did. An answer. Step by step. I'll post the other questions one at a time to see if there are answers to those as well.
Using iMovie 09 and iDVD 09.
Notes: Do NOT choose iDVD when asked where to SHARE or EXPORT, even though these are logical. If you do, your burn will look crappy when you play it back on a HD tv. Save yourself the 12+hours I spent learning this over 2 days.
    iMovie
(Be sure and note EXACTLY what you called the movie because you will need to find it later. Try to make the name as unique as possible, dates, times, version as you may not be able to easily find it.)
    Share>Media Browser
    Choose HD 1280 x 720>Publish
    Wait.......
    Launch iDVD
    Open New Project, Name it.
    Choose a Theme
On the right hand side you'll see THEMES - BUTTONS - MEDIA
    Choose Media
Now, here's where it is tricky.
    Find your movie.
    I"ll wait.....
Now, in my case I had TWO choices (versions) of the SAME movie, named the same thing. (OOOPS).
One was called "LARGE" the other "720p" But looking closely I see the size of LARGE is 3GB. The 720p is 7.9GB. Larger means better quality, so choose the one that is better quality if you have more than one version because you've tried to do this a couple times like I did. Can't tell you how to get rid of the other one yet. I think you have to just go and buy an external hard drive once the computer is filled with files you want to get rid of but can't because it's a mystery where they are. And remember, since you can't see the size when you use "search" and these are both versions of the same named film, you can't be sure your eliminating the one you want to eliminate.
Build your scene selections as you normally would.
Then simply burn to the DVD now and wait the 3+ hrs.
The quality of the DVD was as good as a commercial DVD placed on an HD TV. The menu is soft though; don't know why that happened and will play with it a little more, but the quality of the movie is superb for standard DVD on an HD TV.
Now....let's see if we can not reclaim the 20 gb from the 3 burns that didn't go well.

  • Problem burning DVDs, NEED HELP QUICK

    Hey,
I need help as soon as possible. I am using iMovieHD 5.0.2, along with iDVD 5.0.1. I have made a movie about 8 minutes long and all in all it totals 7.68Gigs, and i've tried burning it to a dvd. I did all the steps it says to, going to Share, sharing it with iDVD, then trying to burn it in iDVD. Yet whenever it asks me to insert a recordable dvd, i do, and the computer fails to recognize it. I am using a DVD-R, 4.7GB discs, 4x. I then realized that the movie i was trying to burn was larger than this disc, which might be the problem. I then created a 200mb movie and tried, but the same problem happened. My G5 is not recognizing the blank dvds, yet when i insert a dvd that was made a while ago from a different source, yet the same type of dvd, it plays fine.
The problem seems to be in recognizing the blank DVD, and im pretty sure that its compatible with this computer, being that it plays when theres already a movie on it.
Can someone please help me quickly, this is for a production company and we're losing out every day that i dont get this done. Thanks a million.

I don't have an answer, but as an initial diagnostic step, try loading a blank DVD while iDVD is not running. First open your System Preferences and select the CD/DVD icon. Make sure the options selected do not say "Ignore". Then load a blank disc. Depending on your preferences, you should get some sort of reaction - either a burn window opens or you get a prompt asking you what to do. If there's no reaction from the Finder, it would indicate that the drive is not recognizing the blank DVD. This would be either a hardware or a media compatibility problem. Only way to tell for sure is to run out and try a different brand of media.

  • Poor Quality Video upon Burning. Please--desperate for answers

Hello. I am trying to put my thesis on a DVD...it is 29 minutes long and the export out of final cut is 11.9 GB using the compression DVCPRO 720p60...which is what we shot at.
I tried putting it into DVD studio pro and it looked fine in the simulator, 16:9 letterboxed. But upon burning it the image is BOXY and PIXELATED. Like an atari video game, even on the still image (not aliasing).
So I brought it into compressor with the setting 90 minutes bes quality dvd to see in the preview the same boxy image.
    What do I do???
my bit rates are at 7.5 average and 8.9 highest. Please, I have an interview with production companies in 2 days and need to put this on a dvd....

Are you viewing it on a SD TV, HDTV, a computer monitor set to actual size, or a computer monitor set to fill the screen?
All DVDs are standard definition. So all your HD footage is being scaled down to SD resolution, which on a HDTV or a computer monitor set to fill the screen, looks soft and pixelated.
That being said, Compressor does not do a great job of turning HD footage directly into SD MPEG-2 video. Either first convert your HD video to a SD video, and then compress it to a MPEG-2. Or using the same settings in Compressor, this time turn on Frame Controls (which dramatically increases render times.)
Menus are a separate issue altogether. You might consider stating a new thread for your menus stating exactly how you created your menus.
