Poor quality video output - final cut studio 2

hi all,
i shot some footage in HD (1080p). it looks great in the clips from the camera as well as in fcp but when i output its very grainy. how can i retain the HD quality? i am not sure what i should be exporting it as. its going onto a dvd and will be used for commerical puporses in a small restaurant. i tried compressor but know next ot nothing about that and the footage came out the same.
thanks!

You need to focus (and maybe read a bit) on the output from FCP. Do not concern yourself with Compressor or anything else until you are happy with the output from FCP because it doersn't get any better than it is at that point.
If the 1080p shows up in your browser with a Compressor description of H.264, you need to transcode it into ProRes (or equiv) before editing.
Your timeline should be fully rendered, then export using File>Export>QuickTime Movie using Current Settings and make sure the "Make Movie Self-Contained" option is selected. This should look just like the timeline when played in QuickTime Player. If it doesn't, we'll need all your sequence settings and kindred info when you post back.
If it looks OK in QT Player, simply import it to Compressor and select the appropriate output format. If you're not sure what the format should be, post back with your presentation plans.
Good luck

  • Can I burn BluRay hi-def video W/ Final Cut Studio & external BluRay burner

    According to this Apple website:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/whats-new.html
and Selecting the demo video: “Easy Export”,
I should be able with a new iMac and the latest version of Final Cut Studio, edit high definition 1920x1080i video from my Canon HV30, select a beautiful menu with chapter markers from DVD Studio Pro, and export to an external Blu-Ray burner and produce a Blu-Ray DVD disc compatible with most Blu-Ray players.
Reading through these Discussion forums, I get mixed messages that this can’t be done, or can only be done with limitations, even using the latest FCP Studio suite of Compressor, DVD Studio Pro, etc.
Other forum contributors recommend using Boot Camp and PC video editing software to get the Blu-Ray DVD.
And please don’t tell me to use Toast 10 Titanium to burn a Blu-Ray movie onto a standard DVD. I never got a successful burn from Toast, and the menus/chapters just don’t work nor compare with iDVD.
I am currently successfully burning standard definition, 16x9 DVD’s using Final Cut Express 3.5 and iDVD 7.0.4 with chapters, beautiful menus, with background music, etc, … using a 2004 iMacG5 PPC. The DVD video looks pretty good, but it is not hi-Def, and inferior to the video coming out of the Canon when connected directly to my Sony Plasma.
Can I, or can I NOT, ……..burn hi-def 1920x1080 video onto BluRay media (with an external Blu-Ray Lacie? Burner) using a new Apple iMac and the latest Final Cut Studio software?
I’m having second thoughts about spending a lot of money with Apple to get this done.
    Thank You in Advance
    BoBo

Here's what you can do with the latest version of Final Cut Studio.
-From within Final Cut Pro you can use the Share function from the menu.
-This gives you several output options (DVD, iPod H264, etc..). Select BluRay
-Click the create disk checkbox and a menu will slide out. This will enable you to add a basic pre-made menu for the disc. There are a few options, some being built-in menus with animations.
-You can choose to export directly to a BD-R, to a DVD using AVCHD rendering, or to hard disk. I suggest hard disk. This will create a disc image file you can then burn using disk utility. FCP may start beach-balling during the burn process and you could waste a disc.
-You then can click create, OR you can click Send to Compressor after making your menu selections. From Compressor you can make additional settings changes.
I've been creating blurays this way since November. I use the Lacie external BD-R burner over USB. We've had a good experience so far. Some older bluray players will need their firmware updated to view these discs. While the quality isn't on par with hollywood produced blurays, it is still very impressive. The footage we've shot with the Panasonic AG-HPX170 and taken to bluray has blown our clients away.
Notes: You cannot view the bluray you've created on your mac. You will need to test the disc on a stand-alone player or a bluray capable PC. As mentioned earlier, the menus it creates are very basic but functional. Loop option, chapter menus, and chapter titles as subtitles are as advanced as it gets.
If you have additional questions please ask.

  • Poor quality video output

Hello to all as this my first post, I'm kinda hoping I can call upon the wealth of experience here to help sort out my issue as I really need your help.
    Ok, here goes...
I produce architectural animations in 3dsmax, each frame is rendered out to targa & jpeg format as high quality stills @ 1280 x 720 resolution. For the simple stuff I have two passes, beauty and AO which are composited in Autodesk Toxic before being passed onto premiere CS4.
Now when I import the still sequences into premiere and add the titles and effects all looks well in the rendered preview, when I export to media encoder the video looks just awful with banding, fuzziness and artifacts a plenty.
I am not an experienced user, I've been stuck in at the deep end and i'm sinking fast. I've tried pretty much all out the format presets with limited success but have been totally unable to the the final output any where near the still quailty. I'd like a high quailty output matching the still resoultion which can be burned onto DVD and played on computer and through a DVD player.
Can anyone point me in the right direction or tell where I'm going wrong as I'm tearing my hair out with frustration and I'm already two days late on this.
Yours hopefully in anticipation of some helpful advice
    Roy

Ok, having checked, the DVD requirement has been dropped which helps me a little, now the only requirement is to play on a pc connected to a large screen tv via HDMI.
So far, with the help from this forum, I've managed to export the sequence, in 1280 x 720p @ 24FPS to a bluray format which has an M4P extension. Despite installing the required codecs I can't play the file on the PC. Does this need further conversion? If so would this need to be done in Encore or another porgram?
Again, apologies for the endless questions but I really am up against my deadline here so any help & advice is very welcome.

  • Poor quality video output from iMovie 08

I have tried to save or export videos on several occasions, their output quality is always very poor.
Recently, I needed to translate videos from MPG, MOV, AVI etc.. using various translation tools. I am not sure how much quality I lost during those translations (I wish iMovie would import something, anything!).
I have saved my projects and also tried exporting to the highest resolution in both cases. When playing back within PowerPoint or QuickTime (7pro or 10) the quality is so bad I almost can't recognize the people in the video.
Does iMovie 09 do a better job with output or am I just using the wrong tool?
    Thanks in advance.

not sure if i'm having the same issue or not, but i'm having problems with iMovie 08, and exporting my finished project, and having the frame rate be goood, or the resolution stay good, or both. I've tried m4v, avi, mpeg4 and they worked in quality in that order, but m4v still didn't have as good as resolution as the original file. Is there an option that automatically goes with original framerate, and resolution? What should I be doing for best visual quality in general?

  • New imac with FInal cut studio?

    Hi everyone,
I am looking at getting one of the new imacs for video editing (Final cut studio 2). The specs for final cut are 4 gig of ram (for some applications in the bundle).
I wanted to know, do I have to buy my ram from apple when I buy my mac, or can i upgrade it myself? And if so, would the imac be upto the job? From what I can see there isn't much difference between the new imac and the macbook pro (which is what I was going to get).
Also, what if the difference in (laymans terms, please) in the intel duo and the intel duo extreme? Is it a big difference for editing, or not worth the extra money?
Also (apologies for all the questions, i have no where else to get the answers) - can you attatch another display - such as a monitor or laptop to the new macs for editing?
    Thanks.
    Lawrence

as with all iMac and Macbook computers, there is a complete lack of expansion capabilities beyond a single firewire bus.
most potential buyers rationlize their purchasing of a lessor machine based upon length of project, type of video, hoping to get by, pick your poison. this is short-sighted as it's irrelevant. video, no matter which flavor, is processor intensive.
what else will you do with your computer? will you hook up a printer, a scanner, external harddrives, a card reader, a tape machine, perhaps rs422 control? how will you monitor hdv properly? how will you monitor audio? will you wander into surround sound mixing?
the iMac is a great computer but beware, just because others have used it successfully doesn't mean it's the shoe that will fit your foot the best. as i said, the iMac is woefully inadequate for any sort of expansion beyond a single firewire bus.
    buyer beware.

  • MacBook 2.16Ghz Black and Final Cut Studio 2

    Hello,
    Is the black MacBook with:
    2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB memory
    200GB hard drive1
    Double-layer SuperDrive
Capable of running Final Cut Studio 2? Obviously I would probably need more hard drive space to edit a proper video so I'm thinking of buying a firewire hard drive as well but for now I would be editing videos that would be no longer then 30 minutes and recorded with a SD camcorder, not High Definition video.
Final Cut Studio 2 says it requires:
An AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card (Final Cut Studio is not compatible with integrated Intel graphics processors)
    and
A display with 1024-by-768 resolution or higher
I couldn't see anything on the online store (mac) to tell me if this macbook has either of those. I assume it'll have 1024x768 but I know nothing about graphics cards.
If anyone can let me know about this I would GREATLY appreciate it.

    No.the MacBook's integrated GPU can't handle FCS 2.
Although it easily handles Final Cut Express.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 Video Output

I just received Final Cut Studio 2. I had been using Final Cut Express HD and had my camera connected to the computer which was connected to another monitor for viewing playback. I cannot seem to figure out how to do this with Final Cut Studio 2. I have everything plugged in the same way, but it will not work. Any suggestions?
    iMac

I hope this still works for FCP 6:
    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Does Final Cut Studio deliver better quality than Final Cut Express

If my export target is Apple-TV 720p, is there any difference between the quality delivered in Final Cut Express versus the new Final Cut Studio? E.g. is it the same because Quicktime is doing it? I read something on the FCS home page that it "adapted the quality to the video content"? So would FSC somehow be better at utilizing the maximum 5Mbps data stream compared to FCE? Thanks.
    -Troels

+is there any difference between the quality delivered in Final Cut Express versus the new Final Cut Studio?+
Not really, not per se, for this purpose. There are many factors at play, very important among them is the nature of your source media - if it is shot on a high quality camera and captured in ProRes or one of the other higher quality codecs supported by FCS then maybe you would see a difference. What are you using?

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and video app chaos

    Hi,
Did anyone find after installing Final Cut Studio 2 that their 3rd party apps to do with video extraction/conversion suddenly start to unexpectedly quit when in operation? It's a brand new MacPro, lovely machine until Final Cut software went and messed things up. I won't mention the trouble I had to install both Logic Studio and FCS since they both share similar components and included apps, Apple's installer is not designed to cope and I had to mess about with the receipts folder to get both installed. This page was available yesterday http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1110?locale=en_GB to give an insight of the problems between the two. Anyhow, I think the best solution is to remove Final Cut software as I'm not up for spending hours debugging.

I had a huge issue pop up with me too...and I figured the best way was to wipe the drive, install the OS and FCP from scratch. Took a day, but better than spending more time trying to figure things out.

  • Final Cut Studio & Size Of Video Player Window

I'm not sure if the answer to my question begins in Final Cut or a later step:
I produce online videos for clients in Final Cut, and in the end product I have been using 320 x 240 screen size, as it seems to have been the standard for modest file size and quick streaming.
Now on many sites I see a much larger video window that begins streaming crystal clear video almost immediately. If I can make larger videos for my clients I'd love to, but I'm not familiar with this technique except for creating the video as a massive file when exporting from Final Cut into the Windows Media export option with Flip4Mac and WMV.
What's the trick? And can Macs do it?
    Thanks from Gina

Hard to say what others might be doing unless we can see what exactly you're talking about. Can you point us to one of the sites you're hoping to emulate?
But to attempt to answer your larger question, sure you can do what they do, for the most part, with Final Cut Studio. I'd wager that the bulk of videos available on the web, from producers as varied as major media corporations to dorky podcasters are produced with FCS on Macs.
The bulk of the videos on the web - especially those that load particularly quickly - are Flash files though, so yeah, you'll need some outside tools to emulate that aspect of things.

  • Final Cut Studio Videos

    Hi Guys,
A while ago I found a bunch of really good 'getting started' videos on the apple website for products within the Final Cut Studio such as Final Cut Pro, but now I cant seem to find them anywhere, have they been removed?
I think the first video was all about setting up Final Cut Pro.
    Thanks in advance,
    Nick

Yes, Apple doesn't have them on line anymore.
For the most part, they merely explained new features and nothing more.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 upgrade ruined my HD video files!

Okay, now I'm really puzzled. I installed Final Cut Studio 2 to upgrade my PowerMac G5. Now, all the HD footage I recorded, both in iMovie HD and in FCP 5 from my Sony HDR-FX1 camera has annoying green and red streaks that flash repeatedly. Even iMovie HD has the same problem when playing back old HD projects. The streaks also appear if I try playing the files back through Quicktime Player.
How do I know that the upgrade was the issue? As luck would have it, I still had my copy of FCP 5 installed. I opened one of the old HD projects in version 5 format in FCP 5, and the video plays back perfectly. Load the same project into FCP 6, and streaks.
Exactly how is this an "upgrade"? How do I fix?

    Issue
Earlier versions of the applications in Final Cut Studio might not open or may behave unexpectedly if you use them on your computer after upgrading to Final Cut Studio 2.
When you upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2, there are a number of application-support resources that also get upgraded. Earlier versions of the applications in Final Cut Studio are not compatible with these newer support resources, and should not be used on a computer that has been upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2.
    Affected Products:
    Final Cut Pro
    Motion
    Soundtrack Pro
    Compressor
    DVD Studio Pro
    Qmaster
    Cinema Tools
    LiveType
    Solution
Don't move or rename Final Cut Studio applications after they're installed. If you have moved or renamed applications, they may still be present on your hard drive after you upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2. You can delete the vestigial applications them by dragging them to the Trash.

  • New iPod Touch-want to load videos created using Final Cut Studio

I'm unable to transfer movies I create on my Mac into the iPod Touch. I'm assuming all transfers to the iPod need to go through iTunes - is this correct?
I created a video in Final Cut Pro, then compressed two versions of podcasts in Compressor.
H.264 for iPod video and iPhone 320x320(QVGA)
H.264 for iPod video and iPhone 640x640(QVGA)
I then dragged them into iTunes library, thinking they would go into the Podcast folder, but instead they went to the Movie folder.
I synced to the iPod, and they fail to transfer/load. I then selected "Create iPod or iPhone Version" from the iTunes "Advanced" menu in case there was some file issue, but was unsuccessful in dragging it to the Podcast folder.
Does the iPod Touch sync up to all iTune's folders, or, is it limited to what's in the Podcast folder?
Is there a utility that exists to verify the video files are of the correct format.
Are there other steps I am missing?

For anyone else in the same situation - videos created in Final Cut Pro and compressed using either of the Compressor settings will create podcasts that can be synced up and play on the iPod Touch,
The problem was the "Sync Movies" setting - it was disabled. The challenge was finding the settings, and wouldn't have been an issue prior to release of version 3.0 software upgrade notice.
The "Sync" settings were where I first looked, from within iTunes, but as I said, the device settings were being hidden by an "Apple commercial" for the version 3.0 software upgrade - once I clicked on "Remind Me Later" I was able to see the 8 tabbed configuration screen. I guess marketing trumps usability.
