Poor quality when reducing size of raster layer

When reducing the size of an image layer, I am seeing very different quality between regular raster layers and smart object layers.
See this image for an example:
Both versions of the image were resized after duplicating the same source layer.
They were then resized to 20% of their original size.
In the top example, the layer was resized immediately after being duplicated.
In the bottom example the layer was converted to a smart object before resizing.
You will notice that the top version of the image has considerably more artifacting than the bottom.
The quality of the raster layer size reduction also seems to have degraded since CS5.
I am using the bicubic setting in Preferences > General > Image Interpolation.
Switching that option around has made very little difference.
Does anyone have any insight into this?
Are others seeing the same phenomenon?

In CS6, like CS5, the resampling method when transforming a Smart Object is that which is defined in Preferences > General. However, unlike CS5, CS6 has an independent resampling control in the Options bar when a raster layer is being transformed. Looks like you had Nearest Neighbour selected there.

At that size it sounds like you have inserted lots of photos at too large a size and resolution.
Especially for a year book style project, first determine your image sizes and crop and fix the resolution to 300 dpi, then drag them into the publication. Pages does not use external references to files and rapidly grows to quite large size unless you trim and size your images before placement.

Image pixelating when reducing size

Good Day
I created a 1318x358 PNG (300DPI, Anti-Aliasing - Type Optimized) from Illustrator.
Now I reduced the image in photoshop from 1318 to 800 pixels, and it is creating some edge blurring.
Look at the image below.
How can I take away that blurring effect when reducing the size? Even if I save it as PNG-24, with highest quality settings, it still does that effect.

That's normal and expected behavior with bitmapped images.
Also, the more decimals in the percentage of reduction while keeping the aspect ratio, the greater the number of artifacts. That's why some pixels dimensions work better than others.
Try using vectors instead of pixels, or at least work with Smart Objects to minimize the artifacts.
The main problem here is that you are using the wrong application for that illustration, which clearly would be optimally drawn as vectors in Adobe Illustrator.

Very poor quality when exporting slideshow

I am using a Canon 5D, and when I view the images in Full screen. They are gorgeous. I created a slideshow. When I play the slideshow in Aperture - again they are gorgeous and crisp, however when I export these images to a Quicktime movie they look blurry - almost like they were taken with a regular point and shoot.
I have selected Export > HD 720p
I understand that slideshows are generated from previews, so I went to Aperture > Preferences > Previews and selected Photo Preview > Don't limit & for Photo Preview Quality I selected 12 (high).
I kept the 2 selections that were there on default selected (these are: new projects automatically generate previews, and use embedded JPEG from camera whenever possible)
Then I selected all of the images in the slideshow, and when I right clicked and selected "Update Previews" I received the message saying that the previews were already up to date. I exported the slideshow - and the quality was still poor.
I then tried to update the previews from the items in the individual libraries themselves instead of selecting the images in the Slideshow (hoping that would make a difference), and tried to update the previews. But I got the same error.
What am I missing? Why am I seeing excellent quality when I preview the slideshow when I click the Full Screen play button - but when I export it to 720p HD it looks horrendous.
Please help!

FTF you need to hold down the alt key when selecting the images and choose generate preview. The update preview option maintains previous settings. Using alt/option creates a new preview.
Second HD720p is still significantly below the resolution of your display so the images will look softer.
But try the previews first and post back.

Image Mask Error Message when Reducing Size of PDF

With my Mac, I embed jpg images in Microsoft Word documents, save them as pdf's, and reduce them. Size reduction often fails, with the error message "The PDF document contained image masks that were not downsampled". Jpegs don't have masks, so I have no idea how to fix this problem, and an extensive google search was of no assistance.

Use PNG images instead use an application such as Graphics Converter, Fireworks to convert to .png from .jpg.
Will have much better images that do not degrade each time they are opened and most often they end up being same size than jpeg's
Jpeg unless you save as a special type is a Lossy format and each time is open (and decompressed) then closed (and then compressed) losses detail
Just open and magnify a jpeg after its been open 5-20 times you notice an out of focus halo looking similar looking to water spilled on paper wil pen ink on it. And it get progressively worse. PNG on the other hand is not lossy and if the original is saved as png never degrade even when reduced in size or or expand within reason in size. I've being dealing with photos screenshots, images and other for years. Despite what other may say on this list may say if you want an image with little trouble for years of service save as png.

Internal mic poor quality when recording in iMovie

I noticed exceptionally poor quality of internal mic when recording acoustic guitar piece on iMovie, with the built in iSight camera. Technically, the sound is called "Phasing" - it sounds like a slow 'whoosh' over all of the audio.
After investigation, I have found the cause to be the Ambient Noise Reduction algorithm added by Apple.
To remove this - go to:
System Preferences
Sound
Input
*uncheck* 'use ambient noise reduction'

Now my question - does anyone know how to use the iSight (built in) and simultaneously and synchronously record audio using an External Mic - eg the Blue "Snowball" - which is a USB mic.
In theory, the mic should plug in and then show up as an external device, but when I select iSight camera as my video source - the Powerbook automatically assumes that I want to use the internal mic as my audio source.
Have tried to go to Sys Prefs and change 'Input' to USB - but no option to do so

unfortunately, it's got nothing to do with MIDI (which is just a series of controller information)
The Blue 'Snowball' External mic is essentially a 'USB Device' and should be recognised as such by the Mac. The data will come in as 16bit, 44.1khz AES bit stream and then be assigned a destination.
The problem is that iMovie does NOT allow me to separate the iSight camera from recording with 'internal mic'
I want a way of finding how to seperate them - and then assign the USB mic to be associated with the iSight camera - giving me iMovie/iSight videos - with PROFESSIONAL sound

Master file is poor quality when played in QT

I have a 45 minute documentary that was ingested as native into FCPX from a Sony XDCAM, compressed in compressor using mpeg-2 for DVDSP.
All this worked fine.
My question is about the master file. It is 422 (same as source)and Linear PCM. Playback in QT is pretty poor quality.
I optimized (as I was working in proxy) before creating the master file.
My question is, is this normal or did I choose the wrong settings?

compressed in compressor using mpeg-2 for DVDSP.
It is 422 (same as source)and Linear PCM.
I don't believe this is correct. If it's compressed for DVDSP it's going to the DVD standard and is no longer 422. The audio is separate and is normally compressed to an AC3 Dolby Digital file.

How do l preserve image quality when reducing the size of my brochure for use as a pdf?

l've designed a brochure full of my work, and reduced the size so l can email the final pdf...but my test recipients are saying the images are not sharp...they are too soft.
Can anyone help me preserve image sharpness?

Don't use the resize feature as the images will be changed to 72 dpi. Resize the images BEFORE adding them to Pages. Make them about 200 dpi if they are to be printed. You can have less resolution if the pdf is only for the screen.

Poor quality when importing from sony dcr-sr58

Dear All
I've got a sony dcr-sr58e video camera, and for ages the quality has been poor, once i've, a) imported the footage from the camera into imovie then b) from there to idvd then c) watching it back on a tv
I thought it was just me being fussy, but friends and colleagues have noticed that its quality is comparable with an old vhs video camera!
I put all the settings to the max (high quality etc....)on the camera but to no effect, and have checked the settings on imovie
The sony support have stated that its probably a problem with imovie (which it doesn't seem to be)
Fot the record i'm running OSX 10.6.8 with imovie version 9.0.4
If anyone else has had a similar problem and solve dit i'd be very grateful to hear

Hello kellyfromkenley, Depending on how you move the video or share the video from iMovie to iDVD it can make a big difference. One way is to go to the Share Menu > Share to iDVD. But the better is to Share to Media Browser instead. Try this:
Go back to iMovie and open your Project in Project Library.
Go to Share Menu > Share to Media Browser
Choose the Large size and let it run until it finishes
Quit iMovie and open iDVD.
In iDVD click on the Media Button, then click on the Movies button and look for your project under the iMovie star icon in the Media Browser itself.
Drag that project icon into the iDVD project window and burn another disk
I think you'll see an increase in the visual quality using this method.
The reason this has an effect on the visual quality is there's a whole different set of operations performed on the video when you first Share to Media Browser. The side effect of those changes in steps is a much better looking DVD from your iMovie project.

Poor quality when uploaded to youtube, etc.

My iMovie videos look great on my monitor. However when I upload them to video sites like Youtube, Google videos, Viddler, etc, the resulting video quality is very poor. I've submitted them as .avi, mp4, quicktime. Doesn't make any difference; they all turn out looking bad.

Not totally. You may, however, be able to improve the quality but, in the end, you are simply limited to the quality that is compatible with the rather low data rates used by such sites when they convert your files to FLV for display. Basically, you are submitting a file from iMovie '08 as either a "Mobile" (a 480 width clip targeted at 1.0 Mbps) or "Medium" (640 width clip at 1.7 Mbps) and YouTube scales it down to a 320 width clip with a total data rate between 0.10 Mbps and 0.35 Mbps which is probably selected automatically depending on the actual length and quality of your submission.
I'm not a YouTube user, but my general advice would be to keep your submissions short to maximize "headroom" during the conversion process. (I.e., don't submit a max duration or high data rate clip since it simply means that YouTube will have to discard a higher percentage of your data during the transcoding process to Sorenson H.264/MP3 making the visual differences between your submitted source file and the FLV file even more obvious to your eyes.)

My personal advice would be to upload files in a better quality compression format to a personal web site if you really want to control the quality of your output display.

Very Poor Quality when burning to regular DVD

Can somebody tell me why when i burn to regular dvd the quality looks like a vhs video which is out of focus ? When i burn to blu ray its crystal clear !! I dont expect great great quality but i would expect something that is watchable !!

Well if you are working with Premiere Elements 10 or above and want high Blue ray Quality content on DVD discs, then you have got the option of AVCHD disks in Share->Disc->AVCHD.
But due to high bit rate, the amount of content that can be burnt on to AVCHD disks is much lesser than on to DVD disks.
You can change the bit rate and increase the amount of content that can be burnt(but that will once again start diminshing quality)
You will have to manage this quality-size tradeoff.

Very poor quality when viewing DVD on TV

I have searched this forum high and low, but every response I have tried to this issue does not seem to work. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated. I am using FCS2 on a new 8-core Intel Mac Pro desktop. All of the footage is shot on High Def AVCHD Cameras and ripped from Log and Transfer in FCP. My video is about 1 hour, 5 minutes. The problem I have is that the quality looks great in the MOV file export, but when I burn it to a DVD, it looks like garbage. It's all grainy and the quality a really poor. Here is my workflow:
1) Video is created in Final Cut Pro (no chapters at this point), its all 1 video
2) Video is exported using Quicktime. I use the selected settings, and uncheck Recompress All Frames, and select use chapter markers
3) I compress the video for SD DVD in Compressor, using 120min Best Quality DVD, default settings with this option.
4) I put the audio and video file in my assets for DVD Studio Pro, then Drag them onto the video. I removed the menu item, and changed the video to "play first". I then click Format/Burn.
The DVD formats and burns, and it plays fine. But the quality *****. The raw MOV file looks great. It's clearly interlaced yet at the time of export from FCP, but I am assuming that is normal. Any ideas, or am I doing anything wrong?

I suspect we are missing a few factors in your situation. Let me ask a few questions and make a suggestion or two so we can figure this thing out.
1) What is the make and model of your TV?
2) Are you telling DVD Studio Pro that the movie you've converted to SD is anamorphic?
3) You did tell Compressor you wanted the SD movie to be 16:9, didn't you?
4) To help troubleshoot, try this: In FCP, mark In to Out around a ten second portion of the Timeline, and go to File > Export > QuickTime Movie. Make it self contained but do not re-compress all frames.
5) Quit FCP, open DVDSP and change the Preferences in DVDSP to create an HD DVD title. Import the QT Movie you exported from FCP, drop it into a vidoe track, make it a First Play on the disc and Format it onto your hard drive. Play it in DVD Player and tell us how it looks.
6) If it looks fine, burn it to a DVD disc and play it in your Apple computer. How does it look?
7) Now create a new project in DVDSP, make it a SD DVD project, import the same QT Movie you exported from FCP. Drop it into a video track, make it First Play on the disc, and Format it. Play it in DVD Player. How does it look?
8) Then burn it to a DVD and play it on your Apple computer. How does it look?
9) Now, play it in an external DVD player on am SD television. How does it look?
Please do all that, then reply back to this thread with the answers to all of these questions. I think we'll be closer to resolving the problem after that.
Do not reformat your hard drive or reinstall your OS yet. It is far too soon for that over-reaction. Maybe later, but I seriously doubt that will help anything.

Very poor quality when importing a video done with CAMSTUDIO

I am using a video done in camstudio. THe source video is perfect, very sharp all excellent.
when i bring it into Priemiere CS4, the quality ebcomes horrible making it almost unviewable (for annoying)

The video captures in Camstudio was full screen, the Premiere Settings where set at DV, Widescreen...but trying other settings didn't help either

What frame rate did you use for the screen cap?
What frame rate did you use to process the .camrec files?
What format and codec did you use to process the .camrec files?
Do you need to show the whole screen for the whole video? If so, you need a Pr sequence that matches the frame size of your screen cap. If you want to zoom in to highlight certain areas of the screen, then you need a smaller frame size for your Pr sequence, but it still should have the same aspect ratio of the original capture.
Finally, your screen cap is progressive. Make sure your Pr sequence is set to No Fields.

Poor quality when exporting Explain Everything Video

Hi There,
I've created some videos in using the "Explain Everything" App on my iPad. When I save the videos to my iPad camera roll and play them back they look fantastic. When I emailed the videos to myself and opened them up in my MacBook, the quality is quite poor (blurry). The same thing was true when I tried to open the emailed file back onto the same iPad it was originally created on.
I'm hoping to be able to take these good quality videos and insert them into Final Cut Pro.
Does anyone know why this might be happening?

Why poor quality when I export in HD?

I've shot some video on a Panaonic HDC-HS9, imported in original quality, edited it up, and want to export it in HD quality, for later use on DVD and YouTube HD.
When I export it using the standard setting HD 1080x720 (in the export movie... option), the quality is pretty poor, nowhere near HD standard, although the original footage is crystal clear.
Am I importing wrongly? Exporting wrongly?
The exported files are about 100MB per minute, so should look very sharp on my MacBook screen, rather than fuzzy.

I'm kind of a novice at this stuff, but if you select "Export using QuickTime..." instead of "Export Movie...", you have a lot more options to choose from. In particular, you can choose a 1920 x1080 resolution, which should improve the quality of your movie (but it will take about 4x longer to export and the file will be about 3x bigger). There are a lot of other choices as well... wish I knew what they all meant!
