Poor resolution RAW import

When importing a RAW fil to LR the quality become very poor, without Im doing anything. I do not have the same problem when importing a JPEG in LR or a RAW file in Elements for example. Is there any setting that should be changed?
The problem is very visable on saturated colors, it becomes like fields, difficult to explain, but kind of similar to a poor TV screed resolution. (It is not my computerscreen as I have tried several other screens, and the problem remains.)
Thankful for help!

I added a JPEG photo also.
First picture is the RAW photo imported in LR, second one a JPEG imported. I have done nothing to non of them...

• Poor resolution after importing to iMovie 10

I've just upgraded to iMovie 10 and Mavericks from 9 and my old clips are now displaying with what appears to be a poor resolution. When I watch them in 9 they look much richer.....thoughts?

i am having the same issue. tried "adjust colors" in the video FX and the preview looked great, but application of the effect left the clip unchanged.
did you get any help from another source (since this seems to be without responses)?

• Poor resolution on imported photos

When I import a jpg photo into FC express 3.0 it looks great in the viewer - but when I put it into the timeline and look at it in the the canvas it has lost a lot of resolution - subsequent rendering may even make the resolution worse.

When you put it into the timeline you're converting it to an interlaced format designed for encoding live action into video for television display. Are you looking at the rendered output on a video monitor? The image may not be suitable for use in a video format.

• Poor resolution on imported .png graphics

Hello fellow Pages users:
I am importing .png graphics made in an opensource drawing program. The original graphics are .svgs and then they are converted to .png graphics. When I look at the graphics in Preview they look fine, but when I drag them into Pages they become 'fuzzy' looking.
Does anyone have any idea why this is hapenning or what I can do about it.
Any help will be VERY much appreciated!!

SVGs are vector graphics. They are rasterized when you save as PNG. Try converting to PDF instead of PNG.

• External pictures only on low resolution after import from iPhoto to Photos

Moved to the new Photos app. All pictures that were in my iPhoto library file are OK but the pictures that were stored outside the library folder are visible only on very very poor resolution (looks like only the thumbnail was imported and shown on full size, very pixelated). This is quite disappointing. Tried the File->Consolidate menu option to copy the picture to the library but that didn't help either.
When I import them again they come back in high resolution, but I got them all nicely grouped into Events in iPhoto and don't want to loose that.

Delete the migrated version, repair the Library with iPhoto and try again.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

• Optimal resolution for importing graphics?

What is the best resolution for importing background images into keynote? I'm working on a 800 x 600 presentation and am wondering what resolution of file I can get away with using as I have quite a few full background images. Can I get away with 72 dpi?
thx.

Forget about DPI.
DPI (Dots Per Inch) is absolutely meaningless in this world. Why? Because INCHES are meaningless in this world of the screen and projector, where EVERYTHING is measured in PIXELS.
Your screen is 800 x 600 pixels. That means, for optimum image quality, your background image should be 800 x 600 pixels. If your images are larger than that (for instance, my camcorder can shoot stills that are 1600x1200 pixels) then you need to resize to fit your screen.
If you are using some brain-dead program that won't speak in pixels (Microsoft PowerPoint jumps immediately to mind, although that is a poor example because it is also supposed to be dealing with the screen...) then you need to do some conversions. If you have a 72 DPI image that is 4 x 3 inches, then that image will have a resolution of (72x4) x (72x3) = 288 x 216 pixels.

• Poor resolution connecting my MBP to TV via HDMI. visable vertical lines.

hey!
so I've been googeling around for awhile and it seems A LOT of people have this issue. but I haven't been able to find a solution yet. Story goes... connecting the MBP to the TV via DVI to HDMI gives poor resolution. the weird thing is this only happens every other time. I've tried it on my macbook pro (2007) and another macbook (2010) and it has the same issue with both (but only sometimes). any thoughts?
thanks!
Grant

To Csound's good advice, let me just add that there may be a specific HDMI port on the TV that you must use if you're going to send audio to the TV separately. This should also be explained in the TV's manual.

• RAW import parameters in external service

Hi all,
I'm extending an application that has been written by somebody else.
I need to connect to an RFC using CAF external services.
In this RFC one of the input parameters (GUID) is of the type RAW. When I import an external service (based on this RFC) into the NWDS. I then add is as a dependencie to my Application service, generate a webservice of my application service, build and deploy the CAF project.
When I now go the the wsnavigator, open my application service and select the operation I want to test. I fill in the paramters and send submit but the RAW import parameter GUID is not being passed on to my RFC.
In fact when I look at the SOAP message that is being sent, the GUID parameter is empty (it fills in 'AA==' while I inserted '4A53589C71132123E10000009959C278' as value).

I think this has something to do with the conversion of the input field to the RAW dataformat. Does anybody know how I can solve this?

• I have a desktop iMac,within a yr old, I had iPhoto 9,downloaded to iPhoto 11, now lost my export to Shutterfly link, & looks like all my photos went to thumbnails, with poor resolution...help!!

I have a desktop iMac OSX 10.6.8, had iPhoto 9 & downloading software update to iPhoto 11, (9.1.5??) I can't find the way to reset up the "Export to Shutterfly mode" and it looks like all my previous photos went to a thumbnail size...with now poor resolution. If I would have know my pictures were going to turn into poor quality pictures, I never would have done the software update. Need a real person to talk to. This complicated method is not user friendly.

• Poor resolution on playback of PNG slides

I'm making a video presentation consisting of *.MOD segments and PowerPoint slides that have been converted as 25-90 KB *.PNG slides. I burn the DVD. On playing the DVD on TV, the slides have very poor resolution. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help you can give.

Welcome to the forum.
What are the pixel x pixel dimensions of those PNG images. File size does not really mean anything in video.
What is your Project's Frame Size in pixels, say 1920 x 1080?
Exactly how did you convert the PowerPoint "slides" to PNG?
Good luck, and please let us know a bit more.

• Poor resolution on iPhoto book

I just ordered the large softbound iPhoto Book from Apple and am very disappointed with the poor resolution of the photos. My original files were 1280x960. Is there any way to find out if my photos are being uploaded at the highest possible res? I've read other posts about changing preferences, but haven't been able to figure out how to do that at my end.
Thanks!

Emily:
The easiest way I've found to modify preference files is with Pref Setter. Once you've located and opened the iPhoto preference file do a search for "dpi". Then change the values for the Keys BookTargetImageDIP, BookTargetSmallImageDIP and BookTargetMediumImageDIP to 300. Save and close Pref Setter. That's it.
It's interesting that you found the large book images to be poor. There was another user that received large books from both the east and west coasts. He found the east coast book to be of lower image resolution (greater halftone pattern) than that from the west coast. All of my large size books have come from the west coast and have been very good, with or without the resolution change in the preference file. Not so with the medium size books. There were patterned no matter what resolution was set in the preferences.
Good luck.

• Why won't LR5 automatically save my original RAW imports from Nikon D7100?

Why won't LR5 save my original RAW imports from D7100. I can import them and process them but the originals are then lost. What am I doing wrong? With every other camera the original RAW image is saved in the library.

Another guess as to what is happening is that your Folders panel section was accidentally closed/hidden in Library.
To fix this, right-click on another section name in the lefthand panel and put a checkmark next to Folders.
The possible sections on the left in Library are:
Navigator (which cannot be closed or right-clicked on)
Catalog
Folders
Collections
Publish Services
A variation of this situation would be that instead of hiding the Folders section entirely, you've merely collapsed it.
To reveal the list of folders click the triangle that is pointing towards Folders so that it points down at a now expanded Folders section.

• Fujifilm X100T poor quality RAW conversion?

I've been experiencing what appears to be poor quality RAW image conversion from the new Fujifilm X100T camera that is now supported by Lightroom 5.7.
It appears that Lightroom may be "honoring" the Chromatic Aberration correction that the camera itself writes to the EXIF files. This causes images with high contrast areas to appear very blurry or almost like they've had a filter applied to make them appear hand drawn. It may also be that the camera itself isn't focusing properly, but my tests confirm that the camera can focus just fine.
I've collected a few examples and additional details here:
http://bigempty.com/projects/2014/fujix100t/
Generally speaking I don't apply any in-camera sharpening, noise reduction, or other corrections as I prefer to work with the RAW file in Lightroom. The examples linked above do not apply any post-capture noise reduction, sharpening, chromatic aberration correction, or any other post-capture edits.
Has anyone else experienced this with the Fuji X100T? Is this typical of the X100 series image quality, or with Lightroom's processing of those RAW images?

Besides white-balance, Adobe software generally ignores what camera settings you use. The poor quality is just the best Adobe has been able to do with unique XTrans photosite color layout. Adobe software is apparently optimized to the common RGBG photosite layout.

RAW import Sony ILCA-77M2 funktioniert in Lightroom 5 nicht. Wer kann helfen?

The A77.2 is not listed as a newly supported camera in the ACR 8.5 RC available at Adobe Labs: http://labs.adobe.com
But it could be added before the final release of ACR 8.5, sometime before July 31st, when the RC expires. Otherwise, a new ACR plug-in is released every 3 or 4 months.

• RAW import won't work after OS upgrade

I used to import my digi-cam (Ricoh GX-100) RAW files into iPhoto without any problem, but since I updated to 10.4.11 iPhoto doesn't recognize these RAW .dng files anymore. What can be done about this? Strangely, this particular camera never has been on the supported camera list for iPhoto, but why did RAW import work before and why doesn't it now?
I should add perhaps that the cause for the malfunction could also derive from the usage of Onyx (which I downloaded from the apple-site), which I used for system optimization by clicking on the "prebinding" option - however, most likely this has nothing to do with above problem
thx

zoranT:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. A lot of users have experienced importing problems after upgrading to Leopard and not just with RAW files.
Since OnyX is not Leopard compatible, there's a beta version available that is, it might have a bearing but I wouldn't bet on it. Try the beta version to re-optimize and see if that helps.
See bdorf's post this this topic on how he fixed his importing issue: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6181481#6181481. He hasn't gotten back to me on how he re-installed Leopard but I'm guessing it was an Archive and Install.
Happy New Year
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
