Poor speeds and disconnection

Hi
Have had infinity since feb 12. All was great at start with downloads well over 10mbps . Speeds have now dropped as low as 1mbps and cannot even watch iplayer etc. Also broadband is disconnecting up to 10 times a day . Weirdly i can get it reconnected by using the phone. Any ideas on why the disconnections and also the dreadful speeds?
Many thanks

Just done a speedtest

  • Bt infinity 2 slow speeds and disconnection

hi all hi all after having spent over two hours on the phone with BT being passed from post to post from billing to technical support back to billing people slamming phones down on me and no  help what so ever today 22/05/2014 have been with bt over 5 years phone  line the broadband and all services
    it a joke now
2012 I have had fibre optic broadband service with BT and all was ok till November 2013 when start have slow speeds and in January year 2014 started having disconnections reconnection connections form 5 mins to to 60mnis or sum times 2mins  of the broadbands and the connections sometimes 3 to 4  times a day disconnections and so on .... when was supposed to be fixed the upload speed was very slow and the download speed was okay when I first started with BT with the fibre-optic broadband two years ago nearly I was averaging about 42 meg per day and average speed of upload was 6.5 Mag
but now 32.meg dowm /up is 3.5 Rwent off in February he did a shift in lift because the broadband was 42 meg download bought lacked upload speed of less than half meg for the day of the lift it ran at 52 meg  with an average upload speed of about seven meg from around February till the end of February then stat act erratically reboot the bt hub 4 rebooting all time DSL light off on the main openreach modem in one day was off and on 36 times
had  engineers visit last week 14th of May to test line all was ok with line but i had now found out that bt they'll are now only selling me option one broadband fibre-optic even though I am paying for option two they now states that the speed on my line will never go above 36 meg so why am I paying for option 2 fibre-optici be through to the billing department today said yes you are an option 2 but  the technical department to say my line will only support 36 meg and I did find out from the engineer that I am on option one and only for the supply of the broadband line but have been pay for BT infinity option2
I think this is just an easy way for BT to get out of fixing the mind correctly by downgrading the line but wanting the customer to carry on paying for option to have tried with billing to sort this problem out today they just said you need to speak to technical support technical support what support manages to say you need to speak to billing one of them even slammed the phone on me
No customer support spent over two hours on the phone today and got nowhere and one department saying we can downgrade you to option one broadband but it will cost you £30 to do so
who i speak to if billing are no help at all ??????

For all ADSL and WBC Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) services, the stable line rate will be determined during the first 10 days of service usage.
For FTTC Ranges A and B, the term "Clean" relates to a line which is free from any wiring issues (e.g. Bridge Taps) and/or Copper line conditions, and the term "Impacted" relates to a line which may have wiring issues (e.g. Bridge Taps) and/or Copper line conditions.
Throughput/download speeds will be less than line rates and can be affected by a number of factors within and external to BT's network, Communication Providers' networks and within customer premises.

  • Elitebook 8540P USB 3.0 driver speed and disconnect issues

Have 2 external SSDs in ICY Dock USB 3.0 enclosures.   If I can an SSD to the rear most USB 3 port,  the drive is available,  but only performs at up to 100MBps vs 200MBps if I connect it to the eSata port using an Icy Dock eSata enclosure.
Also,  if I plug either of the Icy Dock USB 3.0 enclosures into the front most USB3 port,   it start connecting and disconnecting all of the time.
I am running the latest NEC USB 3 drivers and Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with SP1.
    Thanks,

My USB 3 was so munted with drives dropping in an out on an HP8460p (with Windows 7 older than the PC and never rebuilt). It occurred after plugging in a suspect broken drive some months ago. All the drives would work as USB 2.0.
I had a go at finding all the registry keys but failed. I was beginning to think it was hardware.
I then discovered drivecleanup and devicecleanup ( see http://www.uwe-sieber.de/drivetools_e.html) on a message here http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/usb-drive-or-flash-problems-how-to-cleanup-and-remove-old-u...
    Problem solved.
I used both tools and could not believe how many obsolete hardware devices were there.

    Hi Arsie,
Your IP profile is very low, which is the reason for the slow speeds as Im sure you've guessed.  Have you been restarrting, unplugging or resetting your hub in an effort to get the IP profile to increase?  The IP profile will rise when 3-5 days of a solid connection has been achieved, any disconnections will restart this time scale.
Has your hub been disconnecting at all? And once did it disconnect so low to give you that profile? Unfortunately it takes only 75 minutes for the profile to drop

Hello, very recently (with in the past two days) I have been experiencing some bad latency, or I assume it is what every one is talking about. I have a new Westell router that verizon gave us when we upgraded to high speed pritty recently.  I ran a tracert verizon.com and got the following

I am a novince at best when it comes to this stuff learning as i go but from what i understand this issues ping # 2 is with the router in my immediate area. I noticed it happening over the weekend and before that things were normal. It wasn't till tonight that getting into an online match  on x-box live for Call of Duty became impossible and my internet was running slower than normal. I decided to look into it and I hope you can help me out. I know we have some unusually high winds tonight but I doubt that has anything to do with it. I will continue running tracert and keep you up dated. If it continues i will contact verizon by phone if neccessary.  Thanks.

ok an update from this morning and some aditional info from my router....
the tracert to verizon.com is the same type of speeds as posted above. when i get back to work i will post more about my router spec but i got work now.

  • Two questions concerning Airport Express (speed and disconnecting)

    Hello, thanks for any reply.
    1) I currently have an Airport Express hooked up to a modem. My experience with it is somewhat lackluster however. The speed can fluctuate sometimes, going from decently fast (although I don't think very fast at all) to qute slow. Also, I more often than not have to reboot the Airport Express (by unplugging and replugging in).
What happens is the green light is on, but my wireless signal (top right of MacBook Pro screen) is empty. I click on it and try to find my signal, which is listed. I then click on that, but nothing happens, and it tells me I cannot connect to it. I then have to unplug and then plug in the Airport Express and wait for it to reboot, which solves the problems but is rather annoying. Any help on how to stop this would be great.
    2) I am caught inbetween whether I need to upgrade the Airport Express anyway, into a router with a wired ethernet port. I am utilizing the USB printer and obviously the only port to connect to the modem, but the only way I can hook into my system that does not have wireless capabilities (Xbox 360), I need to unplug the wire from my Airport Express, plug it into my console, and then restart the router, and then do the same thing except with the Airport Express to obtain connection (both are unfortunately mutually exclusive).
The reason I mention that is because I am considering different speed options too. I apologize for my lack of savvy on the subject, but quite simply: Does the Airport Express create the fastest wireless connection out there? Does the Airport Extreme (with wired ports) create a faster connection? When it comes to the Airport Extreme, does that card (I see it in the store section, but I still don't understand it) make the connection much better? Does that card help for an Airport Express?
Thank you so much for answering my questions, I really appreciate it.

Can you further explain the notion of interference, does that mean other wireless signals? I have many that my computer detects, so would this slow down my connection?
Yes any wireless signals at 2.4 GHz will cause interference for the AX. This can be from wireless networks or other devices.
Also, in terms of the 802.11n clients, I know that my computer supports it (From Utilities > Network Utility), but does that mean that the Airport Extreme card is not a factor?
That means that your Mac can connect to 802.11n networks.
Can you please detail what that card functions as.
?? Don't know what you mean by that.
...do you think that the Airport Extreme is then totally worth it, just to clarify.
If you have 802.11n devices and do large transfers between them, then the 802.11b/g/n AEBS could be useful.
If you want to use the AEBS as a file server, then the 802.11b/g/n AEBS would be worth it.

  • Very poor speeds and high error counts?

    Hi guys,
I have been reading through some threads on the forum but still cannot find any information regarding my poor connection. My connection runs extremely slow and eventually leads to me being unable to load webpages.
I had a look through my ADSL settings and found some high CRC and HEC events which I presume are not good! I have copied and pasted the results below.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have had no luck after calling the call centres...

I have just put it into the test socket and the internet does seem much more repsonsive when I go onto websites.
There still seems to be a few errors on the ADSL settings.

  • Very poor speed and the poor customer service is w...

Good News - infinity will be connected to my area by the end of next month
Bad News - My connection speed is now .283Mb instead of the 6-7Mb that it has been until a week ago. So I ring bangalore and get fobbed of over and over again. They then offer me a new hub as my N600 "is not compatible" very funny!! Well the hub never arrives.
I phone the cancellation line which agrees to send out another hub as my cancellation fee is nearly £130, so lets see if this one turns up. I've checked the N600 and filter and all is fine. An external line check is clear so it must be at the exchange.
Therefore if you have had to make room at the exchange to connect up the fibre optic tell me and I'll accept it don't just try and fob me off with rubbish..
    Totally **bleep** off

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router , if netgear enter 192.168.0.1 the router status and then show statistic and run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
if your exchnage is being upgraded to fibre that will not affect your adsl connection
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • BB really slow and disconnection problems. Prepari...

    Hi all
I've been having recent problems with my BB connection which resulted in a visit from an engineer last week. The engineer checked the master box and found no issues. He advised that I replace the cable connecting the hub to the master box as he thought it could be damaged and leading to the problem.
I've replaced the cable and microfilters throughout, reset the hub, moved the hub, tried wired and wireless connection, changed channels but I'm still getting really poor speeds and disconnections and its become totally unusable. I cant obtain a result from the BTspeedtest application as it continually says an error has occurred during the test (when I can get online at all).
If I can get online when I get home I'll post up my exact hub stats. From memory the hub has remained connected for around 50hrs and the speeds are upstream 480kbps downstream 438kbps.
Finally, in readiness for the 2nd engineer on Friday is there anything I should do, for example should I connect the hub to the test port on the master socket?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Ok folks,
after removing the hub from the main BT socket (NTE5?) and connecting the hub directly to the test port I get an immediate improvement in download speeds. Stats below.
What should my next course of action be, does that mean the socket is faulty or is something off somewhere else?
BTspeedtest still shows the following error when I attempt a speedtest
The Performance Tester could not perform Assured Rate throughput test , Please try again later.

  • Re: poor connectivity and speed with new comcast gateway

Welcome to the wonderfulo world of Comcast. I have been paying for the 50Mb service for over two years. It has never exceeded 23Mb in any speed test, but Comcast wants to charge more if I change to the 25Mb tier. Now we get a notice of up to 75Mb and find that the speed tests show no improvement whatsoever. Conversation with two Comcast installers in the past indicate that in my area we will never see anything above 25Mb. As for the gateway, in two years I have changed the hardware three times and it has made no difference. There is frequent loss of WiFi connection and poor speed whether WiFo or ethernet cable connection is used. Unfortunately, there are few options to address the situation. One is to purchase your own cable compatible modem (Comcast has a list of the ones they say will work) and fight with the company to get the service bill adjusted to reflect the nonuse of their equipment. The other option (short of waiting for Google fiber to go active) is to join the masses that are filing complaints with the FCC, forcing Comcast to address a variety of problems.

It's not normal to get less than advetised speeds. Generally you should be seeing speeds slightly faster than advertised. Any tech that told you Comcast's sytem was not capable of more than 25MBps was not knowledgable.

  • High latency and poor speed tests lately

For the past 4-5 days, I've been working with various Verizon techs to resolve a high latency/slow Internet problem.  Their ultimate solution was that they have no idea why it's doing this, and since I can reach a few websites at full speed and their line tests show I'm operating at full provisioning, it's not their problem.  "We can't control traffic outside of our networks."  Well, my results are also showing problems with the Verizon servers, so I would think they should be more concerned.  Most websites, however, exhibit the problem.  So I'm stuck, looking for a better answer than "go away."  Maybe some of you are experiencing a similar problem with latency or sporadic speeds?
My provisioning is 20M/5M.  I'm in the L.A. area. (In the traceroutes below, I masked Hop 2 for privacy.)
I've experienced this problem with 2 computers (1 desktop, 1 laptop), both using Ethernet ports; one test using wireless on the laptop.  I've plugged the router directly into the ONT coax to eliminate my house wiring as the culprit.  Westell 9100EM router.
A few websites seem okay, and speedtest.net results always show provisioning at full speed to the L.A. server, but the problem persists when using the non-L.A. server.  With speakeasy.net, even the L.A. server exhibits the problem.  The latency gets worse as the night goes on, sometimes over 1000ms for some traceroute hops.  In the morning, it seems to be back to normal.
    Thanks for any help....

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

MisterJefferson, your problem looks to be with hop #3. That is a Verizon router just after the gateway router for you. This will need to be addressed by a Verizon Network technician. Your hops to your router and your hop to the gateway look fine. Verizon will need to reboot that second router or re-route your hops.
Chernabog, yours is more difficult, you dont have any obvious big issue. However you do have a moderate jump at hop number 8. this is off the verizon network and is out on the internet. on one of the ATT routers. Unlikely you are going to be able to do anything about this. And as it is off the Verizon network, there would be nothing verizon could do about it either. Usually though, if it is a router needing rebooting, it will generally self correct after a few days. Or you could be unlucky enough to be going through a system that is overloaded or just plain old. This can be frustraiting. I myself play a lot of online games and if the server is in Washington DC (I'm in California) one of the hops I have to go through is in kentucky with sprintlink and their routers constantly give me a 500ms ping and I havent been able to get it corrected in over 4 years. Something we sometimes have to live with when it is out of our control.

Checked my Time Warner Road Runner Down & Up speed and performing fine. Fire Fox is hanging, disconnecting, slow, etc... What to do ?

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Then Apply. For 10.5/10.6 Network, highlight Interface>Advanced button>DNS tab>little + icon.
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.
    For 10.5/10.6 Network, highlight Interface>Advanced button>DNS tab>little + icon.

  • Poor broadband speed and hub lockups

I've been with BT for donkeys years and need a reliable system for lots of business reasons.
When I first got a wireless hub, the old white version, I was plagued with poor reliability. Usually after a particularly sticky period the hub just locked up and needed its power lead unplugging and replugging to get it going again.
As most people discover, Indian call centres are just a waste of time.
One day it got really bad and I found I couldn't even use my telephone.
Nothing but fizzing and crackling. I found a special number (17070) that you can ring and this gives you a line test facility.
    Clearly my line was bad.
After a phone call to BT I was warned that if indeed my line did not turn out to be bad I would be charged a HUGE amount and I really shouldn't persue the matter.
Having been in Defence Communications since 1965 I decided to back my own diagnosis and to carry on and request an engineer to pay me a visit and hopefully diagnose a bad line.
A chap turned up the next day with a trainee in tow.
Within 30 seconds he'd spotted the problem.
Many years ago during a period of copper shortages, BT had used different types of wire. Unfortunately when you connect two different metals together and add moisture you have a battery. Metal is transferred from one wire to the other and you get oxidisation. The copper wire was just twisted with an aluminium wire and had been oxidising ever since it had rained after it was was fitted...
Down came a length of cable between the anchor point on my garage roof and the house and up went a new length of copper wire. Next a new junction box with an integral filter was fitted... all this done by the trainee (his first day with BT) and since then my broadband has been faultless. The speed which was usually around 1.5M is now 5.2M.
I suspect the main problem that resulted from the noise due to the oxidised junction was in the hub firmware.
Eventually a particular random set of crackles put the hum firmware into an odd state from which it could not recover.
Resetting by interrupting the power returned the firmware into a working state, until the next lockup crackle code.
    Hope this helps someone

    Hi Repairman
Well you were nearly right .....
Adaptive adsl uses a line algorithm to determine line speed and profile, which is run constantly at the dslam in the exchange.
Any crackles and pops or other line noise will cause the line speed to reduce in both throughput and IP profile, because it sees instability in the connection, due to the noise.
Once the noise is corrected, the dslam picks up the throughput and profile automatically, after a period of time has elapsed and noise levels are back to normal.
The only role the router plays is in "trying to negotiate" the best possible line speed for the line condition.
But thanks for the post, and sharing your experiences!
