Poor to Nill Signal in Home

My basic phone is practically useless inside my home. What options are there besides going outside to make and answer phone calls?

Purchase a network extender and connect it to your broadband Internet connection.
Install a landline phone line.

  • Adding tones to signal my home answering machine

I have my home number programmed on my iPhone with a comma (pause) and *1234 (a star and four numbers). This sends a code to my answering machine to retrieve my messages from outside. This has worked for years. This has worked on my previous iPhone flawlessly and automatically.
Last Friday I got a 3G new iPhone and never once have I been able to use that preprogrammed number successfully. I hear the machine answer after it is dialed and I do not hear the extra beeps going in to signal it.
After reading two threads on this board about this issue that people are having I performed my own experiment. I know it worked fine on my 2G phone. I turned off 3G. It worked. First time. I heard the beeps and my machine heard the beeps and I could control the machine remotely.
Perhaps 3G does not recognize the * ? Perhaps the duplexing is such that when the machine is 'talking' it doesn't hear the beeps being sent? Whatever it might be it is important for people to know I had success going back to 2G.
Oh if only att would return us all the extra $10 for this month the way Apple is giving 30 free days for the MobileMe rocky start!

This is a serious issue. I can't get my iPhone 3g to signal my home answering machine either with EDGE. I don't understand this. Please help!

  • HT1515 I'm getting poor performance from my apple TV, will plugging in my airport express via ethernet to apple tv increase its performance (poor wi-fi signal)

I'm getting poor performance from my apple TV, will plugging in my airport express via ethernet to apple tv increase its performance (poor wi-fi signal)

Yes, though it is less ideal than what I suggested earlier. You would need to place your AirPort Express in a location approximately midway between your AirPort Extreme Base Station and the TV. Then, using AirPort Utility, configure it to "extend a wireless network".
It may help. Bear in mind the signal thus "extended" by the Express can only be as good as the signal it can receive from the Extreme. That is the reason for selecting its appoximate midway location.
    Read about it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145
Scroll down to "Wirelessly Extended Network (802.11n)" for a picture.
This solution requires an all-Apple wireless network. No third party stuff.
You mentioned using Ethernet. That would be a better idea. Scroll down to "Roaming Network (Ethernet-connected Wi-Fi base stations)" for a picture. In your case, the longer the Ethernet cable - hence the closer you can move the Express to the TV - the better

  • Signal Booster Options for poor service signal in home

The new home I am moving to gets really poor signal (seems to be just in the yard and house ~3 acres) everywhere around home gets signal. What would be a good signal booster option so I can get calls in my home? Zipcode 56759

At this moment, I believe your only option is the network extender, which is currently a Samsung model. You would hook this up to your home internet connection. Limitations are it is only 3G and not LTE.
Future, Verizon has said they will be releasing an LTE network extender. Also Verizon announced in the fall of 2014 they will support wifi calling with supported phones sometime in 2015. Both are still not concrete on dates, so I would not count on them right now. Just be aware that if you get the 3G network extender, it will be obsolete in less than a year.

  • Very poor signal at home

Is there anything that can be done to in prove my signal. At my house I get maybe two bars on 3g, inside one if I'm lucky. But at my mailbox I get almost five bar on 4g. It's only a half mile in distance. I really need better signal as my phone is the only Internet option that is available.

Pricey but we've installed one of these and it worked great, the only one that plays nicely with Verizons network.  The downside is you need a highspeed internet connection, but we went from a bar or two, to 5 full bars.

  • Iphone 5s poor reception of signal

I am facing a lot of issue with connectivity of my iphone 5s.. I still use my 4s and when both phones are placed side by side.. the 4s has complete dots(signals) where as the 5s does show only 1 or 2 dots.. I have taken 5s to apple service center and got it replaced..so I have my new 5s now.. but again its the same problem.. very poor signals and dropped calls..i am using the most updated version of software 8.1 and also I am not using any case.
I have taken a new sim from my service provider just to rule out any issue with sim.. but still its same.. my battery is just draining and when checked the "battery usage" phone -low signal shows like 20%..
I am thinking to move back to android... as all other users in my home does not have any connectivity issues and its from the same service provider...
Any suggestions help is greatly appreciated.

  • Poor (or no) signal on Orange UK

OK, I've had my 3GS for 2 days now and am seriously thinking of sending it back unless I can find a solution to my signal strength problem.
In my house, I am getting 0 or 1 bar signal in about 10% of the building. Most of the time I just get 'no service'.
Sometimes I get 2 bars, and if I stand in the one spot, the signal gradually disappears going form 2 to 1 to 0 to 'no service' then after a while, it might come back.
I also have a 'nornal' GSM Orange Samsung (my son's phone) and get between 2 and 5 bars throughout the house.
Could I have a faulty phone?
    Is this a common problem?
Would an external aerial/repeater solve this?
    Thanks.

Welcome Orange customers to the age old problem of reception issues with the iPhone. We have had the same problem on O2 and, it seems on AT&T in the USA. I'm on my second iPhone, recently upgrading from the 2nd Generation model to the 3Gs, hoping the new model would be better as far as signal is concerned- it isn't. I was about to switch to Orange, but I see the problem is there too- poor signal, drop outs, the odd cut off. It seems to be an Apple issue.
I still have the old iPhone for now, so I'm taking both off to a nearby Apple store to have them tested. This might show an issue with the particular phones I have (a coincidence if it is), but it might show a larger, more concerning issue.
If one must have an iPhone, then there would seem to be a need to install a signal booster at your home/work in order to get the thing to work properly. Not really what this is all about though, is it?

  • Note 3 poor reception, no signal, dropped calls. other phones have no problem. have reset it, pulled battery, support has reset towers etc. still having issues.

note 3 poor reception, dropped calls, no signal, 3g not 4g. out of service area message at home this is crazy. other phones have no problem,

Wow! That's quite the large area, Nicki05. The service along Interstate 65 is pretty strong in general. Do you use any type of case on your phone? Has your phone been replaced through your warranty when you gave our Tech Support a call?

  • Repeated lost of AirPort Express signal on home network w/ Mac and Dell PC

After a year of steady, reliable home wireless network access with an AirPort Extreme base station and an Express relay in the upstairs, I am suddenly, repeatedly losing signal strength from the Express relay. The Express goes into a flashing amber status when the problem occurs. To solve the issue, I have successfully been able to restart the Express, which works for 12 to 36 hours before the situation happens again. What could have happened to cause this sudden recurring problem and what can be done to resolve it longer term?

Hello kkinva. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference that has been introduced recently in the immediate area that is preventing you from getting a good clean signal between the base stations.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like MacStumbler or iStumbler to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

  • \poor Wi Fi signal - Thick Walls

I live in an old house with very thick walls. Consequently the wi fi signal is very poor from room to room. For my PC I have a Belkin product which sends the wi fi signal through our electric wiring system. Is there something similar that I could connect my ipad to.

How does wifi use the wires? I think you need to better describe your setup. Wifi means "wireless" so if you have something that is using your electrical system wires I think it is a wired ethernet system using your wires, not wifi.
So if you have a wifi device connected to a wired ethernet over your electrical system and you computer connects to the device using wifi, your ipad should be able to connect using wifi to the same device.
It would help if you told us the model of the device. "...a Belkin product..." is not enough information for us to know how your network is setup.

  • No AT&T Signal at Home

I purchased my iPhone three months ago as a replacement for my Treo 650. That meant switching to AT&T after 20+ years with Verizon or its predecessors. The device is primarily for my business, but I use it also for personal email and a little web-browsing.
I also work at home, in the middle of Irvine, CA USA, a city of 180,000 people in the middle of Orange County, just south of LA, and an urban area of perhaps 2.5 million people.
AT&T has admitted I get essentially no iPhone cell service at my home. Sitting next to my kitchen window there is repeatedly "NO SERVICE." I can walk outside and down the street, and still "NO SERVICE." My complaint to the PUC here in California resulted in AT&T confirming that there is no service, and AT&T even offered to let me out of my contract. That would of course render the iPhone useless.
In my initial complaint, I asked the PUC to order AT&T to uncouple me and release the iPhone so I could sign up for a different GSM service -- say, T-Mobile. The PUC refused. The PUC also said it had no jurisdiction over my complaint about the linkage between Apple and AT&T, that I should go to the civil courts.
AT&T also lied to the PUC about my situation, claiming among other things that I had a basement in my home which caused the NO SERVICE condition. Obviously, I have no basement.
The iPhone is a safety device at my home because if there is a power outage (which there was some weeks ago), my POTS service with Cox is VOIP so I lose that service. In the episode, I literally had to drive nearly a half mile to another location to make a cell phone call.
The iPhone is basically a good machine, even "cool," but the tie-in between Apple and AT&T is a disaster. I'm not sure what to do at this point, and I may just sue in small claims court to get half or so of my monthly fee returned.
    Any suggestions would be welcome.

Dave, I agree with you completely.
I was living smack-dab in the middle of San Francisco when I first bought my iPhone and the reception was so-so in my house. I'd have to lean out the front window sometimes, but other times it was ok. The reception bars would often fluctuate between five and one while I was standing in the same spot.
Reception only seemed to get worse as time went by. I get dropped calls and the all-too-familiar "Failed Call" message with the two beeps all day long.
I have a friend who lives in a residential neighborhood of San Francisco, who has been looking with a few of his neighbors into buying some sort of "signal booster" so they can make and receive calls from their homes. AT&T has been no help at all.
I moved to Berkeley last month, again not exactly out in the middle of nowhere, and get practically no reception in my house. Sometimes, if I'm lucky, I can make a call standing next to my bedroom window.
Contrast this with my previous provider, T-Mobile, where I had maybe two dropped calls a year. Now I have the dubious "pleasure" of paying almost twice as much for lousy reception, ignorant customer service and I'm locked into a two-year contract. Paying the extra money would be worth the convenience of the iPhone if the service was halfway decent.
I don't have a land line and have no idea what I'd do if there was an emergency.

  • Weak signal at home

Short of spending more money on top of the cost of my phone for a booster/repeater/whatever, is there anything I can do to improve the weak signal I have at home?  The levels go anywhere from -106 (no bars) at worst up to -93 (2 bars) at best.  Is there anything I can do to the phone to help it pull a stronger signal?  The signal is weakest by our computer, which is exactly where I prefer to use the phone.

    Hi suzigirl,
I understand your discontent and frustration regarding the issues with your wireless service in your house. As per your post, you want to know of a way to improve your wireless signal indoors besides the Network Extender option. Lamentably we cannot guarantee wireless service indoors due to different building structural materials that interfere with wireless signal and the only option we are able to provide to improve indoor service is the Network Extender.

  • Poor cell phone signal

Is there a cell phone booster for an area with a poor signal.  An external dish, antenna?

Thanks Lawrence.  We use CommonTime mSuite to integrate our Lotus Notes with iPhone's Calendar, Contacts and email using the Exchange iPhone connector, and I am one of the administrators for mSuite.  I have deleted and re-added the Exchange account on my 5s running IOS 8 multiple times, and have done the same on an iPad Gen 3 and an iPad Mini.  All with the same results.  (The results are that email comes down, but calendar and contacts do not, and email will reload every so often.)  I've deleted the account on the mNotes server a couple of times as well, to no avail.  I have an old iPhone 4 still running IOS 7.1.2, and setting the exchange account up on it, immediately everything came down successfully from Lotus Notes onto the old iPhone.  This is definitely an IOS 8/CommonTime issue, and CommonTime has acknowledged that there is a problem, though they have as yet no fix.  The one good thing to come of this is I now know what was killing my battery. After 7 hours of use last night (regular use on Facebook and Feedly) my battery had only gone down to 83%. Other of our 46 users who have upgraded to IOS 8 have the same problem as I.

  • How can I improve my cellphone signal at home?

Across the street it's great signal strength but my side of the street is heavily wooded and 1 bar is lucky. I can never use the phone held to my head I always have to put it on speaker and I literally know where to stand so the call isn't dropped. There has to be some way to get better coverage on my property without standing at the mailbox. Is there an app or way I can hand the call off to VOIP on my ISP wireless? It's bad enough I am considering stepping back in time and getting an actual land line phone again.

clay282 Wesurely don't want you to have to stand at the mailbox in order to make a phone call. We do sell a network extender that works along with your highspeed or satellite internet service to boost call quality indoors. Before we provide you with a network extender, a network ticket needs to be filed with our technical support team. Have you had a ticket filed, yet? Check out more details about the extender: http://vz.to/IHRT6h
