Poor wifi connectivity

Why does my laptop keep streaming bbciplayer yet my iPad regularly loses connectivity over BT infinity wireless?
I have used the airplane mode and reverted hoping the connection would remain stable but it doesn't help.  This happens every few weeks and lasts for a week at a time. Is there anyone else out there suffering the same problem?
I thought it might be a BT issue but when my laptop streamed solidly for over an hour, I couldn't argue the case. Is this an apple issue?

Hi Ayling001,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your Wi-Fi connection on your iPad.
The article below explains the basic troubleshooting steps for this issue:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
Basic troubleshooting
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and then on again.
Verify that you are in range of your Wi-Fi router or base station.
Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and Cable/DSL modem are connected to power and turned on.
Check whether other devices (portable computers, for example) are able to connect to the Wi-Fi network and access the Internet.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware. For AirPort Base Stations, refer to this article for information about firmware updates. For third-party Wi-Fi routers, check the manufacturer's website for details on updating your firmware.
Restart your iOS deviceHold the On/Off button until "slide to power off" appears. Slide to power off your device. When it is off, press the On/Off button to turn it back on.
If you are still experiencing a Wi-Fi issue after trying the above, choose the symptom below that closely matches your issue:
After joining a Wi-Fi network, you notice the signal strength is weak or fluctuates
Try moving closer to the Wi-Fi router or base station to see if the Wi-Fi signal improves.
Check for sources of potential interference.
Remove your iOS device from any case, stand, or other attachment to see if the Wi-Fi signal improves.
Open Safari and try to load a webpage to see if the Wi-Fi signal improves.
If you are using a Wi-Fi router at home, refer to your user manual/documentation to assist you with some of these suggestions.
Check the manufacturer's website for firmware or software updates for your Wi-Fi router.
Check the wireless security option of your Wi-Fi router:
If you are using WEP security and have multiple WEP keys on your Wi-Fi router, try configuring your Wi-Fi router to use only a single WEP key in key index 1.
Consider using WPA or WPA2 instead. WPA and WPA2 encryption protocols are newer, more effective security options for wireless networks than the older WEP protocol.
Temporarily disable wireless encryption or security on the Wi-Fi router to rule out encryption issues.
Disable 40MHz in the 2.4GHz settings on the Wi-Fi router. Mac computers, iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch do not support this mode. Disabling it may reduce interference issues.
Supported Wi-Fi networks vary by iPhone, iPad, iPod touch model (Example: Does my device support 802.11n?). Refer to Tech Specs for detailed information on which standards your device supports.
Find additional information on configuring your Wi-Fi router for use with iOS devices.
If the steps above do not improve the connectivity, these specific router settings may help:
iOS and OS X: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
I hope this information helps ....
Have a great day!
- Judy

  • Poor wifi connection on ipad 2

Hi all, I head my ipad 2 for around 15 months. I only started having this problem around 3 months ago but it's really starting to get annoying now.
When I take the ipad up to bed the signal is none existant. My bedroom is above and across a room from the router. Nothing changed to make the signal start playing up, it just seemed to happen one day!
    Here are my router details
    System Details
    Manufacturer     Sagemcom
    Model Number     F@ST2504n
    Firmware Version     6.14.2a4N_UNI
    ADSL Firmware Version     A2pD035g.d23j1
    Any ideas please folks?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Poor WiFi connection with iPhone 4 (iOS 4.2)

    Hello,
I am regularly testing my internet download speed on my iPhone using Ookla's app 'Speed Test'. It used to be up to 8-17 Mbps. But since a few months it only runs on about 1-2 Mbps!?
I did not change my provider nor did my provider decrease the rate. The rate tested from my MacBook Pro is 32 Mbps.
Since I use a MacBook Pro (10/2008), another MacBook Pro (8/2006), an Apple TV and an iPhone 4 I have to set my AirPort Extreme to 802.11n (b/g compatible). I set teh channel manually to 12 since the Apple TV could not deal with automatic channel selection?! The Apple TV's connection speed is also very poor.
So does anyone have tips how I can improve the WiFi connection speed for my iPhone and Apple TV?
    Thanks & best regards,
    Manfred

  • Yoga 2 11 Poor Wifi connection and slow.

My Yoga 2 11 is getting worse wifi speeds than my GS3 smartphone, I have already tried updating the drivers. I have installed all the drivers that came in the sub-partition of my laptop and also went to the lenovo website and got the latest WLAN and LAN drivers. At home my wired speed is 6Mbps while when the laptop is right next to my router and at full bars at best it gives me 1Mbps internet connection. One or two bars less and I get dropped to .5Mbps speeds. Please advise.

Maybe the wifi antenna cables are damaged? You'd need to take it apart to see if it is.

  • MacBook Air 2012 - poor WiFi connectivity

Just submitted this to Apple feedback, I know they won't respond and I know others have opened discussions on this topic already but I want to splurb...
    MacBook Air 2.0Ghz, 8GB 1600Mhz, 256GB
    AirPort Extreme (4th gen) 5Ghz 802.11N
Network connectivity is hit and miss. I can start up and the MacBook connects to the Extreme ok. I can start up and connection fails (referring to time outs). I can be connected for hours and then the local wireless connection to the router drops and is unable to connect again.  Rebooting may or may not correct this.
Will a driver revision be written and pushed out? Or is this hardware faulty? Would be grateful if you could let me know.

Yeah I was thinking of doing that if an update is not released shortly that fixes it. I had similar teething issues with the wireless on a black MacBook I owned a few years ago which was fixed with an OS X update. if not and it drags on, I'll see if they can offer a swap.

  • I tried to download yosemite but the download failed because of poor wifi connections and I tried again but I did not have enough disk space how do I get the space back from the failed download?

The failed download of Yosemite used up disk space and I can't find away to delete that because it is taking up 4 GB of space that I need to download Yosemite.

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
    Application Compatibility
    Applications Compatibility (2)
    Do a backup before installing.
If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again.  You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program.

  • Poor WiFi performance of Yoga 2 11?

I have just purchased a Yoga 2 11 and find that connectivity is poor (zero to two bars) and unreliable (occasionally reverting to a yellow exclamation point)  in my favorite thinking chair. I get reasonable performance at the same location from other machines including a T420, a Nexus 7, and an IPad. After reviewing some community forum fixes for the presumably Yoga 2 Pro, I have checked to ensure that I have the most recent driver; that I have turned off bluetooth; that I am not using protected sharing; that windows is not managing the wifi Plus I have installed on the order of 33 windows updates (a pretty large number considering this is right out of the box on the first day of availability!). Am I missing anything or is this a problem related to something unfixable like the antenna design? Other potentially connected diagnostic information is that some sites e.g. zillo do not load quickly behave very smoothly, even in locations with more than one "bar" of wifi connectivity. Thank in advance for any input.

I see the same poor wifi connection when comparing to my old laptop and to my Galaxy S4.  I updated the driver but it did not help (think it was the same one).  I have a week left for no hassle returns and if this cannot get resolved I think this unit has to go back.

  • Mac Mini 2012 Poor Wifi

    Hi All,
I've had my 2012 Mac Mini (the basis of my home music recording setup) about 9-10 months and always had poor wifi connection. Download speeds are terrible and it can take hours to download a few MBs
My provider is Sky Fibre Broadband with the Sky Hub. It's all less than 12 months old. It doesn't seem to have the 5ghz option that's been mentioned.
Another point to note is that the signal isn't trying to penetrate several thick walls, the Sky hub is in the next room less than 10 metres away with a direct line of sight through 2 doorways.
I've been through everything in this thread Intermittent and slow Wi-Fi connection on Mac Mini Solved! to no avail. I've tried turning off monitors, speakers, hard drives, bluetooth (even though I need to use this to connect my iPad for studio use). It's completely unusable. I even have the sky booster for the wifi sat  next to the Mac and it makes no difference. My Mac Mini is updated to latest OS X Mavericks which took a very long time to download!
The only thing left for me to try is running a long ethernet cable from the sky hub to see how it is wired. This I am going to do today when I'be been to buy a cable as it's not convenient and unworkable to strip down my home studio to move it to another room.
Yesterday I spent a long time on the phone to apple support and they seem to think there's a problem with my home network and interferance. We went through all sorts, deleting startups items, caches and so on
Although every other device in my home works absolutely fine. These include Windows 8 laptop, Google Nexus, LG G2 Android Phone, iPhone 4s, 2x iPod 4th Gen, Xbox 360, PS3, LG Smart TV, iPad Air. Note these aren't all on at the same time!
It did connect using the iPhone 4s as a hotspot to test which is why Apple insist there is no problem with the hardware, although the WiFi doesn't pick up any other local networks available for example my neighbours of which there are around 8 I can see on other devices.
    Any thoughts?
Out of interest does anyone think getting an Apple Airport Express, connecting it to the Sky Hub but connecting my Mac to Airport rather than the Sky Hub directly would work? In effect creating an isolated connection from the other devices in the house? Maybe they will take to each other in a nicer way. I'm a bit confused by what I can do with the Airport and want to afford splashing out on different routers etc. Trying to get them to work on Sky I can just feel the headache!
Thanks in advance, hope the above is enough info

If you ALT+Click on the Mini WiFi icon in the menu bar, you should see a 'Open Wireless diagnostics'. If you click on it and press command+2, it will bring up a utilities window.
There are two functions that you should consider. Wi-Fi Scan and Performance. There is also Logging, Frame Capture and Info. You can look at these and analyze what may be issues with your Mini.

  • Extremely Poor WIFI. Now have Bluetooth issues.

I have been having an extremely poor WIFI connection. I recently upgraded to 10.4.6 and noticed this problem. Is there something wrong with 10.4.6 that would cause this or is it an internal problem with my PowerBook? Also is there anyway to check the AirPort card on my laptop?
Well I am editing this to add another issue, i just noticed that my blue tooth just went unavailable. My bluetooth icon in the menu bar has a squigle through it. When I click on it it says that it is not available.
    Thanks in advance.

As far as the wifi connection, powerbooks are notorious for poor reception. I haven't heard of 10.4.6 causing any new issues, but people have been complaining about the powerbooks' reception for a long time. iBooks and most pc laptops get better reception. In newer aluminum models, you can't check the airport card. It's inside the unit. In 1.25 aluminum powerbooks, I know you could access the airport card through the battery bay.
For your bluetooth issue, I'd recommend restarting first of all. If that doesn't help, I'd reset your power management unit. You can find directions for your particular model here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
If that doesn't help, I'd boot from your software disc and run disk utility.
Let us know if that does any good.

  • Poor battery life and WiFi connectivity on iPhone 5s

I have bought a new iPhone 5s 16GB running iOS 8.1.2 3 days ago. The device that I have got has a poor battery life and WiFi connectivity. I have tried lots of methods given on the internet like turned off the auto-brightness, reset the phone to default settings.
Then contacted the Apple Care for battery issue. They asked for the diagnostics to check the problem. They said its happening because of the crash of inbuilt app Springboard asked me to try "Set up as new iPhone". Even after doing all these, I am still getting battery not more than 4 hours.
This is not expected from Apple. Such an awful experience on my first iPhone buying.

  • My apple new apple ipad wifi connectivity is poor

hi presently iam using latest ipad. i observed its wifi connectivity is poor. when try to connect ipad via wifi it is taking lot of time some times not getting coneect if the signal is poor, while my laptop, my phone and my ipod were connecting very fast. is their any solution.

If your router is dual-band, try ensuring that the SSID is different for the 5GHz band from the 2.4GHz one.
If sounds like your other devices which have no issue would all be 2.4GHz only.
If this is the case, try updating your router firmware - latest can firmware can make it easier for dual-band devices to connect firmly to the router without 'hunting' between signals of similar strength from the two bands from the same router.
