Poor WIFI on my 24"iMac

Hi, wifi on my iMac is terrible.
Basically it works on and off and often at very low speed.
While the iMac is not working I have no problem connecting with my PC and iPhone.
The wifi station is close by the iMac and there is a good connection.
I have tried changing the security settings on the wifi.
I have installed latest updates for my iMac.
If I use LAN the iMac has no problems.
It is not an option to go back to previous versions of Mac OS (which I have seen suggested in some posts here)
I notice that quite a few people is struggling with similar problems, but have no really been able to find a good solution to the problem.
Any suggestions (in a language that a non-IT person understands ;)?
Thanks
Kris

I have struggled for months with a pitiful wireless connection with my iMac 24". A combination of upgrading to a new DSL modem/router and installing snow leopard had made my internet connection absolutely terrible, very slow and with very frequent losses of connectivity.
I tried every suggestion I found on this forum, from the latest software downloads to changing all possible settings in the airport preferences. I also moved the computer closer to the router but nothing changed. The other mac in the house connected to the router via ethernet, instead, was working fine.
Finally, yesterday I bought a Netgear 85 Mbps Powerline Network Adapter Kit and, with my computer connected via ethernet, everything works like a charm.
This kit comes with 2 adapters: you plug one in the router and the other in a electrical plug near your computer and connect the two via ethernet. It costs about $90 but it is sooooo worthed.
The only thing you have to make sure is that the 2 outlets are electrically connected.
It is too bad that Apple's wifi technology is way, way below the otherwise high standard typical of their products.
I hope this helps.
Good luck!

  • Poor WiFi performance of Yoga 2 11?

I have just purchased a Yoga 2 11 and find that connectivity is poor (zero to two bars) and unreliable (occasionally reverting to a yellow exclamation point)  in my favorite thinking chair. I get reasonable performance at the same location from other machines including a T420, a Nexus 7, and an IPad. After reviewing some community forum fixes for the presumably Yoga 2 Pro, I have checked to ensure that I have the most recent driver; that I have turned off bluetooth; that I am not using protected sharing; that windows is not managing the wifi Plus I have installed on the order of 33 windows updates (a pretty large number considering this is right out of the box on the first day of availability!). Am I missing anything or is this a problem related to something unfixable like the antenna design? Other potentially connected diagnostic information is that some sites e.g. zillo do not load quickly behave very smoothly, even in locations with more than one "bar" of wifi connectivity. Thank in advance for any input.

I see the same poor wifi connection when comparing to my old laptop and to my Galaxy S4.  I updated the driver but it did not help (think it was the same one).  I have a week left for no hassle returns and if this cannot get resolved I think this unit has to go back.

  • Mac Mini 2012 Poor Wifi

    Hi All,
I've had my 2012 Mac Mini (the basis of my home music recording setup) about 9-10 months and always had poor wifi connection. Download speeds are terrible and it can take hours to download a few MBs
My provider is Sky Fibre Broadband with the Sky Hub. It's all less than 12 months old. It doesn't seem to have the 5ghz option that's been mentioned.
Another point to note is that the signal isn't trying to penetrate several thick walls, the Sky hub is in the next room less than 10 metres away with a direct line of sight through 2 doorways.
I've been through everything in this thread Intermittent and slow Wi-Fi connection on Mac Mini Solved! to no avail. I've tried turning off monitors, speakers, hard drives, bluetooth (even though I need to use this to connect my iPad for studio use). It's completely unusable. I even have the sky booster for the wifi sat  next to the Mac and it makes no difference. My Mac Mini is updated to latest OS X Mavericks which took a very long time to download!
The only thing left for me to try is running a long ethernet cable from the sky hub to see how it is wired. This I am going to do today when I'be been to buy a cable as it's not convenient and unworkable to strip down my home studio to move it to another room.
Yesterday I spent a long time on the phone to apple support and they seem to think there's a problem with my home network and interferance. We went through all sorts, deleting startups items, caches and so on
Although every other device in my home works absolutely fine. These include Windows 8 laptop, Google Nexus, LG G2 Android Phone, iPhone 4s, 2x iPod 4th Gen, Xbox 360, PS3, LG Smart TV, iPad Air. Note these aren't all on at the same time!
It did connect using the iPhone 4s as a hotspot to test which is why Apple insist there is no problem with the hardware, although the WiFi doesn't pick up any other local networks available for example my neighbours of which there are around 8 I can see on other devices.
    Any thoughts?
Out of interest does anyone think getting an Apple Airport Express, connecting it to the Sky Hub but connecting my Mac to Airport rather than the Sky Hub directly would work? In effect creating an isolated connection from the other devices in the house? Maybe they will take to each other in a nicer way. I'm a bit confused by what I can do with the Airport and want to afford splashing out on different routers etc. Trying to get them to work on Sky I can just feel the headache!
Thanks in advance, hope the above is enough info

If you ALT+Click on the Mini WiFi icon in the menu bar, you should see a 'Open Wireless diagnostics'. If you click on it and press command+2, it will bring up a utilities window.
There are two functions that you should consider. Wi-Fi Scan and Performance. There is also Logging, Frame Capture and Info. You can look at these and analyze what may be issues with your Mini.

  • I have recently upgraded my ipad mini to iOS 6.0.2 and still have poor wifi performance. My 3rd generation ipad works great on the same network. I have done all the resets I can think of but nothing helps. I would not have purchased the mini had I known.

On the same wifi network, third generation ipad, iphone4s and MacBook Pro work just fine.  The ipad mini often can not connect with the mail server and seems to hang a long time trying to open a web page. Had I known the mini had this kind of difficulty on wifi, I would have reconsidered my purchase. I have tried resetting the network and renewing the lease on the mini in addition. To completing the most current iOS upgrade. Still poor wifi performance. Unacceptable, in my opinion.

Yes I tried this manyfold. But did not work.  Reading on, I took Tesserac's advice. Shut down router and computer.
Start router after 15 minutes and wait another 10 minutes before starting the computer.
Et voila.... everything is back in working order,

  • Yoga 13 Extremely Poor Wifi Speeds

I currently have the most recent driver installed(1.04.0213) and all other current W8 updates are installed, but I am still experiencing poor WiFi performance. I have also changed the wireless adapter setting power saving mode to Maximum Performance for both the "On battery" and "Plugged in" options in Windows 8's advanced power options menu.
I also have the following options set on the advanced tab for the Realtek WLAN card:
    Antenna Diversity Type: 1
    Bandwidth: 20_40Mhz
    Selective Suspend: Disabled
    Selective Suspend Timeout: 60
    WiFi Config: Performance
After the most recent driver update, my connectivity issues were resolved, but my speed issues were not. My current set up is as follows:
    PC: Lenovo Yoga 13 w/Realtek RTL8732A Wireless LAN 802.11n
Router: RT-N56U IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n,  IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab (Firmware is up to date)
I rarely am able to exceed 10 Mbps and am lucky to average between 1-2 Mbps. I currently pay for Frontier Fios Internet rated at 35 Mbps down and 15 Mbps up. Websites take a ridiculous amount of time to load and YouTube videos can't be played without constant buffering.
Every other device that I have connected to my router, whether they are hard wired or wireless, is able to maintain 30-35 Mbps, even at peak usage times. I currently have a MacBook Pro, an iPad 3, HTC One(M7), Iphone 5, Asus Essentio, and an Asus X54C laptop that are all operating as expected on my network.
I know similar threads exist on the message boards for the Yoga 13, but none of the "Solutions" address this issue. Please address this issue and post a solution that is a permanent fix for this laptop! It has the potential to be an amazing device, but the WiFi issues are keeping it from reaching its true potential!

  • Is there a device I can purchase to enable wifi on my old iMac, like something that plugs into the ethernet port?

Is there a device I can purchase to enable wifi on my old iMac, like something that plugs into the ethernet port?

Yes! There are lots of wifi adapters that will work with OS 9 on old iMacs. You can find a comprehensive list of them here:
    http://lowendmac.com/macdan/md09/mac-os-9-wifi.html
Belkin seems to make a lot of wireless products for OS 9, so that would probably be the name to keep in mind. You can see one of these here:
    http://cache-www.belkin.com/support/dl/belkin_wireless_usb_network_adapter_manua l_os9.pdf
If you're using an iMac G3, I think those are compatible with AirPort cards, so that's an option too. Good luck!

  • Poor wifi signal

My New Macbook air has very poor wifi signal, I have to sit within feet of my router to have a usable connection, I cannot even use it in the next room.
Does anybody else have this problem, and would purchasing a antenna booster or signal repeater do the job?

For the Internet, you should set up a router on your modem, this router will route the packets to any device on the local area network.
If you use the iMac as a router, like if you connect the Ethernet cable from your modem to the iMac, then broadcast a Wifi signal, the iMac will have to remain on all the time, at full power. Thus drastically shortening it's lifespand.
A router is only about $100 or so, offers much better security as it's like a large guard, someone has to hack through router first to get your iMac or other devices.
If it breaks, you buy another 5 years later for another $100, so your not placing all that always on wear and tear on your expensive iMac.
Apple's airport routers are pretty good, easy to set up and have automatic firmware updates, plus music sharing etc.
Set up properly you will be very secure

  • Poor WiFi on 3GS 5.1.1

Since updating my sons 3GS to 5.1.1 he has been complaining about poor wifi. In fact with A BT Homehub 3, Airport Extreme & a couple of Airport Expresses he has trouble seeing any if these to connect to. I have a Macbook Pro, iphone 4S & ipad and these have no issues.
This appears to be a common fault with many reported instances.
Has anybody come up with a solution?

It's the opposite for me, i get poor (like 500kbs) throughput on my airport extreme at home but anywhere else such as a neighbors linksys (3-4mbs) or my wireless at the college (one time I hit 8mbs) I get fast data rates as tested by the speedtest app. My home laptop and desktop get 6mbs.
But really, I would never have noticed if not for reading these threads. I almost wonder if speedtest app doesn't like apple routers or something as I downloaded a free itunes download and it really wasn't that slow.
Here's hoping for apple airport and/or iphone firmware!

  • I'm in the process of creating a WiFi network from my IMac to my LG HDTV.  I am incorporating a LG WiFi capable Blu-ray player and will purchase an Apple Express or Apple Extreme router. I need some advise on using this aquipment.

I need help in determining the best way to create a WiFi network from my IMAC to a WiFi capable LG Blu-Ray player that will connect to my LG HDTV.  Since I will only need one network I need to know which is the best Apple Airport router to use (Express or Extreme).  What is the correct way to connect these units?  It seem self explanitory, but I'm checking my thinking.  My HDTV is about 20' from where the airport router will be installed with a wall between them.  Has anyone created this network?  Is this the best way to create a WiFi network?

How is the C6200 connected to the iMac, is it via USB or Wi-Fi? If it's via Wi-Fi please make sure it's connected to the router using the printer's Network Wizard. Then click System Preferences - Print & Scan and assuming the iMac is on the same network as the printer, if it is the printer should be seen. If it's not then click the + sign and add the printer. • I can't find a wifi printer on my imac

    Hello,
I can't find a wifi printer on my imac. It's always linked automatically to wifi printers before. It's an HP deskjet, I've tried downloading drivers for it, but still no joy. Any ideas what I should do? Thanks,

In future posts, please tell us more of the details - which printer, which Mac, which OS X version, etc. Have you changed anything lately?
First thing I would try is Reset Printing System (and after, try adding the printer again):

Read here about which printers are supported, and how we Normally get drivers now (Not by downloading directly from Manufacturer):

Are you testing in the same room as the TC?
Power cycle the TC.. does it show up now?
Has it ever showed up .. ie is this a problem that just started from an existing setup, or has never worked?
Is the TC new? If old how old?
If you continue to have issues.. setup the TC from iMac and preferably using ethernet.
Change the wireless names to SMB compatible ones, short no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
    Use WPA2 Personal security only.
Then set the wireless channels manually.. try 11, 6, 1 for 2.4ghz and try 36 or 40 at 5ghz.
    Tell us how that goes.
