Poor WiFi performance on fibre

Having low speeds since having fibre. Rang technical a few weeks ago who said to change channel and put something else to 54g performance. This has made no change. Seen on forums about poor wifi on router so did wifi speed test and got 12.16 Mbps. Did wired speed test and got 37.94 Mbps. Router stats           Down.                          Upconn speed.               40000 kbps.           9999 kbpsline att.                      12.2 db.                        0.0dB noise marg.              22.4 dB.                       22.22 dB can anyone help with what to do next

Hi  It isn't a hard task piggybacking a wifi router onto he Sky Hub. All that is required is picking the right wifi router for the task within your budget. Personally I recommend Apple AirPort Extremes because they are very reliable and easy to setup, they almost set themselves up automagically. The internet provider you pick is completely up to you, but be advised that I've seen those on Virgin Media with their wifi router have reliability issues, and they have also needed to piggyback a wifi router on to Virgin Media's offering. Realistically how can one expect ISPs to offer top notch wifi routers when they are attempting to offer a good broadband service only, they clearly aren't specialises in offering wifi products because of the cost associated with manufacturing such offerings.

  • I have recently upgraded my ipad mini to iOS 6.0.2 and still have poor wifi performance. My 3rd generation ipad works great on the same network. I have done all the resets I can think of but nothing helps. I would not have purchased the mini had I known.

On the same wifi network, third generation ipad, iphone4s and MacBook Pro work just fine.  The ipad mini often can not connect with the mail server and seems to hang a long time trying to open a web page. Had I known the mini had this kind of difficulty on wifi, I would have reconsidered my purchase. I have tried resetting the network and renewing the lease on the mini in addition. To completing the most current iOS upgrade. Still poor wifi performance. Unacceptable, in my opinion.

Yes I tried this manyfold. But did not work.  Reading on, I took Tesserac's advice. Shut down router and computer.
Start router after 15 minutes and wait another 10 minutes before starting the computer.
Et voila.... everything is back in working order,

  • Airport Extreme Poor WiFi Performance

I've been doing periodic bandwidth tests with speedtest.net for several years now. I have an account, so my results are saved. I do them from a Mac Mini and also from my iPad.
The MacMini is hardwired to an Airport Extreme. The iPad is, of course, using WiFi. Usually it is on the 5GHz network, but sometimes (I have no idea why) it selects the 2.4GHz network. The 5GHz network is "n only", the 2.4GHz network is b/g/n. Security is WPA/WPA Personal. The Airport Extreme is on firmware 7.6.1. (I rolled back in December, a couple of months after I noticed the degraded WiFi performance.)
Until mid-October of last year, the results on the iPad were similar to those on the MacMini.
    For example:
    On October 4 : iPad - 10.27 Mbps; Mini - 11.25 Mbps
    On July 21   : iPad - 10.13 Mbps; Mini - 11.39 Mbps
However, beginning with tests done in late October, the results for the iPad are markedly inferior to those of the Mini:
    On January 17: iPad - 00.49 Mbps; Mini - 06.14 Mbps
    Today        : iPad - 00.87 Mbps; Mini - 08.69 Mbps
Oddly, when I switch the iPad to the 2.4GHz network, it does much better: 2.40 Mbps (today) But, still, much worse than before October and much worse than the Mac Mini. All the iPhones in the house are on the 2.4GHz network and get results similar to the iPad. However, none of them have as much test history saved.
I don't think it's a question of interference. None of my neighbors have 5GHz capable routers. On 2.4 GHz, I'm using channel 1. Both of my neighbors with routers are on channel 6. No cordless phones or other cordless devices in this house.
I have recently reset the network settings on both the iPad and iPhone.
So, what did I do to mess up the WiFi on my Airport Extreme?

    Thanks.
    Model is A1408.
I set the 2.4GHz network to channel 8.
I had to leave the 5GHz network to "Automatic" because choosing 36, 40 or 44 prevented both of my Airport Expresses from connecting. They would only connect with "Automatic".
All the names are alphanumeric and short: mgn, mgn5ghz, AirEx, etc.
I disconnected my MacMini's ethernet cable and just used WiFi. As expected, bandwidth decreased from the normal 10Mbps to about 2.8 Mbps.
I did not do a factory reset as family is about to come home and I don't want to be fiddling when they're expecting working WiFi. I'll do it tomorrow.

  • Poor WiFi performance on new Mac Mini ?

My new mac mini purchased a few days ago (late 2009) was exhibiting abysmal WiFi performance on 802.11n 5Ghz. I was barely getting 1Mbyte/sec through it, despite good signal strength (-50db), and my iMac which is feet away on -58db is giving almost 18Mbyte/sec...
Anyway - after much gnashing of teeth, and even placing the mini next to my extreme basestation I gave up, then tried, out of desperation, resetting the PRAM... Fixed!
Why on earth a brand new machine should need this doing, I'm not sure, but the old Alt-Cmd-P-R at boot up, waiting for the second BONG, and then letting it continue, fixed everything, and it now zooms along as fast as my other Macs.
Just for info - hope it helps someone!

These are pings from my iMac to .02 (mbpro) and .11 macmini
the mbpro is sat right next to the mac mini... rebooting the mini sorts this out... Come on, somebody must have this problem as well?

  • Extremely poor WiFi performance...

I got my touch (8gb) yesterday, and i've noticed my wifi performance is terrible. At home, on my wireless AP (802.11g), pinging the touch i notice at least 10% packet loss, and latency all over the place. At work on our 802.11b AP I see about 60% loss. I've tried every channel on both AP's to rule out interference.
If i let it go to sleep, when waking back up it's responsive for about 10 - 15 seconds, then takes a dive.

Browsing works during the brief period where it responds to ICMP, then it's nearly impossible to browse. It's not near as bad on my home connection though.
Any ideas other than replacing? I'm going to cruise around and try to find some open AP's to test on later today just to be sure it is defective hardware and not compatibility issues with the APs.

  • Macbook Pro 11,2 tests very poor WiFi performance compared to iPad

    Configuration:
    MBP 11,2 running 10.10.1
    Airport Express 2014 vintage
WiFi Scanner.app speed test results on MBP range from 1 to 3 Mbps. My iPad Air (or iPad Mini) in the same physical position tests between 18 and 28 Mbps. WiFi Scanner.app shows SNR of 17 to 18 dbm.
The reason I am testing is because I have noticed network performance on the new MBP to be very poor in our current NZ location. In Palo Alto 2 weeks ago the MBP wifi seemed fine - I didn't bother to test.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

  • Why the poor wifi performance on iPhone 5

I am using my iPhone 5 and five feet away my wife has her new iPad.  Both on the same wifi.  The iPad is showing three bars but the iPhone 5 goes from two to none.  It sometimes looses all wifi signal and drops off to cellular.  I thought one of the recent upgrades to the iOS was supposed to fix wifi reception problems on the iPhone 5.
    Any solutions?

Some added info for my question.  We have an Airport Extreme on our computer and an Airport Express in the area where we sit to improve the signal.  My wife's iPad is about six feet away from the Express; I am about two feet.  Her signal has to go through me so I think the iPhone reception should be stronger.

  • Anyone else notice poor WiFi performance on iPhone 4 after IOS5 update? I have two iPhone 4 at home, slow slow downloads. One of them I've tested WiFi at work, Same issue. e.g. Apps take forever to download over WiFi compared to a AT

I have two iPhone 4 at home, slow slow downloads. One of them I've tested WiFi at work, Same issue. e.g. Apps take forever to download over WiFi compared to a AT&T-3G connection.

I have only just got an iphone 4 which I immediately updated to ios7 so have nothing to compare it with. But it doesn't even see networks that come up clear on the macbook. Same thing for a colleague in the same spot. previously I had an android phone which picked up just fine.

  • Poor Wifi Performance On MBP

    Hi guys,
I have a year old 2.26 GHz MBP and never had any complaints. However over the past few weeks I have noticed that the wi-fi performance has become really bad. Even if I step out with my MBP a few feet away, either the speed gets dropped considerably or I get a connection time out and I can't connect. I have a 4 old white Macbook and it works fine in the same setup and distance. I have also got my router replaced twice thinking it was initially a problem with the connection. But now I think there is an issue with my MBP. I have already formatted my drive, done a clean install, fixed permission, rest pram etc. As I said its a recent issue and I have no clue what to do.
Do you think Apple will replace the Ethernet card?
    Thanks

If your MBP is only one year old and has a 2.26G processor, it sounds like you have a 13" MBP. If so, that model is newer with somewhat different hardware from the older MBPs this forum covers. If you have a 13", consider asking in the forums for the Late 2008 and newer MBPs here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=251
It's not your fault--the forum labeling is about as non-intitive as you can make it!
That said, sometimes clearing out the repository of old networks you've used can help with connection issues. Go to System Preferences > Network and click "Airport" in the left pane. Then, in the main pane, click the "Advanced" button in the lower right corner. That should open a new window with the "Airport" tab selected. In the middle is a list of all networks you've joined. Delete all that you do not use on a weekly basis.
This often helps with connection issues, particularly those that gradually appear like is seems yours have.

  • MacBook Pro (1st gen Intel) : poor wifi performance vs MacBook (early 2009)

I have an issue with my old _MacBook Pro (1st generation Intel)_ which is much slower than my brand new MacBook (from early 2009) : all the bandwith tests show the _MBP being at 50% speed vs the MacBook_. I use my iPhone on my network as well and is behaving better than the MBP...
Do you have any idea where that comes from ?
    Thanks for your help,
FYI : the MBP is on OS X 10.4 vs OS X 10.5 for the new MB. I have MAC adress filtering for the 3 equipment...

I've had the same problem with my MacBook Pro from Late 2008.
Yesterday, I had a Lenovo and Sony laptop sat right next to my MacBook Pro, and the Macbook was the only laptop that couldn't maintain a Wi-Fi connection.  Usually, it couldn't even keep the connection for more than a minute or so.
I tried changing my Router's configuration (eg change to Channel 1, etc)  but in the end, I gave up and had to buy a Wi-Fi Range Extender device.   It was very easy to install and setup, there isn't even an install CD or software to install..
My MacBook now has a fast, reliable Wi-Fi connection.
What I don't know  (and didn't try)  is whether attaching a 802.11N USB device to my MacBook Pro would've improved it's Wi-Fi connection.  This might've been a cheaper option, but as I wanted my iPad & iPod to also have an improved Wi-Fi connection, I went for the Range Extender instead.

  • Yoga 13 Extremely Poor Wifi Speeds

I currently have the most recent driver installed(1.04.0213) and all other current W8 updates are installed, but I am still experiencing poor WiFi performance. I have also changed the wireless adapter setting power saving mode to Maximum Performance for both the "On battery" and "Plugged in" options in Windows 8's advanced power options menu.
I also have the following options set on the advanced tab for the Realtek WLAN card:
    Antenna Diversity Type: 1
    Bandwidth: 20_40Mhz
    Selective Suspend: Disabled
    Selective Suspend Timeout: 60
    WiFi Config: Performance
After the most recent driver update, my connectivity issues were resolved, but my speed issues were not. My current set up is as follows:
    PC: Lenovo Yoga 13 w/Realtek RTL8732A Wireless LAN 802.11n
Router: RT-N56U IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n,  IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab (Firmware is up to date)
I rarely am able to exceed 10 Mbps and am lucky to average between 1-2 Mbps. I currently pay for Frontier Fios Internet rated at 35 Mbps down and 15 Mbps up. Websites take a ridiculous amount of time to load and YouTube videos can't be played without constant buffering.
Every other device that I have connected to my router, whether they are hard wired or wireless, is able to maintain 30-35 Mbps, even at peak usage times. I currently have a MacBook Pro, an iPad 3, HTC One(M7), Iphone 5, Asus Essentio, and an Asus X54C laptop that are all operating as expected on my network.
I know similar threads exist on the message boards for the Yoga 13, but none of the "Solutions" address this issue. Please address this issue and post a solution that is a permanent fix for this laptop! It has the potential to be an amazing device, but the WiFi issues are keeping it from reaching its true potential!

  • Poor wifi streaming and performance on ipad air

With my 32GB ipad air I'm trying to stream video down both from youtube through the stsandard app and also from my kingston MobileLite Wifi media streamer.
In both cases the wifi performance appears shockingly bad at times with regular instances of the youtube videos shifting to low quality resolution and sound and the Wifi streamer device refusing to play any large file at all, plus taking an absolute age to load documents etc.
I've tried with the ipad Air running through my hub at home and also via this device and the performance is shocking compared to my iphone 4s.  I loaded a 2gb movie on the phone and bar one stutter at the start it played with no issues, whereas the ipad refused to load anything.  Even movies I have shot on the iphone then copied across to the streamer play incredably slowly.
As this is happening when using two or three seperate wifi routes then it's got to be something to do with the pad....
    Any ideas?

  • Flex 3 15 WiFi - Poor, Spotty Performance

I have a new Flex 3 15" laptop (maybe a month old) and am experiencing horrible wifi performance out of it. We have other wifi devices in the home connecting to the exact same access points right next to the problem laptop that do not experience any of these problems. This is on a clean install of Windows 10 x64. The network is a robust 2.4ghz and 5ghz network with high bandwidth (~50gbps to the internet). The issues are seen when sitting 10-15 feet in direct line-of-sight to two different access points. After disabling power-saving features for the adapter (max performance all the time) I no longer see much latency to common domains like google.com (test via continuous ping). I'm unable to browse to many websites or they take several minutes and/or repeated attempts to load. Windows utilities also frequently indicate they cannot connect to the internet.hen I use the same browser via a wired connection the page loads immediately. The issue almost seems like a layer 4 or 5 issue given that continuous ping - either to my default gateway or to a domain like google.com - is continuously successful with low latency (~20ms). I've tried drivers both off of Windows update as well as Lenovo's website to no avail. I also have updated BIOS to the latest version available on Lenovo's website as I saw earlier there was an issue between Bluetooth and the internal wifi card. I've disabled Bluetooth as well for good measure. Ideas before I try to wade through the mire Lenovo support?

So after a call with Lenovo support I'm dumbfounded. The person told me flat-out that the wireless drivers for Windows 10 posted on their website do not work. He indicated that Windows 10 is the cause of the problem, that it's still very new and the drivers are not yet ready for it. He stated that the drivers that Lenovo made available for this laptop for Windows 10 were provided by Microsoft and are bad. My choices, apparently, are to either revert to Windows 8.1 or to wait for Windows 10 to "stabilize." I can't accept that answer as anything but a blatant dodge of the issue. First is the problem of Lenovo posting drivers it knows are bad on its website. Second is the issue that Windows 10 has been in public beta for a loooooong time now and almost certainly hardware manufacturers have had prerelease builds for much longer. There really isn't any excuse here, especially for such a critical component as a network driver. If Lenovo does not support Windows 10 they need to acknowledge it, or at least indicate which of their products can and can't work with it. I don't care of Windows 10 is a new OS, they've had more than enough time to prepare for it.

Anyone else noticing  iPad 3 wifi performance slows down significantly whilst using Bluetooth stereo headphones?  I can't even stream from YouTube or NBA.tv if I'm paired with Bluetooth headphone ( tried two different headphones). I can switch between Bluetooth and iPad speaker and watch the speed and performance increase instantly. I have and iPad 2 and it does not do this.

Try change the WiFi channel e.g. channel 1, 6, or 11

  • Mac Mini 2012 Poor Wifi

    Hi All,
I've had my 2012 Mac Mini (the basis of my home music recording setup) about 9-10 months and always had poor wifi connection. Download speeds are terrible and it can take hours to download a few MBs
My provider is Sky Fibre Broadband with the Sky Hub. It's all less than 12 months old. It doesn't seem to have the 5ghz option that's been mentioned.
Another point to note is that the signal isn't trying to penetrate several thick walls, the Sky hub is in the next room less than 10 metres away with a direct line of sight through 2 doorways.
I've been through everything in this thread Intermittent and slow Wi-Fi connection on Mac Mini Solved! to no avail. I've tried turning off monitors, speakers, hard drives, bluetooth (even though I need to use this to connect my iPad for studio use). It's completely unusable. I even have the sky booster for the wifi sat  next to the Mac and it makes no difference. My Mac Mini is updated to latest OS X Mavericks which took a very long time to download!
The only thing left for me to try is running a long ethernet cable from the sky hub to see how it is wired. This I am going to do today when I'be been to buy a cable as it's not convenient and unworkable to strip down my home studio to move it to another room.
Yesterday I spent a long time on the phone to apple support and they seem to think there's a problem with my home network and interferance. We went through all sorts, deleting startups items, caches and so on
Although every other device in my home works absolutely fine. These include Windows 8 laptop, Google Nexus, LG G2 Android Phone, iPhone 4s, 2x iPod 4th Gen, Xbox 360, PS3, LG Smart TV, iPad Air. Note these aren't all on at the same time!
It did connect using the iPhone 4s as a hotspot to test which is why Apple insist there is no problem with the hardware, although the WiFi doesn't pick up any other local networks available for example my neighbours of which there are around 8 I can see on other devices.
    Any thoughts?
Out of interest does anyone think getting an Apple Airport Express, connecting it to the Sky Hub but connecting my Mac to Airport rather than the Sky Hub directly would work? In effect creating an isolated connection from the other devices in the house? Maybe they will take to each other in a nicer way. I'm a bit confused by what I can do with the Airport and want to afford splashing out on different routers etc. Trying to get them to work on Sky I can just feel the headache!
Thanks in advance, hope the above is enough info

If you ALT+Click on the Mini WiFi icon in the menu bar, you should see a 'Open Wireless diagnostics'. If you click on it and press command+2, it will bring up a utilities window.
There are two functions that you should consider. Wi-Fi Scan and Performance. There is also Logging, Frame Capture and Info. You can look at these and analyze what may be issues with your Mini.
