Poor wifi signal

My New Macbook air has very poor wifi signal, I have to sit within feet of my router to have a usable connection, I cannot even use it in the next room.
Does anybody else have this problem, and would purchasing a antenna booster or signal repeater do the job?

If you gave some information on what network equipment you are using (make, model, version) and where you are experiencing signal problems it would help in giving advice.

  • Yoga Tablet 10 HD+ Poor WiFi Signal Strengh

I recently bought a Yoga Tablet 10 HD+. I love the product but it has very poor WIFI reception strength throughout my house. I have 2 other name brand tablets that have no issues with WIFI signal in my house at all. Is there a fix for this or updated software? It is really annoying and might be the reason that I return this tablet. Thank you.

  • Problems with poor wifi signal strength, need help?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated? This is a lengthy explanation. Thanks in advance.
I have a 3rd generation Airport Extreme wirelessly bridged to a 4th generation Time Capsule. I have noticed only mild increase in signal strength.  Surprisingly I have only 1 – 2 bars of signal strength when standing next to the bridged Airport Extreme. There are areas of the house that continue to have very weak coverage ranging from 0 – 2 bars depending on the day and others that continue to have no wifi coverage.
The house has Cat 5 cable in all rooms. Most rooms only have a phone jack wired to the end of the Cat 5 cable but two rooms have data ports. All the wires (phone and data) run to the same junction box and are connected to, what appears to be, a simple parallel bridge.  (There are a couple unused access points on the bridge. A few years back, I ran an additional line for a phone by simply pressing the colored wire into the corresponding site and the phone works fine)
It was suggested to plug the two routers directly into the data ports rather than have them communicate wirelessly. When doing this, I had no signal at the other end and the phone stopped working.
What is the best way to fix the weak wifi signal problem?
    1.     Do I need to tweak my current wireless set up? (FYI, In the Airport Utility, both devices are listed and have green dots)
    2.     Do I need to buy an additional Airport Extreme to bridge to the Time Capsule to cover the current dead areas? (unless there is something I should do different in the set up, hesitant to do this, since I have only seen a marginal boost with my current bridge)
    3.     Would it be better to use the existing cat 5 cable and create a functional “hard wired” network that I can use to connect the two wireless routers? (If this is the answer, is this something relatively simple that I can do myself or should I hire a professional?)
    Thanks again.

It was typical awhile back, where you have "whole-house" Ethernet running back to a patch panel to use the cable runs for both data and phone service. This works fine as long as you only wanted 100 Mbps Ethernet (or Fast Ethernet) connections for data. Gigabit Ethernet requires all of the twisted pairs in the CAT-5 cable and cannot share any of those pairs for phone lines.
So any wall outlet that is wired for both phone & data will not provide Gigabit Ethernet ... unless there are at least two CAT-5 cables going to that outlet. I am only mentioning this as to the potential for reduced bandwidth on some of your connections as all of your AirPort base stations are Gigabit capable.
As far as "weak" signals, I am assuming that you have configured all of your AirPort base stations for a roaming and NOT an extended wireless network ... correct? Even if you already have, please review the following Apple Support article to make sure you didn't miss anything. Please post back your results.

  • K1: Very poor WiFi signal - tried nearly everything with WiFi Booster, DNS,...

    Hi,
I have read a lot about bad signals and possibilities to fix (Channel, DNS,...) but nothing helps.
Every Wlan around me is very low only if I stay next to my router it´s ~ OK.
I also read a lot about bad hardware - should I have to change my K1?
    I have a K1 with 3.2.1
Is it possible that it will get better with ICS?
    Any hints, help?
    Thx

  • Can anyone tell me or give me a link to the latest response from Apple regarding very real weak wifi signal on what seems to be a batch of both the new ipad and the earlier Ipad2. I have just bought a 2nd hand ipad2 and it has a very weak wifi signal

Over the last week or so I have been trawling the internet looking for references to weak wifi signals on the Ipad2 and was staggered by the sheer quantity of people who seem to have identical issues, not just with the ipad2 but also with the new ipad. What annoyed me most from reading the reams upon reams of comments made on the Apple community forum is the fairly large number of people who seemed to believe that 'these' people were either just moaners and wingers or else they must have something wrong with their router set-up rather than a serious fault with their ipad and it seems all because there ipad in question works like a dream.
Obviously I can only speak from my experience, and that is, I have an ipad2 32GB with wifi, purchased about 6 months ago and it works like dream with a good 2-3 bar wifi signal through 2 thick stone walls over 30 feet away. My router is a standard one supplied by my broadband supplier compatible with all 'g','b' and 'n' equipment. However, over a week ago now I bought second hand genuine ipad2 16GB with wifi from a close friend who has just purchased a new ipad3 to replace his old ipad2 (had it for over a year so no longer under warranty). When I started it up downstairs from my router, where I always use my other ipad2 which has a very strong wifi signal, I discovered that the new secondhand ipad2 I had purchased couldnt find a network signal at all. So after doing network resets and all other 'fixes' on the device recommended, I took it upstairs to my office where the router is based and found that the device could now locate the network, but the signal was lost over only 12 feet from the router!
I quizzed my good friend about this issue and he informed me that it has always been like this since he first purchased it and he never thought that it was a fault, it was just the way it was. When he first aquired the device he did think at the time that this distance was poor, but thought nothing of it as he didnt have any other ipad to measur ethe signal strength against, and as his router was in his living room anyway he nothing of it. Fair enough.
So, there we have it. One ipad2 with a very good wifi signal and another ipad2  with a very poor wifi signal running off the same router, both with the same IOS 5.0. ?
As well as all of the other isues that customers have picked up on, such as 'death grip' (which I must say does appear to happen, but personally i dont think that this is a serious issue if you are aware of this issue and have a strong signal anyway), my experience seems to be a good  example of a 'duff' wifi ipad versus a 'great' wifi ipad', an issue confirmed by complaints from a fairly large number of customers who have also reported the same or similar weak wifi signals with both the ipad2 and the ipad3. So, as this shows the weak wifi signal is a very real issue it seems on a batch of ipad2 and 3's, which to my logic is obviously a hardware issue on a batch of early ipad2's and not a software one, otherwise all ipad's would suffer this problem! So, is it a faulty antenna or a faukty network card in an early batch?
So, the bottom line now is, of course, firstly,  how can I get Apple to fix my other ipad2 when the warranty has run out? Any suggestions anyone?
Personally I think good Apple customer service should offer a recall with a replacement on this apparent batch of ipads, dont you?

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

Have brand new iphone 4s. Wifi signal is very weak even when very close to router. I have also an iPod Touch and when both are side by side, the iPod wifi signal is excellent and the iPhone wifi signal is very poor??!!! Hardware issue? or software issue? I was hoping it is just a software issue, but...
Saw may web sites discussing this same issue; many discussions point to hardware problems but there is no official word from Apple about it, which is disapointing !??  Few discussions point to software problem with solutions based on try and error, and they don't seem to work.

did not help at all; the problem continues the same

  • Wifi signal is poor. Sometime the signal lost and have to lock back my phone.

Do u have the same experience? Im only one room away from my wifi router but the wifi signal keep on losing especially when my phone in use for more than 10min(approximtly). Tired of this.

Roamingnome, thanks for your response. Although I have been a Bell (Canada) customer for my WiFi signal for years, the 5c and its necessary mobility plan, is very recent. Some years ago, Bell supplied its own ‘router’ for my computer, and claimed that it was possible to get their WiFi signal only with the router they supplied. When I recently received the 5c, I wondered if the plan it requires, which is within the much wider, overall Bell zone, could be used somehow to get my Air online - some sort of tethering? - that allows me to give up the Air WiFi service and router all together, but still get the Air connected. Here in Canada, Bell Mobility and other Bell services are very separate. Any suggestions appreciated.

  • Mac Mini 2012 Poor Wifi

    Hi All,
I've had my 2012 Mac Mini (the basis of my home music recording setup) about 9-10 months and always had poor wifi connection. Download speeds are terrible and it can take hours to download a few MBs
My provider is Sky Fibre Broadband with the Sky Hub. It's all less than 12 months old. It doesn't seem to have the 5ghz option that's been mentioned.
Another point to note is that the signal isn't trying to penetrate several thick walls, the Sky hub is in the next room less than 10 metres away with a direct line of sight through 2 doorways.
I've been through everything in this thread Intermittent and slow Wi-Fi connection on Mac Mini Solved! to no avail. I've tried turning off monitors, speakers, hard drives, bluetooth (even though I need to use this to connect my iPad for studio use). It's completely unusable. I even have the sky booster for the wifi sat  next to the Mac and it makes no difference. My Mac Mini is updated to latest OS X Mavericks which took a very long time to download!
The only thing left for me to try is running a long ethernet cable from the sky hub to see how it is wired. This I am going to do today when I'be been to buy a cable as it's not convenient and unworkable to strip down my home studio to move it to another room.
Yesterday I spent a long time on the phone to apple support and they seem to think there's a problem with my home network and interferance. We went through all sorts, deleting startups items, caches and so on
Although every other device in my home works absolutely fine. These include Windows 8 laptop, Google Nexus, LG G2 Android Phone, iPhone 4s, 2x iPod 4th Gen, Xbox 360, PS3, LG Smart TV, iPad Air. Note these aren't all on at the same time!
It did connect using the iPhone 4s as a hotspot to test which is why Apple insist there is no problem with the hardware, although the WiFi doesn't pick up any other local networks available for example my neighbours of which there are around 8 I can see on other devices.
    Any thoughts?
Out of interest does anyone think getting an Apple Airport Express, connecting it to the Sky Hub but connecting my Mac to Airport rather than the Sky Hub directly would work? In effect creating an isolated connection from the other devices in the house? Maybe they will take to each other in a nicer way. I'm a bit confused by what I can do with the Airport and want to afford splashing out on different routers etc. Trying to get them to work on Sky I can just feel the headache!
Thanks in advance, hope the above is enough info

If you ALT+Click on the Mini WiFi icon in the menu bar, you should see a 'Open Wireless diagnostics'. If you click on it and press command+2, it will bring up a utilities window.
There are two functions that you should consider. Wi-Fi Scan and Performance. There is also Logging, Frame Capture and Info. You can look at these and analyze what may be issues with your Mini.

  • My iPad 2 picks up very weak wifi signal, but my iPod touch 5 in the same spot picks up super strong signal. What can I do to change this?

I have an iPad 2 and am iPod touch 5. Yesterday, my iPad all of the sudden did not want to pick up ANY signal at all in my house. It's like it completely give up on wifi, while my iPod and my laptop works just fine in the same spot. (I have an upstairs bedroom, while the router is downstairs in the kitchen).
So I have been trying yesterday to get it to work so what I have done is completely wipe the memory clean after I backed it up on iTunes. After resetting it, I restored it. Still nothing. So I tried to take my iPad down nearer to the wifi router, and OMG it picked up the wifi signal! WHUT?!? It didn't yesterday though...
But now whenever I am up in my bedroom, my iPad would not pick up the wifi at all, or if it did, the wifi would be super duper weak! But two days ago, it was PERFECTLY okay! My iPod and laptop that is sitting right next to the iPad up in my bedroom pick up the signal completely fine.
Can someone help me? What should I do? Is it problems with my iPad or would it be my router that is the problem?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Improve wifi signal?

I live in a shared apartment. The router is placed in the hall and my room is across it on the inside. If I step out of the room, I get full signal, but inside the room I get two bars. I don't have a laptop or PC. I want to know how can I improve my signal strength? Will a signal repeater come in handy? Is there any signal booster? Or do I need to add a router to the connection.. Thanks.

How is the router located in the hall - on a shelf? Position it as high as you can. Sometimes the router signal is somewhat directional. Experiment by turning the router to different positions.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Poor WIFI on 3GS

Just got the new 3GS and am impressed except for the wifi is poor compared to my original iphone. It latches on fine and displays the wifi signal as full yet when i go to safari or email etc it just sits on the loading page for ages whereas my old iphone would load immediatley as im on a 5mb connection speed.
Anyone else had this or is it a hardware issue?

It's the opposite for me, i get poor (like 500kbs) throughput on my airport extreme at home but anywhere else such as a neighbors linksys (3-4mbs) or my wireless at the college (one time I hit 8mbs) I get fast data rates as tested by the speedtest app. My home laptop and desktop get 6mbs.
But really, I would never have noticed if not for reading these threads. I almost wonder if speedtest app doesn't like apple routers or something as I downloaded a free itunes download and it really wasn't that slow.
Here's hoping for apple airport and/or iphone firmware!

  • Creating a better WiFi signal in basement

Can I add an Airport Express in the basement to an Airport Extreme located on the main floor to create a better WiFi signal in the basement?  Thanks!

    Yes, you can.
This is called "extending" a network.  There are actually two ways to do this.....one much better than the other.
The "best" way to extend is connect the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection.
The "maybe it will work" way is to try to use wireless to connect the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express.  When you do it this way, the AirPort Express can only extend the quality of signal that receives, so if the wireless is poor now in the basement, the Express will receive a poor signal to try to extend, and things will likely not work very well.
Wireless is worth a try, I suppose if you don't want to run the Ethernet cable. Be prepared to experiment with different locations of the AirPort Express.
It would also be a good idea to make sure that you understand the store's return policy before you buy, as it is possible that things may be worse, not better than they are now.
