Poorly MBP - Booting/Crashing Issues.
Hi Folks,
Recently my MBP has been getting more and more ill, i've spent a lot of time trying tips and tricks i've found to see if i can resolve the issue. The most odd thing seems to be that the problem only really occurs at work, when attached to an SBS2000 AD domain, at home it works fine.
The list of issues are:
1) Frequent system crashes, lots of apps stop responding and Force Quit doesn't always do so..
2) Disk Images/USB Disks don't mount... the DMG's just sit there "attaching" whereas the USB drives don't mount at all.
3) Most irritating is that i frequently have to force shut down (press and hold power button) as the apps crashing mean Finder won't actually shut down correctly. When i have to reboot most times it won't reboot properly;
a) Some times the top bar will appear, but on the right only Spotlight, no other icons and nothing on desktop.
b) Other times it will appear to have booted up fine but will actually have crashed totally, i.e. you can't click on any icons/dock.
c) Some times the Dock will appear but no desktop icons.
Invariably i will have to disconnect the Network Cable, disable the Airport and also remove the external USB HDD and eventually after a couple more attempts the machine will boot up fine....
4) Frequently the machine won't wake from sleep, i get left with a spinning beach ball of doom... I have applied the latest Firmware as i know this was an issue with early units (mine's an early model)
I've repaired disk permissions with Disk utility, run the Apple Hardware Test (came back fine) and tried lots of other little tweaks (MacJanitor etc) I downloaded a program WhatSize to see where the large files were as i was preparing to reinstall Tiger and noticed that my Entourage/Microsoft User Data Database is 22Gb! I am the SysAdmin so have a couple of Mailboxes open at once... could this rather large amount of data being sent back and forth across the network cause the problems, or are there other things i should be doing???
Please help if you can as i'm going mad
Thanks
Scott

This one of the many reasons I say people should move off Entourage. Here on my personal website, I explain how:
http://www.macmaps.com/entouragemigration.html
But the fact images won't mount, says that your mounting preferences or cache may be corrupted. You can try a different user to see if the problem persists there. At least that will tell you if the problem is systemwide, or localized to your user.
The fact it only happens at work, says something is wrong with the firmware of the router you use at work, or that the power supply at work may not be clean.
I would repair permissions and see if that improves matters as well. Do that with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility.
Also don't use any other utility other than a backup utility, Macjanitor or Anacron. Utilities such as Cocktail, AppleJack, Onyx, Macaroni, Tiger Cache Cleaner can cause the issues you are seeing if run at the wrong time because system caches are constantly written to, and if one of those programs should interrupt the writing of those files, those can become corrupt and cause systemwide degradation of the sort you've been seeing. I've seen it happen on few people's machines. Most important is that you backup your data now, just in case these are also symptoms of a dying hard drive.

I have a new 15" MBP and it occasionally has issues booting where it will get to the gray Apple screen and the spinning circle will freeze. Also when it has been asleep for a while (1+ hour) it will almost always freeze when trying to wakeup. If I force it to sleep or close the lid and immediately revive it, it always works. Is there anything I can try to do to diagnose the issue? I took it to the Apple store and they ran a drive repair and we couldn't reproduce the issue. It did it again on the first boot once I got home.
Thanks in advance.Welcome to AD!
Well,
there is this Apple doc.

Is there something wrong with my MBP? Crashing issues..
So mine has crashed at LEAST once a week, meaning it completely freezes, no force quit, etc.. last time it happened was when I was capturing footage from my camcorder.
I'm just curious how often your guys' MBPs last before crashing and if it's something to worry about if it crashes 1-2 times in a week.. I've only had it for about a month now, so maybe it's just some unlucky things happening..
Usually it's not when I'm doing nothing, so I figured perhaps I was pushing the computer too hard.
Times that it's crashed (that I remember):
Capturing footage from my camcorder, camcorder ran out of batteries stopping the capture, everything froze.
On Firefox surfing the web.
On Maya working on a project.
And sometimes it crashes after I leave it sitting. I'll come back and I can't move the mouse or do anything.
I got the laptop about a month ago. You guys think I should take it in to the Apple Store? If so, what should I tell them/should I ask them for a replacement? I ordered it off MacMall, and I've never been into the Apple store customer service so I don't really know how to go about it.
Also, I installed 2x 2GB RAM by myself, is there any chance this could be part of the issue? It's DDR3 ram, and is definitely compatible, and it says 4GB installed in my "About This Mac", so I'm not sure if that would be the problem.
It's probably better that I replace it if it IS abnormal before I have it for too long, I would think. I just don't know if it's something I need to worry about.
Message was edited by: RizziceThese machines in themselves are usually pretty good, with the occasional aberration. Let's hope you do not have a rogue.
Looking at the problems there seem to me (as a guess) two problems: incomplete processes and memory. The two may be related. The camera problem I would dismiss as simply that -- batteries run out and the Mac is trying to complete an impossible process: expecting data, data never arrives.
The Firefox problem may be something external: a badly coded page; something the browser (or Mac) was not equipped to handle (a plug-in for example) and this could put a strain on RAM.
Maya, I am not familiar with, but it is (if I remember rightly) graphics-oriented and that can be memory intensive).
Which all comes down to the RAM you bought. Without knowing what it is or where it came from, or your experience in installing it, that in itself could be a problem. You need to make sure that it is properly seated for one thing, that it is the correct type (although the information here suggests that you are on the right track) and that it is OK.
You might also want to think about posting a crash log here (find these in Console) as someone -- not me -- might be able to pinpoint a cause. -
Howdy,
Looks like I actually have a issue with my MBP
It's a 15" 2.2Ghz
It seems that maybe something is loose inside, as the problem will come and go. When I start the machine, it comes up with the grey screen, telling me to reboot.
I thought it was a bad HD, so I replace it, did a clean install with snow leapord. I even had trouble with it booting from the DVS when I was reinstalling. When that did not work, I replace the ram, with two fresh sticks of 2GB chips.
Some days it works, other days it does not. I used before I went on a work trip, when I got there, it did not work, as I tried for three days, then when I got home, it work the first time at start up. Now it's not working, and when it does work, it will lock up, and I have to restart it. I think something is loose inside, so not sure if I should go back inside and check all the connections?
Any thoughts? Right now I am thinking of taking it into our local repair place and have them send it back to apple. We don't have a apple store near by. Any suggestions before I send my computer away? Thanks for the feedback.
I did a extended hardware test this afternoon, and it came up with another error code, and I was able to boot the computer today! I got my new iPad sync to it, and now at least I have my calendar and email, so I am excited!!!
I am going to take it to the local mac dealer and do the flat rate repair. The machine has become to unreliable, so I need to get it fixed. However, when it does boot, it seems to be working fine. I thought about just buying another machine, but the ipad should hold me over until this one is fixed. I will post the other error code when I get home from work.
Enjoy,

MBP Boots Forever/Crashes on First (but not Second) Boot
Hi,
I am experiencing a somewhat odd phenomenon with my MBP:
If I close the lid without sleeping the MBP, the battery might keep on draining and when I open the MBP again later, all battery charge is gone.
If I now reconnect (power) and boot up the MBP, the MBP will not go past the stage where there is a grey background and the "beachball"... I had it in this stage for up to 2 hours, it is just not booting any further. If I do a hard reset (holding power button for 8 sec), the MBP boots normally... So, the MBP crahes on the first boot, but boots (always) successfully on the second boot.
The problem with the current state of things is, that I am regularily loosing work, as the latest files that were open are gone if not saved (which I tend to forget, as closing the lid does not always, and should never, lead to a system crash). I have Word set to auto-save every two minutes, but that does not always work and some other tools do not have that option.
My questions are:
1.) How can I make sure that closing the lid actually sleeps the MBP? (I was researching the problem and found that some people claim that this might be a problem of the Mac not being able to quickly enough dump my 8GB of RAM, and that disabling "safe sleep" via Terminal might solve the problem... it did not help).
2.) How can I prevent the make from freezing on the first boot? (I have also research that, but could not really find somehting specific. I have tried checking disk with disk utility (all OK) and reparing permissions to no avail).
I also had the MBP checked for hardware issues in the Store, and had Mavericks clean installed not long ago (had the same problem with Snow Leopard)...
Could it be my 4GB RAM extension? Or some specific app causing the problem? Any standard procedures to follow to narrow the issue down?
Cheers for any solution or workaround ideas!Hi,

Pavilion dv5 - 1217AX with Windows 8 - multiple booting and crashing issues
I have a Pavilion dv5 - 1217AX with Windows 8 operating system. It was upgraded from Vista to windows 8 last year and it worked really very well for about 1 year. Here are the issues I am facing these days
1. When powered on - Caps lock and Num lock LEDs keep flashing twice and the sequence keeps repeating - I checked the error code on some forums and it sounded like BIOS issue so I flashed the BIOS F38 again (SP46501) but it didn't help. I also thought it could be a memory issue so I removed the memory module and cleaned the slots and fixed the modules again but no luck. I also tried running the laptop using only one module, tried both the modules one by but no changes in error code. Then I thought it could be a toy bettery issue so replaced the toy batter that fits on the motherboard but no luck. I have also tried booting up removing the laptop battery pack but no luck.
So how does it boot now? - Once powered on I keep getting Caps lock Num lock LED flashing issues every time. Then I power off using power on/off button on laptop around 15 times or more then the laptop somehow boots up. There is no fixed pattern, sometimes it boots after 15 attempts, sometimes 50 attempts.
Whats happenes after booting? - Sometimes the screen goes completely blank without any error message on the screen. Sometimes Windows 8 crashes and laptop restarts, when it restarts I never see LED flashing issues (surprising). It crashes when I am watching some videos or playing some games, so looks like ATI Radeon driver issue (driver is 8.970.100.7000 for HD 3400 display card).
Let me know if there are any suggestion to fix the botting and crashing issues faced.Hi Expertit ,
At first sight ,seems to be a boot issiu.Did you thry this?
Booting into the Windows 8 setup, select “Repair your computer” in the bottom part of the window, then “Troubleshoot” and “Advanced options”. Here I was given a good reminder of another cool Windows 8 feature. If you have a restore point created you can go back to that working copy of the OS without losing your data.
So the first thing you will want to try is the Automatic Repair.
If that fixes your boot problem, you had it easy and go on to create a restore point for another time you are out of luck. If Windows is unable to fix your issue, read on.
Go back to the Advanced options and choose the Command Prompt. Going for the next easiest way to fix the problem, enter the following four commands into the prompt:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd
After receiving a success confirmation. Close the CMD window and restart your PC.
If you are booted into Windows, excellent! If not, let us know , so we can try some more solutions.
2.If your video crashes , it is probably wrong Catalyst settings.Right click on screen , open Catalyst control settings , set it to high (Radeon) performance.
Expecting your next post.

Question 4 Audio Pros using MBP booted in Win XP- do Win audio apps work?
Are any of you audio pros successfully using windows audio apps on a MBP booted into Win XP?
I understand that most pros will use native Mac audio applications under Mac OS X - there are obviously plenty to handle almost any job. However... the fact is, there are some very cool audio applications available for use under Windows exclusively.
While I do currently own a PC, I have owned dozens of macs in the past (ranging from the 33MHz Quadra 950, through the PowerBook G4 1GHz & PowerMac Dual G4 1.25GHz - all while working as a professional audio engineer). With that said, my experience with virtually booting into Windows with a Mac was horrible at best - specificially when attempting to use Windows for specialized audio work. But I haven't worked on a Mac since the fall of 2004. In the past 3 years, a lot has changed with the Mac line.
If you're an audio pro who has had success using audio applications made for windows on a MacBook Pro 2.2 or 2.4GHz, would you please let us know which Windows audio application(s) you have used with success?
(Please, if you do not have direct experience using audio applications for Windows on your MacBook Pro, please refrain from posting. I'm looking for comments from professionals with first hand experience, not opinions on what might or might not work. My most sincere thanks in advance.)It appears that you CAN use audio programs under Parallels without issue... I'm SOLD on this MBP. Thanks to oxxle from Germany for the assistance answering this question.

2008 mbp boots up with weird pattern on the screen
2008 mbp boots up with weird pattern on screen then says needs to restart but won't restart. Saw something about nvidia graphic card went bad and apple was replacing for free. Is that something apple is still doing and does that sound like my issue?
I know this is an old post, but people reading it may be interested by these two links:
http://totalpoop.com/apples-2008-macbook-pro-nvidia-graphics-card-recall.htm
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
I got this problem with my previous 2008 Macbook Pro, and it appeared just after the recall ended! Here in Canada, Apple is charging close to $500 to replace the motherboard (and the graphics card). Recently, I discovered a computer chop in Montréal where they told me they can replace the GPU for $200. I left them my computer and will get it back in a week or so. I hope it will fix the problem. -
Driver Crashing Issues (R9 280x 3G Gaming)
I am having a problem with my new R9 280x 3G Gaming. I know the drivers are buggy, but I'm not quite sure what the issue is. Sometimes the card is stable, I can run Furmark on it and game and everything seems fine. Then on reboot I will have issues with the driver crashing, sometimes right on boot when the desktop loads. I have tried the drivers supplied on the MSI site as well as the newest 3.11beta9.5 from AMD, both seem to act the same.
I'm not sure if its a bad card or just driver issues. Anyone experience anything similar?
ASUS Z87 Motherboard
i7 4770k
R9 280x 3G Gaming
12GB RAM
Windows 7 64S/N: 602-V277-26SB1310102381
The first driver I installed on it was the 13.11 Beta 9.5 driver from AMD. That had crashing issues, so I uninstalled and installed the driver from MSI. The issue continued. I have now ran driver sweeper and reinstalled the 13.11 Beta 9.5 and it has been stable for the last day or so.
Current vBIOS is: 015.040.000.000.003435 (113-C3865000-G77)
The 6870 from my old machine seemed to work fine in this unit, though I did not do too much testing with it.
I am using a Thermaltake TR2 850W PSU. -
MBP Boots sometimes - If logic or main board bad, what can I expect?
The Symptoms:
MBP Boots only occassionally. When it does not fully boot you can hear the disk and fan very slowly wind up, over the course of a minute. There is no startup chime. The screen never comes on and remains dark, no external monitor comes up, the keyboard and usb ports are disabled, and the latch light glows steady and dim. It doesn't repond to startup key commands and the disk you can hear doing something but nothing comes on.
I've swapped out the ram, booted into safe mode (when I can get it to boot), run disk utility and disk warrior, among other tools, booted from a flash drive to run diagnostics. Disk checks out fine, zapping pram, resetting smc, all this does nothing. Genius bar did diagnostics and couldn't find anything wrong, but offered me the repair depot.
Conclusions:
So after researching many threads the past few days, a trip to the apple store with some diagnostics, and further testing/swapping ram/resetting pram and smc, I've come to the conclusion that I must have a problem with the logic board or main board. My computer only starts up after about 5 cold boot attempts and/or some of the above processes. Once it's up and running it's fine. When it doesn't boot the drive spins up, the fans come on, but the screen/keyboard/usb etc are all inactive, and the latch light is a steady dim white. When the computer does boot it runs fine.
Question:
My question is, should I expect more serious problems in the near future, or is it at least possible that I could limp along for some months in this condition? I have the option to possibly submit it to repair depot for refurbishing, but if I could make it at least through some june update news I could make a more informed decision about what to do.
Any and all information, experience, or suggestions are much appreciated.I agree with you that the people who staff the genius bar are not genius' but technicians, and are of varying degrees of competency. However if you are offered what is referred by some as a 'depot repair', consider it very seriously.
My experience is as follow with my old 2006 MBPs: Several years ago I had a serious problem with the display and was offered said repair that would fix the display issue and any thing else that was found to be faulty.
The following was replaced;
The Display
The Optical drive
The Airport card
The top cover
(the old one had dents in it and there was no expectation on my part that it would be replaced)
The keyboard
The bottom case
The RAM cover
The total cost was a fixed price of $310 which was told to me up front. That is what I paid (plus tax). The invoice showed a total of $1240. I still have that MBP and it still looks and operates as new. This repair was not done locally, but at an off site location. I suspect it was done by very well qualified technicians.
If you are offered such an option and your budget can accommodate it, I suggest you take it. You also get a 90 day warranty with it.
Ciao. -

After upgrade to OSX Mavericks my 2009 MBP keeps crashing due to kernel panic (happens every 20 minutes or so). Please help me with this, it's getting very frustrating. Have tried disk utility, there were errors (file system was corrupted), the disk utility managed to repair the disk but the crashes continue.

I finished adding my transtions to my timeline. I was having crashing issues so I shut down everything before I rendered the project and now it tells me that the project is unreadable or the file is too new for this version of final cut. What Happened?
What Happened?
No way for us to know. But if your system was crashing, there definitely was a problem. The FCE error message you got normally indicates the FCE project file has been corrupted. This probably happened due to whatever caused your system to crash & shutting down the system.
First, make sure your system is running correctly. Then, use the Finder to navigate to /users/yourusername/Documents/Final Cut Express Documents/Autosave Vault and find the most recent backup copy of your FCE project file. Copy the file to your Final Cut Express Documents folder (copy the file, don't just move it). Then double-click the copy to open it in FCE. It should open ok, but will probably not have your most recent edits (transitions). You may have to rebuild the transitions, but at least you will be back in action. -
Is there a fix for the MBP wireless dropping issue?
I began to experience the Macbook Pro dropping wireless connectivity on my very 1st Apple in 2008. At the end of the day my machine was replaced with a new Macbook Pro mid 2010. It appeared to be working just fine until about 2-3 months ago when I started dropping my wireless printer connection. I searched the internet hoping for a driver update from HP or something from Apple and each time I found something, the problem still existed. I even thought that by upgrading to Lion would resolve any issues that I have with my MBP wireless connectivity issue. After upgrading to buying a new router, new printer and upgrading to Lion; the wireless dropping issue still remains unresolved! I know there are several hundred in not thousands of people who are having the same problem so what are we supposed to do?
When my 1st MBP was replaced in 2010 I had to stop working because I was diagnosed with "Failed Back Surgical Syndrome" and was in the process of applying for disability. Something in the back of my mind said that I needed to purchase Apple Care for this new replacement however I had used all of my savings & retirement to sustain life for me and my family that there was nothing for Apple Care. If it weren't for my church and family I am not sure what I would do during the 18 months of no income while waiting for a decision only to receive an appeal until I findly stood in front of an Administrative Law Judge who heard my case and granted me disability. Besides there was no way I could ask anyone for money to purchase a warranty for a top of the line laptop while the country was falling off an economical cliff.
I broke down and called Apple Support and was told that I qualified for technical assistance regarding the upgrade to Lion a few weeks ago. The tech on the phone had me run some disk utility tests and had me repair permissions which she said could be the cause of the problem. I willingly went along with her in hopes that this was indeed the fix. However, within 10 minutes of hanging up the phone my MBP began to drop it's wireless connection to my new HP printer and also the Internet. Hence my question above is what I am really looking to have answered! What is the fix to this problem that so many people are having issues with? I couldn't afford to purchase Apple Care back in 2010 and I can't afford to purchase a new 2011 machine today if that truly is the fix!
I will be disabled for the remainder of my life and I have grown dependent upon my computer to stay in touch with friends and colleges from work. I worked for the IT Group at Wynn Resorts and I can say that the type of service Appple is providing it's customers is not what I learned over the past 25 years with Mr. Wynn. Why can't Apple get the simple concept that it's customers are it's life line and keeps them in business. I need help and I don't know what to do nor where to turn. It would be different if Apple acknowledged the issue and said they were working on it however they aren't. I plead to Apple to help me fix my notebook so I can stay connected to the outside world vs. couped up inside my home.
Best Regards,
Scott LeavittI am simply lookig for some help not an argument. I am not an RF specialist however have setup a few wireless networks in my tenure at Wynn Resorts. I fully agree that wireless networking is an art and a science however the powers that be in Network Land have toughted wireless networking is the easiest and quickest way to get two computers to talk with one another. As I previously said I have already turned one (1) MBP in for this problem and Apple decided to replace it because they could not fix the problem with my particular MBP. This MBP was running Leopard when the problems started
I am having a hard time believeing that there are several other devicces in my home that depend on a wireless network to operate and my MBP is the only one having an issue. I took this a step further and decided to see what would happen if I tried to connect wirelessly via Fusion. In Windows 7 I am able to print and scan to my hearts content without any issues. I am able to browse the internet as much as I want. I close Fusion and try to connect to my printer via wireless and nothing.
In order to get Apple to help do I need to get a Network Analyzer and capture packets when I have these problems? Out of the 1000 + posts is there a consolidation of which answer is the best? BTW I am accessing the internet via a wireless connection using Fusion and Windows 7.
In response to Linc's comments, I will look at the router specifications however I did not qualify that these devices are not using the wireless connection at the same time. Right now I would guess there are maybe two (2) or three (3) at the most that are actively transmitting / receiving information. -- Thanks -
Wondershare's iDraft for $2.99 will not update crashing issues due to 4.2!
Wondershare will not update their iDraft App, on the App Store, for compatibility issues due to iOS 4.2! iDraft costs $2.99, and should be pulled from the app store. An app should not be sold, until the issue is addressed. It's wrong, and I want to see some progress, instead of emails saying that we are heading in a different direction... Then return email back saying that we are now working on the issue, and I could get a discount on Wondershare apps...

I have late 2009 iMac with 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Mountain Lion. I'm having browser crashing issues (Safari, Chrome, and Firefox are all crashing.) Could someone take a look at this Safari Problem Report and let me know if there's anything I can do. Thanks in advance.

If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model. Memory that is either slower or faster than specified may be incompatible.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
