POP account creation in Mail 4.5

I am trying to set up a pop account for retrieving e-mails with Mail 4.5, and Mail forces me to create a IMAP account while I need POP. How can one unselect or deactivate the "smart" account configuration, or manually create an account?

Folks,
I found out the solution to my own problem: when prompted for account creation, one has to type a WRONG password, which then makes a next screen appear with a pop-up menu from which one can choose IMAP, POP and a couple other options.

    Btinternet being your internet service provider? If I'm correct, have you followed their directions:

  • How do I change the default POP account directory (~/Library/Mail)?

    With Mail 1.0 in 10.3.9, I could change the default ~/Library/Mail storage location for a POP account. I did this by setting up an account and in the advanced tab choosing a path.
    With Mail 2.0 in 10.4.4, when going through the guided account setup, the directory option is no longer available. But the option still shows greyed-out, so I assume it's possible to change.

    How do I get my POP account to store somewhere else?
    G4 1.25 MDD   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    hmmm.. I've been complaining about this to the engineers for over a year. The storage location should be chooseable as should there also be a backup feature (as in Addressbook and iCal).
    for those that want to change this... it would be cool for someone to write a non cryptic, complete 1,2,3 stepped procedure.
    That is.. exactly what do you change to what in the mail user preference file? And what do you use to change it.. text edit? "[ ]" heretofor = folder
    I would like to change my Mail storage location to the my [Documents] . Using Text Edit, I went into my user [Library], to [Preferences] and opened the com.apple.mail.plist and changed all the ~/Library/mail storage locations to ~/Documents/Mail
    lastly I moved the [Mail] that was in the [Library] to my [Documents].
    Didn't work. Restarting Mail got me into the guided set a new account (and as far as I can see there IS no way of not taking the guided set up as alledged above). There must be something, some built-in direction other than in the [Preferences] defaulting mail to be saved in the [Library] folder
    If someone has done this and been successful.. a 1,2,3.. list would be apprecaited... and please don't leave any details out. Thanks

  • Gmail pop account wont send mail

    I set up a gmail account sucessfully, recieving mail was fine but when it came to sending i kept getting a message saying 'port 465 has been timed out'. I changed the port number a few different times to recommended ports but with no avail. I decided to delete this account and try setting up again as i may have done something wrong. I now can't recieve or send mail.
    What is the correct port for a Gmail pop account?
    Why has resetting it made things worse, as they ended up being the same setting as before?

    I use port 25 with no problems for POP usage.
    The only problem i have encountered is sending files over 5mb using POP, gmail rejects them. If I spilt it into two smaller files it is happy.
    No problem receiving big files.

  • Can't add Gmail (POP) accounts to Apple Mail

    I noticed a day before the 10.5.7 update that my existing gmail accounts in Mail suddenly stopped retrieving mail, giving "a server not responding" message. So I delete the accounts and try to add again. And again, pop server not responding. This was all on 10.5.6 mind you, and yes all my settings are correct under google settings.
    10.5.7 was released and I seen in the notes that there was a problem with gmail and Apple Mail in the past (no problems for me but I only used POP). So, like always, I repair disk permissions, download the full combo update and install. After install, like always, I repair disk permissions again before doing anything else.
    Same thing. Can't add my POP gmail accounts to Apple Mail. POP server not responding

    I have just experienced the same issue with a gmail account I setup in Mail when I bought my first Macbook 2 years ago. I've never had any problems with the gmail POP server before, until last night July 26th 09. Then suddenly a couple of minutes after successfully retrieving the emails as usual, it tried again and failed, asking for the password. I entered the password, but still came back saying POP server not responding.
    I did some updates yesterday, but nothing more than the one for the pro apps. I'm completely up to date with all Leopard updates. Also I've double checked that all is working with my gmail account and settings; no change in settings or password were made.
    Do I need to delete the account in Mail and recreate it from scratch, then, is that the only answer when this error seems to occur out of the blue?

  • Can't setup pop account and all mail deleted from server!!

    Trying to set up a mail account as pop. But Mail is determined to set it as imap.
    I've humoured it and gone through the process.
    After clicking 'create account' it gives the message that it's downloading 500+ messages. Once it's finished, nothing is in the inbox.
    To make matters worse, every single email has been deleted from the server. I do have a backup of my important emails but if this is something which is not isolated to me, then I feel sorry for anyone who does not have a backup.
    So...
    Is there a way to manually setup my account with settings of my choosing?
    Or, is this just a case of Apple deciding whats best for me and resistance is futile?
    Cheers

    I'm not sure what Mail version you're using and you can't change an existing IMAP account to POP, but you can add a new pop account in Mail 6.0 in a round-about way.
    When you're setting up the account it will only try it as IMAP, so in the first segment where it asks for the password, purposely enter the wrong password and click continue.  An error message will result, then click continue again and you will see a new window with a pull-down menu to select POP.  From there you can manually fill out the rest according to your server's settings. (Don't forget to put in the correct password this time.)
    In your case, I'm not sure how your messages left your server, but if you have webmail for the account you can check the trash there.  Also, you will have to delete the IMAP version of the email account before you can use the address for the new POP account setup.
    Personally, I use IMAP on my iPhone and POP in Mail for a more manual control of my accounts, so I know how you feel.  Hope this helps.

  • Hostgator POP account configuration in Mail (Mountain Lion)

    Hi,
    I have a little problem with configuring a Hostgator POP account in Mail (Mountain Lion).
    The following info is from Hostgator:
    Secure SSL/TLS Settings:
    Username: [email protected]
    Password: mypassword
    Incoming Server: gator4113.hostgator.com
    - POP3 Port: 995
    Outgoing Server: gator4113.hostgator.com
    - SMTP Port: 465
    Authentication is required for POP3 and SMTP.
    I have manually configured the account in Mail, but where shall I enter the
    Incoming Server's Port 995?
    At the end of the Advanced Tab I could enter a port (is by default set to 110)
    but according to the help file this is ALSO for SENDING messages. (???)
    Thanks for any help!

    I tried this, but still no screen appears where I could enter the incoming port.
    I found another forum post regarding this question:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6507302 => Csound1 wrote:
    "the path you provided (mail>preferences>advanced) allows you to change the incoming port"
    I tried it, and it seems to work!
    As I wrote in the Mail help they wrote "Specify the port numbers to use to send messages",
    BUT at the top, under "Advanced accounts preferences" it says
    "Use Advanced accounts preferences to set options related to retrieving messages"!!
    So it seems it's really for receiving/incoming mails. (Where else should it be possible to edit that port?)

  • One POP account cannot retrieve mail

    We have one mac out of three that cannot retrieve mail from an earthlink pop account Two macs (20" imac intel core 2 duo running 10.4.8 and 12" ibook G4 running 10.3.9) can retrieve mail for the account in question from the earthlink server without difficulty. Mail can also be retrieved via WebMail. the 17" imac intel core duo running 10.4.8 cannot retrieve mail. Mail asks for the password over and over. The settings are the same on all three Macs. Connection doctor can connect to the smtp server using the same setup without difficulty but cannot connect to the POP server. We've tried deleting and re-entering the account. We've tried the Key chain repair tool. We tried deleting the pop password from key chain. I've dragged stuff out of the preferences folder and on and on. Nothing has worked. I even tried re-installing the 10.4.8 update. I tried re-installing Mail from the startup disk and then running the update. Nothing. We're not using a firewall. We use an Airport network but, again, all the settings are the same for all three computers.
    Any suggestions.

    Go to System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
    Also, try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc., and see whether that makes a difference.
    The Mac OS X 10.4.7 Update introduced connection issues as a result of (according to the documentation) “Mail now supports connecting to mail servers through a SOCKS proxy”. If that’s the problem, you must go to System Preferences > Network and disable the SOCKS Proxy in the network configuration used to connect to the Internet, if it’s enabled -- I don’t think you would be able to send if that was the problem, though.

  • Cannot send attachments in Mail using .mac account, pop account is fine!

    Within my Mail.app, I have 2 accounts: one is a .mac account, the other a pop account.
    When I send attachments (jpg always and sometimes pdf) with the .mac account, they do not get encoded properly and my recipients cannot view them -- or they can view, say, 10% of the photo.
    When I send the same attachments with the pop account, and within the same Mail.app, I do NOT have this problem.
    Furthermore, if I send the attachment from my .mac webmail, I do NOT have the problem.
    Does Mail.app have a problem with attachments sent via IMAP accounts?
    I have tried Repairing Permissions, deleting the outbox.mbx (and emptying the trash).
    Does anyone have any other suggestions? This is driving me crazy.
    I am running Mail 2.0.5 on Tiger 10.4.3
    Thanks a lot in advance, Neil

    Hello Neil.
    Does Mail.app have a problem with attachments sent via IMAP accounts?
    None that I'm aware of.
    The Mail.app uses MIME 1.0 for message/attachment encoding (which is the internet standard) for all email accounts.
    Is your POP account and the SMTP server used for the account provided by your ISP used for connecting to the internet?
    If so, try selecting/using your ISP's SMTP server (the same SMTP server used to send mail via your ISP's POP account) to send mail via your .Mac account as a test.

  • Where is Sent mail stored in POP account?

    OK;
    I should know this and Wikipedia doesn't explain it, but in using Mail under a POP account where "leave mail on server for x time " is selected, are both the incoming and outgoing mail saved on server or only the incoming? I ask because I am trying to restore a POP account using a TM backup that is a few days old. I know the incoming mail will be there for the time since the backup because I checked "leave on server", but will the Sent mail be there also?

    Mail that you send is stored in the Sent Messages.mbox folder for the account, in your Library/Mail folder. It is not stored on the server.

  • Outlook to Mail (POP account)

    Hey guys, recently I decided to make a switch from Outlook 2011 to Mail, and there's a quick question I'd like to ask.
    One of my mail accounts in Outlook was a POP account which I already closed on the server. Prior to closing it, I downloaded all its mails to my Outlook so I currently have that entire POP account in "On My Computer" section in Outlook.
    I would just like to know how to import this POP account into my Mail app so that I could access it at any time? I had no problem with my other (IMAP) accounts because they synced by themselves, but moving that POP account is a bit confusing.
    Message was edited by: goldyn chyld

    Ok I found a workaround for it. What I did was install Entourage 2008, then I created a separate folder on my desktop for each of my Outlook Yahoo POP mail folders and drag-n-dropped them from Outlook to my desktop. Then I created folders with the same names in my Entourage and drag-n-dropped the folders from my desktop into the same folders that I created in Entourage one by one.
    Finally, I opened my Mail app and clicked Mailbox > New Mailbox and selected "ON MY MAC." Then created a folder and used the File > Import Mailboxes option to import everything from Entourage. A bit of work, but it did the trick so now I have the POP mail I had in my Outlook in my Mail app.

  • Pop accounts and .Mac with Mail system

    Iv been trying to learn how to use my iBooks 'mail' system with both my Gmail and .Mac accounts. But, keep coming up with more questions than I can find answers to.
    1. Why doesn't mail that I receive or send from my 'mail' programme show up when I go to .Mac and open the mail there? Shouldn't the mail be in both?
    2. Same question for folders that I created in both .Mac and the 'mail' system.
    3. When using the 'mail' system with POP accounts does deleting mail automatically also delete the mail in the original POP account. In other words if I have the 'mail' system set to delete POP mail for a Gmail account does that also delete the copy over in Gmail?
    Just trying to figure out how the 'mail' system works in relation to if I use .Mac. Also, in relation to Gmail. I'm learning that when I'm in .Mac things aren't quite the same.
    Thank for the help in advance.

    You can access multiple accounts with the Mail.app and each account has its own webmail access that does not reflect all mailboxes available with an email client such as the Mail.app. It is impossible for webmail access with your .Mac account to reflect your Gmail, Yahoo or any other non-.Mac account mailboxes or any user created "On My Mac" location mailboxes which are stored locally on the hard drive.
    The same when accessing your Gmail or Yahoo account via webmail access using a browser. Doing so will reflect your Gmail or Yahoo account mailboxes only.
    When logged in to your .Mac account via webmail access using a browser, it will reflect your .Mac account's inbox mailbox in Mail and any other .Mac server stored mailboxes in Mail which are located under your .Mac account named icon in the mailboxes drawer only. It will not reflect the mailboxes for any other account, any imported mailboxes or user created "On My Mac" location mailboxes.
    > Sounds like what you're saying that in order for both .Mac and my mail.app to sync they both have to be marked ".Mac account" and not "on my Mac". That way they both operate from the main Mac server. Am I heading in the right direction?
    Not exactly.
    The Mail.app mailboxes drawer includes the following in this order:
    * Inbox
    * Drafts
    * Sent
    * Trash
    * Junk (only if Junk Mail is set to automatic)
    * Smart Mailboxes (only if you have created and are using any Smart Mailboxes)
    * Imported Mailboxes (only if you have imported any mailboxes)
    * User Created "On My Mac" location mailboxes.
    * .Mac account named icon
    The Inbox mailbox for each account is located under Inbox in the mailboxes drawer regardless the account type. Open Inbox in the mailboxes drawer by selecting the black triangle beside it pointing it down to reveal the account named Inbox mailbox for each account. Selecting an account named Inbox mailbox in the mailboxes drawer reveals messages received by that account only in the message list. Selecting Inbox in the mailboxes drawer reveals a blended Inbox mailbox for all accounts.
    Your .Mac account's Inbox mailbox in the mailboxes drawer is synchronized with the server which is the same behavior with any IMAP account. Messages in your Gmail or Yahoo account's Inbox mailbox are downloaded from the server, not synchronized with the Gmail or Yahoo servers and the same with any POP account. It is impossible for your .Mac account to synchronize the Inbox mailbox for a non-.Mac account.
    Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Mailbox Behaviors tab for your .Mac account preferences, if you don't store Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk messages on the server with your .Mac account when using Mail, the account's Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk mailboxes will be available under the Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk categories in the mailboxes drawer. All account mailboxes under Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk in the mailboxes drawer are stored locally on the hard drive.
    Open your .Mac account named icon in the mailboxes drawer. All mailboxes under your .Mac account named icon represent/refelect your .Mac account server stored mailboxes when accessing the account via webmail EXCEPT for the account's Inbox mailbox which is located under Inbox in the mailboxes drawer. If you don't select store Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk messages on the server under the Mailbox Behaviors tab for the account preferences, besides your .Mac account's Inbox mailbox, no other mailboxes are and can be synchronized with the server except for the mailboxes located under your .Mac account named icon in the mailboxes drawer.
    When creating a new mailbox, you can select "On My Mac" as the location which is stored locally on the hard drive and will not be synchronized with the server or any server.
    Or you can select your .Mac account as the location which will create a server stored mailbox which will be located under your .Mac account named icon in the mailboxes drawer and will be available on the server (via webmail access) and kept synchronized with the server.
    No other mailboxes in Mail will be available on the server with your .Mac account via webmail access and this is the same behavior with any email client such as the Mail.app.
    > Is this something I should ring up Applecare on to make it simpler to make them match? Or would changing them all to ".Mac account" and the server solve the issue?
    Calling AppleCare will be a waste of time because your problem is a lack of knowledge and understanding only. You can't change your Gmail or Yahoo email accounts to a .Mac account with Mail or with any email client since these are separate/different accounts.

  • Help! Can I recover mails from a deleted pop account?

    I deleted an old POP account from my mail and it promptly removed all e-mails from my inbox. Can I recover these e-mails in anyway?

    Hi Jinogen, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Depending on how old the messages are and what time interval you have set to remove from server (Mail menu >> Preferences >> Accounts >> Advanced)
    some/all may still be on the server.
    Try using mail2web to download them from the server. EDIT: Or email to your new Mail account.
