POP E-Mail

What are the best settings for pop e-mail on the iPhone?
The one thing I don't like is that you have three options with pop for deleting from the server:
1. Never
2. Seven Days
3. When removed from Inbox
I think there should be another option:
Prompt: This would ask from server or hand held (this is how the BB worked and it was a great feature).
So as it is now, if I don't want an e-mail on the phone but still on the server I have to change the setting to never and delete it from the iPhone and then change it back to When removed from Inbox so if I get spam it won't be there when I finally open up my e-mail on my PC.
Are there any plans to add this to the iPhone?

tsaunders,
The best recommendation for POP accounts is to leave the iPhone set to "Never" and specify a time period on one main client (typically your computer) of which the message will be removed from the server.
Many people prefer the IMAP protocol over POP as with IMAP, it allows you to manage your messages from the server directly; if you delete a message from your iPhone, it's get delete from the server automatically and never makes it to your PC. The same holds true when you delete a message from your PC, it won't make it to your iPhone. IMAP is a more modern protocol and is optimized for use with multiple clients (i.e; your iPhone, your PC, etc.). POP much older was originally intended for use with one client at a time, as that was what was expected during the time.
Here is a good article on the topic: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/mac32.html
With that said, you're always welcome to submit any feature requests for the iPhone here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
Hope this helps,

  • Pop 3 mail account

can anybody help me? i've set my mail up and its been working fine for around three months but now when i go into mail it keeps saying for no reason my pop 3 mail account has rejected my password. i havn't changed any settings . thanks in advance. JB
    macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If you're getting those pop-up alerts that say you need to re-enter your password, I get them too. I think it's a problem with the mail server, not your computer.

  • Pop e-mail setup

May seem like a dumb question but I originally setup my iphone to use my Pop e-mail account and it worked great, but I quickly realized that it locked me out of checking e-mail through Outlook on my laptop. Is there a way to utilize both options at the same time? I ended up creating a gmail account for the time being to avoid the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The error message I was receiving from my server was that another program already had access to my e-mail account...Obviously.

    Hello everyone
I wanted to follow up and close this discussion since I've figured out the problem:
On the I-Phone I set the option " Delete from server --> NEVER"
I did this because I wanted it like this. But since my hoster combines all the 4 different e-mail addresses in one inbox, I received the mails 4 times because it was kept on the server.
I only figured this out because I reinstalled windows and in Outlook the option to leave it on the server was set to all 4 e-mail addresses as well as a standard therefore the same pattern was shown in Outlook.
So what I finally did to resolve the problem is just setting up one single account on the I-Phone instead of four. I tested it with sending individual mails to each e-mail address and all of them were received by the I-Phone until I downloaded them through Outlook on the PC.
Thanks to all for the help.

  • Web Browsers connect to internet, software update fails, pop for mail fails

A few days ago I was not able to pop my mail down to my mac from Cox and gmail they both failed to connect. Then i tried os x software up date and it says i am not connected to the internet. Itunes will not update pod casts either. Yahoo chat wont load either. There must be a port blocked or something in the OS on this mac. Proxies are at not set, fire walI is not on. I tried deleting network prefs, and some others i found in other posts. None of this worked. Safari works fine. All my other computers, pc's and mac's work fine through the same router and cable modem. I am about ready to format and reinstall OS X. Any ideas before i go to this extreme.....
oh i just found it little snitch was blocking ports... so i learned something tonight

  • Help getting POP e-mail client to behave

I just moved over to an iPhone after years of being an Android user for many years.  The only thing I feel like I'm missing is getting the mail client to behave the way it did on Android.  On Android I used a program called K-9 Mail and it did an excellent job of synchronizing the inbox on the pjhone with my POP e-mail server.  Here's how it behaved:
Download messages from the server to the phone, they stayed on the server but were marked as read.  This is standard and seems to be behaving the same.
Delete a message on the phone.  It was deleted on the server immediately.
Delete a message on the server or download messages from the server to my PC which deleted them from the server, they were deleted from the phone on the next synch.
I can't seem to get this level of synchronization with any iPhone clients.  I've used the stock Mail client as well as tried Sparrow.  Can someone tell me if I'm just missing a setting somewhere?  Thanks very much.

Not sure how this was done with your android since what you are asking does not fall under the standards for a POP account. Nothing is synced with the server with a POP account. When accessing a POP account with more than one email client, new email downloaded and read with one email client will be downloaded as unread mail with the other email client and vice-versa.
If the email account provider supports IMAP account access, I would make use of that.

  • POP E-mail account password

My POP mail account is not working. I've had this computer a long time and I intend to get a new one
because it's so out of date but in the mean time I need to get this problem fixed. The problem is with the
password. I NEVER had to type it in. It was always in there in mail preferences/accounts (all in asterisks*****)
For reasons I can't figure out, the password is no longer there. In keychain access there is no
indication of any mail account and password. When I click on "get mail" I get a prompt that asks for
a password. I have no idea what it is! My e-mail server is Time Warner Cable. They have no idea
what I'm talking about. I opened a g mail account just so I can do some e-mailing but I hate the format
and I want to continue to send and receive e-mails at my POP account and Time Warner e-mail address
as I have many business cards with that address on it. How can I fix the Pop e-mail account password
problem? Should I contact Apple and pay to ask them a question? I'm really perplexed. Even though
"mail" is not in my keychain access list, I tried to look at other passwords for other things and a prompt
asks me for a "keychain access password". I never had one! But that's a different issue. For now I'll settle for
a solution to my POP password problem.

Thank u for your suggestions. I'm the only one who uses this computer but I do have another mail account with g-mail which I only opened after the POP account failed. I repaired the keychain access to no avail but it did say that there was "no problem" with the chain. I reset the chain and I still can't send or receive e-mails from my POP account. I called Time Warner cable and they said they thought there could be a problem on their end and they
were checking it out. But the problem remains that even if they fix the problem that is rejecting my e-mail password, I now have no e-mail password to type in. It used to be saved in Preferences and now it's no longer there. If I can't retrieve the password from somewhere (it's not on my keychain access list) I don't know how to get the password or create a new one. As a result of resetting the keychain I now have a keychain access password. But there's no POP account or any mail app in the keychain list to use it with.

  • Using pop e-mails with BB curve 8530

Hello I need a little help. Had a BB in the past but never needed to use it with my 4 pop e-mail accounts. Just switched from HTC Snap to a new BB curve 8530 and it does not seem to do what I need it to. On the snap it would check for new messages from all 4 pop accounts hourly and when doing so any new unread messages on the pop server would go to the snap phone and any deletions that were made on the pop server were removed from the snap phone also. I am sure BB has a way to do this but I am not seeing where or how to set this up. So far it seems I have to delete it on my BB to delete it off both but it will not take deletions from the pop and remove them from the BB. Please help, I have so many e-mails I have to manage and it is making me want to go back to the Snap since this is causing a lot more work.
Also, is it normal for PDF files to take a while to load and become clear to view as e-mail attachments? I seem to be waiting a while in comparison to the snap I had prior.
    Much thanks!!!

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Concerning reconciliation between server and the BB, that will be governed by this KB. In nearly all cases, it sounds like you should be able to have 2-way reconciliation of deleted items...the KB includes a link to another article that discusses how to properly configure for that.
Concerning how long it takes to open and render an attachment, your prior device was likely downloading the entire attachment at the time it downloaded the email. BB's do not retrieve the attachment until you request it, so you must wait while it performs that download. I would guess that the actual time it takes either device to obtain the attachment is the same -- it's just that with the BB you are there watching it and therefore noticing it.
    Best!

  • Popping sent mail / blackberry

    hi there,
tried to search the boards for this topic but was unable to find any info; if there's already a thread please let me know...
so here's my issue: i just got a blackberry and have been sending a lot of emails from it. unlike sending mail from the mac mail program, the sent emails don't go into my sent box in mac mail. they do however go into my yahoo sent box (from where i pop my mail into mac mail).
aside from manually moving the sent mail into the inbox from the yahoo mail website and then letting it pop into my mac mail inbox then moving it into the sent box, is there an easier way to do this?
i have pocketmac software, but unsure if this can do that...
    thanks much.

Looks like perhaps a failure to decode Base 64 Content Transfer Encoding. Maybe stripping of headers that tell Mail to do that by server somewhere along the line? No idea how to fix.

  • How do i get keychain off my computer!?!?! Ive tried absolutely everything, keychain won't reset itself. Ive done everything anyone has suggested in apple support. Keep getting pop ups, mail won't work any more, i can't do ANYTHING.

Every time i log into my computer, i get bombarded with pop ups asking me for numerous passwords, i enter the CORRECT ones in for my email accounts and they keep coming up, i cant do anything to get this off. Keychains suck i dont know why anyone would have made these.
I go to the keychain preferences in finder and i try to unlock the local items keychain but it wont because i dont know the password, ive tried any password it could possibly be and it wont go through. I also cant reset it becasue it says "invalid aegument" every time i try to do that in First Aid.
Everything anyone has said to do wont help. I cant even get my mail accounts to come online but they still work in my phone. I even downloaded the newest version 10.9 or whatever and it doesnt work. My mail accounts are all screwed up, so is icloud, and messages app i cant even use it. ive restarted my computer a million times so dont suggest that either.
Oh and for those of you who are going to tell me to go to /library/keychain or anything like that, my computer says that the file or folder doestn exist.

Please follow the directions in this support article. If there's no change, see below.
Back up all data. Open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the Keychain box. You'll be prompted to keep or delete the keychain items. Choose to delete and confirm. Then re-check the box. Follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set up iCloud Keychain on an additional device. Test.

  • How to set up two POP e-mail accounts using the same POP and SMTP servers

I have an e-mail address based on a domain I purchased which is based on my company name. Now retired, I have purchased a new domain with a simpler, personalised name. My original e-mail account uses the incoming (POP3) and outgoing (SMTP) mail servers operated by my ISP; mail.btinternet.com.
I have set up a new account on my PC in Microsoft Outlook, and have successfully sent and received emails using the new e-mail address taken from my new domain name.
I have now tried to mirror this on my iPhone, but every time I enter all the relevant data for the new e-mail address, user name, password, mail servers etc., and then press 'save', I get a pop-up which says: "xxxx" is Already Added  This POP account has already been added to your iPhone. ("xxxx" is the name given to my original e-mail account).  Nowhere have I input "xxxx" in the course of setting up the new account.
I need both accounts operational during an extended switch-over period as I alert everyone to the e-mail change over. Can anyone suggest a solution to this problem?

What targeting the Mail.app preference file, do the following:
Quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop.
Note: Moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
The only exception to this is if you have a .Mac account which will be recreated automatically and/or if you created an email account as part of the computer setup assistant when first turning on the computer when new.
Launch Mail and decline any prompt to import mailboxes. After re-entering all email account information, the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folders and mailbox files at Home > Library > Mail.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully rediscovered, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old com.apple.mail.plist file from the Desktop.
Test if this resolves the problem.

  • Syncing Outlook for Mac with a hotmail pop accountto 'mail' on iphone, ipad and ipod

I'm using Outlook for Mac 2011, with a hotmail account set up as a pop account to my outlook inbox.  I also have that same hotmail account set up on my iphone, ipad and ipod.  Is there a way to sync my e-mail between Outlook for Mac and the 'mail' on my other devices, so that when I delete an email on my computer, it deletes on all devices?
I'm not so tech savvy and am happy to provide any additional information but am not sure where to start!  I would appreciate any help you can give me.
    Thank you

First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.
This user tip might help you understand how accounts work with Contacts (Address Book).

  • Problem with yahoo! SMTP POP server mail account on new upgraded iphone 4.3.5

    PLEASE HELP!
I am a California AT&T wireless customer with a new iphone 4 on the iOS 4.3.5 upgraded system and suddenly I am unable to successfully add my Yahoo! email account and have it configured to send/receive my emails.  I was able to successfully add my gmail and Microsoft exchange server account, but only problems with the Yahoo!  I checked all the settings, have done several add/delete accounts, restore network settings, and retry/reboots, to no avail.  This is a seriously annoying problem, it worked with the pre-upgraded older version fine without any problems ever.  I continually get the same error message:  SERVER UNAVAILABLE, please try again later.
I know this error is inaccurate because all my other email accounts work fine as well as Safari and all other internet connections and apps.  It is not a phone thing, it is some yahoo and upgraded software incompatibility issue that no one seems to have resolved yet.
This is a SMTP PUSH POP account, and I have literally tried everything.  I have tried all the fixes while connected to wifi, and then tried them just via my 3G cell network connection.  I read on a message board about turning on/off SSL, could someone tell me how to do that?  When I go into to:
settings>mail accounts>outgoing mail server SMTP>Yahoo! SMTP, everything is grayed out and I can't change any ports or SSL.
When I try to manually add a server, which I was told was a fix, I don't know what to type into the host name.  Does anyone know how to help?
I have seen this problems on numerous message boards, even in the UK.  I contacted Apple Support, with no success in resolving this problem, had an open case for several days contacted several supervisor personnel, all advised me to contact Yahoo! who do not offer customer care via telephone only online, and nothing there helped to resolve my issue.
    PLEASE, PLEASE HELP!
    THANKS

Yahoo's servers have been having problems off and on now for close to a month if not longer. There's not much you can do about it except talk to Yahoo, which is kind of like beating your head against a wall.  They've had problems like this off and on since as far back as the mid 90's. I gave up on them long ago. Just convert to something else and dump them. It's not worth the headache.

  • Excessive Data from un-opened attachments on POP iPhone Mail

    Hi there,
This is my first post so any help would be much appreciated.
I am  having problems with the data usage on my iPhone 4S.
Using the Dataman app, I have been able tp pinpoint why my data (again today) jumpes 30mb in one go.
I think its to do with one of my POP mail accounts. Whenever I recieve an email on this account with an attachment, I dont even need to go into the actual email and it will still download every attachment in that mail. What is worse, is that if I dont complete the download and close Mail, when i open up Mail again it will re-download it again! This mean it takes double the data! So today for instance, I noticed 3 emails with attachments enter my POP mailbox (Provider is 1&1 UK). I did'nt open any of the emails, just let the main screen load up. I then looked at dataman and saw the data usage jump up by 10mb. I then closed the Mail app. I then re-opened the Mail app and this time it jumped another 12mb. So I closed it again, and then i opened the Mail app AGAIN and it jumped another 15mb! This is insane! Something is wrong with the data capture here....
For one i didnt open up the emails or attachments - why did it take some much data (58mb for today currently) when all i did was open the mail app three times???? I'm looking into setting up an IMAP account and deleting the POP account - does anyone think this would make a difference?
How can i stop this happening?
Thanks for your help in advance :]

I'm experiencing this as well. My iPhone uploads nearly 20MB every 20 minutes or so on the dot. The only thing that I could think of is that my email has been hanging and not updating to gmail correctly when I delete an email. It will continually try to process deleting the specific deleted email until it times out and tries again 20 minutes later. I have to force quit Mail to get it to stop. I'm not sure if this issue is limited to only gmail, but in all of my google searches, gmail with Apple's mail app (mobile or desktop) are the constant factors that result in excessive cellular data UPLOADS.
To be clear, my excessive data usage is not from downloads, it is solely from uploads!
Now I just need to figure out what is causing it to hang and keep trying to update every 20 minutes.

  • Pop 3 mail on iPad

I'm having trouble setting up my POP3 e-mail account on my iPad 3...I know all the settings I've entered are correct (verified with provider) but I receive the message the "secureserver.net" is not responding.  I enabled SSL and have shut down, rebooted, etc. several times to no avail.  Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how was it resolved.

Apple first-line support stated the problem needed to be in the Mail Support.
I described the phenomenon to Mail support and he stated that POP was seemingly acting like IMAP. I replied back with a resounding, yes. He just sent through the steps again to ensure that my configuration was acceptable, and I confirmed again the way in which I used POP between my devices. He stated he was going to transfer me to the next line support.
The last line of support stated he was going to record this event with Engineering to determine if was really a bug. It took some convincing that it was an iOS bug but I fact is, this did not occur with iOS 5.x. Moveover, the Mail App should not delete messages from my devices if the remote POP account does not contain any messages.
In the meantime, I did delete the POP accounts on the iPad and re-created within iOS6. Should not matter, but it is worth a try. I will test this later today.

  • Help setting up POP in Mail

I just got my new iMac today and I'm trying to set up our two mail accounts. So far, I have the accounts set up and I can receive emails on both accounts, but my first problem is:
I'm getting 2-3 emails that are all the same
and the next problem is I cannot send mail from either account. The POP server and the SMTP server are the same: mail.beyondbb.com. When I try to send mail, I get the following error:
"Cannot send message using server mail.beyondbb.com. Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your network settings."
Then it gives me the alternative severs to choose from... one is a .mac and the other is the mail.beyondbb.com: with the email address next to it.
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong and why I am getting duplicates??
    Thanks in advance!!

Have you taken a look at the information on postfix.org./Documents
Actually the samples there are enough to get this up and running if you don't end up making the same bummers I did.
