POP email account is not retrieving messages unless I launch mail.

Messages used to come through to my phone while screen was locked. Now I have to launch the email application for the phone to check with the server. I don't know if I may have changed some setting.
"Fetch" and "Push" are not explained in the  manual.

For POP mail you must have Fetch enabled if you want mail to be retrieved when the Mail app is not open. Push is for email accounts that support Notifications. Examples are gmail, iCloud mail, Hotmail, yahoo and AOL. If you have one or more email providers that support Push and you enable it then your POP mail will also be retrieved when you receive mail on the Push account.

Yesterday I uploaded Yosemite 10.10.2 thinking it was fixed by now. In Mail, my POP account gets this error message: Mail cannot send your password securely to the server. You can remove this restriction in the Accounts preferences by setting “Allow insecure authentication”, which could put your password at risk.
My provider says it's an Apple issue. The gmail accounts are logging in fine. Any help? Something simple?
    Thanks anyone.

Thanks Csound1. That did work and Mail was able to connect to the internet. Green light status. Is it because of my provider that I may never have had secure connections? Is that an Apple thing or do PCs have the same issues? Appreciate your help. I'll research insecure connections as I am ignorant of the consequences.

  • HELP!!!  I deleted a POP email account w/4000+ messages in it and they disappeared

I have been told all my messages are gone forever but I find that just hard to believe.  If this were a Windows machine I could recover them because it just deletes the first character in the name of the file.  Am I to believe that Apple doesn't have something even remotely similar?
I have been able to recover a few hundred from my iPhone which also had access to the POP account but many years of emails are just not there.
I thought for sure I could delete the account and recreate it as I was making it an IMAP account but I'm having no luck getting most of my life for the past 4 years back.  (And yes, I know, I should have backed up - but I hadn't in over a year.)  Lazy I know so please don't rub it in.
I drove 100 miles to go to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store and that is how I learned to recover the ones on the phone but that was a painfully slow process of doing them pretty much one at a time because I'd select 50 or so and some would be able to be moved and some wouldn't - which was frustrating so I finally just went through and kept the ones that were most important.
Anyone got any good news or ideas for me to try?

This thread is now moot seeing as how I've recovered everything I can and am going to just move on - and back up more often.  ;-)
Apple and Mail need to rewrite that program to include a WARNING MESSAGE when deleting an Account in Mail that says ALL YOUR MESSAGES ARE GOING TO DISAPPEAR NEVER TO RETURN IF YOU DELETE THIS ACCOUNT, SO YOU DANG WELL BETTER HAVE A BACK UP IF YOU WANT TO KEEP ANYTHING BEFORE PRESSING THAT MINUS SYMBOL!  ;-)

  • POP Email Account Not working after update to 1.1.1

After I updated to 1.1.1, I noticed my email wasn't working quite right, so I did a complete restore, and in the process of setting everything back up, I can not get my personal pop email account to work. After creating a new account with the "Other" option, I enter all the correct information, and when I hit "save", I get this message: Secure Connection Failed, Certificate for "Personal" may be invalid.
It then gives me the option to Cancel or Continue, but hitting continue just hangs. Any thoughts? It was working properly before the update, and my desktop client is still connecting and receiving emails, so nothing has changed on my ISP's end.
    Thanks,
    Kenton

Given that other posts mention two prompts: first that "certificate may be invalid" and second "would you like to connect without SSL?" (paraphrase), I decided to hit "continue" on the first dialog and see what happened in my case. After doing so, I was NOT prompted a second time, so it would SEEM that my SSL connection completed normally after all. For others in this circumstance who require/demand SSL, you may want to try continue on the first prompt to see if it just works.
By all appearances, I still have a secure pipe to my email. It's a shame that this prompt and the results of "continue" aren't better at indicating what the actual issue is.
Note that in my case, I'm probably prompted about the certificate because I don't have a globally-signed SSL cert. I am just using one that I created myself and imported into the Mac OS X keychain. This cert was sync'd beautifully (thank you Apple!) to my phone originally, and appears to still be working. A check of the mail prefs on the iphone still show both inbound/outbound mail to have SSL "on" so it doesn't appear to have been disabled by 1.1.1 or by my pressing "Continue".
I believe that this 1.1.1 update was a deep enough update of the OS that it is merely warning me again (in an unfortunately cryptic way) that the certificate is not signed by global cert authorities. I think it did the same thing when I first set up the iPhone (1.0) but hasn't prompted me again like this on any updates since.

    Sorry for the delay...
I did what you've told me, new account and manually copied my files from Time Machine. I had lots of permissions problems, but at the end, almost everything is in order... It seems it had to be with some of the Apple Preferences, but I can't be sure, as most of them were dumped to the trash can.
I still don't have my Mail Rules back, unfortunately, although I did goggled some. It is a pity, as I had around 30 or 40 of them, getting my mail in order to each of its mailboxes, but it is a small price as the rest doesn't show the before syntoms.
    Thanks for the help, anyway!!

Iphone 6Plus will not allow POP email account and cannot print to my wifi printers, I did on my Iphone 5 until I upgraded, can anyone help

I had talked with three people at Apple tech support on the phone, one person in the Apple store in Indianapolis, plus the other places I mentioned. Only the one young man in the Apple store was even able to identify the problem which was the POP vs. IMAP issue. And then like you said he was only able to say he hoped it would be fixed in the next update release. I did call him back this morning and told him about your simple solution, that I had seen it at the Apple forum, and that he might suggest bringing this topic up at the next staff meeting. I also let my Verizon rep know and an agent at Comcast. Something so simple yet it took three days and a lot of frustration to get fixed. Thanks again. You're my hero! ~ Carol Thomas
Also forgot to mention ... I got the iPhone 6 Plus about three weeks ago and did not have this problem. But I did a backup of my iPhone 5S on the computer and then used that backup to restore to my new iPhone. The iPad I did differently and just set it up as a new iPad with no restoring from the old one. That must have made a difference on the phone because it was set up just like the 5S ... as a POP3.

  • POP email account - Will IPhone leave emails on server?

    Hi,
I am a former Blackberry user.
If I set iPhone to retrieve messages from my POP email address, do I have the option of leaving those messages on the server so that I can download them later to my Outlook 2007 via the send and receive option?
Does iPhone delete the emails that it receives from the POP email account? I assume that iPhone just "copies" the emails, like Blackberry.
I just want to make sure that it is like Blackberry, where I can access my emails from iPhone and still have my emails download to Outlook.
    Thank you!

    Dear Allan
My iPhone worked perfectly but yesterday it wouldn't sync with my Mac: it didn't add new entries in my Address Book (I have 1300 and cannot do this by hand!). Eventually I started afresh ... I managed the sync after resetting sync history (all entries on Mac now on iPhone, but new ones on iPhone are now gone)
Furthermore, I set everything re Mail and Safari like it was (I wrote it down the first time I did this and couldn't get it going) but no go: "Could not activate EDGE: You are not subscribed to EDGE". I do not use EDGE [have a POP3 account] - I did set Network to Data Roaming (like the first time) but doesn't work.
    Any suggestions?

  • Can I use a POP email account on an iPhone

I have a POP email account. I use it on my iMac. My Mail settings are to delete emails as soon as I've downloaded them.
Can I set up my email account on my iPhone? Can the two devices synch my email? i.e. if I send an email from my iMac will this email show up in my iPhone sent mailbox / if I delete an email from my phone will it also be deleted from my iMac / will emails sent to me go to both devices?
Remember this isn't an IMAP account with emails residing on a server, but a POP account that neither stores sent or received emails.
    Thanks for any help

POP does not provide for synchronization between clients. Only IMAP or Exchange accounts do that. By default, POP will delete from the server as soon as it's downloaded, meaning that if your computer downloads it, it can not be downloaded to your phone and vice versa. It is possible to configure some POP mail clients not to delete messages from the server after downloading, but not all servers will honor this request.
POP is generally considered obsolete. Especially in the world of mobile devices and multiple computers.
If your email provider does not support IMAP, you may want to look for a new one.
You could conceivably use a free service that supports IMAP, like gmail, to gather in the mail from the mail service you're using now.

  • Q10 Pop Email Account

    Hi guys,
I am a new and proud owner of BB q10.
My first BB so I am not sure if I am correct or not.
I set up my email account as POP & SMTP.
It is working very well. Mails are coming in and going out.
I realized that the mails in my inbox on BB do disappear from time to time without deleting them.
As POP account they should stay there until I delete them manually.
The only thing I have realized is that they do disappear after a certain time (random / or not discovered yet when it happens).
But the only thing is that this disappearance happens some time after I have downloaded the mails on my laptop (POP).
    My questions:
Are the mails deleted from BB or not visible and in some other folder?
    Why are they deleted?
Is this phenomena planned and OK?
    Can I changed it?
    Many thanks for your support.

    Hi mcklee,
After testing this on my own device, I've managed to get the same errors with my Telus POP account. I was finally able to get it set up using the server settings located in the following link, but outgoing emails would not send, even when I was connected to my Telus home internet.
    http://telus.com/content/help/internet/email/article.jsp?categoryId=windows-8&subcategoryId=howto&ar...
So it would appear that this is indeed an issue with the BlackBerry 10.1 OS. I will see if I can get additional assistance for this.
In the meantime, I did try setting up my account via IMAP as well, and I was unable to replicate the issue where the messages are getting marked as unread as soon as they come in. My suggestion for that is to delete the account from the device, restart your Q10, then try to add the account back again.
And here is one final suggestion, which is partially the route I took with my own Telus email account. Create a new Hotmail or Outlook.com account, then set up send/receive privileges to your Telus email account. This will allow you access to your Telus email account and will show messages as coming from your Telus email address, but in reality, everything will go through the Outlook.com servers. Once you have your new Hotmail/Outlook.com email account set up, go to More Mail Settings (under the gear icon menu), then Your Email Accounts and Add a Send and Receive Email account. Once you have this all set up, set that as your Default "From" Address and that is the email address people will see when you send emails from your phone. You can then set it up on all of your devices using your new Hotmail/Outlook.com credentials.
I hope that makes sense, but please ask if you have any questions. And I will see what else I can find out re the original POP issue.
If you want to thank someone for their comment, do so by clicking the Thumbs Up icon.
If your issue is resolved, don't forget to click the Solution button on the resolution!

  • Just set up POP email account - only seeing inbox folder

    Hi
I have just set up a POP email account and it has found it successfully and downloaded all my inbox messages however I cannot see my "sent" messages or drafts and I also have a sub folder underneath the inbox which I cannot see.
Do I have to manually set up each subfolder or does the Iphone not automatically see the same subfolders when it connects? Also every email stays showing as un-read even if it is read on the server, even when I refresh the Iphone it still says un-read. Do POP accounts not automatically sync with the server or is there something I can do to set this up or an APP that will do this? Please can anyone help?
Thank you for any help or information.

With POP email accounts, the mail 'lives' with the client, not on the server. So, Sent and Drafts on the iPhone will only contain messages sent from or being composed on the iPhone. Any subfolders set up in the mail client on your computer are only on that computer. You can pull messages from the server to the Inbox on the phone if the mail client is set to leave the messages on the server for a period of time, since from the iPhone's perspective they are new.
POP is really designed for accessing your email only from one client. If you want to use several devices and access the same account, you are better off with an IMAP account, where all the mail 'lives' on the server.

  • Can someone help re setting up sub-folders on a POP email account

My email is through btinternet and I think it is a POP account (no expert on this sort of thing!). Is it possible to have sub-folders on a POP email account on your iPhone? Or is this only on IMAP? If I can't do it does anyone have any recommendations on which email provider is the best for the iPhone and is there anyway to map my old address to my new one?
Sorry if being incredibly thick here!?
PS. Am I right that on text messaging there is no way to forward texts that are sent to you (eg, jokes)?

    Welcome to the discussions!
I do not believe you can have subfolders on POP accounts. Exchange, IMAP, Gmail and Yahoo! do support it however. Gmail/Yahoo! is free so it's hard to beat that price!
If they allow it, you may be able to setup email forwarding on your BT account. Log into the web-based version of the account and see if it is offered.
As of right now, you are not able to forward text messages. Hopefully they'll add this soon.

  • Old pop email account resurfaced in mail

    Hi guys.
I am hoping someone will know the answer to this as it is driving me mad!
My old pop email account I used to have I deleted as the account closed. However for some reason now that I am using Mavericks is still there despite me deleting it!
I keep deleting it and for some reason it keeps reappearing in the list of accounts!
I do have a macbook and I deleted that old pop email account from there as well. But it still appears!
Any ideas on how to sort this out once and for all?
    Cheers

    Hi Chama9876,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The article below may be able to help you with this.
    Mail (Mavericks): Remove mail accounts
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14944
Removing a mail account removes the account information from Mail and deletes the account’s mailboxes and messages that are saved on your Mac.
Warning: Deleting a POP account permanently deletes its mailboxes and messages from your Mac and cannot be undone. If you back up files using Time Machine, you can use it to recover previous versions of mailboxes.
    Restore mailboxes and their content
Choose Mail > Preferences, then click Accounts.
Select an account, then click Remove (-).
Removing an Exchange or IMAP account doesn’t permanently delete the account’s mailboxes and messages because they’re stored on the mail server. To retrieve the account’s mailboxes and messages from the server, add the account again in Mail.
After you remove the mail account, if you close the Accounts window, you should be prompted to Save the changes.  Then quit the Mail app and restart the computer.
    Cheers,
    - Judy
