POP fw from Gmail comes in installments!

I've setup my Gmail to POP forward, so I can collect it through my Mail. Recently (although I can't point to the moment exactly) I noticed the following strange behavior:
I click on "Get new mail in all accounts" and all my accounts in the sidebar show the spinning gear. All is fine, I think. As soon as the mail collection is completed (like 4-5sec later) I click on Get new mail once again. Since mail had just been collected, all my accounts stop showing the spinning gear after less than a second. Not so for my Gmail account spinning gear: not only does it keep spinning for some time, it also actually downloads more messages (as in more than it had just finished downloading)! And what's worse, if I once again click on Get new mail, my Gmail will download even more messages
This can go on for a series of, say, four or five times. All mail that comes from my Gmail in this manner is legitimate, i.e. there are no duplicates. It seems as if Gmail tells my Mail.app to only receive 6 out of 6, then 11 out 11 then 8 out of 8 messages, until the whole lot have been shipped to me.
What gives? Have I got a bug, or is Google Mail messed up lately? Or is it a known Mail bug?
Thanks, people.

Alex,
I have been using my Gmail as IMAP, and not POP recently, and I don't get a lot of email to my Gmail account (I do in other accounts). However, since Gmail builds a subset of the messages you would see in the Inbox via Web access, and only presents this subset for POP access, I guess that might have periods of slowdown. I don't think there is anything in Mail to cause this, but if you have Mail set to Auto check for new messages, what is the frequency set to?

  • Can't download POP email from GMail - HELP!!!!

Just upgraded to a Macbook Pro from a 1.67Ghz G4 Powerbook.
I've set my Macbook up from scratch with a completely new install and no matter what I do I CANNOT get Mail to download my POP email from GMail.
I've deleted and completely reinstalled the account, set up a new user account and tried that, stopped the POP in GMail and renabled it and all I get is the lightning symbol for a problem with the account.
    Outgoing mail goes fine.
I'm tearing my hair out. I fired my Powerbook up and it worked fine so it's definitely something on here....

I'm embarassed to say that I had put the SMTP server port number in as the POP server port which explains why it didn't work.
After 3 years of supporting people using macs I should know better but it just shows that if you think you've done everything right you can stare straight past something....
Thanks for the help and sorry for being such a dimwit....

  • How to download attachments excel file from gmail

    hi,

You can't download attachments with an email account via webmail access using a browser.
You can view attachments in a received email when accessing the account with the iPhone's Mail app and you can save photo attachments to the iPhone's Camera Roll and save PDF attachments to the iBooks app, but all other attachments such as a Word or Excel document can be viewed only.

  • Both inbox and outbox from Gmail ends up in my gmail/pop/mail inbox

Both inbox and outbox from Gmail ends up in my gmail/pop/mail inbox; how to resolve?
    - So: the mail I send via gmail comes also in my inbox of mail in which I use the gmail pop account.
    Please help!

This is a Gmail issue. Gmail POP access doesn’t work like a normal POP mail server would. Here are some of its idiosyncrasies:
    1. Messages downloaded by any conventional POP mail client are marked as downloaded at the server (but not as read on the web), and no longer available to either the same or any other POP mail client.
    2. To make already downloaded messages available for POP access again, you must go to Gmail’s Settings > Forwarding and POP page, select Enable POP for all mail, and click Save Changes, which causes everything (and I mean everything) still on the server to be downloaded again.
    3. The Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings have absolutely no effect on the messages stored on Gmail’s server. Gmail ignores any requests to delete messages from the server made by a POP client. What happens to the messages on the server after a POP client has downloaded them is determined by Gmail’s Settings > Forwarding and POP > When messages are accessed with POP setting alone. In the case of Gmail (and only in that case), I recommend turning OFF Remove copy from server in Mail, so that Mail doesn’t even try to remove any messages from the server, regardless of whether you do actually want already downloaded messages to be removed from the server after some time or not.
    4. Messages sent using the web interface will be downloaded by your POP mail client as if they were received messages. Although this may seem weird, it's good because it allows archiving all messages locally in Mail, regardless of how they were sent — as long as you don't access the same Gmail account with more than one POP mail client, that is. You can set up a rule in Mail to automatically route those messages to the appropriate Sent mailbox (or to any other mailbox for that matter) if that's what you want.
    5. Messages sent using a POP/SMTP mail client such as Mail are also treated as if they were incoming messages for POP purposes, just as in #4. What prevents them from being downloaded is that Gmail marks them as already downloaded immediately. Since they’re on the server nonetheless, already sent messages would be downloaded together with all the other messages on the server if proceeding as described in #2.
    6. A particular case of #5 are messages sent to yourself. Instead of putting a copy of the sent message in the server’s Inbox and making it available for download, both the sent and the “received” message on the server are actually one and the same, and hence, cannot be downloaded via POP for the reason explained in #5.
    7. Gmail allows POP accounts to be set up in a special way that avoids some of these issues while introducing others. If you only need POP access to the last 30 days of mail, you can configure Mail in “recent mode”, as described in How should I use POP on mobile or multiple devices?, i.e. by typing “recent:” (including the colon but not the quotes) at the beginning of the User Name field (not in the Email Address field) in Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Account Information. Configuring the account this way would allow Mail to download messages marked by Gmail as already downloaded (and download messages sent to yourself in particular), but it would also cause all sent messages (not just messages sent to yourself or through webmail) to be downloaded as if they were received messages.

  • When I answer email from arboristsite. com I get a search engine pop-up. Why?

When I go to Arboristsite.com and click on one of the forums I get a search engine pop up. It doesn't happen on Opera or Internet Explorer. I don't know how to get rid of the pop up.
This pop up also shows up when I get an email notice from arboristsite.com. As soon as I click on the location of the post I get the pop up.

I do not know how you figure a glitch. YOU store a name associated with an email address and it displays that name when you get an email from that address.
Glad it fixed it for you.

  • Mail downloaded from POP account in Gmail appears in Sent mail

I have configured Gmail to download mail from two other POP accounts. I use Mail.app in OS X with IMAP to access my Gmail. I've noticed that when I receive a message from one of my POP accounts, it appears in my inbox but also as an unread message in my Sent mail folder. Why? Is there anything I can do to change this behavior?

Sorry, I should have been more clear. The Gmail account is set-up as IMAP. But it does download POP email from other accounts. It's a nice feature and one of the main reasons I just use Gmail now for all email.
I know I could just ignore the issue, but it bothers me to have unread messages in the Sent mailbox. Clutters up the interface.

  • How do you mark a message as spam when your mail comes from gmail via OS X Mail.app?

How do you mark a message as spam when your mail comes from gmail via OS X Mail.app?
I use IMAP to get Gmail. I seem to remember seeing a "[Gmail]/Spam" IMAP folder in previous versions of the app, but that's not visible any more.
Without this, I have to log on to the web-based Gmail to mark messages as spam, that's a productivity killer.

right mouse click on a message and select Mark as Junk Mail

  • Deleting email from Iphone only not from gmail account

I have business emeails that come through on my Iphone.  I want to delete them from my Iphone only.  Not delete them totally from gmail.  Can not find a way to do that.  What am I doing wrong?

You can do this when accessing the account as a POP account on the iPhone only with the correct settings for not removing messages from the server when deleted from the iPhone - if Gmail supports accessing the account as a POP account.
Accessing the account as a POP account with an email client on one computer or mobile device and as an IMAP or Exchange account on another can cause problems.

  • Using POP access with Gmail

I just got a 3GS and I am trying to configure my Gmail with the Mail app in the manner that's best for me and I'm hitting a bit of a snag.
I know that the iPhone will "archive" emails in Gmail when using the Mail app and moves them into the All Mail folder but I find that a bit inconvenient.
I would like for the Mail app to work in a manner that pulls email from my Gmail account but leaves the original messages in the Webmail account as my wife and I share an email address. So I don't want to delete an email on my iPhone and have it deleted in Gmail.
It appears that if I enable POP in Gmail it will keep a copy of the downloaded messages in the Gmail account but what will occur if I delete a message on the iPhone?
Does anyone use iPhone/Gmail in this manner???
    Thanks for the help!

Have you tried deleting a message from the phone to see what happens?
My similar issue is that after the iphone checks gmail POP, mail.app doesn't retrieve the emails. The emails are still marked unread at www.gmail.com.
I also want to be able to access my emails from different devices. I look forward to hearing solutions.

  • Mail only storing emails in Mail and deleting from Gmail and Iphone

Ok so i have a gmail account. I set up Mail on my macbook. I also have that Gmail account on my IPhone. When I open Mail it retrieves my mail and thats great. but when i open my email on my IPhone, the messages are not there. So if i check my email on my computer, it deletes it from the server i guess? Because even when i go to GMAIL.COM there are no emails since i checked my email on my Mail account. Please help because my work schedule gets emailed and i need to be able to see all my emails on my IPhone, MacBook, and Public Computers. Thanks

I'm guessing that you are using GMail as a POP server. You need to switch to IMAP. On the GMail end, go to Settings, then Forwarding and POP/IMAP and enable IMAP. Next, you will (unfortunately) have to re-create the account in Mail, since you previously set it up as POP. If you have messages stored in the In box, Trash or Sent mailboxes associated with that account in Mail and don't want to lose them, create new "On My Mac" mailboxes (Mailbox -> New Mailbox, set location to "On My Mac") and move the messages there. Then delete the account and create a new IMAP account. Follow the directions at the link below to set up the account:

  • Migrating from Gmail to Hosted Exchange / Outlook 2010

My company has been using Gmail for its email for the last 5 years.
We were sharing a single company wide email address for 3 users. All incoming mail came [email protected].
Gmail let us create our own signature to the outgoing mail and the world was OK.
Everyone saw everything; anybody could tackle any issue or contact whoever was needed to keep things rolling smoothly.
Over 5 years our email spool grew HUGE.
As the company grew we have come against a few problems.
    1. No privacy.  The owners of the company have to use personal email accounts to talk about anything they don’t want the rest of the company to hear.
    2. We recently started bringing in outside help to work on "special projects" and company information (past and present) and individual privacy is now important.
So I suggested switching from Gmail web based email to Outlook/Hosted Exchange.
Migrating our mail system was horrible, but I got it done in about 5 days over the 4th of July long weekend.
What I ended up doing is creating a user called EVERYONE.
I moved everything from Gmail into that account.  I retained the directory structure we created in Gmail that has 100’s and 100’s of folders and subfolders.
I let (almost) everyone share that EVERYONE user.
Everybody also has a [email protected] email address.
When new mail comes in it get delivered [email protected], each person then sorts the message into our EVERYONE user account under
the proper project folder / subfolder / sub-category.  This system works OK but I am sure there is an easier way, BUT THAT IS NOT WHY I AM WRITING.
    MY PROBLEMS ARE:
Because we are using the old project folder granular Gmail file system it is difficult to move mail into the proper folders.
When we were using Gmail you would start typing the project name / subcategory and it would POP UP and you would drop the mail.
A typical folder nesting would be: ACTIVE PROJECTS->Jones Residence -> Sub-Contractors->Painting-> Master Bath->Wallpaper Samples
OUTLOOK does not let you move mail through a contextual system.
You have to “Drag and Drop”, but navigating through 5 or 6 folders and subfolders over and over is a PITA and my users want something similar to the Gmail system.
Ceptara's Organizer for Outlook and QuickFile for Outlook available on Slipstick look like 2 possible solutions.
    Has anyone used either program?
How well did they do what I outlined here?  Any other suggestions?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Kevin

  • Safari wpn't retreve mail from Gmail

I have a problem. Safari will not retreve incomming mail from Gmail. The mail appears in the Gmail mail window but not in Safari. I get an error; Connection failed
The server error encountered was your account is not enabled for POP access. Please visit your gmail settings page and enable your account for POP access
I have very carefully followed the setup proceedure at the Gmail.com site. http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13275 Actually, I had my wife who is a programmer watch over my shoulder to double check. I can send email from Gmail but can not receive Right now I have two mail accounts, Comcast and Gmail. Should incomming messages from both accounts appeat in the same Safari window? If not where? I even went back to Gmail and checked my pass word.
    Thanks Bob

Don't you mean that you can't seem to receive Gmail via Mail.app? If you can access your account in Safari, then there's nothing wrong with that, but if you can't retrieve via Mail after setting it up, that's something else.
Are you sure you checked your Gmail settings? You need to enable POP access in Gmail before you can retrieve your mail via Mail.app
    Hope this helps,

The error message says that you don't have an outgoing mail server selected. Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and select the gmail account in the left hand panel. Next go to "Outgoing Mail Server" :
It should read smtp.gmail.com if you are using pop. If it is blank click on it and it should display whatever outgoing servers you have configured. If the only option you have is to "Edit SMTP Server List" then you need to enter the information as shown below.
These are the standard settings for gmail pop:
You will also need to set password authentication on your outgoing (SMTP) mail as shown below:
