Pop key back into keyboard?

I needed to pop out a key from the keyboard but I can't get it to "pop" back in, so to speak -- any pointers? (I have the two plastic bits lined up right I think, but the black key itself won't snap back in...) It's 'a' key if it matters...
Thanks!

Yeah, we've determined I managed to break the spring thing Glue didn't really solve the problem satisfactorily. Replacement bit on its way In the meantime, my left pinky is getting quite dexterous

  • Having Trouble Getting "down arrow" Set Back Onto Keyboard

    Hello there,
    I have spilled some soup on my laptop, nothing terrible just a little bit leaked near the arrow key. I was able to prevent any leakage below the keyboard itself.
    However, when i took off the down arrow key - to clean the underneath of the key, and the base of the key connection - I cannot figure out how to secure the key back into place. There is the 2 component plastic connector for the bottom of the key, and once I have them assembled (in what seems to be the only possible configuration), pressing into the keyboard is not securing it into place. The key is remaining wobbly, and unusable.
    Are there are advise on this topic, or reference I could see?

    Thank you very much.

    What is your product number, so I'll know the exact notebook you have?
    Thanks,

    one of the keys popped off of my keyboard, is there a way for me to pop it back on ?

    dancestar10997,
    if it still has its tiny retaining tabs, then you should be able to pop it back on. If they’re no longer there, then it won’t stay on.

  • Key wont go back on keyboard!

    i have a Compaq Presario CQ62 219-WM. my 'M' key was getting sticky, so i removed it to clean it. well, when i try to put it on, it wont click and stay. can someone help.
    ohh, and by the way, nothing is missing from it, it still has everything. i would appreciate some help.

    If you somehow manage to dislodge a key from its place on your keyboard—whether it’s an older Apple or third-party keyboard or a one of the newer aluminum keyboards now shipping with new iMacs and Mac Pros—you may not be able to just pop it back in place. Turn the key over and see if it has a little plastic “scissor” attached. If it does, and it’s not broken, lift the scissor carefully off of the key and reattach it to the keyboard by hooking it under the tab on the right-hand side, and then fastening the two little plastic hooks into the catches on the left side. Now you’ll need to slide the key cap onto the top tabs of the riser; you may want to use a toothpick or other small implement to keep the riser steady while you reattach the key. Note to anyone with a new aluminum keyboard: The non-letter and -number keys on the Apple aluminum keyboards are trickier to reset because the loop that stabilizes them is made of pliable metal that’s easy to bend the wrong way unless you have a very soft touch.
    If you break the plastic scissor on a key cap, you’ll almost always be able to find people online who are selling replacement key caps and scissors.
    I got this from a site that posted this article today, hope it helps.

  • For some reason my "N" key popped out of the keyboard on my Mac Pro

    I had my grandchild here and the "N" key popped out.  We have clicked the "n" back into the slot but it is loose.  Does anyone know how to reseed the key into the keyboard that it will stay?

    You can take it to an Apple Store and they can put the key back on for you, or replace it if it is defective.

    If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
    Otherwise*, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
    When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
    from the menu bar.
    In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
    Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
    Press return. A Reset Password window opens.
    Select your boot volume if not already selected.
    Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
    Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
    You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
    *Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead the instructions on this page:

  • How do I get my email history off of my POP servers and BACK into Mail?

    I was trying to change the name of a folder in my OS 10.4 Tiger Mail application. It generated an error message, (I do not know the exact message) it said that I could not change the name of that folder. After the error message left the screen, ALL of the email in that folder disappeared. Including all of the email in the 24 sub-folders that I had created... Poof... Gone... My entire business email history for the past month.
    I was able to access my account info (through the Account Info panel) for all 4 of my POP accounts located on different POP servers. Thankfully, my email history has NOT been deleted off of those servers. So my question is:
    How do I get my email history off of my POP servers and BACK into Mail?
    I DO NOT want to delete ANY email from the servers, I just want to get my history back into Tiger Mail... Someone help me please...

    I spoke with Mac Tech Support. To get my messages from my server back into Mail, I was told to mark my email (on my webmail server) as unread. Mail will then know to pull these specific messages into my account.
    However, this is one of a handful of problems that I have been having with the Mail application. Just today I tried to create a new message by hitting NEW and the program crashed. This plus having all of my messages disappear and then having to reimport them isn't worth the effort. I've decided to stop using Mail completely.
    I was just told about Mozilla's Thunderbird email application. It's free and looks better than Mail. Do yourself a favor and go check out Thunderbird at:

    I purchased a Macbook Air 11" in January 2011. It has one key on the keyboard which sticks making an irritating clicking sound that I would like to get fixed. I took it into my local iStore but they were not at all encouraging, saying they doubt that Apple warranty will cover something like this, and also that the whole keyboard would have to be replaced as they don't do individual key repairs.
    This is very unreasonable to me. Firstly, the keyboard does work (is not actually broken) although the intermittent clicking sound of a single key is very irritating to me and I expect more from an Apple product than a flawed keyboard.
    Any thoughts, tips and insight on this greatly appreciated.

    Just wanted to conclude by saying that I did go to an Apple store and after supplying proof of purchase and verifying the warranty etc, I had my MacBook checked out by one of the technicians who (after finding that my machine was immaculate bar the sticky keyboard of course) they replaced the entire keyboard within a week.
    I was so happy with the helpful and prompt service and am now so happy with my new silent keyboard!
    Also wanted to add that the young guy who told me at the iStore that he doubted Apple would support this and guessed Apple likely say it was due to user damage was being a tool, and he was obviously assuming  that I had done something wrong to break my keyboard.
    This was my first Mac purchase and I was delighted to find that the support is genuine and not just a rumor... I have since gone on to purchase an iPad2 will probably buy the iMac too once my trusty PC needs replacing. I was never a PC hater and got on well with windows, and was actually reluctant to make the change - but so far so good :)
    Thanks for all the help!

  • My home button is not popping back into place after pressing it

    My home button is not popping back into place after pressing it. Thus a double click is nearly impossible. It takes a while until it is back in place and i can press it again. Anything I can do? May that because of dirt in the ultrafine gap between glass and button?

  • How can I pop my 5c into its backing without causing any more damage?

    I think my phone must have fallen because now there's a gap in the corner between the screen and backing, how can I pop my 5c into its backing without causing any more damage? Everything works fine ... its now just super duper fragile ... and open.
    I have a warranty but little spare time and much need for the phone.

    I figured it out by pressing the home button and the off button but when i turn my phone on again it's not restored. And when i try to restore it with iTunes it has to update but i can't update my phone because it's jailbreaked but if i can't update it, it won't restore the phone.

    dear apple, can you please tell me how to put my 'x' key back onto the computer properly without giving me an answer which will make me want to buy a pc like 'we WILL only replace the entire keyboard'?

    My profile does say level 1 (0 points) quite obviously pointing out i am a noob at this, although i did try to correct myself in the previous responce to **macbook.
    I am confused why you think i havn't answerd michaels question though. 'I assure you the keyboard or the joining parts aren't broken and if it isn't broken i dont feel the need to replace it. • Problems turning bytes back into a des key

    hi there-
    i'm writing a client/server application the uses encryption to send files back and forth. i have been able to get my program to receive certificates from the client and server. i have generated a des key using:
    KeyGenerator kg = KeyGenerator.getInstance("DES");
    java.security.Key secretkey = kg.generateKey();
    and I want to send that to the server, encrypted with the public key. i'm trying to do it like this:
    Cipher cipher = Cipher.getInstance("RSA");
    cipher.init ( Cipher.ENCRYPT_MODE, key); //key is the public key
    theBytes [] = secretkey.getEncoded(); //send secretkey
    bytesEncrypted [] = cipher.doFinal(theBytes);
    outToServer.writeInt(bytesEncrypted.length);
    outToServer.write(bytesEncrypted);
    the problem is, once i transmit the des key and decrypt it with the private key, i dont know how to turn it back into a des key from the bytes. can someone help me out bigtime and let me know how i can go about doing this?
    thanks a bunch!

    In followup to my previous reply, here is the sample code.
    import java.security.spec.KeySpec;
    import javax.crypto.KeyGenerator;
    import javax.crypto.SecretKey;
    import javax.crypto.SecretKeyFactory;
    import javax.crypto.spec.DESKeySpec;
    public class SecretKeyTest {
         public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
              System.out.println(System.getProperty("java.version"));
              KeyGenerator kg = KeyGenerator.getInstance("DES", "SunJCE");
              SecretKey sk1 = kg.generateKey();
              System.out.println(sk1);
              byte [] sk1Bytes = sk1.getEncoded();
              SecretKeyFactory skf = SecretKeyFactory.getInstance("DES");
              KeySpec spec = new DESKeySpec(sk1Bytes);
              SecretKey sk2 = skf.generateSecret(spec);
              System.out.println(sk1.equals(sk2) ? "Equal" : "Not Equal");

  • Problem with the volume keys on my keyboard.

    Hey everybody,
    I have a problem with the volume keys on my keyboard. This started a couple days ago and I can't seem to figure out how to fix it. When I press the volume up or down buttons, the graphic appears on the screen as it normally would, but has no effect on the volume of the sound coming out of my speakers.  Therefore, the only way to change the volume of music or whatever I am listening to is to use the volume control within the program/website itself (itunes, youtube, etc.) Even changing the volume on the volume icon at the menu bar on top of the screen does nothing.  If anyone has an idea of how to go about solving this issue, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

    First look into the Preference > Sound > Outpur whether internal Speakers are choosen.
    The only Preference to delete I can discover is com.apple.systempreferences.plist in your home Library folder. You can try to move it out to the desktop for example, not to loose all your settings. Restart and see whether the problem still persists. If you don't know how to do this here some Terminal (Applications > Utilities) commands. Enter them by copy and paste followed by <enter>
    mv ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist ~/Desktop/
    restart
    to get it back:
    mv ~/Desktop/com.apple.systempreferences.plist  ~/Library/Preferences/
    confirm with "y" if you are asked to replace this file.

  • How to get back into Mac OS X Leopard after installin Bootcamp

    OK have finally installed Bootcamp and now want to get back to the safe world of Mac again, however although I have been following the instructions in the manual which tell me either to...
    a) set the default operating system in Windows by clicking on the Boot Camp system tray item (which doesn't seem to exist) or if it does is so hidden that I cannot find it, or,
    b) select an operating system during startup by holding down the option key (which is impossible as I don't have such a key on my non mac wired keyboard)
    neither of them seem to work. Whatever I do I cannot get back into my Mac operating system.
    If anyone has any ideas as to what I can try I would appreciate your help.
    Thanks

    Hello:
    I believe the following should help. In Windows XP, make your way to C:\Program Files\Bootcamp. You should see an icon labeled "kbdMgr". Double click that and look for the tab labeled "Startup Disk". Click your Mac OS volume as the startup disk. By now, you should also see the gray diamond for the Bootcamp manager in your system tray. Clicking that brings up a menu that allows you to restart in Mac OSX or enter the Bootcamp control panel where you can select a startup disk.
