POP MAIL ACCOUNT ALWAYS  MARKS MAIL AS UNREAD

I have several mail accounts and only my POP account updates and marks all mail as unread even though it was read hours before.
Couldn't find any settings to change to eliminate this problem. It is my most
active mail account and I'm constantly having to resort through upwards of 40 emails a day on the iPhone.
I don't have this happen on my MBP using the Mail application or if I go directly to the mail server when I have opened the email with another mail application.

This is the nature of POP accounts, which are really intended for accounts that are accessed only on one computer/device. Since the mail 'lives' on the device, emails are 'new' to each device. There's a read flag, but it's not universally implemented. If possible, use IMAP for that account, and that will solve your issue.

  • Using a POP mail account in mac mail

My friend has an AT&T sbcglobal POP mail account he has added to his mac mail app. Since it is POP mail it is not always received in his mac mail box if AT&T Yahoo account receives it first. I guess he can prevent the Yahoo mail box from downloading the messages if he signs out of the Yahoo account. But he also has an iPhone. So will he still have the race problem between the computer & the iPhone on which gets the mail first?
Appreciate any suggestions on how this can be solved?

    For POP:
    The following mail server settings will work with all AT&T email domains: @ameritech.net, @att.net, @bellsouth.net, @flash.net, @nvbell.net, @pacbell.net, @prodigy.net, @sbcglobal.net, @snet.net, @swbell.net, @wans.net.
    Email Program Settings Field:
    Enter:
    Incoming (POP)
    inbound.att.net
    Outgoing (SMTP)
    outbound.att.net(requires authentication)
    Incoming mail server:
    POP3
    Incoming/Outgoing User Name:
Full AT&T email address, including domain (e.g., [email protected], [email protected])
    Incoming mail port #:
    995, secure connection (SSL) checked
    Outgoing mail port #
    465, secure connection (SSL) checked
I assume the settings you are refering to gives that delay for marking the messages as read when highlighted for that period of time. Probably for scrolling through the list without changing the unread status. Lion doesn't have that selection, so I can't test that at the moment.

  • IOS5, iPad(1) and POP Mail account

It seems that once I updated my iPad to iOS5, it is now looking at my POP mail server and treating every email on the server as NEW...!!! So basically, it keeps pre-loading the next 100 messages and says it's ready to "Load More" messages from the server - over 5,000 messages. Not cool. How do I tell this thing to ignore all those old messages. I cannot sit here for a day or two "dismissing" thousands of messages. Any ideas?
I am in the midst of updating my iPhone 3G[s] as I type this... so the problem may (or may not) manifest there as well.

So... per your idea, I "disabled" the two POP accounts in my iPhone and RECREATED them using IMAP instead. Once I did that, a few things happened:
No massive list of unread messages
All my emails were there in both accounts
I could now SEE all the folders I had created on the mail server
When I delete an email, it always says "Unable to Move Message - The message could not be moved to the mailbox trash." in a popup dialogue... yet the message disappears.
I will need to experiment when I get home to see how IMAP behaves differently from POP. I know with POP, I could delete local/downloaded emails from my iPhone/iPad and keep it relatively clean and it had NO EFFECT on my home computer and/or the email server. As it stands, it SEEMS that IMAP treats email differently... I'll need to experiment, but it appears that I am not looking at a downloaded "copy" of an email - but actually MANIPULATING what is on the email server - so if I "DELETE" something from my iPhone/iPad, I am GUESSING that it's also being deleted from the server? Also - up until now, I used my home Mac as the "MASTER" of all my emails. I save everything into folders on my local MAC. My worry is (and I'll confirm later) that if I delete something using my phone BEFORE it made it to my Mac's inbox, it'll never get there. My MAC mail app is accessing the same accounts as POP... will look into changing them to IMAP as well (if possible).
    Thanks again.

  • Could someone PLEASE tell me how to set up more than one POP mail account.

I am soooo frustrated. Before I upgraded to Tiger I had no problems setting up my mail accounts. Now, I can only set up one POP mail account. I have three mail accounts that I desperately need to set up from the same ISP server, all POP accounts. On Panther and earlier, all I had to do was add the accounts. Now I have ONE POP account and when I try to set up another I get an error message that I already have a POP account set up. Why is this happening and what happened to the old system that worked just fine. I am so annoyed with this. It simply defies logic!!!!

I don't know if this will work or not, but why don't you try using bogus pop and/or smtp server information when you initially establish the accounts with Mail's setup wizard? Just continue through the "warning: cannot validate server" messages that the wizard will give you. Then go into Mail > preferences > accounts and highlight each of the new accounts, one at a time, and try changing the incoming pop and outgoing smtp mail server information to what it is supposed to be?
For the "Outgoing" server just use the pull-down menu, to select it, and when all accounts are done, go into that same pull-down menu and choose "Edit Server List..." to remove the bogus smtp server information.
Incoming should be just renaming that pop server in the "Incoming server" field.
If that doesn't work, I've got something riskier you could try, again with no guarantees, and that is editing your ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist file using either the Property List Editor that comes with XCode Tools (will launch automagically when you click on that .plist file if XCode is installed) or with the pico editor in Terminal, and possibly renaming some folders in your ~/Library/Mail folder, too. Again, start with the bogus server info, then find those entries in the .plist file and make changes there.
Note: if not familiar with the notation, "~" means your "home" directory.
(if this solves your problem, or is actually helpful towards arriving at a solution to your problem, please consider marking this reply as "helpful" or "solved," in addition to, if applicable, marking this question as "answered")

  • I deleted a pop email account from mail.  How can I recover those sent messages without Time Machine?

I deleted a pop email account from mail.  How can I recover those sent messages without Time Machine?

    Thomas,
"Note that you were warned that this would happen and approved it.  When you delete an e-mail account in Mail, you are shown a message like the following:"
You didn't read my problem - I said I deleted a POP email account.  I always read the messages that pop up and in Mail when you delete a POP account - IT DOESN'T TELL YOU NUTHIN!  It just deletes it - which *** for me.  Fortunately, I had an iPhone and on that device I had about a 1000 messages that I could recover but on all my POP accounts I download them from the server onto my Mac so they were only on Mail (the really old ones that I wanted to keep.)  I had to move them into another directory one by one basically because when I would move 50 some of them would move and some wouldn't and I never did figure out that problem.  Basically the ones that would not move are the ones that were associated with my domain changes with GoDaddy, and there were a lot of those.  Have no idea as to why only those were resistant to moving but I can get all that data from GoDaddy anyway.
This thread is now moot seeing as how I've recovered everything I can and am going to just move on - and back up more often.  ;-)
Apple and Mail need to rewrite that program to include a WARNING MESSAGE when deleting an Account in Mail that says ALL YOUR MESSAGES ARE GOING TO DISAPPEAR NEVER TO RETURN IF YOU DELETE THIS ACCOUNT, SO YOU DANG WELL BETTER HAVE A BACK UP IF YOU WANT TO KEEP ANYTHING BEFORE PRESSING THAT MINUS SYMBOL!  ;-)

  • Can icloud email receive email messages from another account by automatically retrieving them like my iphone does. Microsoft calls this pop mail

I have an iphone and an ipad. I don't have an Exchange email account pulling all my messages from my verizon email account into my apple devices. My husband uses his Outlook computer at work to create 2 Inboxes on his iphone (one is his work email Inbox and one Inbox is his pulling from his personal account). I noticed using an Exchange-type email program with the iphone allows for features I want. I want to check email on my phone and ipad. I ALSO want to be able to file emailed coupons into an Inbox coupon folder on my phone and ipad for easy retrieval. It seems the icloud email program will let you do all of this. It also seems Google offers gmail and it will do this for me. Now that I set up an icloud email address, I can't figure out how to get Verizon email pulled into it. My iphone and ipad pulls my Verizon email but does not allow for Inbox folders. Verizon won't auto-forward emails to another account. Gmail will pull them for me though. Will icloud do this?

Verizon netmail just offered auto email Forwarding. So, even though icloud might might not offer the services Gmail and other email programs offer to pull email, it seems I might still be able to accomplish what I want using the other email account's ability to forward my email to my icloud email address. We'll see. Please reply if you know the answer to the icloud's ability to pull email in a way like pop-mail does for pc users. It would have helped me if I could've found the answer to that question in this support forum...

  • If you delete a POP mail account in Mac Mail can you get your mails back?

This has happened to a client of mine. She'd just set up a new account for her email as she'd moved servers. She had an old POP mail account on her Mac Mail for two years which she deleted and now all of her old sent mails are gone plus everything from the inbox that wasn't moved into folders.
How do you get those emails back? (I'm not sure if she has been using Time Machine to back everything up)
Will re-creating the old account help?

If she hasn't been backing up with Time Machine (or a full backup which hasn't been overwritten) they are gone. Recreating the account won't being them back.
If she has Time Machine, open (user)/Library/Mail in the Finder and then enter Time Machine. Navigate backwards looking for a folder named POP- and the name of the account. Use TM to restore that.

  • Is it possible to flag e-mails and/or right click an e-mail to mark as read/unread, etc. when using Microsoft Outlook Web Access in Firefox on a Mac?

Is it possible to flag e-mails and/or right click an e-mail to mark as read/unread, etc. when using Microsoft Outlook Web Access in Firefox on a Mac?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== I've never been able to figure out how to do those things in Firefox.

When you use OWA in something other than IE, you're using OWA lite and no--it is not possible to do either in OWA lite (well, new Exchange stuff makes my answer a little less emphatic but still: pretty much no). Thanks Microsoft. But this guy made it possible to mark unread/read and select all/none:

  • Why when using firefox to read e-mails in outlook can't I mark messages as unread?

there's no option for "mark message as unread" when running outlook in firefox.
    Why?

Okay so I randomly typed "gmail" into the "Domain" field in the Exchange setup after reading your response and it seemed to work. That gave me the option to "flag" or "unflag" a message by clicking the little flag icon in the mail app. That's a start. But then I realized that when I flag a message, it doesn't show as flagged in Apple Mail or in Gmail's web client. However when I flag messages on my Mac they show as flagged in Gmail's web client but not my iPhone. My Mac and the web client seem to be syncing just fine but not my iPhone. Weird. I'll read that thread now...

How do I set up a POP mail account to use a different outgoing SMTP port? on Maverick O/Sx. Cannot see option to use 2 different ports?

In Mail>Preferences>Accounts tab>Account Information tab - from the 'Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):' drop-down menu select 'Edit SMTP Server List...', choose the server you want to edit from those listed, click on the Advanced tab. Does that give you the option you're after?

  • Pop mail account

i can not figure out for the life of me how to add folders to my pop account, is there a way add a folder to place the emails I want to save? i can add folders from my yahoo account but cant from my pop account.... anyone know how to its driving me crazy.

POP mail accounts do not use folders. IMAP accounts can use and sync folders to the iPhone.

  • Ios 8.0.2 multiple pop mail accounts fail to send mail

When I set up my primary pop email account with a primary outgoing mail server and a second outgoing mail server as required by my email provider everything works fine. When sending a email and the primary outgoing server cant connect it searches and sends on the secondary. The problem is when the second pop email account is added, and the two outgoing servers are configured for that account, then neither account will search a secondary outgoing mail server if it cannot connect to the primary outgoing mail server.
The only way to get the mail to send is to turn off the primary outgoing mail server in settings.
This scenario worked just fine with 7.1.2 but not with any version of 8 that I have used. Apple botched email up and its not acceptable for people who use their phones for anything other than a toy!
    Please help if you can.

First, reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches after installing new software.
If this does not work, set it up as new device, explained in this article:
iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device
If this does not work after restoring from the backup, try again, this time without using the backup, to make sure that this is not software related.

  • Pop 3 Accounts in Mail or Mac Mail in Office?

I need to get all three of my e-mail accounts in one e-mail browser.
Which is easier, moving my two Pop 3 accounts to Mac Mail, or moving my @me.com account to Office Entourage or Outlook?
    Thanks!

To me it's six of one, half a dozen of the other.
I'd use whichever email client you like the best.
For me that the Mail app.

  • Old pop email account resurfaced in mail

    Hi guys.
I am hoping someone will know the answer to this as it is driving me mad!
My old pop email account I used to have I deleted as the account closed. However for some reason now that I am using Mavericks is still there despite me deleting it!
I keep deleting it and for some reason it keeps reappearing in the list of accounts!
I do have a macbook and I deleted that old pop email account from there as well. But it still appears!
Any ideas on how to sort this out once and for all?
    Cheers

    Hi Chama9876,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The article below may be able to help you with this.
    Mail (Mavericks): Remove mail accounts
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14944
Removing a mail account removes the account information from Mail and deletes the account’s mailboxes and messages that are saved on your Mac.
Warning: Deleting a POP account permanently deletes its mailboxes and messages from your Mac and cannot be undone. If you back up files using Time Machine, you can use it to recover previous versions of mailboxes.
    Restore mailboxes and their content
Choose Mail > Preferences, then click Accounts.
Select an account, then click Remove (-).
Removing an Exchange or IMAP account doesn’t permanently delete the account’s mailboxes and messages because they’re stored on the mail server. To retrieve the account’s mailboxes and messages from the server, add the account again in Mail.
After you remove the mail account, if you close the Accounts window, you should be prompted to Save the changes.  Then quit the Mail app and restart the computer.
    Cheers,
    - Judy
