Pop up says I can't use Aperture 3.4.5 with my version of OS X.  How do I recover photos?

I am not a techie, so this is extremely frustrating.  Years of photos are on Aperture and I can not access them, nor find a way to upgrade the software...not even sure where the photo library exists on my hard drive...or is it proprietary to the Aperture?
I have an iMac, 3.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo computer with 8 GB1067 MHz DDR3.  Startup Disc Macintosh HD
Any help would be appreciated.

To your other question:
not even sure where the photo library exists on my hard drive...or is it proprietary to the Aperture?
By default the Aperture library will be created in your "Pictures" folder. It will show an icon like a  "Fan of Pictures".
You need to update Aperture version 3.6, to be able to run Aperture with Yosemite. When you call Apple Support, they will ask for a proof of purchase for Aperture to be able to send a redeem code. This document describes, what counts as a proof of purchase:  Pro Application Replacement Serial Numbers
