Pop3 email account stuck 'preparing to retrieve messages'

Hi,
I've seen others with this issue, but so far none of the suggestions has worked for me. I have three accounts in Mail, two gmail ones, and one pop account. The latter hasn't been able to retrieve messages since the 6th of March. I've moved the messages downloaded plist, the envelope index files from the Library, I've run disk permissions and repaired the disc, I've trbuilt the mailbox, and reindexed Spotlight.
The messages come through on my ipad and phone okay, just not on Mail on my Mac. Interestingly, last night I decided to try Thunderbird instead. I set up the account and nothing! The progress indicator at the bottom says 'Downloading message 1 of 87 ...' but nothing comes through.
I'm waiting to hear from my ISP, but as emails comethrough to the ipad, etc, I doubt they'll have much to say.
Any thoughts would be most appreciated.
Cheers,
Kev.

Hi again, and please forgive the bump. My ISP hasn't suggested anything, as expected. However, looking in the Console this morning for Mail entries came up with this:
16/03/2014 08:51:30.000 syslogd[17]: Configuration Notice:
ASL Module "com.apple.mail" claims selected messages.
Those messages may not appear in standard system log files or in the ASL database.
16/03/2014 08:53:50.128 WindowServer[231]: disable_update_timeout: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Mail" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them.
16/03/2014 08:53:53.388 WindowServer[231]: common_reenable_update: UI updates were finally reenabled by application "Mail" after 4.26 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds)
16/03/2014 08:54:59.911 Mail[1259]: -[MFPOPConnection fetchMessages:totalBytes:] failed: Error Domain=MCMailErrorDomain Code=1029 "The attempt to send data to the server “(null)” failed." UserInfo=0x60000124a6b0 {NSLocalizedDescription=The attempt to send data to the server “(null)” failed.}
Is any of this helpful?
Cheers,
Kev.

Bought a new iMac that had Snow Leopard when shipped. Transferred everything fine from my PowerPC iMac running Leopard to the new iMac with Snow Leopard. Got everything setup and then received my free upgrade notification from Apple.

ok sorry everyone but i solved it myself but the solution is so nuts i've posted it here to help others who have the same problem.
to setup a comcast imap account on your iphone:
go to mail, contacts, etc in settings
    under accts, select add account
    select "other"
new screen, choose "add mail account"
now on the new acct screen you must enter your name, email address and password for your GMAIL acct ! (yes i said your gmail acct !, or some other acct with a NON comcast address).
    hit next
    then the acct verifies
when verified a screen will open with all the acct settings for this acct AND @ the top of the screen are the 2 buttons > imap or POP
select imap and THEN CHANGE ALL THE ACCOUNT information to the comcast account !
then hit next and the account will take a couple minutes to verify but it will verify and now you have a comcast imap acct set up on your iphone.  The problem must be that when the iphone sends the initial verify acct info to comcast (if you enter that information first) the comcast server is simply not setup yet to signal the iphone that there is an imap option.

  • Preparing to retrieve messages...

I have a pop account setup in mail to access my work email. The email server is on an exchange server and the pop account has worked for two years. Then all the sudden it stopped. Nothing changed but it gets stuck on "Preparing to retrieve messages...", no error messages it just sits there for two minutes preparing and then stops. It sees the pop server and I can send messages out. Even when I click on "get info" for the account, it shows all the messages on the server and even shows that they are not downloaded. Does anyone know what is going on or how to fix this? thanks.

nothing changed on both ends, not just my computer but also the server. Another kicker is a fellow employee has had the same issue for months before I ever had it. And another colleague doesnt have the issue at all. I tried re-installing mail, deleting all preferences, all accounts and installed the app from disc and that did not work either.

  • Preparing to retrieve messages... forever

Sometimes I check my email connected with my mobilephone or a bad wireless connection. If I get disconnected when Mail is checking for new messages - in the middle of downloading a bigger email... it seems like the Mail app get serious problems. The account that was disconnected cannot check mail anymore, and hangs with the activity "Preparing to retrieve messages" forever. The only way I can get the specific account to work again is to check the pop-account and download the messages with an another email program. When the pop-server is empty it seems like the Mail app resets and it will allow me to check for new mail again.
    It's very frustrating!
Please Apple! Is it something to do, other than having using my old Eudora program just to reset the account. And why is it possible to download messages with Eudora?

  • I need to access advanced setting on my iphone whilst setting up a pop3 email account

I need to access advanced setting on my iphone whilst setting up a pop3 email account.  I have entered all of the required details but when it comes to verifying the account it does not progress any further and remains at the verification stage.  I need to go in some how and change the security type and the port numbers.  I believe this is in advanced setting but I dont know how to get there.
    Any help appreciated

Can you clarify whether this is a POP or IMAP account? I suspect it is POP (and that messages have never been deleted off the server for the life of the account) but I'd like to make sure that is the case.

  • Syncing with POP3 email accounts

I'm just about at my wit's end, having spent the last few days trying to get MobileMe to do what Apple claims it can do. It can't.
That said, I now must figure out how to get my iPhone to directly access and sync with a couple of POP3 email account I have. I have tried going to settings, choosing "other", and adding in the correct info. It says that it "can't make the connection with SSL" and would I like to try without that, but when I say "OK", that doesn't work either.
Why is this so difficult? I replaced a Treo with this iPhone and am now having second thoughts. I mean, it can't access a POP3 account? What 90% of the world uses? I thought the iPhone was ready for "real" usage and not just a kid's phone. Frustrating. I just want to read my email... this should be "PDA 101"
OK, enough raving. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

Regarding email, what I was trying to do was have access to my already existing email, not the me.com email. He told me that I’d be able to sync my existing emails with MobileMe... but you can't, at least as far as I can tell.
A MM account can check the incoming mail server for a POP account - this option is available at the MM website. Messages received from a POP account will be downloaded to the Inbox mailbox for your MM account. The downside is when replying to or forwarding a message received from a POP account. The reply or forward will be sent from your MM account.
The idea is to use the MM email account as your email account. I've had a .Mac account for some time which was converted to a MM account. I moved quite a bit between 2000 and 2004. At the time, I was using the email account provided by my ISP. Every time I moved, I had to change my email address, and most ISPs don't provide or support an authenticated SMTP server. I started using a PowerBook as my primary computer in 2000 and if I wasn't connected to the internet via my ISP, I was unable to send messages with the email account provided by my ISP. I decided to start using my .Mac account as my primary email account which solved a number of problems for me. When moving, I didn't have to change my email address and since .Mac has an authenticated SMTP server, I was able to send messages with my .Mac account regardless the ISP used for my internet connection.
MM continues this for me with my PowerBook and with my iPhone. I can send messages with my MM account regardless the ISP used for my internet connection - with the Mail.app on my Mac, with the iPhone's Mail client, or with Outlook or OE on a Windows PC.
Meanwhile, I’ve set up these two email accounts and both can receive email but neither can send, although my me.com address will send & receive.
Because a MM account has an authenticated SMTP server, and your POP accounts probably don't. Who is the email account provider for these POP accounts?
I spent about 1/2 hour this afternoon with Apple tech support who couldn't figure that out and told me I need to do a complete factory reset on my iPhone, which will bring it back to original factory specs, causing me to loose all downloaded programs, information, etc., although I could back it up first with iTunes.
If you are syncing contact information and calendar events over the air with your MM account and your contact information and calendar events are available at the MM "cloud", this data will not be lost when doing a restore with iTunes. Other than that in regards to contact information and calendar events, the iPhone is designed to be synced with the supported application on your computer. If you aren't syncing contact information and calendar events over the air with your MM account, you should be syncing this data with the supported application on your computer and if so, this data remains on your computer and will not be lost when doing a restore with iTunes.
All downloaded applications from the app store should also be available in your iTunes library, which won't be lost when doing a restore.
iTunes creates and maintains a backup of your iPhone for all data on your iPhone not included with the sync process such as; most settings, SMS messages, notes, recent calls, call favorites, data stored on your iPhone by 3rd party applications, and photos captured by your iPhone - but I wouldn't depend on this one. Photos captured by your iPhone should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.
Your iPhone's backup is updated if needed as the very first step during the sync process. Before restoring, the first step should be a sync to update your iPhone's backup if needed.
Since all data available on your iPhone is included with your iPhone's backup or should be available and remain on your computer such as your iTunes content, photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone, etc., nothing will or should be lost during the restore process.
I had a Treo before the iPhone and setting up the email on it took me about 5 minutes. The contacts and calendar sync flawlessly with Outlook, and the setup for that was probably 15 minutes.
Which application did you use to sync your Treo direct with Outlook on your computer for contact information and calendar events?
So my secondary point is that the iPhone is not really ready for corporate life yet unless you are willing to put a LOT of effort into setup, which I was.
A MobileMe account is not designed for business use - it is designed for personal use and the idea is using the MM email address and account as your primary email account/address.
I access my MM account and a business POP account with the iPhone's Mail client. Setup for both took minutes. Both accounts have an authenticated SMTP server and I've never had any problems sending with either account for over a year with my first generation iPhone, or with my iPhone 3G. This is when connected via various wi-fi networks with different ISPs and via EDGE or 3G.
If you are trying to access legacy POP accounts that don't have an authenticated SMTP server, you will have problems. I don't know what was different with your Treo in this regard, but the device has nothing to do with an ISP blocking the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network or not provided by the ISP being used for the internet connection unless the SMTP server is authenticated. Most if not all ISPs block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network or not provided by the ISP unless the SMTP server is authenticated. This has nothing to do with the iPhone.

Have 1 POP3 email account I want to work like IMAP email in icloud (keeps my iMac, iPhone, ipad mail in sync). Apple suggested trying creating a new Apple ID just for that POP3 email. Has anyone tried this to see if it works and will delete/update across multiple devises? Would mean keeping up with two Apple ID accounts but only other alternative I know of is paying for monthly service for Microsoft 365.

would I be able to "upload" (not sure how else to say it) my existing folders and subfolders containing all my emails so that they are all available on my new IMAP service, while still being available on my Mac?
Not easily, no. There's no direct transfer option between POP and IMAP, especially across email providers. The best you could do would be to forward all of your emails to your new address, although it's not clear that you need to - dropping your sbcglobal.net account doesn't instantly render all your existing mail void - it'll still be in your Mail client, you can still read it, search it, etc., it just won't be on your provider's server.
I have toyed with the idea of getting a MobileMe account. Would that solve my issue/question above?
MobileMe would be viable, especially if you're interested in synching your various iOS devices. It's not free, of course, unlike Yahoo and Gmail, although you've already discounted them...
I have also toyed with purchasing my own URL, but it's hard to tell from the sites (1and1, Namecheap, etc.) if they come with IMAP email accounts included.
Some registrars offer email hosting bundles with a domain registration. This could be a good way to go. GoDaddy, for example, have a email hosting option for domains you register with them.

If you have two-step verification turned on, turn it off by logging into your Yahoo mail account on a browser.
