Popcorn 2 vs. Toast 7

I am inquiring on which program to purchase? Either Popcorn 2 or Toast 7. Primarily i will use either program to back-up DVD's, back-up data among others. Toast looks attractive, however, Popcorn 2 has ability to convert files to play on video iPod and PSP. Does Toast 7 have such capabilities? (i don't think it does, am i wrong?) Any insight? Thanks
PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You actually CAN encode for iPod and PSP with Toast
Titanium 7, but it's not quite as simple as with
Popcorn 2. But once you put a video into Toast and
select it (you have to convert the TS folder video to
MPEG first- an additional step w/ Toast vs Popcorn
2), .
Hmmm.. the VOB files IN the VIDEO_TS folder are already MPEG-2 and you can just drop those into the video space. Not sure what you mean but you don't have to do this.

  • Are ALL elements of Roxio Popcorn in Toast 7 Titanium ?

Or do I need to get both for full functionality in ripping/compressing/burning DVD's ?
    Thanks for your time!

I believe the full functionality of Popcorn 1.0 is in-built Toast Titanium 7 wheras there are additional features in Popcorn 2.0.

  • Yes I am an idiot---How to burn content to DVD for TV viewing?

I am sure this has been answered somewhere, but I haven't had any luck finding it. I need idiot-proof step-by-step instructions, if possible.
I am trying to put content from my series 2 TiVo onto DVDs for children's viewing on Sony DVD players in the family room. I have scoured the TiVo and TiVo Community forums but they are too abstruse and technical for me. Given the extremely poor reviews of Popcorn, Toast, Roxio, and Sonic (the current TivoToGo for the Mac solution) I don't want to spend $ and wasted effort.
I have used TiVo Decode Manager to convert TiVo content to MP4 (which works great ONLY on the Mac or iPod). I have used Living Room widget to convert TiVo content to MPEG (which is unreadable on the Mac without buying a Quicktime MP-2 component).
I have burned a Maxell DVD-R using iDVD (it didn't see the MPEG files, but I got them on the DVD using the Burn Folder) which works great on multiple Macs IF run as a Quicktime file or in iTunes. OS X DVD Player doesn't see anything (it asks for Video_TS and Audio_TS files, which aren't there), nor do any Sony DVD players see a disc at all. Please note that I have NO trouble getting TiVo connected to my Mac or transferring content to my Mac.
So, very simple question: I want to burn MP4 or MPEG content that is readable by Sony DVD players. I cannot figure out iDVD to do this. Or do I have to buy Popcorn or Toast?

I want to burn MP4 or MPEG content that is readable by Sony DVD players. I cannot figure out iDVD to do this.
Nope, iDvd won't do this (at least not directly). Toast/Popcorn are better options for what you wish to do.

eMac optical drive: reads fine but has ceased writing.  One day it's working fine, burning DVDs, then after repeated attempts stops copying and gives the following error message:  "Sense key=MEDIUM ERROR, Sense Code=0x0C, WRITE ERROR".  Drive is Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-127D.  Is this a software issue or is the drive half dead?  Get the same result with either Popcorn or Toast 10.

  • Need an External DVD Burner for eMac

I bought an eMac about 3 years ago for personal use. I didn't get the Superdrive at the time and now wish I had! I want to burn DVD's of my kids to give to the Grandparent's etc. They wouldn't be complicated, just photos, videos and some music. I also want to archive home videos.
The Apple store recommended the LaCie d2 DVD+/-RW Drive with LightScribe 16x and Toast 7 Titanium. But the reviews I've found about it have not been so great.
Has anyone used that burner, or can you give me a good recommendation for the easiest way to equip my eMac to burn DVDs. I don't want to spend a fortune or end up with a total headache! Thank you!!

i have a LaCie D2 dvd-r/rw ( older model, only 4x/2x i believe ), but my wife has been using it fine with iDVD... i don't think it required her to use Popcorn (or Toast) when burning.
i know of others needing to use other apps as a workaround, but mine was fine... and as always, if you're sticking with macs, i'd recommend using firewire over usb any day... never had reliable results with any usb 2 periphs with any regularity... might just be my luck, but i'd put my money on a good firewire burner, and can't say i've ever had any issues LaCie as well...

  • DVD BURNING AND FILE DOWNSIZING

Hi I want to burn a dvd on a 4.7gb disc. Yet the dvd file is to big. Is there a way to downsize the file so I can burn this file on to the disc?

Depending on what it is exactly you are trying to burn.
Roxio's Popcorn, and Toast-7 both have the ability to compress large files and compress them to fit on a standard 4.7gb DVD.
This is how you fit a 7 or 7.3gb file of a Commercial DVD Movie on a 4.7gb disc.
I would however suggest when you pose a question, give as much detailed information as you can.
This will allow all to give you a detailed answer to your problem.

  • How to edit a DVD

I moved some old VHS tapes onto a DVD and it plays OK in the DVD Player. The only files on the DVD disc is a folder called VIDEO_TS with many files inside that seem to match chapters in the separate VHS tapes.
I do not seem to be able to move anything into iMovie or IDVD by any drag or import method. What am I missing?
    aehaas

I just had a huge struggle with this, too. I'm far from an expert, but I will share what I've learned.
Apparently, you can't get the files off the DVD to edit in iMovie. You need additional software. Two options are Popcorn and Toast. Neither are cheap, though. Popcorn is about $50 and Toast is about $100. Be sure to look on Amazon at the reviews. Popcorn didn't get very good reviews. Though, reading them, I figured the problems people had may not have any connection with what I wanted to do. Anyway, I didn't want to pay $50 to be able to edit my DVDs.
I was told to look for a program called Handbrake. I downloaded this and went to get my DVDs. Ran into some problems (don't even remember exactly what at the moment) so I went to the Handbrake FAQs. It said that it didn't recommend using Handbrake to get DVDs to iMovie. So I took Handbrake off.
That's when I discovered MPEG Streamclip. This finally worked for me. However, you do need a Quicktime extension that costs $20, so it's not totally free.
Here's one thing I discovered though: You load your DVD into MPEG Streamclip. Then you need to export them to DV, which is a format you can use in iMovie. You need to select in option to separate it into segments, which is better for iMovie.
After you have done this, go to the files. If it split it into, say, three clips, the files might look like this:
    family.dv
    family.dv 001
    family.dv 002
You need to go in and rename them so that they have the extension of "dv" otherwise iMovie won't know what to do with them. So they should look like:
    family1.dv
    family2.dv
    family3.dv

  • Error Burning DVD-R

Hi, I am a new user here. I did read a few discussions on this topic but didn't find anything conclusive except that I should keep trying different media until one is successful.
I used Toast Titanium to try and copy a DVD - everything went slow but good until 47 seconds were left in completion. (after almost 1 hr of copying and then writing). I got the following:
    The disk reported an error:
    Sense key = Hardware Error
Sense Code = 0x03,0x01 I hit OK, then got:
    The disk reported an error:
    Sense Key = Illegal Request
    Sense Code = 0x30,0x05
Cannot write medium - incompatible format
I can't afford to keep buying different types of disk and wondering when I'll hit on the right answer.
Does anyone know a solution? Is something seriously wrong with my hardware(over $5000) ?
Thanks for any suggestions and help.

You won't have a problem making your own and burning them.
We have no clue how and with what software was used in burning the movie you tried to copy, it does sound like the encryption and security may be the problem, it's hard to tell without doing a little testing.
If commercial DVD movies are to be done it is more complicated than just stick it in and copy.
Most are over 7gb and besides reading encryption and security. Mactheripper is needed.
Then you need software to re compress to fit on a standard 4.7gb disc.
    So you need Mactheripper..
And then you can choose Roxio's Popcorn or Toast 7..
This only requires 2 pieces of software.
It can also be done with 3...Don

  • DVD +RW Erase Issue

I know this topic has been covered but not exactly as I am experiencing... I copied a DVD movie onto a DVD +RW (I just moved over to the Mac from the PC world and have lots of these) using Popcorn. Everything worked fine. When I was done with the movie (I only let my kids use the copied one.... long story) I wanted to reuse the DVD for another movie.
I used the disk utility to erase the DVD (tried both quick and full erase) and it appears that it worked just fine.
However when I mount the newly erased DVD it appears that the disk utility and Popcorn does not see it as a blank DVD. I then erased the DVD on my laptop (Windows) and put it in and both apps see it as re-writable. In fact, I am burning onto this DVD as I write this.
I have a new iMac (PPC G5 with iSight) and the DVD drive does list DVD +RW as supported (as well as many other formats).
So why can't I erase the DVD +RW on the Mac?... Funny thing is that I was able to do this about a month ago and erased some DVD's.
However, I know I have since updated various apps and systems stuff through the auto update. Could there have been some update that affected this?

    Ken,
It never helps much for someone else, me in this case, to say that I've had no problems erasing DVD-RWs but that is my experience. I use Disk Utility as you seem to do.
Do you mean that when you put in the "erased" DVD it still has files on it when you mount it? Or that Popcorn says that it can't do the writing task you wanted because of something about the disk? Was there some recent upgrade to Popcorn or Toast?

  • How to burn?

i got my imac g5. im still a new mac user. anyone teach me how to burn a dvd? i got the dvd, but i want copy the original dvd to another copy. anyone know how to to do? thanks

There are a couple of things you need to understand.
You need to familiarize your self with the burner you have in your machine.
Not all burners are the same and are not capable of burning all the different media's on the market. DVD-R is the most widely recognized and used.
DVD+R and all the RW are not as recognizable to all Players and Computers.
There are several different ways to burn from your MAC.
    iTunes.
    iDVD.
    Disk Utility.
are but 3 that your Mac can use without any other Software.
You have the option of burning
    Audio.
    Video.
    Data.
If you are wanting to burn Commercial DVD Movies you will need 2 pieces of Software. Mactheripper, for the encryption and security on the commercial Media, and either Popcorn or Toast 7 that will burn and compress the larger commercial DVD's to fit on a Standard 4.7 gb disc.

Here is the Software for copying.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22715
I suggest you do a google search on the subject.
There are several people that do not and will not discuss this.
I have given you the basic information you need.

  • RIPPING DVD TO I-BOOK

I have just upgraded CDROM drive on my G3 i-book to CDRW/DVRW and last night attempted to rip a DVD onto the i-book to then put on my video i-pod.
I down-loaded Handbrake and set the thing going, after 2 hours is had done only 4% of the DVD which by my reckoning means it would take around 50 hours for the whole lot (the DVD is about 1 1/2 long).
I am assuming this is becase the i-book is only G3 but wondered if anyone else had tried this using other software and what times they were getting, also is it healthy to leave the i-book running continually for that length of time
    Thanks in advance

Damian, Your iBook being a G3 is the problem.
Let me see if I can help you.
Ripping Software is only needed to do Commercial DVD Movies, to circumvent Encryption and Security.
Apple offers entry level software to burn with through Mac HD/Applications/Utilities/Disc Utility. This will allow you to do CD's, Data, Audio,
You can use Apples software through Disc Utility to burn just about anything EXCEPT Commercial DVD Movies.
The reason, most DVD Movies are normally over 4.7 gb in length and need to be compressed to fit on a 4.7 gb disc.
Popcorn and Toast 7 offer automatic compression with both of these Roxio Software's.
Most of the drives that are offered on Apple computers burn at 4X or 2X.
    SO here what you have,
1st You put in Media, and it has to READ the media
    2nd it will copy
    3rd it will write
    4th it will verify
This is the reason for the length of time to burn a finished DVD.
Depending on what you are copying, and Depending on the Software you are using, determines the length of time it takes to do the entire process.
Lastly, If you are Ripping, this also adds 2 to 3 more steps to the process.
It can take upwards of 2 to 3 hours to do some DVD's with the Software, you use....Hope this explains it. One last thing I recommend not storing any Video-TS folders on your machine It will slow down the performance a lot, and if you get to carried away it can lock your machine up.
the use of MacJanitor, Cache Out X and Onyx will also keep the access cache files and junk cleaned out of your machine. you will find that if you do a lot of burning after storing 4 or 5 movies will also store a lot of these files and need to be removed after burning a DVD.
    Hope this explains it....Don

  • ISquint to iTunes to iPod failure.

    Hi, friends:
Normaly, I use to try by my self different approaches to a problem before ask for help. Well, I've tried everything from erasing preferences files, testing alternate free software, buying software (Toast 8, Popcorn 2), different encoding options, but I always get the same or almost the same results: a movie either with low quality or a movie not capable to play in my iPod.
What I want to do is very simple: I have some iMovie 3 and 4 projects; I try to convert these projects to iPod format using the reference mov file as the source file; I don't care disk space taken by the resulting movie; I drag the mov file to iSquint, select for TV, Crazy quality, no H.264; the movie plays on iTunes but not on iPod. Then, I drag the mov file to Popcorn, to Toast 8, whatever software, and the result is the same: no iPod playing.
Finally, I convert the mov file to H.264 in whatever program and both iTunes and iPod plays it fine but the quality is horrible on TV.
Could you give me some advice? Am I alone on this? Is it my iPod?
By the way, the last upgrade I made was that to iLife'06.
    - PowerBook G4, 1.33, 12''
    - 60 Gg disk.
    - 768 Mb memory.
    - iLife'06.
    - QT 7.1.3.
    - iPod fifth G, 60 Gb.
    - Popcorn 2.
    - Toast 8.
    Thanks!!

  • Can you Rip DVD's with a iMac?

    Hello,
New to the Mac world (but not to computers)!!.
Just a quick question in regards to Mac's, iMac's and the ability to rip DVD's.
Basically, can you rip DVD's on a iMac and copy it to a blank DVD? For example, if I wanted to rip "Lord of the Rings" and put it on a DVD, does Mac have software that is able to do this?
I know that you need a DVD decryptor to be able to do this. Is there one available?
Don't get me wrong; I am not about to go out and rip a bunch of DVD's then sell them. this is purely if I wanted to copy a DVD for myself, so I can have a backup (i've had a problem in the past where i've lost DVD's because I travel so much.)
    Much appreciated.
