Popping on Playback

I've seen that others have experienced this.
I've tried the suggested settings & adjustments as described.
Still not very good.
I was quite happy to ditch media Player, but may have to reconsider.
I like iTunes (apart from this issue).
Is there a definitive solution yet?

  • Snaps and pops on playback

Using newly installed Logic Express 8 and am getting snaps and pops on playback, that are somewhat irregular -- occur at different times when repeating playback -- and don't appear in the waveform. Haven't bounced a file yet, so don't know if they occur in the final, but am wondering what this is about. Tried changing clock source....doesn't seem to matter.

For more info about the special tags needed to embed QuickTime content. Some of these tags can be use to "force" the QuickTime plugin which will prevent many users from "keeping a copy" of your work.
As it stands now, all any page visitor has to do is use the browsers "Save" to keep a copy of your work.
If you make a "page" for your files you can use the QT plug-in to help "control" the saving of your files.
You could also use some simple javascript that would open your music in a new browser window. In the new window you get some control over the plug-in used to play your music. A few extra tags in the html page code are all that is required.

One of my pages that uses javascript to "present" movies in a new window. You could set the height and width to the simple 16X whatever of your audio files. But they would only play if the QuickTime plug-in is also installed.
So. A click on one of your audio links in your current page would open a new "window" (you set the size and could even add other page elements like images) and your page visitors get to listen to the .mp3 file.
But it would take the upgrade to QuickTime Pro for most of your visitors to "borrow" your work.

  • Random Audio Crackling and Popping on playback in FCP and Pro Tools

    Hello All,
In both Pro Tools LE through an original MBox (with latest firmware), via USB and Final Cut Pro using an Edirol USB audio interface, I get random cracks and pops in different places that aren't in the actual audio files. They are not in the waveforms, and they never happen in the same spot twice...just random. There's no telling when they will be heard, but they are very loud and sharp, and I'm afraid of damaging my powered monitors, not to mention my nerves as I'm in the middle of an intense sound design for a film.
I've tried looking up this topic, and I've seen some topics mentioning sync/clock....like it's a problem with sync being generated internally, as opposed to using an external word clock generator. I never had this problem before on my older dual 2.0 PowerMac (PPC), and I really can't spring for a word clock generator right now...anyone else experience this with their Intel Mac Pro? I've looked for new firmware updates et al, but everything on the computer is up to date. This is really driving me nuts right now.

Interesting point about the winter/static. The only thing is that I never had those problems before with the same setup on my older dual 1.8 PPC G5 PowerMac, through several winters.
My current setup is a dual 3.0Ghz Intel Mac Pro with 3Gb of RAM. the RAM is the right kind and it has checked out as a-okay via numerous tests. The video card is the stock NVidea 7300 GT. For Final Cut Pro and general audio playback, I use an Edirol UA-1EX usb interface http://www.roland.com/products/en/UA-1EX/index.html (w/ updated drivers and all) hooked up through one USB port. For Pro Tools LE 7.3.1, I use an original Mbox, also updated with the latest firmware and all (got rid of the distorted noise problem with firmware update v22), also hooked up to a USB port. I used this exact same setup on my previous Dual 1.8 PPC G5 PowerMac with no such issues for several years. Both interfaces are routed to a Mixer, and onto my monitors. I don't think it's the mixer that's doing it because it didn't ever crackle/pop with my older G5, and still doesn't, which I still use for other things, but routed through the same sound system. I can understand the use of an external clock generator and such, but for many years, I never had this problem with random crackle/pop on playback with other computers that did not use an external sync/clock device. I would think that a computer as new and 'advanced' as the Intel Mac Pro would offer even better results than previous models. Again, the noises aren't printed onto the actual sound files, they come up randomly, but most often after adding a fade/volume change/effect and playing back.
I have just installed a PCI-Express USB 2.0 card for use with both the Edirol and MBox, just in case it was an issue with the built-in MAC USB ports. I will see if that helps.

  • [Solved for now] Sound pops on playback

I did what the wiki said to stop the sound from popping when playback starts, but it continues to pop.  Anyone having similar problems--any advice would be helpful too.

It would be nice if you told us what you did and where you got the instructions from .  But from what I'm presuming it's an alsa problem so did you follow the instructions from here ?

  • Popping in playback

I have this problem with some of my classical CDs, but one is particularly bad. When I play the CD through I tunes it sounds fine. When I import (I'm using AIFF, turning off all the sound check, eq, other features) and play the imported version, i get all this popping / clicking through the playback -- same with iTunes through the stereo -- same through the iPod. Tried importing with and without error correction. The CD in question: Biber Missa Christi resergentis, The English Concert, Andrew Manze.
In the past I found that Apple Lossless wasn't so lossless with some of the "better" jazz and classical recording -- such as with Saint-Germain... Cafe III or Mozart Violin Concertos and AIFF cleared up the problems. Lossless seems to work fine with any and all the other stuff I listen to.
Any ideas? Is there some buffering in playback or cd read speed thing which I should be looking at?
Thanks for any help before the holidays -- Biber is my Christmas music.

I did a search of the CD in question, and I can't verify that any releases of that title would be copy controlled. If it is, there should be some reference to this in the way of logos and/or text on the CD packaging or even on the disc itself.
Optical drive ripping accuracy and performance is probably the next thing to consider here. When clicking and popping occur on ripped tracks, and the source CD is undamaged, it is usually the case that the problems occur on the latter stages of the album in question (as the tracking becomes more difficult for the drive), and tends to suggest that the optical drive being used is malfunctioning.
Before taking any other steps, I would try to rip the same CD using cdparanoia, such as Max (with the paranoia ripper enabled) or xACT (perhaps easier to use right out of the box, and includes a detailed ripping log which you can and should read after extraction). If your optical drive is at all capable of reading the whole CD properly, even if multiple read attempts are required for certain portions of the CD, then you should get perfect or near-perfect results with cdparanoia. If you still get popping and clicking, it would be an almost sure sign that your optical drive is malfunctioning.
Final note: If you determine that your drive has failed, I would definitely suggest NOT replacing the internal drive if at all possible, since it would cost far less to use an external drive enclosure and you could have basically unlimited choice in the optical drive you put in the case. For less than about $30, you can get a new drive with superior ripping performance, such as a Plextor PX-130A or a 52x Lite-On CD-RW drive.

  • Static Pop Upon Playback of "What U Hear" SB X-Fi Titanium PCI-E

    Hi,
I've spent a great deal of time over the past couple of months trying to resolve this problem with no luck. If someone can provide a solution I would be most grateful.
    System
Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium PCI-e with latest Creative drivers
    Windows XP Pro SP3
ASUS P5KC with Intel E8400 with latest BIOS and chipset
ATI Radeon HD6450 with latest drivers (HDMI Audio disabled)
Logitech Z-5300 5.1 Channel Surround Speaker System
    PROBLEM
When recording is made from any source using "What U Hear" source the original recording is flawless. However, when I playback the "What U Hear" file there are brief (.5 second) bursts of static that occur about every 2-5 seconds.
    FAILED EFFORTS
    1. Uninstalled and reinstalled all Creative drivers and programs.
    2. Disabled ATI Radeon HD6450 HDMI Audio.
    3. Installed latest Microsoft LifeCam VX5000 driver and turned it off in Audio devices.
    4. Uninstalled various other sound related software -- Toshiba Bluetooth, Anysoft Video Recorder.
    5. Disabled all optional background programs -- antivirus, PLEX, etc.
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
What U Hear recordings have worked on this system in the past.
Thanks in advance for your assistance!

    Johnny,
    Thanks for the reply.
I have the X-Fi Titanium installed on a test system. I am not getting any of this crackling sound. Do you hear crackling noise during the recording process?
There could be other factors that may contribute to the crackling noise. If you have not already done so, it would be advisable to contact our Customer Support for further assistance.

  • Cracking during playback in 3.0

Hi, first let me say that I have done a lot of research trying to fix this, to no avail.
    Here's the issue:
When playing back a multitrack, there is random crackling in the audio.  It's not recorded into the audio files themselves (you can see in the waveform), but when I export, some of the cracks and pops are actually there.
    Also...
I have 4 gigs of ram, 2.66 ghz duo core processor, and a 500 gb 7200 rpm hard drive.  When watching the task manager while audio is playing (after closing all memory hogs, Itunes, internet, etc) I can see audition jump around from 0-12 CPU usage (while every other program is 0-2), and all of the crackling coincides with these spikes.
    What I'm using:
    Windows Vista
    Presonus Firepod
    Audition 3.0
Sound Card - SoundBlaster X-FI Fatality
The crackling playback occurs no matter what drivers I use - AA 3.0 sound, ASIO4ALL, and even the firepod ones will crackle when I listen to playback through the headphone slot.
I also never had this problem when I ran Audition 1.5 on Windows XP, but I really don't want to downgrade.  I have tried recording to my external hard drive, and it seems to do the same thing.
I attached a JPEG showing what my CPU usage looks like during playback.
I will kiss you if you can solve this problem, Audition 3.0 is soooooooo much nicer than 1.5!
Also interesting to note - I just installed 1.5 on this computer and ran it in compatability mode.  I cannot record in 1.5 (due to some thing being out of date) but the playback it flawless.  I can do all sorts of things with the processes and no static or popping during playback.

Hi everyone, thanks for all the help.  Buttttt I really wanted to record something that day and ended up reformatting and going back to XP.  Ever since then, absolutely no problems at all.
    To answer your responses though:
I tried looking for buffer size in the hardware options, but did not even see it.  I did increase the cache size (if that's the same thing, not sure) considerably, but the problem persisted.
Yes, even during edit view I would get some crackling, though not as much.
The interesting thing is I didn't even have any effects applied!  I had 2 dry tracks that both would crackle upon playback.  During recording, I would also get the skips in the audio.  It was awful.
Anyways, thanks a lot, some really good advice here so I will stick around.  I'd rather downgrade the OS and get the benefits of the real time effects editing that's available in 3.0.  It must have just been a problem with audio drivers and the OS?

  • Sleek Photo froze on Playback Er

Hiya?my sleek photo i've had for a couple of months so far has been a really good mp3 player , i put alot of Mp3's on it and its only like 0% full so far. the only issue i've had with it before was a vertical red bar that appeared in the middle of my screen. was there for months , then one day POW it was gone. So today i was listening to a song i had purchased from the Musicmatch online site i think it was. i bought the entire album of Hades "Resisting Success" and have had that for almost 2 years now on my main comp and on the sleek photo since i bought it. This morning i was listening to it on the way to work , then when i went to lunch i turned it on , it was at the beginning of one of the songs , and it just popped up "Playback Error" and froze. its now 6 hours later and its still on and froze , cant turn it off. I havent changed any mp3's?on the sleek since the first month i bought it , and havent downloaded anything new to my computer since i moved the mp3s over. havent had time haha. so my sleek is frozen in playback error screen and wont go off. any ideas?tanxj

    Jason,
I've not tried WMA at all. All attempts have been straight MP3. Last night I downloaded a set of upgrades to the s/w that comes on the CD - all for Creative PC applications , not the sleek itself. I deleted all albums from the Sleek and reloaded one (from the PC, not CD). The PC version plays ok, the Sleek one skips through several tracks (not in order, but I haven't got round to looking at how to organise things yet) before stopping after about 3 tracks.
I didn't get as far as DM's firmware suggestion - at am I went to bed(!) - and may not be able to get time tonight for another attempt. I will do the firmware if nothing else solves it. I'll also do more reading.
Thank you all so far - I'll keep you updated.

  • Kontakt 4.1.1 and Logic 9.1.1 needs Max buffer

I posted this on the NI forum too.I have 1 instance of Kontakt 4.1.1 in Logic 9.1.1 64bit with only 4 sounds loaded and have to set the buffer to Max 1024 otherwise all I get is clicks and pops on playback. The strange part is,when I first loaded this kontakt patch, it ran great with a buffer of 128.I left my computer for a couple hours and when I returned and hit play, everything was glitching out. When I bypass Kontakt, the song plays fine at a low buffer setting.when I run Kontakt, I get one of the CPU meters in Logic hitting red.Kontakt shows very low RAM and voice usage and I have 8 GB of RAM in a Mac Pro 2.66 Duo core.I have tried Logic in 32 bit mode, enabled Kontakt memory server, reloaded a blank Kontakt then loaded the patch.switched between Digi 192 (core audio) and Motu 828 MKII,rebooted, repaired permissions. The only way to get smooth playback is to set Logic's audio buffer to 1024 which makes it virtually impossible to play a part in real time.I know this isn't right as it was working fine at first.Any thoughts?

    Hello -
I have a similar set-up (noted below, with Mac OS X 10.6.4). I'm still experimenting with different configurations. Currently, I have Kontakt's memory server (don't remember its official name) engaged when in 64-bit mode (both Kontakt 4 and Logic Pro). On one project, I have a total of about 32 instruments in use including ones from Kontakt and EXS. All is well.
Now, it's my understanding that when in 64-bit mode, one doesn't need to use Kontakt's memory server. Have you tried either engaging or disengaging the server?
Also. . . I'm using MOTU's 2408 MK3. As far as I know, its drivers are updated to the latest ones. This also may be helping me out. Are the drivers to your audio drivers the "latest and the greatest"??
Finally, is your OS updated to 10.6.4? Your Info currently indicates that your using OS 10.6.3. (Don't know if this makes any difference.)
It's interesting how people can have similar set-ups with differing results.

  • Logic 9.1.5 using more CPU in 64 bit mode

    Yesterday updated to Logic 9.1.5
Have opened up projects in both 32 bit and 64 bit mode (but only 32 bit kernel as my mac pro is too old for 64 bit kernel).
Projects in 64 bit mode spike the CPU meter, and result in clicks and pops during playing.
Quit Logic, change to 32 bit mode, reopen same project. CPU meter reading lower, no clicks and pops on playback.
Now its an older machine (Mac Pro 1,1) and I am also running Vienna Ensemble Pro with a 9 GB template loaded up, but not connected to these projects I am opening, naturally this is taking resources.
Anyone else notice similar results, that the 64 bit mode causes projects to use more CPU?

In 64bit mode, are you using any 32bit 3rd party plugins within these projects? The 32bit bridge might be taking a hit on the cpu. From my experience, Logic in 64bit mode with 64 bit plugins has slighly less cpu usage than 32 bit mode. You may want to try a project with only Logic plugins in both modes for a true comparison on your machine.

  • Skipping cd tracks

I am encountering skipping (electronic pops and clicks) on certain imported music files in iTunes, usually in the last couple of seconds of a track after the music ends. This is happening to tracks that have been imported from cds I have purchased, as well as from cds I have burned myself. It doesn't happen to every track on a given cd, and it does not seem to be related to the condition of the cds (brand new cds might skip, old scratched ones might not).
In addition, I am encountering skipping on cds that I play on my computer through iTunes. In these cases, the same cd tracks can be played in Quicktime with no skipping. This makes me feel it is an iTunes-related problem and not a hardware problem.
I have tried downloading and reinstalling the latest version of iTunes several times. The first time I tried this, it seemed to solve things. Now the problem has returned and reinstalling hasn't helped.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    powerbook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I would suggest ripping your CDs with Max using the paranoia ripper to eliminate just about any possibility of faulty audio extraction. If you need help using the program, just ask...
As far as your actual audio CDs skipping and popping upon playback in iTunes, this is most probably due to a poor quality optical drive. The stock drives that ship in computers are usually very cheap and lack decent error correction features. The Combo Drive in my PowerMac, for example, is a Philips CDD5301, and is probably the worst drive on the market. I would never rely on this drive for anything, and have added a Plextor PX-230A (one of the best audio-handling drives on the market) and it eliminates all of these problems.
You might want to check System Profiler to get the make and model of your drive, and then search the web for some reviews from cdrinfo and similar sites.

Hi, if anyone here has replaced their ipod battery and it solved all your problems..can you please tell me how your ipod was acting near the end. I have a first gen ipod and it is acting weird lately. Constant freezing, plays a bit of a song then apple logo pops up, press a button and apple logo pops up, and pops during playback and so on. • Major audio problems...

Okay...(breathing into a brown paper bag) It started with some imported sequences that produced a heavy, harsh audio pops when scrubbing though, and then mostly no audio when playing down--mostly. Note, this was by no means the irksome "poppy, static-sounding" audio quirks we've gotten to know well in Premiere Pro CC. These sequences were imported into a fully functional system: CC, 7.2,  OSX10.8.5, 3.33 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon, 32 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC, AJA KONA 3. All 23.976 Pro Res 422 LT converted from RED EPIC.
I found that when matching-back to the clip, original clip audio was fine...no pops, no playback problems. AND, when overwriting the clip onto itself (onto these imported, selects sequences) things played fine. Sooooo, to get through the day, I matched back all the clips and blew over their former selves. Things were playing fine then, I could cut and integrate these clips into existing sequences. All good, we might say. Still with me? That was Thursday. Friday morning, I found that MOST sequences, including b-roll selects built 6 months ago, were now producing these heavy, doomsday pop when scrubbing and then essentially not playing any audio. Meters were flat. Nevertheless, waveforms completely present and visible on the timeline. Next, I noticed that the audio line on certain channels of certain clips was missing (see screenshot) and when double clicking said timeline clip to load it into the clip window, we'd actually see a missing slider and the DB level would read "nan." (see screenshot of that and next to it, the same clip from a match-frame for proof of both channels)
We've tried: New projects, repeated pref-trashing passes, un-installing the AJA drivers and PP completely, re-installing from the Cloud...and nothing. Next, we rolled back to 7.1. Started a new project and imported a test sequence from the original. Same story. It seems inconsistent, random, maddening. Scary that a full software reinstall and roll-back didn't fix this. That is to say, we're running a version of Premiere from a little ways back, using sequences from a little ways back, with no hardware changes to our system...
    Please advise.

After running some smaller projects have not seen this issue since february. The word on the street that is that it was due to a PE issue. Actually PE 3.0, I think. However, reading through some other threads, this is not an PLuraleyes issue exclusively.
I am back at the editing helm now after shooting a documentary project with lots of clips. We did a bit of early syncing with PE six weeks ago. In the meanwhile we shot some more stuff and I am back editing.
I switched the project to my macbook from my iMac and while I was waiting for the tedium of reconfirming & redrawing of waveforms, the audio started to disappear and now nearly all the clips on the timeline and in the bins have "nan"(not a number) value attached.
I wasted time again on tech support & now I remember I went through the same rigmarole in feb. Took an age to import project into AE. Rexported into Prem. Waste of time. The timeline is corrupt. Same as last time. So now my project is broken. Even if I fixed the hundreds of clips(manually reset all nan values), who is to say the progressive bug doesn't just come back.
Many more hours wasted-Please read my posts in feb
Re: Audio Disappearing, No Waveform, No Audio
VERY DEPRESSING to see this is still an issue. I was ready to move to another NLE then.
As mentioned by another post. THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE as when it happens in a project there seems to be no way out and, as in my case, I have wasted many more hours and days problem solving rather than creatively editing.

  • Transferring Tapes and vinyl albums to MP3 player

    Can anyone help me?
Is it possible to transfer vinyl records and cassette tapes to an MP3 player? I'm considering buying my first MP3, and I have an extensi've vinyl and tape collection - It would be great if I could transfer these, as well as all my CD's to the MP3 and release much needed space in my flat!
    Thanks
    Fay

You can select a digital audio format for converting old tapes or vinyl records. You need to select a recording source and format, and possibly Audio Clean-up if there is too much noise, "clicks" or "pops" during playback.
. Connect your source device (tape or record player) to the Line In connector on your computer's audio device.
    2. In Creative MediaSource Player, click the Recording Options button
    3. Click the Show Recording Status option
    4. In Status Display, select a Recording Source and a Recording format. For this example, select the Line In option and the MP3, Stereo option.
    5. Click the Player/Organize View button
    6. In the Sources window, select the audio source. If you do not need to use Audio Cleanup, go to step .
    7. Click the Audio Clean-up button
    8. Click the Enable Audio Clean-up option to enable Audio Clean-up
    9. In the Audio Source panel, select a source and adjust the other settings like Hiss and Click removal
    0. If you have enabled Record Sync, in Creative MediaSource Player, click the Record button. Otherwise, in Creative MediaSource Player, click the Play button, then click the Record button.
. When the recording has finished, enter a name for the recording.
I hope this helps, I just picked it up on a help tab, don't know anything about them though.
