Popping sounds back with Leopard

The problem with the popping sounds, introduced with 10.4.10 and fixed with audio update 1-2007 is back after upgrading to Leopard. At least on my MacBook. Here ist the old thread regarding this topic. The symptoms are absolutely the same.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1005162&start=0&tstart=0

My new MacBook also makes these popping sounds, usually when no audio is playing, but sometimes during music playback. I hope this is just a software problem and there's nothing wrong with my Mac.
These little "bugs" (BootCamp problem, PC Server showing up when it should'nt, this popping sound etc.) and stuff keep gnawing up the good image I had of Apple computers (as this MacBook is my first).

  • Cursor jumps 10 spaces back with Leopard

Not sure how to solve this, but since upgrading to 10.5.1 my cursor randomly slows down then jumps back about 10 spaces. It does this in Microsoft Word for Mac and webapps. I'm running Firefox on an iBook G4. It's really frustrating. Have searched for a solution in this forum, but not finding one. Can anyone help?
    thanks.

I experienced this random-action cursor when first using Mail.app in Panther. That's why I went back to Eudora. Now that I'm on Leopard I find that the cursor spasms remain, though not quite as severe. I'm using Mail.app, mostly, and try to type slowly and carefully. That helps but the action is still there. The Apple key + z sometimes gets me back to where I was.
People have tried the usual recourses (telling the trackpad to ignore accidental brushes, etc.), but the problem is real, and it remains.
This is probably not high on Apple's current agenda even though it prevents at least some portion of the clientele from using Mail.app.
    It's a discouraging little problem.

    Any ideas?

iTUnes actually uses parts of quicktime in the background to play audio and video. Usually when people report popping sounds in itunes, its due to some conflict quicktime is having with the sound device, the software with the sound card, or other programs on the PC like plug ins.
FIrst goto your PC makers site, and download/install any sound card/ audio device updates they offer and applys to your model.
Secondly you can try going to in windows, control panel>Quicktime>Audio tab check "Safemode (Waveout only)" Hit OK and reboot the PC for the settings to take.

  • Popping sounds in the multitrack in Adobe Audition CC

I've been using Adobe Audition CC for a week now and have been having some problems with it.  Sometimes there would be random pop sounds during the multi-track.  The random pop sounds would sometimes come at certain sections of the multitrack, but I wouldn't hear them later.  I would play the individual audio files and sometimes they weren't there.  Does anyone know what could be wrong?  Do I have to change some settings?  I ran Adobe Audition 3 a few weeks ago on my Windows 8.1 system and never had any problems with popping sounds .  With CC I get pops for some reason.  I have a custom made computer that is supposed to have high performance.  Is there anything I should change in bios mode?  The multitrack that I'm using is around 40 minutes, and is on 11 tracks.  I don't know if that has anything to do with that.
The computer I have is a custom made computer desktop that I custom made for working with music.  It's an i7 and the most powerful computer I have ever owned.  I have serious doubt that it's my computer.  My computer is new and runs fast.  As I said before, I'm running Windows 8.1 and it didn't have any problems with popping sounds when running on Adobe Audition 3 previously.  I think it probably has something to do with bugs in the program itself.  Has anyone experienced these problems?  If so, did you fix them?  Or does Adobe plan to fix them?  I have contacted Adobe once through email and sent a complaint through Adobe Audition's support system and heard from nobody.  So far, Adobe Audition has not sent me any patches or anything.  Adobe Audition CC is insanely expensive. I'm paying around $220 or $240 a year for a program that already has serious flaws.

    Hi there,
(My first post! I signed up/logged in specifically to ask about this problem, which I am also having.)
I am using an old Mackie mixer -> MBox 2 -> iMac. I have used this same basic setup for last few years, and this problem is sudden and new.
It sound like digital clipping/distortion, but is clearly not happening during the peaks of waveform. The input to Mbox is clear thru headphone monitor, I can't hear anything - but when played back, intermittent and audible pops/hits are happening.
My suspicion is that it is from the USB to the Mac; there are three USB inputs on the iMac and since the Mbox is powered via USB, I think the noise is being introduced there. I tried two outta the three ports (guess I should try the third - why did I stop there? Oh right - coffee!) So far I seem to have best luck when no other programs are running, restart the computer before every session, but otherwise I am just crossing my fingers!
I'll check back on this thread, as I need this ghost OUT of my machine! ~ Jim

  • Why lion is to slow? i never had problems with leopard snow

Hello guys , I really like apple and mac os , but this time my new lion os is working very slow, some time I want to go back  with leopard snow, what can I do to fix this speed problem , I have a macbook pro , and some times the sistem just freez, anyone know what can I do ?

reboot, hold cmd R. go to the lion revovery partition, go to disk utility, verify disk, repair disk, you'll probably see errors that get fixed, reinstall lion from same area after exitting out of disk utility....

    Apple iMac "Core i5" 2.5 21.5-Inch (Mid-2011)
    OS X 10.6.8
Having trouble with the audio on my iMac. AppleCare is not an option. This system made a few stops between a non-tech literate PO and myself so I have no history for before the symptoms presented.
    Problem Summary:
No sound from internal speakers at any time.
No standard audio from external speakers.
Constant high frequency popping sound from external speakers when hooked up.
External speakers known and tested good on another system.
    Details:
Popping sound starts immediatly after startup.
No startup sound with either internal or external speakers.
Tried iTunes and YouTube video played on Safari without success.
In OS onscreen volume control looks and responds normally to volume adjust action.
Popping sound on external speakers volume does not change with in OS volume adjustment.
'Internal Speakers' NOT listed in SYS PREF> SOUND> Output Tab   ( 'Headphones' is listed ).
SLEEP MODE stops popping sound, popping sound restarts with computer but at slower frequency for a few seconds.
    Actions tried:
Checked and cycled mute options in APPS> SYS PREF> SOUND  &  APPS> UTILITIES> AUDIO MIDI SETUP.
Quit process 'coreaudiod' in APPS> ACTIVITY MONITOR. * see note below
Checked that no light visible inside external audio jack.

How do you solve error "You can't use this version of the application Install Mac OS X.app with this version of Mac OS X" when trying to go back to leopard from lion?
Local Mac shop said to hold down "c" after inserting disk to get "disk utility" to come up in order to wipe hard drive.  I can't seem to get it to do this.

This W7 was purchased for using Fusion, as others did - per reviews from amazon.  The technician today called their contact at VMWare - Fusion not officially for use with Lion - even though I read at the VMWare support site that others have made it work.  Apparently my setup doesn't work.
Do you know how to do the proceedure for bringing up the disk utility when starting the disk?
BTW, some of the windows applications I want to continue using are Incredimail, Calendarscope, Stamps.com and a few others I have used over many years.  What do you use for email and calendar?
Wow, sounds like another reason to not use MS Windows.
Regarding your Disk Utility question, please elablorate I'm not sure what you're trying to do. Disk Utilty is just that...a utility, it's something most users never have to use especially on a new computer. Let me know what you're trying to do there before I give you some instructions.
As for as your Windows apps I would recommend using Mail and iCal, both come as part of OS X and are very robust tools. Don't discount the software built right into OS X it's very robust and powerful not all like the bloatware most Windows boxes ship with. Stamps.com well I'd look for another alternative. It's clear they don't support OS X which makes me a little suspicious that they're so behind the times.
Also if you have not been exposed to these links before I'd strongly recommend bookmarking them and using them. They're extermely useful!

  • I have a imac g3 dv se, snow and after about 10minutes of it booting it makes a popping sound and the turns off, then it wont turn back on for another 5-10 minutes

i have a imac g3 dv se,500mhz, snow and after about 10minutes of it booting it makes a popping sound and the turns off, then it wont turn back on for another 5-10 minutes any suggestions?

Actually sounds like classic symptoms of a failing PAV (power-analog-video) on that model. Historically that's the weak spot in the G3 iMacs.
The lack of active cooling in the G3 iMac puts a lot of heat stress on this board and they eventually fail from overheating. Right now the board is still working as long as it's cool--it only fails when temps inside the computer rise.
About the only way to preserve the computer's life is to mount a 120mm fan directly on the case where the handle is--that's the exhaust port. The fan has to be positioned to PULL air out through that vent. It's an ugly solution to the eye but it has been done around here more than you would think.
Also make certain the bottom of the computer is not blocked. It the computer is sitting on a tablecloth or placemat, or there are loose papers on the desk under the case, it cannot get enough air into the bottom-mounted air intakes. Make/find some blocks to set the iMac a minimum of one inch (2.5CM) from the desk and move anything that can be "inhaled" from under the computer.
Even with such measures, the PAV board will eventually fail and be unrecoverable. It's a good time to start saving for a newer computer.

  • When I listen to my iPod with my earphones it gives off a popping sound?

My earphones work perfectly when listening to any other device like my phone but just not to my iPod touch 2nd Gen. The earphones aren't the Apple ones I got with the iPod but others I bought a while back. My friend tried his earphones in my iPod and it sounded perfectly fine. When there are drums in the song it makes a kind of popping sound and the singing is basically taken over by all the other 'popping' instruments so cant hear the singing.
I find this very weird is there any kind of explanation and/or fix for this (besides for buying new earphones or a new iPod)?

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack or other problem.

  • Do you have pop sound from speakers in Leopard ?

    hi,
after using my macbook pro for 5 days, that known pop sound started to appear from my left speaker. I have read posts people experiencing this issue under Tiger but is it still there in Leopard ? and is this a hardware or software problem ?
    tks

I'm sorry that I'm not posting an answer for you, but I'm posting to say I had this happen to my MacBook Pro today. I upgraded to 10.5.4 about a week ago and this came out of nowhere today. I accessed a web site that had sound, so I know I had sound earlier today. A while later I heard a pop from the computer. Then about a half-hour later, I realized I wasn't hearing sound any longer. I hit the volume up/down keys and saw the visual clue that the sound level was changing, but there wasn't the usual beep to confirm the volume level. I pressed the mute key and heard the pop again. Every time I pressed mute, I heard the pop. There was no sound otherwise.
I confirmed that I could still hear sound through the headset output and shortly after that, the speakers started working again. I haven't had another problem since then. I wonder if plugging in headphones and unplugging them reset whatever was going wrong with the internal speakers?
Regardless, I hope someone posts a definitive answer soon.

  • Help with popping sound on new computer!!

    ) Hi,
? I just got a new computer from Dell XPS 9000 Windows 7 64 bit,?with the X-Fi Extreme Audio sound card. I'm getting popping sounds now and then, some when I go from page to page on IE 8 and back a page. I'm also getting the popping sound when I go to sound properties. I've tested diiferent sounds and it's a hit or miss on which sound would pop, seems different each time.
? Called Dell was on the phone 3 hours, they checked the hardware and everything passed, I also changed my speakers Klipsch - ProMedia 2. Speaker to a cheap set I had around and I'm still getting a popping sound now and then. Dell seemed to think it could be my hardri've, if that's the case, I just spent over 8 hours setting up the computer the way I wanted it. I also un-installed the sound card and re-installed it with the latest drivers.
? Could it still be the sound card or do some of you think it's my harddri've or something else?
    ???? Thanks, Jerry

try the pax or daniel k modified drivers because if you use creatives' you're screwed.
and to tell you the truth the popping will probably not go away 00%.
probably the wisest thing to do is to go to where you got the pc and tell them to change the card to something not made from creative or not using anything from creative. creatives' driver development team is not working for the past 8-0 months. they are on hibernation until the earths temperature reaches minus 32 celsius.
    good luck mate
    Cheers !!!

  • After upgrading to Mavericks (from 10.7.8), I get a popping sound on my speakers even with mute.  Suggestions?

I've never had an issue with my sound on my MBP 15" 2011 model until I upgraded to Mavericks.  Shortly after I upgraded, I started getting a 'popping' sound coming from the speakers even with the volume muted.
I'm trying to figure out what could be causing it by eliminating running programs but no luck yet.  So far I've tried:
    disabling graphic switching
disabling the Flash plug in for Chrome
Checking Voice over settings in accessibility (off)
    Killing coreaudiod
So far, only killing coreaudiod has worked for any length of time.
I'm not playing a sound, I have nothing in the background that's generating sound (with the exception of MS Office 2013 running in Parallels generating meeting notification alerts - that seems to cause part of it) but something is obviously triggering it.
    Thoughts?  Comments?  Suggestions?

Might be corrupted audio preferences ..
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Type or copy paste the following;
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Click Go then move both .plist files from the Audio folder to the Trash.
    com.apple.audioDeviceSettings.pllist
    com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
Restart your Mac. See if that made a difference ...

    HI there,
There are a couple things you can try. The first thing I would recommend is resetting all settings by going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. If that doesn't work, take a look at the article below for additional troubleshooting steps.
Note: The article title impies that it is for iPhones, but the troubleshooting steps are still aplicable to iPads.

How do I get my sounds back? My apps with songs don't work and I don't know when a message or email arrives.
    Thanks

Is it on mute? There is a switch on the side which may be mute or rotation lock. If it locks the rotation, double tap the home button and swipe your finger to the right. You should see volume, brightness, etc... On the far left is a button to mute or lock rotation. Make sure it is not on. If you still can't hear anything, go to settings> general> sounds> ringer and alerts and slide the dot to the right.
    Hope this helps!

  • I muted the sound while playing angry birds and now I can't get the sound back. I have the sound on ipod, just not with the games.

I muted the sound while playing angry birds and now I can't get the sound back. I'm fine with ipod, just the games

If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.
