Popular question, size needed to instal windows, on my concerns is.....

I want to install XP Pro on my Mac, for the sole purpose of playing Counter Strike, CS. Source, Half-Life 1 and 2. Is 10GB (the minimum) good enough? I want to use bootcamp, is that recommended, or should I use parallels and/or VMWare? Should I install anti-virus software right away?
If I do use bootcamp, can I "unite" my HD after the windows partition if I don't want windows anymore without consequence?
(I have my data backed up just in case so no worries there)
I have 200GB HD, so basically 186GB total, 100GB used...so any idea?
Also, can I run windows from bootcamp from an external HD, and play my games safely through there? If yes, how do I choose to start from that HD...
Thanks!
The games equal about 4GB total max!

What is, for 10 pts, Google?
And for bonus 5 pts, which is Wikipedia?
Highlight "NTFS" and then control + click, most every browser today offers "look up in Google" or use the web search bar.
FS = file system
Mac OS X we use to say "HFS+" for HFS Extended, which was "Hierarchial File System".
NT has its own history and used by Windows, goes back to the "NT" version of Windows.
NTFS is required for Vista, supports larger files and is more stable and robust than FAT. It even has some features HFS+ (which is now "Mac OS Extended" a more user-friendly term I guess).
You can read NTFS from OS X. And with software, you can WRITE to NTFS also. Due to licensing and cost, Apple doesn't use it, and Boot Camp (no longer) will format a partition as NTFS.
But you can use it: http://www.ntfs-3g.org/ or Paragon-Software.com
From Wikipedia:
NTFS supersedes the FAT file system as the preferred file system for Microsoft’s Windows-branded operating systems. NTFS has several improvements over FAT and HPFS (High Performance File System) such as improved support for metadata and the use of advanced data structures to improve performance, reliability, and disk space utilization, plus additional extensions such as security access control lists (ACL) and file system journaling. The file system specification is a trade secret,[5][6][7] although it can be licensed commercially from Microsoft through their Intellectual Property licensing program.[8][9]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS
NTFS is a high-performance and self-healing file system proprietary to Windows XP Vista 2003 2000 & NT, which supports file-level security, compression and auditing. It also supports large volumes and powerful storage solution such as RAID. The most important new feature of NTFS is the ability to encrypt files and folders to protect your sensitive data. http://www.ntfs.com/

I am going to buy either a Mac Air or Mac Pro Retina 8GB RAM and 256GB. And as I have to still run Windows programs I will install Parallels 9. As the Mac are both 64bit machines does that mean I need to install Windows 7 64bit or just install 32 bit? (Going with Win7 as I hate Win8). And I will install Office Pro 2013 64 bit too or 32 bit or is that automatically selected by the underlying OS (I use Word, Excel and Access mainly for a membership database of a local club) ? I am not a power user so would appreciate advice on way to go

Again thank you.  If I only use word, excel and access in the Win environment and Mac OS for email and safari for internet do I need anti virus software . Ie my connection to the world is mac only and I use office pro only to ruin the club, newsletters, membership database etc. and of course anything I do there can drag/drop to the mac environ to email.  That's my understanding anyway.  Next will my existing .pst file copy directly into mac mail or do I have to runs translator  as I recall reading something about that ages ago when I started thinking Mac

  • Storage capacity needed for installing window OS and lots of educational software in window OS

I going to buy 13" MacbookPro with Retina Display with 2.6ghz i5 dual core processor and 8GB RAM.
I need to install Window 8.1 Pro and mutiple(a lot) of educational software inside Window OS.
128GB or 256GB PCle-based flash storage should I choose to make sure enough capacity and smooth performance to me?
    Thanks.

You may want to inquire in the Boot Camp forum here:
    Boot Camp
to see if Windows can play well with the Retina display.
If those wise people say it does not, consider the entry level non-Retina 13-inch MBP. It comes with a 500GB conventional hard drive with the option of a 1TB drive, still has a DVD drive, and you can upgrade RAM yourself--it's a ten-minute job. Another plus is that model seems to have very few reports of mechanical trouble in these forums.
However, if all you want to run is Win, I cast my vote with Esquared: consider a Windows laptop. You can get a 17-ich i7 for much less than any Mac notebook.

  • I need to install windows on my mac

I'm an architect and have found myself needing to use Revit at home, obviously to do this I need to install windows on my mac. After doing some research I've decided to use Parallels to run Windows. My plan is to buy an external hard drive, install Parallels on my Mac and then run Windows as a Parallels Virtual Machine from the external hard drive. I know this sounds complicated but I think it will work as long as a get a good external hard drive. has anyone ever tried running windows like this? any advice on a good external hard drive? all helpful comments welcome!
    These are my details
    MacBook Pro, 15-inch, Early 2011
    Processor:2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB
    Software: OS X 10.8.2
    Thank you!

I have tried it before with USB 2.0 external hard drive. In case you are going to use USB external hard drive then I think the performance will be better if you put the Windows on the local hard drive instead of external since the early 2011 MBP USB port is not 3.0 yet.

    Hello,
Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum.
Your computer comes with Win 8 pre-installed but one of the steps to install/run Windows 8.1 is having updated drivers for Windows 8.1
Please, go to Control Panel -> System (or Start -> type winver and open) and verify what is your current version - if it is Windows 8 or 8.1
    Windows 8 is version  6.2.x
    Windows 8.1 is version  6.3.x
If Windows 8 in place, then , please read this article and enroll in the steps:
    http://www8.hp.com/us/en/pdf/instruct_update_win8.1_EN_tcm_245_1508074.pdf
Update to the latest drivers prior and post installation respectively for win 8/8.1 :

I need to install windows 7 on my iMac (via bootcamp), should i stall 32-bit or 64-bit option?
    Thanks

If your system is Core2Duo or better, use 64-bit.  32-bit only sees 3.5 GB RAM max.  64-bit Home sees 16 GB RAM max, and 64-bit Pro sees 192 GB RAM max.

When i go to the microsoft store and click windows 8.1 it says it is only for who has windows xp or vista...
can you tell me where and how can i purchase the full installation 8.1 for download?
i will keep the ISO file on my flash drive.
    Thanks!

it's likely an upgrade you are looking for and not a full install of windows
    http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/get-the-iso-you-need-to-crea te-your-own-windows-81-dvd/
if you get it as an iso file then you need to burn the iso file to a optical disc to install it

    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows
XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  For Boot Camp
4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • HT1899 Do I Really Need to Install Windows Platform on a New iMac w/ Mountain Lion?

    Greetings.
Do I need to install Windows 7 (or some other version of MS Windows) in order to run Windows based software?  For example, I want to run AutoCAD 14.  Will this install and run on my new Mountain Lion iMac without having MS Windows Platform installed?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    MarkCAFL

If you want to install and use Windows programs you must install Windows either natively using Boot Camp Assistant or in a virtual machine such as Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox.
Many programs have a Mac version. AutoCad 2013 is available for Windows or Mac http://usa.autodesk.com/autocad/trial/. I am not famiar with AutoCad 14 so you will need to do your own research.

Your post is very confusing. It sounds like you want to run Windows 7 using Parallel's software. If so yes you need a full license of Windows 7 and will need to purchase it. Please follow the instructions in the manual you got when you bough Parallel's and if you have difficulty following them you can find support for their product on the Parallel's forums at:

    1.  I will need to use BootCamp to partition and install windows
    2.  I will need a Windows disk (not sure if 6 or 7 is better?)
    3.  I will need my IOS disk to install drivers on new partition?
    4.  Here's the big quesion...If I have my Snow Leopard disks, do I use those?  My mac is already passed SL an I've got Lion 10.7.4.  Will this screw things up; having 2 different ones or will the SL only go on the new partition and then automatically upgrade to Lion?  I'm ver fuzzy on this part.
    5.  Is that it?  Am I done?
Again, thank you very much for the help!

  • What size partition do I need to install windows 8.1 & Bootcamp Question

Hello, I installed windows 8.1 on my MBA 128gb, I5, 8gb ram using bootcamp but I messed up and did not make the partition big enough. After the install of windows I only have 7.6gb left out of 30gb that I partitioned the drive to.
So how big of a partition should I make the bootcamp part. 40gb , 45gb ? I won't be doing heavy work on the windows partition.
Also can I use boot camp assistant to delete the windows partition and go back to one full Mac OX than do the Bootcamp install again from step one and start over with my windows 8.1 installation again ?
    Thanks

So endeed it took me an afternoon to resize and reinstall everythings. But at the end of the day i found the right space to use and never resize it then.
To conclude for Lenny7118, it is possible to resize your partition after the installation. But it's up to you to use the free way, which need time, or camptune.

I have better things to do with my time then spending half a day resizing a partition, but thanks.

  • HP Pavilion DV6 3122TX recovery partition deleted, need to install windows

    Hi,
I have a Pavilion DV6 3122TX notebook. The system would hang profusely when ever I was accessing any file, no it was not a virus or anything, I found out it was the HD due to error screen at startup "Hard Disk Error, Hard Disk 1(3F1)", I ran all self checks and diagnostics but nothing improved. So I formatted the drive completely deleted all partitions even the internal recoveries and others (my bad).
My recovery disc cannot be read by the laptop, the DVDRom LED blinks for a few seconds then nothing happens, "It says invalid system disk. Replace the disk, and then pres any key blah blah blah ..." The disc is fine I have checked. I changed the boot options to boot from internal CD/DVD.
I need a working windows as a temporary solution as quickly as possible. I cannot install Windows 7  apparently this is due to some lock (turns out it was unable to detect the HDD). Windows XP cannot see the drive due to AHCI driver requirement (can't switch back to IDE) due to BIOS lock. So I tried the AHCI driver slipstream method, now here's my problem I can't find the proper AHCI drivers for my laptop since I cannot login to Win to check with CPUz. Can someone direct me to the right text-mode drivers for this laptop to slipstream into winxp x86 using NliteOS. I'll take the laptop to be fixed to a service centre next month but now I need a solution. Even if you can fix my recovery solution it would be great.
I can access the hard drive using Linux. So the HDD is ok, please do not refer me to change the HDD that is not an option right now. (HDD was the problem)
Sorry for such a long post
