Populating InDesign templates with data from Excel or XML?

I have a client who does a weekly catalogue for computer parts. It’s very detailed and extremely time consuming, and we are looking at moving it to an automated InDesign workflow to save time and money in production. Once imported into InDesign, the resulting file can be exported as a formatted XML document to a webpage for auto formatting.
I know you can import XML directly into InDesign and vice versa. I have created some categories and tables in Excel and exported this as an .xml document. When I import that document into the View > Structure panel, it displays a whole list of attributes but not the actual text I was after.
Any help much appreciated. I’m using InDesign CS4 and doing some research on google at the moment.

If I understood you correctly, you are either trying to
View your xml data in Adobe LiveCycle form to redit the form???
View your xml data in Adobe acrobat pro
Or wishing to collate updated(new) data into adobe (lifecycle) tracker and view the data set
I suspect points 2, 3 may be the case.
My experience with migrating excel data back to adobe is this.
If you created the original form with adobe, you have the option of distributing the form (file/form distribution..)
to recipients list (could include form creator).
This allows adobe to generate a distribution and form response file and therefore able to track returned forms either as pdf (preferably) or excel/xml converted back to pdf after saving it.
For Point 2 above,assuming your original data set were created using an adobe form you previously saved, open your original form in acrobat pro, go to menu/forms/manage form data/import data (usually as xml). It automatically repopulates the form.
OR
To view returned forms as a set, go to menu/forms/compile returned forms and this will bring up a window that
requires you
-to browse and locate your response file (essentially defining the index form),which is opened into the top row
-then find and add each new completed form into a list in the second row.
You then click ok and all returned forms are opened in a tracker window...
I just realised I am talking about liveCycle ES version8 and this forum refers to pre ES!

Populate PDF template with data from another form

Hi all, it's been a while since I've been here. I'm not a LC pro by any stretch, but I've been working on a personal project which I hope will someday result in a small business. The idea is simple: a client fills out a custom form in Acrobat Reader which I've created in LC Designer. Upon completion, they email the pdf (or XDF, or XML, or E4X or whatever might be possible, I'm not even sure!) back to my website.
On my end... and this is hopefully automated... the data would be injected into a template PDF the client needs. This would then be sent back via email for them to print.
It's been over a year since I worked on this. Both the front end forms and the pdf templates are built, but the interaction between receiving the client data and populating the template form never got worked out.
Could anyone provide me with a clue as to what this workflow might look like?
Just to be clear, this application would be waaay too small to even think about going the Enterprise route. I'm "thinking" the automation part of it would be handled by some custom PHP coding, but that's another story.

Yes, I am wedded to the idea that I will only use Adobe PDF. The server component is a whole other story though. I understand the value of it, but as a small business, the idea of coughing up 60k is pretty much out of the question. Especially given that this form is a one of a kind, simple, time saver for my prospective clients.
From what I understand about LC, Acrobat and Reader, there are severe limitations imposed on saving form information in Reader. My clients need to be able to do that, as the form is quite extensive and needs to be revisited to be sure information is correct.
While any one user will probably not exceed the 500 submissions issue, hopefully there will be more than 500 users submitting 1 time!
We'll see if I can work around this issue.

Populate a drop down list with data from Excel and fill in a text field, based on drop down selectio

I have a problem with a PDF form: There's a drop down list that I populate with Excel data that I've put in an XML file through an XSD file -- no problem here. The drop down list has a data binding to the XML file, so that a choice in the drop down list can be associated with an object in the XML file. So, when I make a choice in the drop down list, a corresponding object value is fetched from the XML file and put in a text field on the form.

There's a snag, though, and to describe it more clearly:
The XML file contains three types of objects: role, role number, and role cost center. Of these I use the first and the third, i.e. the role and the role cost center. The drop down list contains the roles, and when I select a role, the corresponding cost center is filled out in the text field. So far, so good!
But -- if the cost center has the same value for two or more roles, all of these roles "bounce back" into the drop down list, that is, they are all selected in the drop down list. How many of these you can see depend on the height of the drop down list -- if it's low you'll only see the first one.
If I modify Stefan Cameron's data in his example I get the same behavior, so the problem seems to have to do with how XML data are fetched.
I'm sure there's a workaround, but I can't find it! I've spent many hours browsing the web without finding anyone with a similar problem.

I need to create a drop down list of names which I wish to somehow link to an Excel spreadsheet.

Importing dates from Excel 2013 (XML)

Hi all,
So I have a fully mapped (and otherwise perfectly functioning) Excel file which my organization uses to load data into PDF forms. Unfortunately I cannot get dates to work correctly. Here is the error I get on Import:
"Invalid date/time: please ensure that the date/time exists. Field [xxxxx] should match format m/d/yyyy"
I've tried everything I can think of. The formats are identical for both the cells (XLSX side) and the fields (PDF side). I should note that I am exporting an XML file from Excel, rather than using FDF or XFDF.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you try exporting a Microsoft Project 2010 project to an Excel workbook using the Project Excel Template option in the Export Wizard, you can examine the resulting Excel workbook to see how the Start and Finish dates are formatted. I can tell you
that the dates are NOT formatted as text. They use the General formatting and they show BOTH the date and the time. Using this information, perhaps you can adjust the data in your own Excel workbook and try importing the data again into the Microsoft
Project 2010 file. Hope this helps.

Populating a table with data from javascript

I have a CFC that returns (via ajax) an array with a length anywhere from 1 to n. I need to display the contents of that array on a webpage in a table (one row per array element). Since I do not know the length of the array, what would be the best way to render the table? My first thought was to build the table inside a string variable and then use jQuery's html() method. I also considered using ColdFusion to format the table in the CFC and pass that back to the ajax call. Either way seems very tedious. Was wondering if there is a better way.

Design Patterns can help when you are faced with a decision like this. Take the Model-View-Controller pattern, more commonly known as MVC. It tells us that the server should restrict itself to business logic, hence to business code. An example of business code is a CFC that returns data in the form of an array.
To display the data as a table requires presentation logic and presentation tools. That responsibility usually falls on the client. The browser is typically the client equipped to render the data in visual form.
You could, for example, get the CFC to return an array in the default JSON format. The client could then use jQuery to convert the JSON array into a table. A quick search on the web produced the following jQuery tools: datatables, jqGrid and jsonTable.

I have results from a query getting passed back as an array
object. Is there an easy to assigned to values of the array to
objects within a form container. Currently, i am doing

I use XML and receive it into an Object - pretty convenient
because you get proper properties rather than just positions.
I'm not sure I exactly understand your example - do you have
'records' as elements in the array, and each 'record' is an object
with named properties? or do you have an array in which each
position relates to a single property.
Assuming the latter, a possible way to do this is to create a
.as class file with all the properties you want in the same order
as you have them in the array. Define a constructor that accepts
your array as input. Then loop through the properties and assign
them from your array:

I haven't tried this, but should work.
If the array is an array of objects, just do this:

Another option is to write some script that follows the
container hierarchy, and for each control in the hierarchy, inspect
the id (or name if you prefer), and check

Import data from excel file

Hello.
Is anybody can help how to import data from excel file to the form created with designer 7.0. Originally there is a script inside the form to populate drop down list and depending from data selected in the ID number drop down list, there will be filled out the description and the prices text fields. But now I have to modify this form with data from excel file, which has more than 30000 lines and put all this data to script is too much.
So, can somebody know how can I after filling the ID number field , populate the description and price text fields with data from excel file corresponding to this ID number ?
This form is used in Adobe reader.
Any comments are welcome.

Upload data from excel with vba by calling a function module

Hello all,
i have a problem with the function module "ALSM_EXCEL_TO_INTERNAL_TABLE". I will call this function module with vba to load data from excel to sap with a Buttonclick. I have copied this function module and set it remotable. But i can´t call it from excel.
Can you give me some tips how can i
upload data from excel with vba by click a button.
The problem seems the function: call method cl_gui_frontend_services=>clipboard_import in the function module, because when i comment this function call the vba-call is true but no results.
How can I call the function module correct with vba?

I am using BIDS Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and running the package to load the data from excel .
My machine has 32 bit excel hence have set property to RUN64BITRUNTIME AS FALSE.
But the error still occurs .
I checked on Google and many have used Delay validation property at Data flow task level to true but even using it at both excel connection manager and DFT level it doesnt work

Problem with uploading data from excel using BDC for tcode f-02

Hi All,
I am uploading data from excel using BDC for tcode f-02. The problem here is, while recording, the values of some fields are recording twice. I dont know why it's happening so. But if I run my abap program, I have to give those fields twice in my excel sheet. Otherwise data does not upload. But it is not the feasible way. We must give those fields once in excel. Please tell me, how I can solve the issue.

in BDC each and every action is recording. If your press enter in same screen that also recorded once aging may be this is your case repeating field values will appear. we can solve the problem for repeat fields like below.
suppose in your excel having repeated field X1 X2 X3 the X2 contains repeated field X3 means delete the X3 field.
Now In your itab having X1 and X2 fields. While in the LOOP the ITAB pass the X2 field to repeated the fields.
LOOP at ITAB to WA.
CLEAR bdcdata_wa.
bdcdata_wa-fnam = 'BDC_CURSOR'.
bdcdata_wa-fval = 'RM08M-EBELN'.
APPEND bdcdata_wa TO bdcdata_tab.
CLEAR bdcdata_wa.
bdcdata_wa-fnam = 'INVFO-BLDAT'.
bdcdata_wa-fval = wa-X2." 1st time pass the X2 fields
APPEND bdcdata_wa TO bdcdata_tab.
CLEAR bdcdata_wa.
bdcdata_wa-fnam = 'INVFO-BLDAT'.

Problem populating html form fields with data from database.

I'm using a straight forward piece of code to populate a form with data from a database, to create and 'edit record' page. The code is as follows;

However, when I view the page, the string shows in the text feild, but seems to be split at the point of the first space. So basically only the first word of the string shows in the text field. If I try to print '$dbnewsletter_title' outside of the table, the string is shown in full as it should be.
Does anyone know what is causing this problem?

Extracting data from Excel To Illustrator javascript or vbscript

Hi all-
I was wondering if there was a way to extract data from Excel to be used in Illustrator. I know there is an option of variables and xml, and I don't want that. I've seen and tried out how to read illustrator and write to excel, and I get that. What I would like to do is pretty much the opposite:
1.Pre-fill in an Excel file(.xls,.csv, doesn't matter) with data such as a filename in column 1 and (Replacement Text) in column 2 and close manually.
2. Run script(VBSCRIPT,Javascript, doesn't matter)
3.For each column in Excel file where cell in first column is not empty, open Illustrator Template with placeholder of "DWG" textframe and replace the frame titled "DWG" with Replacement text from Excel in Column2.
4, Save each to a PDF file and name file with text from Excel Column1(Filename)
In a nutshell, there will be a single illustrator template with a premade textFrame with a name of "DWG". Excel will contain two columns, one for the filename to be named and one for the relative text to replace with the placeholder in AI. I hoped I explained this well enough without causing too much confusion. Thanks in advance.

As text… \n is new line character and \r is return character. I can't remember which excel uses but they both equate to a line/paragraph… I very quickly threw together an example for you…

Importing Data from Excel into Primavera

Hello:
I'm trying to import data from an Excel spreadsheet of a given set of columns (i.e. template) into Primavera. I wish to copy the data from Excel into a new activity at the Activity Level and have set up the template already at the Activity Level.
It is easy to copy and paste data from Primavera into Excel, but it is not straight forward to copy Excel data into Primavera. I believe you have to import the data, but I do not know how to. Is there documentation somewhere that I can access, or is there someone who knows that can help?

You can control the activities that are exported with the user of a filter in the template options.
Go to Modify template options Add a new template or modify the existing
template. The template contains options for exchanging data with
Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet applications. Click Modify to
customize the selected template
Select a Subject Area in the Modify Template dialog box to modify its
options. In the Columns tab, select the fields to export. The available
options are based on the selected subject area.
In the Modify Template dialog box, click the Filter tab to select the
activities you want to export for the selected subject area. If using more
than one filter, choose to show activities that meet all selection criteria in
each filter, or to show activities that must meet only one selection criteria
in each filter. Select the filter(s) to use for the export file. If necessary,
click Modify to edit the selected user-defined filter. The fields available for
filtering are based on the selected subject area.
