Popup blocking exceptions

I must be missing something quite obvious, or it just doesn't exist. Right now, I do not use the block popup windows features because there are a couple of websites that use popups as a part of their functionality. In Firefox, I can block all popups, yet still add exceptions that are allowed, by adding the domain name to the preferences.
Can I do the same thing with Safari?

As hpr3 says, Safari doesn't offer that natively.
You could press cmd-k before visiting the sites in question (cmd-k toggles the popup blocker on/off)

• Use Group Policy to add website to Popup Blocker Exception List

I have downloaded the Firefox.adm Template and have added it to my local security settings for testing. I do not see how to add website(s) to the Popup Blocker Exception List. I have been able to do this for IE and Chrome (using the Chrome Group Policy Template) and need to do the same for Firefox.

hello MorehouseSteve, firefox doesn't support any group policy settings per default - you might have to contact the developers or support resources of the plugin or extension you're using to get further help on this issue...

• Why isn't the popup blocker exception working for sites I have added? It still asks me to "allow" them.

Even though I have added sites to the Exceptions in the Popup Blocker preferences, I constantly have to press the Allow button to actually go to the next window. The sites are staying in the Exceptions list and I can get there, but something clearly isn't working properly.

I have been adding each domain name that pops up that's different from the original website and Firefox is still asking me to "Allow" it. Very frustrating...

• My popup blocker exceptions disappear when I close Firefox.

I just ran into this the other day, but it's become a major issue. The exceptions I enter into the popup blocker don't persist from session to session; as long as at least one instance of Firefox remains open the exception list is there, but after I close Firefox and reopen it I have no exceptions left. I only need a handful of exceptions, but I don't want to have to type them in every time I access those web sites!

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":
*do not clear the Site Preferences
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Clear+Recent+History
Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
If you use cleanup software like CCleaner then check the settings for the Firefox application.

• How do I add a website to the popup blocker exception list using a command prompt?

I have many users with Firefox 2. I need a specific web site to be allowed for popups if their popup blocker is turned on. I need to be able to execute this command in a script which will run from a command prompt when the user logs in.

cor-el,
The link you sent gave me all the details I needed for Firefox 2. The hostperm.1 file is a text file. I was able to use the Copy command in a script to combine hostperm.1 file with a text file containing the website I needed.
Firefox 3 looks like it uses a database for that function, so I think you're right that it's not do-able in that version.
Thanks!

• Popup Blocker Exceptions is not saving the allow websites

Under Tools -> Options -> Content. Check "Block Popup Windows" . Exceptions -> Enter a website to "Allow". The Allow data disappears when Firefox is closed.

Do not use Clear Recent History to clear the "Site Preferences"
Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.

• Popup blocker keeps losing my "exceptions" to websites. every day I have to go back in and enter the exceptions. This has only happened with the last two Firefox versions.

I go to "tools" then popup blocker "exceptions". (I have the block popups checked.) When I enter "www.paypal.com" and add it in, everything is OK for about 12 hours (or less). I will check to see if the exception is still there within 12 hours and there is nothing in my exceptions. I have added as many as three exceptions entered only to have them all disappear within a few hours.
This severely cramps my attempt to print shipping labels on the PayPal website.
I thought this latest version of Firefox cured the issue, but it did not.

Make sure that you do not use Clear Recent History to clear the "Site Preferences"
Clearing "Site Preferences" in "Clear Recent History" will remove exceptions that are stored in content-prefs.sqlite (site specific settings for zoom) and permissions.sqlite (exceptions for images, cookies, pop-ups, software; Tools > Page Info > Permissions) in the Profile Folder.
The password exceptions (Tools > Options > Security: Passwords: Show Passwords) are also removed from signons.sqlite.

• Exceptions in popup blocking not work good

why sub-domains in exceptions in popup blocking not work? if i add a particular subdomain it works, but when i add an star in subdomain to do for all not work:
*.mihanblog.com
*.blogfa.com
//// Please add image upload on post feature to Firefox's support ////
//// Also add a suggestion forum to Firefox's support (like Chrome's forums) ////
Thanks

Do not add a * because Firefox doesn't support wildcard that way.<br />
Just specify the domain to apply the exception to a domains and all sub domains.

• Windows 2008r2 script exceptions to popup blocker

I'm trying to deploy Firefox 25 to about 400 users via Win2008r2 terminal services in and AD environment. I want popup blocker to be enabled but I need a way to auto-populate a list of exceptions for these users automatically when they first logon. Without the ability to 'push' exceptions into configurations, the popup blocker will generate too many support calls for Firefox to be viable.
The preferred option would be GPO (I've tried all the firefoxadm type options but they are all outdated for FF25 and 64bit) but pushing files around with scripts at login would do. I've tried making changes to the popup exclusion list and then checking for changing config files but can't see anything obvious for the stored locations.

The popup whitelist sites seemed to be stored in permissions.sqlite file, which is a SQL Lite DB, that is part of the profile that is created for the user. I am checking to see if there is an easier way for editing this file or a script hat can insert the required settings for the popup blocker in the DB - that way you can execute the script.
To check the key and value, I guess you can copy the permissions.sqlite DB from the profile and view it in a SQLite browser - and after that I would think it will be a SQL insert command into the DB.
I will post whatever I can find to make this easier for you. Request you to kindly provide the solution if you were able to get this working.
Thank you

• How do i add existing web addresses to the popup blocker?

different windows/tabs continually open up on different sites especially those from "http://media.fastclick.net". Although it is in a new tab, it is rather annoying.

https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Pop-up+blocker
The popup blocker should block all popups, exceptions for domains that you want to allow popups for are what you add to the Exceptions window.

• How do I block a popup window that I have allowed to open on Firefox once? I now have the popup blocker set to block all sites, but the popup still opens every time I open Firefox or open (sometimes) a new tab.

How do I block a popup? I allowed this popup to open once. Now I have set the popup blocker to block all sites but this popup still opens every time I open Firefox and sometimes (usually) when I open a new tab.
I Have stopped and restarted Firefox multiple times.
I have rebooted the computer.
I have set the tools/options/content/block pop-up windows/exceptions to block all sites (no exceptions).
I have no other issues with Firefox.
I have Adblock plus (with (1) subscription) installed
I am currently using Firefox version 4.0 on Windows7 Ultimate.

Just to address the last point: check your History menu to see whether you have the Restore Previous Session option and use that if you can. If that is grayed out or doesn't restore everything, check the Recently Closed Windows and Recently Closed Tabs lists for other pages.
The unwanted window may be generated by an add-on. Try disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
* Ctrl+Shift+a
* "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
Any improvement?
Here are some other things to check:
(1) user.js file that changes Firefox startup behavior and overrides your preferences. This article describes how to track that down and delete it if you have one: How to fix preferences that won't save.
(2) Possible hijacked shortcut. Check the "target" of the desktop icon you use to start Firefox to see whether it lists the unwanted page. To do that:
right-click the icon > Properties > Shortcut tab
For 64-bit Windows 7, the Target should be no more and no less than this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
(3) Possible undisclosed bundle items. If you have installed any free software recently, check your Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a program for surprises. If you click the "Installed on" column head to group by date, it is easier to spot bundled junk. Remove everything suspicious or unrecognized.
(4) Supplemental clean up scans. Our support article lists tools other Firefox users have found helpful: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.
Hopefully that cures it.

• Blocking popup windows even when disabling the popup blocker

For quite some time now, Firefox has been blocking essential popup windows on my computer. It's not just those annoying ones, even those when I am trying to write an email and similar things. I have disabled the popup blocker and it does not change anything at all. It does not alert me that it has blocked anything either, it is simply as if I never clicked anything in the first place. I have tried adding exceptions to my popup blocker, and this does not work either. This is really frustrating and is interfering with my daily use of firefox, and forces me to use crappy explorer which does not block things. What can I do?

Hi Sachin
Thank you so much for the reply.
About your request, the codes that I used are:
HTML for the PopUp:
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
function popUp(URL) {
var iMyWidth;
var iMyHeight;
//half the screen width minus half the new window width (plus 5 pixel borders).
iMyWidth = (window.screen.width/2) - (250 + 10);
//half the screen height minus half the new window height (plus title and status bars).
iMyHeight = (window.screen.height/2) - (225 + 50);
//Open the window.
var win2 = window.open("http://xarao.businesscatalyst.com/caipiroska.html","Window2","status=no,height=450,width=500,resizable=yes,left=" + iMyWidth + ",top=" + iMyHeight + ",screenX=" + iMyWidth + ",screenY=" + iMyHeight + ",toolbar=no,menubar=no,scrollbars=no,location=no,directories=no");
win2.focus();
</SCRIPT>
For the Link:
javascript:popUp('http://xarao.businesscatalyst.com/caipiroska.html')
Of course for all the different links in the page I've changed the http of each image in both codes.

Thank you once more.
Best regards,

• HTML Formatted Links in Dynamic TextField Trigger Popup Blocker

I recently updated the flash on my site to load all text

• How to deploy popup blocker allowed sites settings to multiple computers?

We are running on Win 7 Platform with Firefox ESR version 31.4.0. We want to disable popup blocker for certain sites. I tried to use FirefoxADM_0.5.9.4 to apply the settings through group policy but that did not work. When I look at the firefox_login.vbs file, there is a line mentioning registry setting FirefoxPopupsWhitelistKey = WshShell.regread("HKCU\Software\Policies\Firefox\FirefoxPopupWhitelist") but I cannot find that key on the computer.
Does anyone has experience deploying this type of settings? If not, I am also open to hear about disabling completely popup blocker.
if this cannot be done through group policy, please let me know other way that I can do this. I read through the about:config configuration but I did not find any settings to disable the popup.
Thanks for your help.

Firefox stores all exceptions in the permissions.sqlite file, so you would have to use an SQLite Manager extension or program to modify this database.
Disabling the pop-up blocker in Firefox would be easier as that would only require to toggle a pref and that can be done via a mozilla.cfg file.
You can use a mozilla.cfg file in the Firefox program folder to lock prefs or specify new (default) values.
Place a local-settings.js file in the defaults\pref folder where also the channel-prefs.js file is located to specify using mozilla.cfg.
pref("general.config.filename", "mozilla.cfg");
pref("general.config.obscure_value", 0);
These functions can be used in the mozilla.cfg file:
defaultPref(); // set new default value
pref(); // set pref, allow changes in current session
lockPref(); // lock pref, disallow changes

• Problem with IE8 popup blocker and Windowless mode

My team is having popup blocker issue, which is crippling our system where a large range of users are now complaining that their links or buttons will not open in IE7 or IE8 and results in the pop-up blocker message.
Our Flash application's embed code needed wmode set to windowless ('opaque' or 'transparent') since we need to place floating HTML objects over the Flash application. But all links (within static text content) with target set to '_blank' or a custom name and also all navigateToURL() methods with the same target values are now resulting in IE pop-up blocker message once the window mode was changed to 'opaque' (same result also with 'transparent').
We have a AS3 work around for the navigateToURL() method but no solutions for 100s of pages of simple HTML content contributed by users that have links as well as our own Flash static-text content with links.
Here is a simple page created to demonstrate the issue - http://clients.projectmiso.net/photobiz/custom_lightbox/Test_File.html
And the ActionScript 3 code -
var clickFunction = function(){
        var targetURL:URLRequest = new URLRequest("http://www.yahoo.com");
        navigateToURL(targetURL, '_blank');
btn1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, clickFunction);

Hi!
One thing you could try is to use MOUSE_UP instead of CLICK
( tip-source : http://www.actionscript.org/forums/showthread.php3?t=176795 )
This example uses clickTag parameter (through flashvars) instead of a hardcoded URL inside the flashfile though,
but I'm sure you get the point:
clickBtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, function(event: MouseEvent): void {
var sURL: String;
if ((sURL = root.loaderInfo.parameters.clickTag)) {
navigateToURL(new URLRequest(sURL), "_blank");
clickBtn.buttonMode = true;
clickBtn.useHandCursor = true;
Or you might want to have a look at this workaround :
